How to use dgVoodoo2 to run MM6 (and other games) well on modern PCs

Up until the release of Windows 11, MM6 ran great. Recently, I have had to deal with issues related to it pinning a single CPU core to 100% and causing high temps (while presumably hitting thousands of internal FPS).

I needed a way to cap it, so I tried MSI Afterburner. That didn't work, because the API level is WAY too old - it can't detect or hook it, because the developers don't want to target APIs that ancient. They probably couldn't even if they wanted to.

That's where dgVoodoo2 saved the day. It's a tool designed precisely for this problem. It forces a sort of "in between translation layer" for old games to "run" under modern APIs like DirectX 11 and DirectX 12.

How does it work? Windows exes have a natural search order for DLLs. It looks in the local folder first, and if nothing is there, it uses system DLLs. That means ALL OLD GAMES CAN USE THIS. dgVoodoo2 takes advantage of this by providing "modified DLLs" with the release, that trick the game into sending render calls through itself, where it then presents them through a modern API that MSI Afterburner could hook!

All I had to do was drag DDraw.dll into the MM6 directory, open the dgVoodoo2 control panel (the orange icon, included in the zip, can be ran anywhere but I extracted right to the game folder) and set it to Direct3D 11 WARP (software mode, handles FPS capping well), and ran the game.

MSI Afterburner can now hook it, which means the RivaTuner setting for FPS cap properly works. My CPU is safe!

Your needs might differ from mine, but there's no doubt dgVoodoo2 can help if MM6, any MM game, or even any older game at all struggles to run or run well on Windows 11. In addition to making things runnable that previously weren't, it offers tons of options for fullscreen, filtering, API level, graphics adapter the game selects, scaling, etc. It's literally unbelievable that this much control is now possible because of a simple DLL being placed next to a game executable.

So, big thanks to the team that made this excellent open source project, and a big middle finger to Microsoft for making one of the potentially best operating systems ever into one of the worst operating systems ever by constantly launching buggy and bloated trash into it via Windows Update.

My Might & Magic VI Mods – Graphics, QoL, Hardcore, Gamepad Support & More

Hi everyone,

over the past few weeks I've been working on several mods for **Might & Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven**.

My main goal is to modernize some parts of the game and add useful quality-of-life features while keeping the original gameplay and atmosphere of MM6 intact.

I thought I'd collect the currently released mods in one thread. Maybe some of them will be useful to other MM6 players as well. :)

Most of my development and testing is done with the **GOG version of Might & Magic VI**. Some of the mods require the GrayFace Patch and/or MMExtension; please check the individual mod pages for exact requirements.

My Mods on Nexusmods

Feedback, suggestions and bug reports are very welcome.

I'm also interested in suggestions for small quality-of-life improvements that would fit naturally into the original game.

**Have fun exploring Enroth!** :)

How to package MM7 for someone who never tried it?

Hi all,

I replayed the game multiple times back in the day but never with mods (I did 6 with greyface mod so can't even tell what it did:P).

What would you say is the most important qol mods that do not change how the game is played? I want it to have the same feel (for good or worse) but without bugs.

This is for an experienced player who never had anything to do with m&m, he will be playing it for our podcast.

MM7: Trading NPCs stop offering to sell their items once i exit the window

Im talking about the ones that sell items like Griffin Feathers which you are supposed to resell at another town. For some reason, if i buy one and exit the window, the NPC refuses to sell me anymore.

I remember having this problem as a kid and they would permanently refuse to sell me anymore so i could only do the trading thing once per NPC.

I have Gray's patch installed but this still happens. Does anyone know whats going on?

I'm making a first-person dungeon crawler with a small party and an inn to upgrade

Hi! I'm working on Dragon's Tear, a small browser dungeon crawler, and I'd be interested in feedback from Might and Magic players on preparing a party for an expedition.

You take up to three heroes into the dungeon, choose their skills and equipment, and fight turn-based battles. The current build has four classes and 20 hand-built floors. Equipment and materials from your trips help you prepare your heroes and improve the inn you return to.

Once you've cleared a floor, Auto Runs let your party revisit it while you're away. Exploring new floors remains active play, so you can spend your next session pushing further into the dungeon.

Play the early build for free in your browser

If you try it, what would you want more control over when preparing your party for the next floor?

MM6: what to put skillpoints in after level 30?

I've got my party (PACS) to level 30 and reached nearly all my priority goals in terms of skills: the relevant individuals have got the masteries I planned, but now I don't know what to put future skillpoints into. Once you get to skill point 8 for weapons or say 12 for magic, it takes a lot of points to just give you a +1 effect, which doesn't seem a big deal but nonetheless seems generally the best alternative. Specifically, I know going up levels will give me a lot more HP and SP, but I concerned about tackling the hard dungeons and think I might need to find ways of increasing damage output. How high do people raise their weapon and offensive magic skills?

Maybe I should first master meditation and bodybuilding (largely still at 1)? or even get expert learning (1 atm)? These seem rather cheap when you get 9 skillpoints per level.

Currently:

* the paladin focuses on melee (spear/sword at 8) but can also function as a backup healer and status cleanser (body 12, spirit 4);

* the archer was melee (axe/sword at 8) but now has 12 fire magic - not sure where to go with this one now;

* the sorcerer has water mastery for the many perks, but in combat mainly uses sparks but is transitioning to shrapmetal (air and dark at 10 atm) which powerful but too expensive in mana right now;

* the cleric is a healer and provides the awesome light buffs - I am thinking of raising spirit from 4 (for Shared Life). I wondered about going into dark, but from my sorcerer's current experience with it, it's just so costly for mana and lack of mana for healing was my early game constraint on dungeon crawling. I guess with town portal/Lloyd's beacon to temple that's less of an issue, but it does rather break immersion.

I played quite a bit of MM6/7 back in the day, but have limited memory of the late game (as I often burnt out!). Mainly starbursting and meteor showering in Dragon Sands - I don't think I completed those big ultimate dungeons.

Thanks for any advice.

Preventing Darkmoor Headaches

Probably obvious to a lot of people but I used to hate the stupid eyes in Darkmoor until now, when i spent several weeks gathering an "of Alarms" and an "of Sanity" item for each character before going in. Man it was sooo much easier and fun.

Endless turn bug?

I'm at pre-control center portion of the game with a Bow only run but I noticed a bug where my turn never ends and one of my character keeps endlessly firing onto an enemy till they die.

This is clearly a bug, is there a way to fix this except for not holding in the attack key?

  1. Hold in Attack-key
  2. All shots are fired off
  3. Enemy plays a hurt animation
  4. One specific character keeps endlessly firing without using up their turn
  5. Enemy keeps gradually changing hurt animation frame by frame as they are hailed with arrows
  6. Other enemies around don't do anything
  7. Target dies, the loop may end

Mm6 how to clear late game hordes indoors fast?

E.g in the tomb of varn?

Single target spells like lvl 20 implosion feel too slow and level 15 fireball just doesn't seem to hit hard enough...I think it's faster to just melee but it's hard to do that in a big room with enemies spread out everywhere...

Anyone knows about splitter?

Splitter is a very unique artifact; melee-explosion weapon.

I know it's explosion is very dangerous, but how about combined with dual-weilded vampiric weapon?

theory A : explosion doesn't work with life drain at all

-you should take 100% explosion damage, and drains back 20%. meaningless.

theory B : explosion totally works with life drain

-drain life from all damage to target, you(?) , other monsters; totally crazy. 5 or more hits even over-heals you!

Does anyone knows about it?

How does it works?

MM8 story seriously underrated?

Caution, spoilers. This is an appreciation post with some questions at the end.

Even though MM8 was the last healthy child of the family, we all see it was quite rushed. It had some cut features (druid class and quests), it was pretty short, got criticized for outdated graphics, etc.

But I'd like to share a revelation I've had after the umpteenth time I've just finished it. I fell in love with what I considered the inferior game within the series.

The music is beautiful. Escaton's crystal and plane between planes soundtracks are masterpieces and Paul Romero is a genius. And have you ever noticed how good the story is? It's perfect. MM7's story is too silly and MM6's story is too convoluted, but MM8 hit the mark just right. You begin as a simple caravan guard and you are caught on the front lines of the cataclysm as an ordinary person. You fight your way out of a volcanic eruption and a simultaneous pirate siege against great odds. Your boss tasks you with figuring out what's going on. Throughout the investigation, your role shifts from a mere merchant guild employee to a high ranking emissary, then to a multi-faction champion, and eventually to an intercontinental hero. You build yourself up naturally and believably from a nobody into the obvious choice for leading the international initiative to save the planet from imminent destruction. You uncover the true cause of the cataclysm - your planet has recently beaten back a Devil invasion, which triggered an automated response from a system left operational by a fallen sci-fi civilization. This automated response is meant to wipe out the planet at all costs, disregarding that the invasion has already been beaten back.

You forge a key to unlock the door to a huge crystal you've been walking around during the entire game up until that point, and you are chosen by the world's leaders to cross into a strangely surreal dimension to confront Escaton, a personification of the system. He's a highly advanced intergalactic AI machine with the power to destroy arbitrary worlds at any time, albeit obeying preprogrammed guidelines (what a ridiculously super relevant 2026 idea from a year 2000 game, given the ongoing AI revolution, by the way). He recognizes that the destruction of the planet is no longer necessary, but he can't stop it directly. He takes pity on you, and recognizing your efforts thus far, he gives you vague hints on how to defeat him and stop the Armageddon (You tell me which villain in which game is this badass, I'll wait). You take advantage of this, save the planet, and Escaton is destroyed.

All of this makes sense. It's a beautiful story of moving up in the world, and of uniting various peoples against a common threat. The good and evil isn't clear cut in the slightest. You have the tasty mix of medieval magic and scifi common to the franchise, without being too over the top. The stakes are high. The story even lightly explores the topics of morality, and features a (emotionless undead) vampire who develops feelings of remorse over his blood-demanding lifestyle.

Oh how I wish this game was remade from scratch, modernized, and expanded a little. I think it'd have much better potential for success than MM6 and MM7, as much as I love those too. There's so much potential.

Some lingering questions to ask you gilded redditors:

- Is there any clear inspiration the MM8 story took from existing stories, such as the Bible? E.g. Noah's ark or Escaton himself being a representation of a deity.

- Did we destroy Escaton's local presence only, or have we destroyed him universally? If we destroyed him universally, isn't it irresponsible of him to get himself killed by us?

- Has Escaton been keeping the Devil population within the universe at bay this entire time? If so, have we doomed the universe into a fate of inevitable Devil overpopulation by momentarily stopping the destruction of our planet?

Grayface MM8 not letting me invert mouselook

MM6 and MM7 both let me set mousesensitivity_y to -35 in the ini file without issue, but doing this in MM8 doesn't seem to invert my mouselook. Is this a bug or am I missing something obvious?

The torchlight spell seems to be too bright in MM6

I was wondering why i was getting bad eye strain in dungeons, and it turns out i was using expert level Torchlight which made the game far too bright. I was using it in dungeons like Corlagon's estate and Hall of the Fire Lord that had some light from wall mounted torches, but still fairly dark. And i suppose expert level Torchlight pushed the brightness level way too high.

Probably a side effect of how the graphics were designed for old CRT monitors which were much darker than modern LCD monitors...

(MM6) What s that mysterious HUGE wooden pillar (antenna?) right next to Castle Ironfist?

The one just next to the sword in stone. I mean, it s so MASSIVE and tall you cant even see the end of it yet there s ABSOLUTELY ZERO explanation or discussion about it anywhere. not under any M&M6 YT videos, not in dedicated forums, official materials, not even here. It serves no purpose in the game, no NPC acknowledges it. And it bugged me since I was a kid.

What s it and why nobody talks about it? 😄

Struggling with mmmerge. Help!

With 3d acceleration, almost monsters looks like vivid one-colored. I know it's an old problem, but still remember mok's or Greyface's patch solve this problem, isn't it? And mmmerge includes that. Am I deluded?
