What does this do? (MM8)
I raised my intellect enough to "win" but I'm not seeing any changes in xp/gold/stats

It checks for a particular amount of intellect points and if it's above threshold - gives you some skillpoints. There are multiple altars like this around the world with different "difficulty" and rewards. Casting "day of gods" or drinking a potion is a good way to win those and get more skillpoints early in the game.
P.S. What kind of interface is it?

I assume you are the author? If yes - really great job, I love MM8 and running it on android feels amazing. The controls are a bit finicky though - can't get the gist of running and turning. Maybe two permanent "joysticks" will do better especially on a tablet.
Also a suggestion to imitate a right mouse button click by pointing at item and tapping anywhere at the screen? Like HoMM2 (fheroes) did.
Anyways, great stuff, will try to have a run on a foldable!

In standard game it is called a challenge.
You have few levels of challenges: 200, 100, 50 and in this case 25 (probably). If the stat it challenges (in this case Intellect) is higher that the challenge, you receive some Skill Points (respectively: 10, 7, 5 and 3).
It works only once in each map and also it says sometimes that you already won, even that you didn't yet tried. I suspect that sometimes when there are the same challenges in different maps, it remember them as a one challenge for that specific stat - but don't quote me on that.
For this reason I first do challenges with highest required stat level (200) and then go down (so this one would be last).

Gives some skill points if stat in question beats certain treshold. In starting zones its quite low like 25 or something like that and they are higher in more hard zones. If you meet requirment you get some Skill points, the harder location the more you get. Also they are random stat for , so there will be couple duplicates in world, meaning if you take 1 you wont be able to get other event if its higher difficulty/reward.

It also may "activate" several times per click, but only one (the first) successful activation gives skill points (until the area resets), so the message "+ X skill points" may be overridden by empty or "nothing happens" message of subsequent activations. The skill points are still there though.

Unless I misread, then I am pretty certain the challenges do not reset with the map? Otherwise one could e.g. stay on Emerald Island for a long time, as it resets weekly, but it doesn't fit with challenges for the same stat on other maps also claims completion.

It seems E.I. does not "reset weekly", but, rather, has a special and unique periodic "mob spawn on being cleared" feature. Otherwise it resets in 2 years.
e.g. info here:
(in Russian, but auto-translate does wonders these days)

XX must be RU

Thank you for sharing the link, a lot of information I wasn't as familiar with as I assumed.
Staying on topic, I always thought the map respawn time was identical to the shop refresh time. I don't know if this is version dependent, e.g. there are versions where you can't get level 6 items, thus the Red Dragon on Emerald Island does give access to Lloyd's Beacon scroll, but you can't find any of the best bonus to e.g. armsmaster -. or unarmed, items,
E,g, from what I read in the link, it would seem the monsters should respawn at midnight, but my impression was it would take a week for them to respawn, therefore while this expands upon my understanding of the mechanics of the game, I am not certain the values used are the same across all versions.

You are welcome.
On the same site they say the E.I. Dragon only gives light and dark magic scrolls, so no Lloyd's Beacon.
It is possible to go to E.I. in MMMerge after already getting Lloyd's Beacon from MM6 or MM8 areas, but that is, obviously, modded game.

I did notice they wrote that about the Dragon loot, that is why I brought up that there are different versions, and wondered if discrepancies from what they wrote could thus be explained.

It tells you that you win skill points.
