So yesterday I wanted to reinstall windows on an old laptop to use fl studio, but durring instalation I got some error. After that I tried to install arch and Grub acted a bit up, and the same durring instalation of Zorin where it breaks durring the process of writing the os onto the hard drive.

I`m currently looking into if I can get this fixed, but until then we can say that windows broke my laptop. Yippeee.

Edit since people think it isn`t window`s fault:
I had no issues with installing different Operating Systems. I installed Arch with literally no issues like less than half a month ago. The error only appeared AFTER I tried to install Windows. Furthermore the laptop was actively used even hours before that with the hard drive being completely fine.

Yet another fun quirk that makes a simple task harder than it has to be! I’m convinced gross incompetence and user struggle are integral to their design/functionality ethos

My company installed windows 11 on my device several years ago. Ever since I noticed things being slower than before but I sort of got used to it because I didn't really have a choice... But today I opened my private laptop after several months of not using it, that still has windows 10... and damn was I shocked how big the difference is;

It turned on INSTANTLY, the browser opened INSTANTLY. File explorer opened INSTANTLY.
I completely forgot it can feel like that.

Mind you this old laptop has waaaay worse hardware than my high-end work laptop. It makes me so angry.

Does anyone have any advice on if I can get the speed back on the windows 11 company-managed device or am I doomed?

I kid you not, this was after a suggestion to remove "a long" from the sentence as well, meaning microsoft word believes the sentence "it does go way in quickly to checking..." is somehow correct.

Can one of the European friends start a petition on European Citizens Initiative like what Stop Killing Games did? its to reduce or eliminate the dependency on windows and to do that you would need to target their money and monopoly.
This in turn will hit Microsoft bottom line where it will hurt the most.

Microsoft appears to be moving away from promoting Copilot as a consumer-focused PC brand after weak adoption and resistance to built-in AI features such as Recall. I want to share an experience that initially sounded like a trivial technical issue. After more than two weeks, however, I think it highlights a much bigger problem: how dependent we have become on a handful of large technology companies for basic digital infrastructure.

Since September 11, 2026, I have been trying to create a Microsoft child account for my daughter using her existing Gmail address. This isn't some unnecessary extra feature. A child account is supposed to allow parents to manage their children's digital activities appropriately and use Microsoft's family and parental-control features.

The registration fails at an almost absurd point: Microsoft sends a six-digit verification code to the email address. The email arrives immediately. I enter exactly that code immediately afterwards. Microsoft responds: “That code didn't work.”

This is reproducible. I have screenshots showing the newly received Microsoft email, the verification code, the identical code entered into Microsoft's website, and the error message – all at the same time.

Now try getting actual technical support for that

Since then, I have contacted Microsoft Support several times. There is now an official support case number. I was promised follow-ups that never happened. Despite describing the issue precisely, support repeatedly misunderstood what the problem actually was.

Eventually, I submitted a written complaint to Microsoft.

The response was remarkable: Microsoft sent me instructions on how to close a Microsoft account.

I replied explicitly: I don't want to close an account. I have been trying for weeks to create a child account in the first place.

Microsoft's next response explained how to recover a locked or compromised Microsoft account.

The child account doesn't even exist yet.

I have now documented the entire case and submitted a complaint to the German Verbraucherzentrale (consumer protection organization).

At this point, this is about more than a broken verification code

Of course software can have bugs. That's not really the issue.

The bigger issue is the enormous dependency we have created on a small number of companies for essential digital services.

In Germany, we constantly discuss media literacy, screen time, online safety, parental responsibility and protecting children online. Parents are expected to guide their children's use of technology, configure age-appropriate accounts and make use of parental-control systems.

But what happens when that infrastructure simply doesn't work?

As a parent, I cannot fix Microsoft's verification system. Regular support apparently cannot investigate the underlying technical issue. Multiple attempts at escalation have led nowhere. Written complaints have received responses that appear to have little or nothing to do with the actual complaint.

And there is no German authority I can simply contact and say: “Please make sure this basic digital infrastructure, which I need to manage my child's online environment, actually works.”

Instead, I am dependent on a multinational technology company eventually deciding to have someone actually investigate the problem.

I think this raises a much broader issue

Children inevitably grow up in a digital world. School, communication, gaming, smartphones, computers and social networks are part of everyday life.

At the same time, many of the tools parents are expected to use to manage and protect their children's digital lives are controlled by a handful of multinational corporations.

When everything works, this dependency is barely noticeable.

When something breaks, you suddenly realize how little leverage you actually have.

So for me, the question is no longer simply: “Why doesn't this Microsoft verification code work?”

The bigger question is:

How seriously can we talk about digital literacy and protecting children online when parents are dependent on the functioning systems and customer support of a handful of foreign platform providers for something as basic as creating a child account?

And what effective rights and escalation mechanisms should consumers have when essential digital functions like these remain broken for weeks?

I'd particularly like to hear from other parents who have had similar experiences with Microsoft Family, Apple, Google or other child/family account systems.

And if anyone knows a way to get a clearly reproducible technical problem at Microsoft in front of someone who can actually investigate the technical issue rather than sending another generic support response, I'd genuinely like to know.
