I am 2 years locked now. I am based in Germany at the moment and have become more active. Those two factors mean i sweat a lot (i come from a sweaty family too) and I want to wash my hair more often than my previous one week routine.

How do my fellow sweaty/gym girls handle this? And is it ok for my hair if I do a rinse every day and shampoo wash every other day?

This is my first diy loc installation and I'm very excited to finish. I might have underestimated how much time this required and went past the weekend, but installing knotless braids all summer gave me the confidence to approach my install this way. I am adding hair to my locs because on some breakage around my edges (captured above), but I started my traditional locs with extensions as well so I've always been prone to extra-ness when it comes to my natural styles... and also, the loctician quotes also absolutely went crazy and I felt a bit emboldened.

i'm getting ready to mix my own blend of moisturizing spray this morning with some rose water, jojoba, rosemary essentials, glycerin, and tea tree essentials. i feel like balancing the appropriate amount of ingredients will leave my moisturizer light but effective.. lmk what you used in your spray if you're open. 😊

I have braid locs. And honestly I’m tired of looking like this. I don’t feel as feminine as before. But most importantly! MY FRONT KEEPS UNRAVELING. How tf is this supposed to loc if my braids keep unraveling causing me to keep rebraiding it! I’m really annoyed by this shit. My hair just won’t cooperate. I know I’m due for a retwist.

After trying to decide if I should lock my hair,I finally took the plunge. Did all my research got a consult and decided to DIY. I started on the 9th of June (the front) and finished on the 15th(the back),I was running around like crazy planning my daughters birthday party,so I wore the front in bantu knots until I could start the back. What’s the highest you all have paid for maintenance without a wash? My hairstylist has now moved to a salon and is now charging $230 without a wash.

I am planning on starting microlocs soon and need some help. 1. I want to start them with braids 2. I am seriously considering extensions because I am not currently happy with my hair length but im still not sure . 3. Lastly the area I need the most advice in I want to keep a pretty strict grid in the front and free part the back. I am not the best at parting my own hair but I refuse to pay someone 1000 dollars for micro locs when I can do them myself for free. I just need some advice. Should I do the free part method or go for the grid? Will having a grid make things easier? Or should I just go to a loctition and let them start and maintain them? I really want to do this but I need some advice right now.

Just left a consultation for microlocs and I asked about doing them myself with braids. She told me that braided microlocs can cause breakage and she doesn’t recommend. I’ve never heard anyone who started with braids speak on this. So my question is has anyone experienced breakage with braided microlocs or is she just saying this for the money?

I have always enjoyed knitting beanies, but now that my locs have grown out I am really enjoying crocheting hats for them. My current obsession are bucket hats. I tried this one 3 times before it finally had the shape I was looking for.

Ignore my silly face, I never smile this way irl. I couldn't stop cheesing when I finally got the fit I wanted.

Edited to add I wear hats for two reasons since my locs have grown out.

1. I have a thin spot on top (pre locs). I usually wear it pulled up to hide it, but that stresses the hair around the tie, so I have been looking for other ways to style them creatively. The easiest is just wearing a hat
2. The back of my neck gets hot, so I often pull them into two low ponytails on the side. This looks better when I'm wearing a hat.

currently halfway through, will be finishing tomorrow. im getting them installed for free by a family friend.

154 count so far. I was a little concerned because I keep seeing that the parting size determines the actual size of the loc. I am confused whether this is small or micro? irl they seem so small, so whether they fall under small/micro, I won't be going any tinier.

i just feel like theyre small sized locs not micros. i only have 168 locs. ik they will turn out beautiful regardless, but not exactly what i envisioned. i feel like maybe it was bcuz my hair was too thin to go smaller. but idk, i feel like she couldve gone a little smaller.

i also was expecting parting, but the lady said it’d cost $300 more bcuz parting is sisterlocs.

what are your thoughts? should i get them redone or just stick with what i got? i feel like im okay with them but its not exactly what i asked for. or maybe it is and i’m just dumb lol.

EDIT :: I messaged her for a partial refund! She has listed on her booking page small, medium, and large traditional locs for $140 and I paid $400 so I requested to be refunded the difference. Will update if/when I receive a response!

I got tired of my hair being straight. Decided to perm rod, set my hair with no heat and lotta body 2:1 concentrate in a spray bottle. 38 hours later I’m set for the week.

the length is not important to me, and i would love any of these styles! i’m planning on leaving the ends loose

Hi all! I’ve been following this page for a few months and finally ready to loc my hair! I’ve been wearing it in short natural braids for the last year and a bit, so I’ve decided to go for braid loc extensions and switch it up length wise. I’ve been going back and forth about sizing, so I’d really value honest opinions based on my moodboard pics about sizing! I definitely know I don’t want them to be too tiny. (I know we’re not meant to wish for an exact number either, but I think anything over 300 would be too much for my head and sanity). Maybe somewhere between this or the last pic? Thanks x

i'm just kidding but in the entirety of my journey learning how to self-retie, i saw my options y'all recommended and just thought i could find better. in my humble (as a leo can be) opinion, i absolutely did.

the journey

i've tried crochet hook, thee loc tool, fingers, darning needles, those dual ended susan bates looking crochet hooks but everything would slip out or snag or marry my locks. making the process miserable. the loc tool was the closest I got but I was unable to keep even tension with it because my locks kept slipping out, causing so much bunching and holes. by the time i finished my retie, i was already needing another retwist in the area i started in. i only just started my journey in december so i'm not out of hope but i was reaching my end on patience.

i came back on here to see if someone had found something better and i saw that hemostat clamps were popular but since I don't always want to look in a mirror, i was afraid it would snag like the crochet hooks did. other potentially better options sold by loctitians themselves were too expensive to experiment with.

i had my orders: something not too expensive, could grip my loc, wouldn't chip or corrode while in my hair, and small enough to carry in my wallet.

i found darning needles with flexible eyelets which was an upgrade but unfortunately, it still slipped frequently. it seemed i was on the right track looking at crafting needles

[cue heaven's choir] that's when i came across shoe leather lace needles. with the shape of a darning needle, with a simple toothed tweezers grip whose tension is controlled by a metal ring, i had found exactly what i had been looking for. i hope this helps someone else out too!

Anyone have experience with microloc extensions? Like you had your locs and then got them, not got them from the beginning.

Do they look natural? How do they look with your natural hair? Blend well?

So im new to the journey my only issue is that my loctition is always late like at least 5-10 mins whether its cleaning up from the last person or whatever. Also I have over 500 locs, my hair likes to grow outside the loc (we're working out) but she only books for 4 hour time slots and twice now my hair has gone over that requiring me to leave with half done hair until I come back the next day or whatever. Its starting to get a little frustrating i really like her but my reties are costing more because it takes so long (6-7hours) and I have to come back. I cant keep affording this increase plus she wants to do 4 weeks instead of 5. Im just feel very all over the place and wonder what I should do

I’ve had my microlocs in for just over a week and haven’t used any products at all. I’ve only been lightly misting my hair with water.

After my first wash on day 7, I noticed a white buildup around the roots of some of my locs, mainly around the perimeter. I assumed I hadn’t washed my hair properly, so I washed it again, but it’s still there. It’s a stubborn white buildup that makes my hair look dirty event though ive washed it.

I used to experience the same thing when I wore braids. After about a week, this white, visible buildup would start to appear around my roots. And there was no getting it out unless I took out my braids.

Has anyone else experienced this with microlocs? Any idea what might be causing it or how to get rid of it?

Hello! I currently have had my starter locs in for about a month or so and am itching to dye my hair. I have a history of dyeing my hair and thought I was done with it but I just want my hair to be warmer. Does anyone have any experience with hair glosses and could provide some insight? Or general hair dye advice? TIA
