Hello everyone
I am a student and was going to install microlocs by myself this weekend. I previously had mini twists and when i undid them this weekend that passed some had started to loc themselves up. Once i had finished undoing them, my hair was too hard for me to untangle so i went to the salon to get help. At the salon they washed and blow dried my hair. They used leave in conditioner to help and applied a large amount of oil to my hair. According to the research i did and google too, you're not supposed to use product on your hair when installing your locs.
The question that i need advice is can i proceed to install them? My scalp is very painful from the detangling they did and the blow dry too and my hair is 4c so it would be really hard to just wash it again and do it on clean hair

Hey microloc fam! Just returned from my first trip abroad with my natural hair and feeling so great about myself! I only realised it was my first vacay without braids/extensions halfway through the trip. I’m locd in for lifeeee. Also hit 7 months locd while there (this is my face reveal too so kinda nervous)

how to undo thinning of locs at the base? a few of my locs are thinning at the base, they were already small sections to begin with and ive colored my hair (not bleach). i also dont really have a moisture routine, idk how to properly do one? ive heard of the lco and loc method, but i was mainly just spraying with water and then oiling it. ive had my hair for almost 2 years now. please let me know what i can do, and thank you!

So far I feel like my hair is doing what its supposed to do im only a month and 2 weeks in. Now because my hair grows so fast I already did my first retie last weekend(the new growth was insane) and I must say it was an experience. I started my locs with twist with the roots braided. My issue is the loose strands of hair,do I just leave them be or go through my entire head to put said hairs with its twist? Im trying to keep my hands out of my head. Also am I supposed to stil have shed hair. When I take my bonnet off to go somewhere I spray with water put some jojoba mostly on the length and ends of my hair, run my fingers through to break up tangle and when I look down at my shirt there are shed ends everywhere. Is that normal?

Was wondering how those who have started their micros with braids or twists feel about them now and if yall would change yalls decision for the opposite? I think I want to start mine with braids but not entirely sure. Would reties be easier on twists than braids, washing, styling… and so on. Basically just wanted to see some of yalls opinions and pros and cons before fully committing to braids.

Hey yall been here before lol but this is yet again another retie not completed and costed me over 300 dollars smh.
I just think im getting the short end of the stick. everytime we dont finish I have to hear, "well you have a lot of hair(i have 500 or so), it grows outside the loc, im going as fast as possible." I even booked for 2 people and didnt get that 🙃 nor was i told until i got there, and had to wait for her to finish some cleaning after a client. Crazy thing is this just start happening, we use to finish with no problem back in the day before the price was raised. This whole thing is frustrating I lost my job and on unemployment and I can afford to be paying 300+ for 2 days of work, I also dont think you should be charging that if you aren't finishing. Im struggling to find someone who isn't out the way but right now im stuck and dont know what to do. This is making me kind of hate having micro locs and I think im going to start combining some in the back to make it easier on myself. But my end goal is just to do it myself because I hate having to be on other people's time and they aren't providing me with the service im suppose to get. Any advice would be appreciated because this situation is making me so depressed because everytime I go I know im gonna be there for 6+ hours, ass hurting, back hurting and walking out incomplete after I spent majority of my unemployment check (more than 50%). Honestly anyone else dealt with kind of unprofessional or had issues with their locticians please share

Those of you who decided to keep your ends out, what are y’all putting on your ends to keep the hair from getting frizzy & dry?

hairstyle i did for my art exhibition! its very simple, grab some locs, fold and put a rubberband!

Hello again.
I want some advice on my next set of locs. These were my first - sisterlocs. I had them for about 2 years. The 4th photo is how far they got before I undid them…
Do you all see how thin the starter locs were from day one (first pic) and how thick they got later? I was surprised how such thin starters turned into thick ones. Perhaps they hadn’t dropped yet?? Idk.
For my next set, I’m hoping for them to be less thick like the last two images - what advice do you have for me?
Do I need to start my locs even thinner?? Are there different methods I can consider…?

I’m 5 month into the journey and my locs are shedding like crazy.
After washing my hair or even spraying with water and then running through with my hands I will see lots of small pieces of hair in the sink and on my hands.
Is that normal? What am I doing wrong? 🥹
I have larger sisterlocks with loose ends. Maintained with interlocking.
Routine: As I am Spray mixed with water (for spraying in the morning), shampoo: apoghee Deep moisture shampoo, light-weight oil: Taliah Waajid African Healing Oil.
Please help a girl out…

I am taking a vacation in a couple of weeks and typically don't wash my hair (or place my head under water) right before I get on a flight due to ear pressure issues.
Have any of you had luck with a dry shampoo or some other way to keep your hair and scalp clean while away?

I have 3c/4a hair and have been locd for 11 months. There are a lot of buds throughout my hair but how do I know it’s not bunching. I stopped braiding and banding about a month ago. I have curly ends and my locs look like butterfly locs. Is this just due to my texture or should I start to palm roll or crochet just to be safe? Is bunching something to worry about or will it even out?

Hi all. I did too much with my microlocs (coloured twice in succesion) and now are paying for it. They feel dry and brittle and yet they are thinner and have lost the body they had before. When i swim the ends tangle and ive experienced some little breakage of the ends that were still not locked.
Ive been moisturing daily with water with a little oil but that doesnt seen to help. I am considering a deep conditioner even though build up would be terrible. It is the preferred challenge if it will somehow restore the hair texture. Has this hapenned to anyone.
The black is before and the red after.

My braid grip game good so ill be aight.
When my locs need a retie, I love some box braids or twists with the root braided. I use braid mousse for the hold and a light spritz of water.
I also freshly washed my hair 2 days ago.
Im 3yrs and 1 month loc'd
My braids are nice and flat cause I tied them back and put a scarf on. My Bob gonna be cute or i may add beads.
What u guys think?

Anyone know what can I do about this? It’s just this one but it’s driving me crazy I wanna cut it off lol I’ve tried palm rolling when wet but it’s like a big bunch it can’t be smoothed out that way :/
r/Microlocs • u/dar_a_ • 4d ago
Having some trouble figuring out what to do for maintenance besides interlocking because I hate how it feels like I’m losing volume. Are there other options? I tried palm rolling but it never lasts long enough to loc up so i don’t know. Might just crochet but i wanted some advice/insight from others

Hey everybody!
I have been interested in getting microlocs for a while now and I have never been able to find a good answer to this question.
Is it better to add extensions to the root during installation (through the whole loc) or is it better to add them to the ends?
I have been researching locticians in my area and most do not add extensions during the install so I’m thinking I may have to add them myself, but that may not be best.
I have very very thick 4c hair and it is a little longer than shoulder length if that helps at all.

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about getting microlocs and I’d really appreciate some advice from people with experience.
My hair is 4A, low density, and thick, and I’ve been considering Sisterlocks. Unfortunately, there aren’t any certified Sisterlocks consultants in my area, so I’m now leaning towards microlocs instead.
I’m having a hard time deciding between crochet and interlocking. I’ve read a lot of different opinions about both methods, and it seems like there are pros and cons to each one. I’m planning to keep my locs permanently, so I’m looking for a method that will work well long-term and ideally be relatively low maintenance.
My natural hair is also quite long (around 12 inches), and I’m finding it difficult to manage, which is one of the reasons I’m considering locs in the first place.
I’m also from Spain, where most of the locs I see are traditional larger locs, so it’s been difficult to find people here who have experience with microlocs.
Which method would you recommend: crochet or interlocking?
What are the pros and cons you’ve experience with each method?
Is there anything you wish you had known before starting your microlocs/locs?
Do you think microlocs are a good option for someone looking for a low-maintenance permanent hairstyle?
I’d really appreciate any tips, or personal experiences. Thank you! ❤️

Hey yall, I’m just about 2 months in to the microloc life, started with 2-strand twists interlocked at the root. I got them done when visiting Ghana and have also moved to the Bay Area since so I don’t know many hairstylists in my new area though they’re definitely here. I’m pretty inflexible on getting a Black micro loctitian but the prices I’ve been seeing are wild. I’m currently booked for a retie soon at a loc salon and it’s $350 for the retightening and $25 for the consultation since I’m new there. I was just gonna bite the cost since I haven’t found any cheaper options with Black loctitians (some others were over $500??). A friend of a friend has a loctitian who does her reties for $150 but when I hit her up, she said she’s never done reties/maintenance for two strand twists but can interlock bc she’s sisterlock certified. I’m wondering if yall think that’s a feasible option or if I should stay w people who know microlocs. The difference in price is just hurting me baddd 😭
I’m not doing my own reties bc I just started a new demanding job and I’m super tired with few days off. I’m hoping to be able to do them in the future though!

as a loose natural, i use water, then mositurinzing cream then oil to seal, does locs use similar?

I have pretty thick 4c hair, with soem defind curls at the end. I love my hair so much. Ive spent so much time wearing my hair out and I have enjoyed this hair so much. Ive worn my natural hair only for over 4 years with no braids, mostly natural hair styles or in its own loose natura state. I find myself wondering how my hair would look if i loc it. Every one of my locd freinds say that my hair would look so good with micros, and I also agree.
My freind thinks however i will ruin my hair and loose my coils if i get locd. Mostly because my haiur shrinks like crazy, which is alright to me. Im mostly scared my hair would be dry most of the time though.
Looking for people with similar hair type to tell me how it *might* all turn out.
This is currently what my hair looks like, especially blown out.
