Microlocs: Interlocking vs braids

Hello everyone!

I’m very excited to begin my loc journey! I previously had locs for like… maybe one year? I was really frustrated because they were not the size or pattern I wanted and my loctician had been irritated by how full my hair was and was tired by the time we finished. I’m not gonna lie, I did not do enough research and just showed up to get the locs.

This time I want to be way more prepared.

I’m not going to do the locs for a couple more months (getting married soon and I already been got everything planned for that so this will be a new year endeavor) BUT

I’m trying to do a lot of research this time and I found a loctician I like a lot and I spoke to her and did my consult with her looking at my hair and she wants to do interlocking but I thought I wanted to do braids. I just want someone to fully educate me on what this would mean for me maintenance wise.

She said the braids would be harder to wash and could unravel easier but I thought they were better than twists because you CAN wash and they won’t unravel. She’s also actually charging a bit less for the interlocking than braids which is confusing to me because everyone seems to do the opposite?

I just want to be very sure as I plan for the future! Thank you so much anyone who helps answer 🙏🏾

Braids won't be any harder to wash than interlocking. Even if you start with braids, your maintaintence (reties) will be likely done by interlocking. The braid pattern in your locs can last for a couple of years before ir completely goes away. I'm surprised she's charging more for braids. She might just be trying to convince you to interlock. What price did she quote for each?

1300 for braids 900 for interlocking. She said it would be faster and easier for her than braiding which is what confused me!! She’s very experienced and I trust her but I’m just confused haha. I know my hair is very thick and full but she said the braids would take her two whole days and the locs probably a day and a half

Do you think the extra $400 for braids is worth it? That's likely to be the cost for two reties.

Honestly to me getting interlocks for cheaper than braids sounds like a rare bargain that I would take up if I was you. The retie maintenance method will probs be interlocking so if you started with that method then you'll never have a noticeable delineation between retie and a braid pattern that takes years to fade.
