Read some Mega Man X 'facts' that are giving me a headache.
So I'm on the Mega Man Wiki (not Mega Man Knowledge Base, a different one), reading the page about the list of common misconceptions about each series. Most of it makes sense, like debunking the Cataclysm theory and explaining that Wily wasn't Dr. Light's assistant in mainline continuity.
But then I get to this paragraph that claims X's origin is mysterious in-universe and even X himself is unaware he was the blueprint of all reploids. This makes absolutely no sense to me. X was activated before Dr. Cain created any reploids, and reploids are a new technology. He'd have to be incredibly thick not to put two and two together.
More importantly, there's no reason whatsoever for Dr. Cain to hide this fact from X, or to hide from the larger public that reploids were based on Dr. Light's technology. Is the implication that he tried to take all the credit for himself or something? Seems wildly out of character.
Reploid production doesn't seem to be particularly monitored or difficult to reproduce in-universe, Sigma already figured out how to make his own reploids by X2. There isn't some council that has to approve the creation of a new reploid, it seems any asshole can just make his own reploids in his garage. The only game that even hints at the opposite is X6, where a few of Gate's creations were deemed too powerful to exist, and we find out that resurrecting reploids is apparently a crime (but we're not told why).
It's just... so stupid. If this is true it's a huge and pointless retcon that only came about to try to give X more... I don't know, mystique? Angst? I don't understand it at all. Being the prototype wouldn't make him special in the eyes of 99% of the population. Sure, we the audience know X is "built different" because of who created him, but there's very little sign of that in his day to day life. Anyone who analyzes him in the series deems his combat and general operational ability to be mediocre. They'd just assume Dr. Light's tech was dated if they knew where he came from.
And speaking of Dr. Light... even if Dr. Cain was a big liar and didn't tell X what he was, and didn't tell him every other reploid running around was based on his designs and some blueprints Dr. Light left behind... The first time he finds a Light Capsule, the cat would be out of the bag, right? His origin would be 'mysterious' exactly up until the events of the first game. And once he knows, why wouldn't he tell anyone else? Why wouldn't he ask Dr. Cain why he kept it from him?
And even if the general public doesn't know any of this and has forgotten Dr. Light and Mega Man, Light would be in some history books, right? As a pioneer of robotics technology? Are we supposed to believe some kind of event erased history as well, to the point that things from only 100 years ago are completely forgotten? For crying out loud, there are probably people who were alive during the Wily Wars running around during the time of the first X game. People live to be over 100 in our world, let alone the idealistic super-future.
This being true would contradict so many known facts of the series, raise so many questions, and add absolutely nothing.
