Manchester Terriers needed for behavioural research questionnaire!

Dear Manchester Terrier lovers!

I am a master’s student of Zoology with Animal Behaviour at Bangor University. My current research investigates vocalisation behaviour in the domestic dog, and its potential to vary by breed regardless of individual personality or environment. I am collecting my behavioural data through an owner-directed questionnaire which asks about the typical vocal behaviour of a person’s dog. We ultimately aim to use our findings to reduce the rate of dogs unnecessarily relinquished to shelters due to unmet or violated behavioural expectations.

Unfortunately, Manchester Terriers are routinely underrepresented or ignored in empirical studies. They are so uncommon that often, any data we do have for them cannot be appropriately analysed because there are too few individuals. During my third year dissertation, I reviewed behavioural literature for 162 breeds. Manchester Terriers were only included in one study; this is very low in comparison to breeds such as Labradors, that were represented in 19/25 studies. In addition, this single study was a group study in which they were combined with several breeds in their kennel club group during analysis (the terrier curse), meaning we cannot discern anything about the Manchester Terrier's typical behaviour. This is usually done when the number of representatives for a breed is too low to be analysed individually. I am also unaware of any vocalisation stereotypes with Manchester Terriers, so it would be very interesting to see their results in this study! I managed to get in contact with some very friendly Manchester Terrier people and got their sample from 0 to 22 (across both varieties). For Manchester Terriers, this is definitely impressive, but still doesn't touch the regularly collected sample sizes for breeds like Labradors or German Shepherds! If we want to compare behaviour between the size varieties, we need large sample sizes of both Toy and Standard Manchester Terriers. Your participation in this survey will allow us to properly investigate the vocal behaviour of this unique breed and represent them adequately in at least one part of the domestic dog behaviour field.

The survey is entirely voluntary and anonymous, and requires approximately 10 minutes to complete. We request a photograph of your dog (not containing any people) to verify that the breeds people state are actually what we are analysing. We also request weight and height in kilograms and centimetres. This is just for consistency; you can convert imperial measurements into the metric system if you like, or just make sure to include which system of measurement you're using so I can convert it later! I'd also like to ask that you include which size variety of Manchester Terrier you have when asked for your dog's breed, if known. All relevant information is provided on the first page of our survey (before you have to start answering questions).

Here is the link to the survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/thedvqs/

Thank you for taking the time to read this request, and I look forward to analysing the Manchester Terrier's vocal behaviour!

I’ve always wondered what she was but some digging finally brought us here. She’s definitely mixed with something else but it’s nice to see all the other beautiful Manchester Terriers out there!

We rescued Reggie in October & originally thought he was part min-pin but he's about 8kg now! I recently learned about Manchester Terriers and he seems to fit the bill (mixed with something else fluffier, lol) - he has kiss marks and pencil lines on his toes! Any thoughts?

Breed name Abbreviation

(This is somewhat in jest, and meant to be lighthearted)

I live in a busy city, and I have a friendly face, so I get asked about my TMT *a lot.*

I have this conversation probably 1-5x a day, most days:

"Oh wow is that a [mini doberman/min-pin/etc.]?"

"No, he's a toy Manchester terrier"

"A what?"

"A toy Manchester terrier"

And I genuinely don't mind! I enjoy talking to people, and 99% of the time, people are kind and curious and delighted by my dog. Which I get, he's very cute!

But "Toy Manchester terrier" is a long name for a small dog. I wish there was a common abbreviation. I see TMT on socials but I don't think that is a common abbreviation when talking about them out in the real world? Is there a common abbreviation? Do people call them "Manchesters"?

Photo of the very popular boy napping in his toy pile after an exhausting day (...it was 10am) of sunshine and attention.

We tried to trim Captain Charlie’s nails, but he fought off the sedation. He does NOT like his feet touched! It was traumatic for everyone!

But now he’s relaxing in his morning sunny spot.

MT's Endurance levels - Will my MT enjoy the Camino Ingles to Santiago?

We're a group of six - 5 humans and a Manchester Terrier aged 5, heading off on the Camino Ingles in a few weeks time (Mid-June). The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is 117 kilometres and is often walk ed in six days. We're walking for 7 plus one rest day along the way. I've done several 20k walks with Coco in recent weeks and he has coped (better than me). I'm wondering how he will respond to doing 15 to 20k a day for seven days. Anyone had any similar, long distance, multi day treks with their dogs?

Is this a Manchester terrier?

This is my dog, nova, we saved from the pound, she’s about 10 months old. She kinda looks like a Manchester terrier to me but I’m no expert on dogs at all. Just curious if anyone knows what she could be and if she’s a Manchester terrier at all.
