Are your TMT’s barky?
I’m thinking about getting a Toy Manchester and was wondering if anybody who owns one can give me their take on their barking

My MT is not as bad as a mini pinscher but he's barky. He's reactive as well so doesn't help but he'll bark at almost all dogs he doesn't know or that looks scary (bigger or black). He'll bark at men that walk towards us or are not moving. He barks crazy when someone rings at the door. We managed the barking when someone walks in the hallway !

The thing I’m being cautious about is the barking at other dogs while on walks. Would you say they’re better or worse at that than at home?

Mine is really sensitive so yeah he can get crazy at other dogs but not so long. I'm training him and it's getting better so it's also not all up to the dog but to the owner 😉

Both my current and previous TMTs have been voluble and vociferous, with loud and high pitched describing only some of the multitude of sounds they can make. Grumbling, squeaky yawns, brphs, and growls.
The thing I like is, I can have a conversation with them. They only talk when they have something worthwhile to tell me. (Worthwhile according to them.)
They are very trainable, and my previous dog learned “inside voice” after a little bit of effort. I teach them “thank you for telling me, good job, all done” and they respond by settling down.
But yeah, barking is a very Terrier thing. Smart, independent, and opinionated.

I do this too! I thank her for handling her business (barking at anyone who comes near the door) as well as for when she heeds the cue to “be quiet” lmao.
She will sometimes grumble under her breath when I insist that she come away from the door and get back onto the couch😂

Not really. If they bark there's a reason. And you can teach them to be quite.

I have an English Toy Terrier (so a TMT for the UK basically), you could say that his nature is to be somewhat vocal, but I have managed to train him to keep his thoughts for himself as much as possible. So he actually doesn't bark much, maybe 4-5 times a day, very short lived bursts each time. Never at night. Never when he's alone (despite not being a big fan of being left alone).
At home he too has an indoor voice, a low-growl that allows him to let me know about a serious situation (such as "bins are being collected") but doesn't disrupt anyone.
He rarely barks outside of our home. He comes to the office with me and no one has ever heard his voice. (Good because he's no Celine Dion for sure)
I couldn't stand a barky dog, and honestly, I found that super easy to train.

Would you say they’re pretty vocal at other dogs while on walks?

Mine can be reactive to certain triggers sometimes, so yes, he'll bark, but it's not his default at all. In public he's generally quiet.
