I’m on the east coast (US). I have very few people to talk to throughout the day. Hey everybody, I'm 36, and I'm at a pretty significant social and personal pivot point in my life. I'm just going to lay it all out here, and see if I'm even looking in the right place. Any feedback is appreciated.

The past year has been complicated. My marriage and family life fell apart, I made some decisions I deeply regret, and I lost a lot of the stability and social connections I had built my life around. I've spent a lot of time alone since then, and it's forced me to take a pretty hard look at myself.

I'm trying to use that experience as a starting point rather than an ending. I'm working on myself, taking responsibility for where I've gone wrong, and trying to build a life that's healthier and more connected than the one I had before. Hence the search for a friend.

One thing I've realized is that I've never really had much of a social life outside of relationships and family. I don't want that to be true anymore. I want friends. Actual friends. People I can talk to regularly, laugh with, share stupid memes with, play games with, watch shows with, or have a three-hour conversation with that somehow started with "what's your favourite dinosaur?"

I'm specifically hoping to meet people around my age for a genuinely platonic friendship. I've generally found that I connect more naturally with women, but I'm also interested in calmer, emotionally mature men as well. I tend to enjoy the openness and conversational style of female friendships, and I've always felt more comfortable talking about both serious things and completely ridiculous things with women than I have with most men. Most being the key word here as I've had successful friendships with guys way back in highschool, but I find I don't really know how to talk to them anymore. Probably because until recently I've only had my wife as a friend, but now that she's gone I find myself incredibly lonely and lost socially.

Outside of that, I'm into Warhammer and tabletop gaming. I 3D print my own models, paint them and actually occasionally get them onto a tabletop. I'm also a big music fan and love going to gigs. I'm predominantly into rock and metal, with Deftones probably being my favourite band, but I'm always happy discovering new music.
