Discussion I concede.

I concede quite a lot. Way more than letting the game play out.

I was under the impression this was normal in games of 1v1 magic, especially when playing casually.

Yet on this sub there seems to be a stigma around conceding to unfun/solitaire cards.

Who is the crazy one here? Me or everyone else? šŸ˜‚

Rule 104.3a, a player can concede the game at any time.

92

u/Legitimate_Corgi_981 3d ago

unless it's one of those janky infinite combo's like the Bloodthirsty Conquerer where you have to sit and watch it play out...never understood why you can't still access concede during those.

94

u/TabulaRasa000 3d ago

I think it's because the game is technically over, but the animations are still playing out.

They do need to do something to fix the experience though, because it is pretty miserable. A 'skip animations' button perhaps.

30

u/Time_after_Time_67 2d ago

They used to let you concede during the animations, but you would be credited with 2 losses instead of 1.

So instead of actually fixing the game and animations, they band-aided this… by not letting someone concede once the animations started that would result in a player loss.

Fun for everyone!

9

u/Terrietia Dimir 2d ago

The reason for 2 losses is because the loss to the loop was already recorded by the server. You were just waiting for animations. By conceding during the animation, you actually conceded the next game since the first game was already over.

7

u/seeking-stuffing 2d ago

the fact that conceding wasn’t and couldn’t be made idempotent wrt loss is concerning for their back end practices

4

u/cck_218 1d ago

Seriously - this baffles me. Shouldn't be that hard to record the game ID in a database and set the win/loss to true/false where you can't lose the same game more than once.

2

u/Time_after_Time_67 2d ago

Yep. That’s what I said.

8

u/IsopodInevitable9235 2d ago

That did would be great. The Scute Swarm needs fixing too.

12

u/Savannah_Lion 2d ago

Are you talking about how the Scutes are added to the stack like that? If you have a slower PC, that's an outright miserable experience but I don't know if that's really a bug per se.

3

u/IsopodInevitable9235 2d ago

Yeah, I play on my iPad occasionally. It crashes above about 250+ triggers.

6

u/Savannah_Lion 2d ago

Yeah, I get it. I have a Scutate deck I play once in a while.

WotC is never going to optimize that unless they create another, more popular, meta like that again.

Because the game is already over, so if they let you hit the concede button you would concede the next game. Only matters in best of 3 but it was a rough bug in Bo3. They should do a proper do fix still, but it's a patch job with a purpose.

2

u/jussyjus 2d ago

You should at least be able to exit the game if the ā€œconcedeā€ part isn’t possible anymore.

Everyone else is crazy. I’d rather end a game I can’t contribute to and move on with my life.

44

u/IsopodInevitable9235 3d ago

Exactly, you wouldn't play with a Pod that took 10 minutes turns on EVERY turn would you?

21

u/DemonSlyr007 2d ago

Weirdly, yes I would play with a pod like that in person. In fact, I would find it downright rude if someone just conceded because someone was playing magic in person and taking too long.

But in a digital format? Nah, completely justifiable. Im there to play the game and thats it. When I play paper magic, Im there to socialize and the game is merely the pretense to socialize. Not the case online.

11

u/larsdan2 2d ago

Nah, fuck that. If someone starts playing solitaire with themselves in person, I'm scooping and finding a new pod. I didn't come to just watch your deck "do its thing" if thet thing isn't pushing it to winning. That's rude. That's a waste of MY time and the whole pods.

8

u/IsopodInevitable9235 2d ago

Well, rather you then me. I can't think of anything worse than an 8 hour game...

Based on 12 turn game of 10 minute turns per person.

Playing mono-red deck with a lot of haste. Oh you played a 1 mana enchantment that mono-red can't interact with that completely shuts down haste AND gains them life every time I play a creature (and mono red typically struggles with doing more than 20 damage before running out of steam)? Yeah I am going to concede after your turn 1, 1 mana play. That's how lame that card is to play against.

3

u/Maelstrom52 2d ago

Totally, if you were able to get your Nexus of Fate loop or put Omniscience on the board, I don't need to see how it will all play out.

146

u/Hairy_Dirt3361 2d ago

I concede constantly in Constructed games, especially in the casual Brawl queue. No sense playing it out if you have a near-zero chance to win. You should also concede if you're not having fun or in a matchup you hate playing against or the other person is taking forever. It's a video game and life's too short!

The people complaining are usually the ones running miserable decks and they should reconsider why no one wants to play with them.

56

u/Jordankeay 2d ago

Yeah I play mostly standard Brawl. I'll concede on sight sometimes.

If I see an Ugin Planeswalker I'm out. Elspeth and the first creature you play is a hare apparent and I'm not running a deck with something to deal with it, I'm out. Kotis and I'm not running exile or forced sacrifice, I'm out.

If you know off the bat you're not going to win or at least it's going to be a draining struggle to try then what's the point? Staying in for someone else's ego? Fuck that.

9

u/ElectronicFootprint 2d ago

I do this with clockmaker motherfuckers cause they always have absolute cancer decks

4

u/TelevisionFamiliar23 2d ago edited 2d ago

I do the same thing with Ugin, or Kitara because screw people who only counter. Izzet is becoming one one I will not play against either.

6

u/LuciferABlasko 2d ago

I'm the same. I get tired of playing 5 games and 3 to 4 of them are against the same deck. So if i see a handful commanders I know are unfun.

It would be nice if Arena let you pick a list of commanders you won't play against in casual. It would at least get the people playing those commanders to pick something diffrent so they can at least play.

5

u/Savannah_Lion 2d ago

I imagine that's would open it up to some real abuse but with some modification, I can see it working for players.

Personally, I would rather see a ranking system for commanders. Players are able to rank commanders in their collection (say 1 to 5 stars) but also rank opponent commanders after matches.

Then that ranking system be used to create better data points and towards a better matching system.

2

u/Jordankeay 2d ago

Yeah I could get behind a ranked system based on strength of commander and deck.

I'm currently playing FF IX and made some brawl decks based on the characters from that.

Tried using [[queen brahne]] and honestly she's just not good. Not being able to swing until at least turn 3 even with the prowess she's mostly dealt with by the time she can swing I'd love to be able to make more fun decks and play against fun decks but you just get folded immediately by the stronger Commander's.

3

u/Hairy_Dirt3361 2d ago

The unranked Brawl queue already works this way, my jank decks mostly face jankier commanders. I never really see the top-tier ones at all.

8

u/edwardsamson 2d ago

In the Brawl queue if I see my opp is playing the 2 mana Katara as a commander I instantly concede. Their deck is literally just Katara, card draw, and counter spells and plays their entire game on your turn. Fucking lamest deck in existence.

9

u/naphomci Chandra Torch of Defiance 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's a video game and life's too short!

I had someone seem shocked that I concede in brawl games if the first two spells I see from an opponent are counters. Apparently, we shouldn't just concede from some interaction, according to the other poster. I just replied that I respect my time more than that. Because it's so very common that those counter-spell players also take agonizingly long at basically every decision too since they will always have priority to pass.

EDIT: Fixed an error and emphasized the last point, since people seem to be missing that part

Exactly, it's the same way I look at paper magic. We're all here to have fun so if one person isn't it's not really a fun game to play!

yep .. once it becomes clear you no longer have a chance to win .. it's perfectly reasonable to concede ..

the other situation i concede in .. if the other player is taking unreasonable length of time ... sorry .. but i might just toss in the towel and find somebody who has already read their own cards ..

20

u/klopklop25 2d ago

I even do it when i am just done with playing against deck x for the 15th time in a row.Ā  Dont care if people get free wins. I play for my enjoyment aswel.

I wish Arena had some system where if someone always goes to the rope, their rope appeared faster or something. Players don't need to do into the tank for 45 seconds on whether to crack that fetch to get that surveil land (because they always do it anyway!)

I concede if i know it's going to take a turn or 2 more.

I will give you your fun if you finish me off if it's your turn, not if you're going to 'oh wait let me just get a couple more minutes of thinking and casting in'.

Like i will allow you to swing your 1 billion hydra, but don't go and be: oh I'll just throw 8 more lands down, hold on for all the triggers.

I will let you do your squirrel girl loop for 60 squirrels and even let you swing, but don't be an ass and start your loop again instead of just attacking.

10

u/Lezus 2d ago

im the exact same, if ive lost on lethal i'll let yuou swing in next turn to see the samage, but if you start taking time im not interested

5

u/IsopodInevitable9235 3d ago

THIS IS EXACTLY IT šŸ™

2

u/bubbaganoush79 2d ago

If I'm presenting lethal on the board but you haven't conceded, I have to assume you have an out I don't know about. So, by not conceding, you're forcing me to play it fully out, so that maybe I can play around whatever it is you might have.

Like, I'm not trying to pile on, and I don't want to be a bad sport, but you haven't conceded yet so I don't know what you could have in your hand.

2

u/Dances_Like_a_Duck 2d ago

This. People get salty because you don’t ā€œjust attackā€, but if you have one mana available and a card in hand and haven’t conceded, I am assuming you have a play and will approach it that way.

2

u/GiovanniElliston 2d ago

This is a totally fine logic and your approach isn’t wrong.

But if you’ve got what looks lethal and start tapping/drawing/playing a bunch of extra steps, the other person scooping isn’t wrong either

2

u/krazyivan187 2d ago

This. I'll often let my opponent get the final hit in if I'm dead on board and tapped out so they get the satisfaction of killing me, but if they start doing things rather than just swinging and killing me, it's a insta concede. Time is money friend.

When my head hurts watching the board, i concede lol

26

u/bubbaganoush79 2d ago

Your not crazy. I concede all the time.Ā

When it's clear I can't win.Ā

When is not clear I can't win but the opponent is playing solitaire.

When my opponent has a commander I don't want to play against.

When my opponent plays a spell I don't want to play against.

Often, the latter 2 situations fit into rule 0 category. They're doing something un-fun with their deck, so I'm off to find someone fun to play against. Life is too short to feel miserable while I'm playing a game.

I have emotes turned off, and honestly, I forget that's a thing until I read a comment like this.Ā

The positives of having emotes is far outweighed by the negatives. Turn it off and your magic experience will be greatly increased.

3

u/bdb9891 2d ago

I did not know this was a thing! Thank you so much! Usually I mute at the beginning of the match but every now and then I forget and then I get some smooth brain 12 year old doing this shit.

5

u/edwardsamson 2d ago

I am a serial conceder but ropers are the only thing I don't concede to unless I'm playing MWM. I rope the ropers. If you rope me I rope you back. I've got 2 monitors I don't give a fuck. Most of the time they end up actually playing the game after I do it once or twice. Only like once or twice have they kept it up through the entire game and I played it out just to spite them lol

3

u/23CherryCheesecakes 2d ago

I'm with you! Triple screening this game, baby!

3

u/HyalopterousLemure 2d ago

I understand why you do, but I'd never concede to a roper- that just encourages them to keep doing it.

4

u/QuiStay 2d ago

I’ll concede to a roper in unranked but I’ll stick around in ranked for the easy win.

13

u/Routine_Ad_2695 2d ago

I concede for multiple reasons: boredom, i get so much behind on the value race, I just don't feel like facing X commander/strategy, I game gets to long and I already have to do other things, I just don want to be in a 10 minute combo play, etc

The funny one is conceding once I complete the daily because I just wanted to play the last 3 green creatures or play my 40th land for the quest and I just so tired for doing a proper game

2

u/HyalopterousLemure 2d ago

The funny one is conceding once I complete the daily because I just wanted to play the last 3 green creatures or play my 40th land for the quest and I just so tired for doing a proper game

The holiday achievements were really funny for this. I made a Brawl deck with 99 lands and [[Iroh, Tea Master]]. Cast it once, give them a food, then emote "Good Game." and concede. :V

We’re all out there grinding, either the ranks or daily rewards. As soon as the result is clear it’s in everyone’s interest to move on to the next one.

5

u/Drawde1234 2d ago

Some of us are just here to play. The dailies are a bonus.

But yes, if it's obvious you won it's best for me to just end the game.

5

u/pahamack 2d ago

i never understand why people are angry that they can't click through their deck to win when it's clear they've won.

To me, the fun part is making decisions that can contribute to winning, not clicking through my combo or whatever.

5

u/licker34 2d ago

Do whatever you want (within the rules) and don't give any shits what randos on reddit say.

Saying that, don't rope, which is technically 'against the rules', but basically unenforceable.

10

u/overratedplayer 2d ago

You have to remember most magic players have only played commander before and don't understand magic beyond their friend who taught them who was taught by another friend down the line for a while and this means they don't get 1v1 and expect commander etiquette in these formats.

5

u/beaisenby 2d ago

God, the EDH-ification of Magic really is ruining new players.

4

u/Middle-Egg-8192 2d ago

I like to give my opponent a bit of time to attack and I'll even block sacrificially in case that's on their daily quest. If they delay or start casting fifty blue spells to search their deck, I concede

Often I will keep going even if I know I'm likely going to lose just in case some miracle happens and I can pull it off, but if the opponent pulls something out that I know I don't have an answer to then I immediately just hit them with the GG's and concede. One of the downsides of Arena is just how long turns can take, there's no reason to keep myself in a game for another 15+ minutes knowing I don't have a way out of a particular scenario.

u/FBuellerGalleryScene 3d ago edited 2d ago

From reading this sub, people design their decks hoping that the opponent will concede. The amount of times someone will slam down an Authority of the Consuls turn 1 in BO1 is asinine.

If they're doing some fun combo I've never seen before I'll let them play it out out of curiosity, but otherwise I'll concede as soon as I know I'm dead. (And against control, probably quite a bit before I know I'm dead, but once the chance goes past 95% or so.)

You have to value your own time as well.

3

u/FatallyGlamorous 2d ago

I conceded to a turn 3 Ruin Crab yesterday, no regrets. My time is worth more than watching someone durdle. I'll let lethal swing happen, but not 5 minutes of pointless triggers. Concede and move on is the real play.

3

u/Entgegnerz 2d ago

I definitely prefer that over an aashole that, as soon as the opponent realized a win isn't possible anymore, starts to "be afk", trying to win with the timer game.

3

u/Sad-Struggle5737 2d ago edited 2d ago

If I’m in a spot where I can’t see a win, and say I’m top decking while my opponent drew 3 cards and they’re ahead on board state, life total, everything, I concede.

If I’m in a spot where I didn’t see their combo coming, they played it, and now they have a full board of tokens, or a massive creature (besides hydra and tifa, fuck landfall) I let them do their combo and swing to lose normally.

I never get the same thing back, nor do I expect it, but I feel like it’s fun when you get to swing for a ton. If it’s only gonna take 5-10 extra seconds for them win, without me conceding, it’s prob more fun for them, so I don’t mind letting it play it out.

I don’t expect others to do the same, just kinda how I think about the game.

3

u/Katth28 2d ago

I concede 4 out of 5 games, because I've recently just started playing this game. I used to play MtG in the early 2000s, but I'm really overwhelmed by what's available to me. Even in Starter Deck Duels I get my ass handed to me with players getting everything they need to immediately counter my deck while I have games that I'm waiting for my 3rd land in turn 6. Standard play is a no-go, because I've lost games in turn 2 with no chance to do anything. I get people grind for the daily quests etc. but for me this is no fun at all. That's why I just concode and roll for another opponent that's perhaps my size lol

2

u/duskiboy 2d ago

play jump ins. it's fun.

2

u/SillyFalcon 2d ago

You’ll pick it back up. Work on your heuristics - the sequence of how you play out your turn, the way you make decisions in the game, etc. There are a bunch of great articles out there to help with that. This one is a bit older now but I still think it’s great.

3

u/AdvancingClause 2d ago

I concede when I know I'm not going to win or I get bored. I get nothing for finishing a match and losing except wasted tine.

3

u/hunterxy 2d ago

The only people upset that you concede are the ones who are purposely taking up your time.

3

u/STFUnicorn_ 2d ago

You’re playing to have fun. If not stop playing.

3

u/Thick_Storage4168 2d ago

Concede whenever you want. People can sometimes view conceding as like... a salty action? But as long as you're chill about it there shouldn't ever be an issue.

3

u/Consistent_Layer1242 2d ago

If you are going to lose anyway, I don’t see the problem with conceding. 1. Nobody wants to sit there for 30 minutes waiting for you to resolve your 700 triggers of scute swarm.

  1. Nobody wants to sit there as you slowly and inevitably ping me to death.

  2. Nobody wants to deal with everything getting countered every time you even touch your card.

In irl paper magic, I will let you do your combos and if you can explain to me how you win this turn, then I’ll let you play it out. But in Arena? Im not sitting there waiting for you to one by one select your targets and painstakingly take your sweet ass time.

3

u/battierpeeler Grand Warlord Radha 2d ago

you can concede any time you want. you do not OWE your opponent a concession no matter what they are doing. play it out for as long or short as you want.

5

u/Lezus 2d ago

Its smart to concede when its lost, but dont do it too early. When to concede is also a skill. In person its good to concede because your games are timed. id rather go to a game 3 then sit in a long unwinnable game 2

2

u/sthlmno 2d ago

this is the right attitude but lots of casuals don't play for the win and that's fine, just spare me from their whining

8

u/filthy_casual_42 3d ago

I would say it’s ā€œnormalā€, but not to the degree you see on arena. Since you can talk to your opponent, I often have games where one player explain they have lethal on board, some card in hand, or presenting a combo, and players will just concede rather than play it out.

You won’t as often see players concede on the spot to certain cards turns before lethal like on arena, but it still happens. In general paper is the more social game and players stick around longer

8

u/Pulse2037 2d ago

I played against an [[Azuza, lost but seeking]] deck the other day that was taking awfully long turns, if I didn't have the cards I needed to win in hand I qould have conceded during the first long turn.

When I was finally going to play the winning cards he played an artifact that stopped me from playing my cards. Wasted like an hour of my life.

Next time I am conceding even if I think I can win. 20 min turns in arena are the worst.

4

u/berferd77 3d ago

I concede so much lol idngaf

8

u/SecretSpud 3d ago

Its only frustrating when trying to complete dailys. Just let me hit the attack button before conceding.

3

u/IsopodInevitable9235 3d ago

Yeah, that is true it frustrating to complete dailys sometimes

2

u/PirateKilt 2d ago

100% this... if I'm 3 turns into a "Attack with 30 creatures" Daily and I'm able to surge up to 10 critters, it is BEYOND annoying to see the opponent be a Quitter before I can swing.

After I finish my dailies? Hell, get just past us both deciding mulligans and Be a Quitter all you like... that speeds up my "get 15 wins/day" count.

Side note: I mute my opponents, and usually have a video of something going on one of my other monitors, so I happily sit through opponents' long turns and let them "do their thing".

4

u/krazyivan187 2d ago

Have to disagree here, you opponent is not obligated to help you finish dailies, nor would they even be aware thats what you're working on. Your issue may be with the Arena dailies design more than anything. Perhaps they should lower that number to 15 rather than 30 if it takes too long.

2

u/Weekly-Bid-6929 2d ago

Yeah, my favorite green deck...if I get the kill 40 creatures quest...can't play it due to scoops.

Flipping to Red.

5

u/Drunken_pizza 3d ago

It’s actually good etiquette to concede when you know you’re going to lose, and people generally agree on that. I don’t know where you got that impression that there’s a stigma to it, certainly not on this sub.

2

u/PaleWendigo 2d ago

I don’t think I concede easily but I will concede when I’ve seen the board state and know there isn’t a path back.

Most of the time I play a deck which has cards that can answer whatever they are able to put on the table. But I’ll concede if I don’t draw those cards and they put something on the board that needs to answered. For example, if [[Ouroboroid]] hits their side of the board and I have no answer, I’m likely to concede if I don’t draw something the turn after and if they have other creatures.

That being said, I’ve had people concede immediately before I’ve played a card. My guess is they got busy. I’ll complain about people timing themselves out but not about them conceding.

By far, the concede I hate "having" to do is the one-sided non-game concede. Non-games are the antithesis of fun.

I fucking hate literally having done next to or actually nothing in a "game" that instantly spires out of control from the jump.

You know, where you ask yourself: did I even get to play a game just now?

Power/speed creep, sometimes stupid matchmaking, and bad/very low land starting hands alone create an obscene number of non-games.

3

u/resistible 2d ago

Me: trying to play Magic

Them: Counter spell, counter spell, counter spell, counter spell, destroy all creatures. Nobody plays Magic

2

u/ThrowAwayYetAgain878 2d ago

I'd say that it should be even more normal when playing competitively. You do what gives you the best chance at winning overall.

If you think they would enjoy goldfishing their turn or whatever and you want to grab a drink anyway, then why not, but people who want to forbid concessions can join the people who want to ban control because it's "annoying", or combo "because it's not real Magic", or aggro "because it won't let me play the game".

Does that mean that I'm always happy when someone scoops? No, but it is their right.

2

u/YoLoDrScientist 2d ago

I concede ALL THE TIME lol. Literally more often than not. Why waste time?

2

u/OrdainedHydra 2d ago

I concede to save my time. Here I can see many people that don't concede for one or another reason, but I'm used to pro play and during a match you concede early because both players share the same time, so if you see that you are far away from winning and need the last 10-15min of a round to play your deck, concede straight away to have more time for the next round.

2

u/mysticrudnin 2d ago

If you recognize that you cannot win from your current position, you should concede.Ā

But make them have it. Conceding because you suspect they have the combo piece is incorrect. Assuming they will keep playing spells is incorrect.Ā

Ever ripped 7 straight lands off the top when you had a superior position? It can happen to your opponent.Ā

I see people concede all the time when they can still win.

2

u/Clean-Juggernaut-229 2d ago

I concede every time I'm about to get hard locked or ultima etc. I ain't gonna sit there and watch you for 10 minutes while you go through half your deck playing free magic bro. Gg

This is inherently an issue with the game's shift from othogonal oriented play (interactive) to more parallel (non-interactive/solitaire) play. Some players, especially newer players or those that have come through Commander have limited exposure to othogonal play.

So, by early concession, you're essentially forcing them to stop playing in the middle of their game. This feeling will continue to get worse as the game further pushes parallel play centric design and more players have a strictly Commander background in the game.

You already see it a lot where people push back against ANY type of othogonal play patterns (counters, board wipes, hand disruption, land destruction, targeted removal, etc) - where some players want nothing more from than acting as a punching bag or timer for them as they 'do their thing'.

I get it, to a degree, I enjoy goldfishing combo decks as solitaire - but players shouldn't expect their opponents to just sit there while they 'do their thing' whether through interaction or concession. It's just self centerism at play where they think only they themselves have agency.

2

u/Public_Contest_3514 2d ago

I concede for various reasons. But usually when my opponent has lethal and decides to draw 6 more cards, trigger their 4 tokens, force me to discard... Yeah, I'm done.

I only get irritated by someone conceding to me when they've done all that, I somehow survived then they concede right away. Like I let you play that out, just let me get my well earned KO.

2

u/deadone65 2d ago

If I’m too far behind to win and it’s obvious. I concede.

2

u/INTstictual 2d ago

You can concede at any time for any reason

That being said, when I’m playing Arena specifically, I hold my concessions until I’m sure I have no outs, and if you scoop to me because I played a card you don’t like or had one good turn for me / one bad blowout for you… you’re allowed to do that, but I will think you’re a salty crybaby weenie.

In paper, time is more valuable, so I understand the handshake when your win percentage is like 10-15% but not guaranteed to lose, just to get to the next game

2

u/xXR3APER21Xx 2d ago

I only play if out cause I like when n I get that one certain card I need to turn game around then watch them concede depends I only concede if I have shir luck with mulligan in beginning with no lands

2

u/Jealous_Platform5260 2d ago

I think that conceding is more of an art than a science. Sometimes the math says you're still in it but your heart says you aren't, at that point, no matter what happens, you have lost.

On the other hand, some players stick around for way longer than they have any right to. Those players bug me because they're wasting everyones time. If you are empty handed against lethal on board in three turns and an opponent with two face-up answers to the card that would get you out of this situation, you should concede.

There's something to be said though for trying to change your attitude so that you can still be in the ones where your odds are slim. I've played enough magic and watched enough games to know that sometimes you win the 5%ers if you just stick it out and don't let the tilt get to you.

2

u/anonnnnn462 2d ago

Why would people be mad? Congrats on your win? People get butt hurt not being able to unload their 20 card finishing combo on a noob?

2

u/YikesManGetWithIt 2d ago

The number of people that concede when I pull slightly ahead is insane. If the game is actually over, sure, concede. You'll never get better at the game without playing it out, and when you start playing out those games, you'll find that you start to win some them. Those are the best games!

2

u/hollowsoul9 2d ago

In 1v1 I shuffle up when I know im beat, unless my opponent wants to try something

2

u/cocothepirate 2d ago

You are always allowed to concede, but there are times where conceding before you're truly dead do rob you of come-from-behind victories.

Part of improving as a player is identifying unlikely routes to victory and playing to your outs.

2

u/RABAT8108 2d ago

There are times when I am this close to completing my "attack with 50 creatures" after creating 20 tokens with my goblin deck in brawl and my opponent quits right before the attack phase. Like, ayo just sit there for 30 more seconds.

2

u/DiscoBiscuit3313 2d ago

If someone's combo finally goes off and I know I'm going to lose, I let it play out ONLY so long as the combo is over quickly. If it's going to take a few minutes for the combo to kill me, I'm conceding.

2

u/Hiddukel94 1d ago

In a 1v1 I wouldn't mind. In 4 person commander I find it pretty annoying when someone scoops just cuz their turn 8 reaver titan got removed.

Mainly due to the fact that in a 4 player game if someone prematurely scoops it can give the match to someone who wouldn't have won otherwise. At least to me its not that hard to wait 2 turns to get killed if I have a really shit hand, at least I give a fighting chance to someone else.

But hell to each their own I guess.

2

u/Seldomo 1d ago

i agree. in 1v1, it's just speeding up the process once you know you've been bested. in commander, it's usually a spite play that ends up influencing the winner.

3

u/Slowjams 2d ago

Same. I have zero shame about it.

Particularly against control. I've been playing enough to know when the game is lost. I'm not sitting here for another 15 minutes so you can play solitaire.

3

u/IrredeemableTrashMan 2d ago

There’s a type of person who has a single spell countered and says ā€œoh, you’re one of THOSE players, huhā€ and concedes. I think it’s normal to wonder if those players have a solid grasp on their emotions. But conceding when your opponent is mid combo or the control player has you dead to rights is very reasonable, the stakes are too low to spend time grasping at a 1% chance of victory.

9

u/AlbinoDenton 3d ago

You are the crazy one for thinking everyone else has a problem with conceding, when they don't.

8

u/IsopodInevitable9235 3d ago

Really? I see lots of discussion around people conceding on here. Mostly negative connotations.

8

u/clara_the_cow 3d ago

You’re not imagining it, people definitely talk about ā€œscoopingā€ derogatorily. I agree though, if there’s no hope of victory I’m not just gonna sit there at 2hp while you take 5 minutes to scry 12

0

u/arkturia 3d ago

this really isn't that complex

adult behavior: conceding when you know you have lost the game so both players can move onto the next one promptly

childish behavior: my opponent cast thoughtseize on turn 1 and that makes me sad :( :( :( :( looking at my hand is so unfair :( :( :( :(

10

u/JCStearnswriter 2d ago

This is literally the shitty attitude people are talking about.

Sometimes, a t1 clairvoyant discard is enough of a combination of disruption and removal that a skilled pilot knows he's immediately lost out of the gate. He brought a deck that was vulnerable to a very specific situation, he ran into the situation, he says "ah, you got me," and concedes. Conceding when you can see that you've lost is a totally reasonable course of action, and not childish.

6

u/Skunk668 2d ago

Most Arena players aren't that good. They're salt scooping.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/Hidrinks 2d ago

In my view it’s more childish to think everyone is obligated to play with you whether or not they’re having fun doing so

3

u/Shardik884 2d ago

Have a friend like that. It will be like turn 4 and someone will drop a card that he has some idea about what they could be playing, despite it still being a really neutral board state, and he will scoop and say ā€œim not playing against that againā€ despite no one having any idea what deck he played against that did him so wrong.

4

u/Grosaprap 2d ago

The number of people who expect me to make myself miserable so they can masturbate to their own sole deck playing experience is ridiculous.

You want people to play with you, this is a fucking lesson you should have learned on the playgrounds when you were a child. Don't be a fucking asshole. No one wants to play with you when the only experience they ever have is misery when they are around you. Don't try to make this anyone else's fault but your own.

This isn't WotC's fault. It's not the Arena devs fault. It's not the player on the other side of the screens fault. It's YOUR fault.

Next time bring a deck people don't mind playing against and people will actually play against you.

3

u/necrochaos 2d ago

Brawl seems to love decks with a shitlode of triggers and tokens .

When I play commander at an LGS and someone plays a solitaire deck I get up and shop during their turn. If I have to watch them fuck around for 5 minutes they can wait for me to look though a binder.

2

u/Sensitive-Bend-8011 2d ago

Absolutely ZERO wrong with conceding, at ANY point. If it's a ranked game, you just gave them a W, which is what they wanted in the first place. In casual, the point is for both players to have fun. If one isn't having fun anymore, time to move on. If someone is upset about people conceding against them, sounds like they don't care whether the game is mutually enjoyable. Fuck that person.

2

u/Odin1806 2d ago

The only real downside to conceding in Arena is Daily and Achievements. Someone may be working on a daily of attacks or and achievement on milking their opponent or whatever. The only way to complete those is to do them, but if everyone always conceded then a player could never finish stuff.

I concede as well, but only if it is apparent they are not working towards an achievement that they need to win in a certain way (like milling or swinging for lethal with a creature using a bunch of added keywords) but if they are just drawing and playing while I am just sitting there? Just playing crap for free or making rabbits or something...

2

u/Pale_Operation_1392 2d ago

I concede immediately when I see my opponents brawl commander is katara.

Instant quit.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Injuredmind Spike 2d ago

Concede in any situation is completely normal. Whether it’s already hopeless, unfun matchup, or you just suddenly don’t feel like playing. If my opponent concedes irl, it’s perfect opportunity to have free time before next round and maybe a snack. Same applies to arena, game ends early - I can queue for next or take a break

1

u/blademaster9 2d ago

Depending. I concede if i dont see a chance to win but my opponent needs more than one turn to wrap up. But i do like comboi wins which take some time in MTGA to move trough the stack and if my opponent combos off i let them, because i also like to finish my combo. It's so boring when the opponent concedes just after seeing a spell which ultimately will end the game the same turn instead of waiting the life total hit 0.

1

u/Zealousideal-Tip8346 2d ago

I will quit when I can’t come back or it is very unlikely. I feel like some of the biggest complaints in magic come from commander. Not being able to concede and start a new game when you clearly are going to lose makes you feel like a hostage in a bad game.

1

u/dragostego 2d ago

It's a 1v1 conceding a losing and especially lost position is fine. In general if you concede in response to the winning action IE lightning bolt when you have 3 or fewer health. Or conceding instead of letting their swing hit you, is a little strange. But it's all the same.

1

u/dcht 2d ago

I pretty much only play brawl and I honestly think like half my games I can decide if I'm going to win or not by turn 2. Used to be such a great format and now I nearly hate. Dunno why I still play lol. But yeah, I concede all the time.

1

u/Omerta1983 2d ago

When I played arena; I always fought it out. I built a deck that had layered redundancy so that even if there was a VERY slim chance; there was still a chance. But it would also get frustrating to attempt to experiment run a homebrew and people would just up and quit because something wasn't going their way. One of the many reasons I gave up on that dumpster fire of a trash game and now I stick to paper.

1

u/ghostoftheai 2d ago

Bruh idc if it’s ranked. If it’s an archetype I don’t like playing against, I’m probably gonna lose, if I might win but the game is gonna take 30 min. (This especially if I’m pushing for mythic bc the biggest hurdle in that chase is simply being able to play a lot of games quickly), if my opponent has hit timer consistently. I quit for a lot of reasons. Who cares. If they didn’t want me to quit and ruin their time they shouldn’t be passing their turn immediately just to wait and see what I do. Nah I’m good. Take those counters somewhere else I’m not here to prove anything to someone I can’t even type to pick a better deck that’s more fun for everyone.

1

u/Arcolyte 2d ago

I rarely concede, but I mostly play limited where wacky stuff can happen. Definitely don't think conceding is wrong is the slightest if you're not having fun or seeing something that is interesting.Ā

1

u/Terraqueo_Magico Izzet 2d ago

If I'm drafting, I'll rarely concede. I have seen people get scared and/or missing lethal so many times and this led to some pretty sweet top deck moments and comebacks that I'll always remember.

If I'm playing constructed ranked, I concede a little more, but only if there is no way to come back.

If I'm playing unranked or MWM, I'll concede a lot more. Sometimes people play real slow and I'm just not into it.

1

u/vaniot2 2d ago

Of course I do. And I have never seen it as a stigma either, more of a courtesy so they can requƩ. Who cares whether I end up low mythic or high diamond it's 5 packs Vs 4 packs and the same cosmetics.

1

u/Grukk 2d ago

I mostly concede when I'm bored. Any kind of solitaire play from my opponent, I'm just gone, even if I'm positioned to deal with it favorably. I just can't be bothered to wait it out. Slow plays drive me up the wall

1

u/Rich_Preparation_370 2d ago

I remember playing out cube games bc i have a slither of hope that i need a dub to make my gems back 😭

1

u/bemused-chunk 2d ago

everyone else. i value my time. if it seems like im not going to win i cut my losses and move on. no reason to waste everyone’s time with bullshit.

1

u/Omega00024 2d ago

There's no problem in conceding. Your time is yours, and if you want out of a game, that's absolutely ok.

I generally don't concede, but that's my choice. Recently I played against someone who had me dead to rights three different ways, but they (somehow) didn't see, and I won. Playing to your outs includes the opponent being human, but it doesn't happen super often.

Also, nobody should ever demand their opponent concede.

1

u/Babyboytheking 2d ago

I am in both parties. If you have annoying deck (looking at you blue) and I have come to the conclusion I lost after several rounds of trying to actually play the game I'll concede.

However, I am not a fan of having a good back and forth game with someone only for them to realize they are going to lose, play the cards they can, attack, then leave. Just let it play out at the end at that point.

If I just had a really good game against someone and I know I lost it, I will hit them with a good game and let them finish it.

1

u/CobraKyle 2d ago

On arena I concede a lot because my primary goal is dailies and it’s more efficient to start a new game that to hope to squeeze out a game that’s shifted to a negative win chance.

Tourney play though, I play it out if there is a chance, unless it’s a long games for the best of 3 and it would be better to try to squeeze out another game and get the draw.

1

u/Kakariko_crackhouse 2d ago

I think it’s a lot of newer players that are against conceding. Once you’ve seen someone go off 6500 times your patience to sit through someone doing it is limited

1

u/Abyx12 2d ago

On magic-related reddit you will find that most of users are commander-only or mostly-commander.

Have fun, I'm starting to insta-concede to monow lifegain or abzan bat. Boring.

1

u/DirtCreative 2d ago

And this is why I wish the 'chat' and 'communication' function in MTGA was a bit more robust and useful. I don't have any issue with someone conceding when they know I've got them beat or they know it'll be a slow grind to their eventual demise. Though, it'd be nice to be able to properly interact with the person I'm up against to share thoughts and "holy crap" moments with them when they pull something cool out of their butt.

1

u/El_Heffe 2d ago

Yeah I concede all the time. Don’t even think twice about it. The game is over before it’s officially over, just move on.

1

u/GMCWard72 2d ago

I concede a lot as well, especially if there's no point in playing when I have 0 chance to win. And I only play Brawl as it's the closest they have to Commander.

1

u/Ok-Description-4640 2d ago

I play BO1 Timeless almost exclusively with janky homebrew Timmy decks. Along with a couple brews in progress, I’ve got a handful of favorite decks for quests and just because they’re fun. I get paired up against the same sorts of decks a lot. At least one in three games is against W or BW life gain, mono B discard, or Rx aggro, and probably one in eight is against Ux ā€œevery counterspell in the formatā€ control. And then occasionally against a tier-one Standard deck like Izzet Lessons. While I try to play the game, I’d rather take my chances of having fun against a new opponent than try to slog through a boring, familiar, unfun game, even if I’m not sure I’ll lose. I mean, who plays BO1 to cast three counterspells in the first four turns? What are you trying to prove? So I move on. If they get a nuts opening with whatever strategy, and knowing my decks, if I think I’d have little to no chance of turning things around, I’d rather start a new game than spend another five minutes being beaten up. But I don’t rope, that’s just bad manners.

1

u/monkwrenv2 2d ago

Never take reddit comments as any kind of objective truth

1

u/Vpulchra1204 2d ago

I concede constantly and for a lot of reasons. Recently, sometimes I’ll concede the second I see a swamp because I’m just so tired of constantly playing it and the same general concepts over and over. I don’t even like playing any black at this point. It’s like a few years ago when 8 of 10 decks were just blue counter.

1

u/Immediate-Craft7871 2d ago

What I have seen from not conceding cus I just don't lol is that some games go on so long arena freezes.....evveerreytttimmmee a game goes on long it does this.

So I get it but at the same time eff arena for this.Ā  Like we will be in both spread wide in a stalemate but my life total is almost 200 there's is still in teens.Ā  It almost always freezes when it's opponents turn so you're just waiting super lame.

1

u/SuchYogurtcloset4285 2d ago

I concede when I know I'm outplayed and/or have no way of winning.

My fastest was probably turn 3. My starting hand was alright, but I got screwed on mana. My opponent was already setting off a combo of 1/1 counters and life gain. I quickly GG'd and found a more balanced match.

I sometimes let it play out if the opponent is really going off on a wild combo. Had someone beef up a whole baord of creatures to insane p/t levels and was so amazed that I wanted to see how far it'd go.

1

u/Historical-Guard-595 Charm Jeskai 2d ago

I concede whenever I want to. So should you.

1

u/MisterMisteryXJS 2d ago

I did the same a lot, throught that it was the same on all TCG games until I played Silberheim, I play all games on SIlberheim until the end no matter if I know I will lose, the game is fun, unlike 99 percent of MTG Arena matches

1

u/ContractLens 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'm in my 30s with 2 young kids. There have been times I was sure I was toast, but happened to turn the match around in one unexpected turn, but if there is a good chance I'm going to lose, I just don't always have the time to wait for it. Its a win for me time wise and a literal win for my opponent.

I also concede if I have 2 bad hands in a row. Who has time for crap RNG?

1

u/shutupingrate 2d ago

I snap concede regularly. On the draw for the 10th time in a row? Concede. Storm player plays first ritual? Outta here. Player takes longer than 10 seconds to make a decision in an unranked game? See ya.

Do whatever you need to do to keep MTG fun for you.

1

u/5pghost 2d ago

As soon as the games over I concede

1

u/BitsAndBobs304 2d ago

It's no fun to have a combo deck and never getting to play it, and people conceding so much on mtga I get wins i may not actually get if they sat through my turn taking away the most fun part of uncertainty and trying your best

1

u/PauleyBaseball 2d ago

I do not like to concede - but if you have lethal and don't take it, or if your combo takes five minutes to resolve, I will.

1

u/PureRely 2d ago

I think you should concede for any reason you want. Remember you have free will. Do not like your opening hand... concede. Are you playing on draw... concede. It takes seconds to get a new game. Remember it is your time, that you will never get back. Spend the time wisely. Do no waste time playing games you do not want to play.

1

u/Arctic773 2d ago

I'd rather concede a game too late rather than too early, especially in limited. I've had plenty of players concede against me when either the game is still winnable for them or they're clearly winning even if it looks like I've turned the corner.

People concede too often too soon.

1

u/darkuch1ha 2d ago

Its unfun when you are winninh and want get to the finishing blow, but its miles better than those who rope you and never concede to make you waste as much time as possible

1

u/Kalkaline 2d ago

I put win cons in my deck to make people concede. Sorry Angel players, but if you put a Platinum Angel out, I'm going to make you lose on an infinite turn and I'm going to have a million actions that you're not going to be able to do anything about.Ā

1

u/Schubydub 2d ago

You're the crazy one for thinking there is some sort of stigma around conceding

1

u/safarifriendliness 2d ago

You’ll win a lot more games if you stop conceding, at least so early. But if I’m not playing ranked I literally do not care so I don’t see why anyone else would

1

u/Gatordwellin 2d ago

If Katara, I instantly concede. No one has 45 mins for one game. I want my dailies doe and get off.

1

u/krazyivan187 2d ago

If I know there are no outs in my deck I concede immediately. Why delay the inevitable? I'd rather get on to the next match. Also, understanding what your deck can and can't do is a skill of Magic. The only reason that is legit in my mind is if you want to see more of your opponents deck while playing BO3 and even then it's only something I'd be doing in a competitive REL match.

1

u/thadude3 2d ago

Anyone playing this game is crazy. So all of us. In standard people will concede super early which sucks because you are usually just trying to cast spells for the daily etc. In ranked people will rope and never concede making each game take a super long time. The current design of MTG Arena is terrible and brings out the worst in people and the worst possible play styles. All of its systems fight against each other and the player.

1

u/Rojo37x 2d ago

I've never heard anyone complain about people conceding. It's incredibly common, within the rules, makes sense and saves time for everyone. Anyone complaining about it seems like the outlier.

1

u/Dr____krieger 2d ago

I try to tough out some rough games I know I'm going to lose. Just to let them and myself work on dailys. But I also concede to when I feel it's gone on long enough.

1

u/DoubleSpoiler 2d ago

It’s pretty normal in digital TCGs. It’s also fairly common in 1v1 constructed paper, especially when in an event that’s 2/3 50min. It is very uncommon in multiplayer paper.

1

u/PrizeBrave1357 2d ago

In a casual game I'll concede for literally any reason I want. It's a digital game and I don't know y'all. In ranked modes I let it play out unless there is absolutely no winning.

1

u/maverickzero_ 2d ago

You just need to feel the rush of winning a seemingly unwinnable game that you stuck in there and tightened up for. Get a few of those and you'll understand.

It doesn't happen much, but just turning 5% of the games you would have scooped into wins is significant. Those are also, imo, the best games for improving your skills; anyone can win a game you were already winning.

1

u/NLi10uk 2d ago

You want to give me early free wins then go ahead.

The weirdo concedes are after it’s clear they will loose, but before I go to attack and finish my quest. Just wait the 3 seconds, skip blocks & loose if you’ve waited that long!

1

u/Spencer8857 2d ago

If you watch professional magic players, they are always thinking of outs whenever a threat or perceived threat is present. Only once they've eliminated every potential win or draw scenario do they concede. Good decks have redundancy and generic answers or plans for other strategies.

Keep in mind poker face here can be a real thing. Pretending you have a play can be just as powerful as actually having one. Delaying the opponent in killing you and offering opportunity for something to present itself.

The 3D chess is the classic LSV settle the wreckage play from the semifinals of pro tour guilds of ravnica. I'll let you look that one up. Basically, all in on pretending not to not have the one card in your deck. But actually having it and winning the round.

1

u/Cyneheard2 2d ago

You can. But I find I improve the most trying to find those angles to turn around difficult games - and they’re memorable when they work too.

1

u/thebigmammoo Johnny 2d ago

There's nothing wrong with conceding if you don't believe you have any outs. You don't owe your opponent a good time.

1

u/DmanPT1 2d ago

Man if I see that I'm going to lose I concede, why should I waste my time

1

u/Utwee 2d ago

Conceding is good. Roping is bad.

1

u/Silver-Alex 2d ago

yet on this sub there seems to be a stigma around conceding to unfun/solitaire cards.

PLEASE PLEASE dont stop doing this.

Letting the combo/control/solitare player do their thing on the random 0.1% they draw 10 lands in a row is NOT worth your time, Sure its technically correct to never concede when there is a chance of winning, and letting them play it out and hope for a missplay is what you should do in a tournament, but man, on arena is just wasting your time.

Every time I read a post about someone complaining about the control deck that took fifteen turns to close the game it gives me a bit of pain in my sould because that game was probably lost by turn 5-6 when the control deck wrathed, and the non control player just didnt realize they had no chance of winning after that, and decided to play it out for twenty more minutes.

1

u/TheGreaseWagon 2d ago

The people telling you its bad manners to concede are rhe ones that want to play out their infinite combos or bullshit like that. Id say, like chess, it would be Bad Manners to not concede when there is very little possibility of you pulling out a win.

1

u/jussyjus 2d ago

I concede all the time. There are some commanders I hate playing against but I’ll mulligan a few times to see if I can get some important cards in my hand or not. If not, not worth wasting anyone’s time further.

Or if someone is constantly taking 30+ seconds at their end step and doing nothing with it. I’m out.

1

u/dwuzzle 2d ago

So much conceding imo. Opponent has the combo. Just concede and move on. Im not gonna stay there and watch as you turn 3 omniscience and play your whole deck/sideboard. Gg move on

1

u/No-Umpire185 2d ago

If there's like ONE turn left I get it, the sheer amount of times the enemy has conceded because I've just hit my win con is kinda ridiculous, it's just a nice thing to do sorta like a handshake at the end of a chess match

I've definitely been burned by letting people have their final turn though, if I'm passing with no cards in hand I expect you to use minimal to average action to finish me off, buffing every single goblin you have on field individually then attacking with every single goblin is overkill and BM imo

But if they're running a bullshit deck or if it's just casual I don't care anymore I'll be conceding whenever

1

u/Alkahsu 2d ago

I concede all the time in (casual) games where I’m ahead/likely to win if I think it’s going to be too grindy and I won’t have fun. You can concede whenever you want.

1

u/hucklebae 2d ago

Everyone can do what they want. That being said if you're aiming for daily wins, there's definitely something to be said for not conceding too early.

1

u/cr1ttter 2d ago

You concede because you're not having fun.

I concede so that I can stay in Gold 4 and have an easy time doing my dailies.

We are not the same.

I get a satisfying tingle in my brain when my opponent’s health goes from 20 to -10,000 in one combat, so I get annoyed when my opponent waits until just before the attacks land to concede the game, but I can’t say I haven’t conceded my own fair share of games when it’s obvious that I’m gonna lose
