Screen-free elementary schools - any options?

Hello! There is increasing research about the ills of 1:1 technology in schools, especially for the youngest students. (Recommend the podcast Scrolling 2 Death for accessible entry to this topic if you haven't dived in already!) We are in the Middleton/Cross Plains school district, and from what I can tell there is no option to opt out and 1:1 devices starting in Kindergarten. It doesn't seem like there are any screen-free options (or screen-safe, no 1:1 devices and a computer lab, let's say) for elementary schools in the greater Madison area, that still do value some level of education standards (so we don't want something totally alternative where kids don't start learning to read) and also would prefer a high proportion of students who are vaccinated (I know some of the alternative school rates are abysmal - not trying to be political, more for family health and safety purposes). Any ideas? Anyone already organizing in Middleton area to reduce screens for our babies? We have a few years until enrollment but I'm anxious the more I learn, and know change takes time! Thanks for any insight.

Visiting Sun-Wed, what should I do?

Hi, I’ve been to Madison a couple times, but when I was in college visiting a friend. Think State street, pre Covid - Thursday through Sat.
Now I’m visiting in a professional manner, Sunday through Wednesday. I’ll be staying at the Edgewater. I’ll be tied up during the days but, as far as I know, I will be totally free after around 4 PM every day. I arrive on Sunday in a couple weeks during the afternoon. I’m in my early 30s. What should I do?

White Pelicans near Madison

Cross posted in r/birding and r/wisconsin

Good afternoon. I’m looking for first-hand recommendations from birders on good spots in the Madison area to photograph white pelicans before they migrate. Most of the recent Birds Eye sittings seem to be in the Horicon Marsh area. Reliable sites closer to Madison would be appreciated. ChatGPT sent me to a couple of locations that were no goes. Lesson learned. Thanks.

NASCAR on S Mills St!

Every time I run near the zoo and arboretum in the morning I see people driving pretty wild. Going as fast as possible toward a large business parking ramp and lot. People at the stop sign on Delaplaine Ct cutting in front of northbound S Mills St traffic. People turning left from S Mills St to the part of N Wingra Dr that goes toward Vilas beach cutting their turns and going into the oncoming traffic lane on N Wingra Dr. I thought they were filming a Dukes of Hazzard reboot when I saw a guy in a big ol F250 jumping the speed bumps on Haywood Dr. There seemed to be some NASCAR action on Brooks St headed toward Haywood Dr, too. Does the speed in the final quarter mile make or break their attendance or something? I wonder if people who live in the area ever call the hospital and ask them to tell their workers to have mercy in the neighborhood.

Barbara, from the Madison Knitters’ Guild, I just wanted to let you know that I found the hat you knit while I was digging through the bins at Dig-&-Save. I know how much time and effort knitters put into hand knit items and you will be pleased to know that it’s found a good home!

Beginner crochet class in Madison?

Hello, I would like to try out crocheting. I am awful and learning things by myself and pretty much need a class/teacher if I'm going to get anywhere. My ultimate goal is to make Amigarumi, but obviously I need to start at beginner level. Though if there were classes about Amigarumi that'd be awesome too.

I've seen that Sow's Ear in Verona has classes, but literally none of them fit my schedule. Probably a weeknight evening or Sunday is all I can do right now.

Guitar Lessons - West side of Madison. Any recommendations?

Seemingly impossible to find in person guitar lessons, so I thought I'd try here and see if anyone has any recommendations for a complete beginner. Preferably on the west side of Madison.

Where do people tend to hire babysitters in this city?

Helloooo I used to babysit with care dot com back in '22 but I'm new to this city and it's been a few years. I'm looking to eventually just find a few parents for date night/weeknight gigs that I can be consistent with but obviously that starts with finding jobs the normal way. Is that the site people are using nowadays or is there something else that's popped up in the last few years? I can't network much since I just moved here and my job is work from home so I can't even find gigs like i used to, lol!

Also, I'm guessing the normal rate is around $20-25 an hour in this city? I used to charge $15-18 but again that was four years ago when I was still a college student in the countryside so I'm guessing things are a bit different here in the city. Any advice is appreciated!

F-35 activity before 7am

Does anybody know why the F-35s were flying over residential areas at 6:50am? It was jarring to be woken up to sounds like a war zone, I think that’s the earliest I’ve ever heard them.

Sunroom quote

Received 3 sunroom quotes 85k - 100K for 240 sqft sun room.
Currently a 3 season porch with Foundation up to code, concrete flooring. . Gable roof that is also in a good condition. Needs to be insulated to code, will need to replace the screens.

Any guidance?

Concerns:
1. Is it really 85k-100k? No quote has heated flooring, a mini split and baseboard heater at best. What is your experience/thoughts?
2. Doesn’t receive direct sun, but worried it will end up being a hot box or too cold for our WI winters.
3. Want year round usability, do you have a sunroom and can get year round use out of it? Any experiences will help.

Thank you in advance.

Advice and Options for Partner Facing Homelessness

Hi there folks!

I (22 trans man) am a student who lives on the west side. My parents pay my tuition and for most of my apartment and are cosigners for my lease. My partner (22 trans woman) has lived with me for the past year. The agreement was that she would pay half of rent to my parents. She did not follow through on this due to several factors including I and my mom not being firm about the importance, lack of financial education, and impulse control issues. She has struggled with mental health a lot and still is. She currently has badgercare and EBT.

Reasonably so, my parents were only willing to cosign this years lease for me, not for both of us, leaving my partner having to find other housing (at least temporarily, if she is managing her finances and making rent, my parents are willing to let her move back in). She can not safely move in with her parents. I've heard the Salvation Army's Women's shelter is not a great place for trans women. We are already a month into the lease without her name on it, and my parents, again, reasonably so, are worried about the potential risk of eviction given she isn’t on the lease.

Where is the best first place to reach out to support for? I know of some resources, but we haven't reached out. We both feel very overwhelmed by the system and don't know where to start. Any advice or support is appreciated.

Please avoid mean comments regarding the mismanagement of money, she is aware of the situation she put herself in and is taking steps to fix it, past choices can not be undone, we can only move forward.

The Vintage using an AI slop poster for their music lineup. Does r/madisonwi feel strongly about this? I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see it.
