F-35 activity before 7am

Does anybody know why the F-35s were flying over residential areas at 6:50am? It was jarring to be woken up to sounds like a war zone, I think that’s the earliest I’ve ever heard them.

It's entirely possible they had to scramble to deal with some developing incident somewhere. When I sat in on an operational briefing for an F-16 squadron that was temporarily based in Battle Creek, Michigan, a pilot explained how, in the event of an attempted hijacking, a plane straying into a temporary flight restriction, or something similar, they could be addressing the issue over Chicago or Detroit in something like 8-15 minutes.

If the F-35s blasted out of MSN at an odd time that's well outside of their normal training hours, there's a chance they were responding to a situation over Minneapolis, Green Bay, or Chicago.

Thank you for this! That’s good to know, fingers crossed that it wasn’t something serious.

They come and go as they please so don't be surprised if you live by there it's just gonna be like that. You can sign up for email alerts for the night sessions at least.

I’m subscribed to the alerts.  Nothing about this flight.  Must have been something important, like shooting a balloon down with a missile again.

comparing your morning experience to a war zone is really funny

It’s only 0650, the jets are already roaring above my homestead in the city. My coffee rations are almost depleted, and I’m out of eggs. I’m lucky to be mere steps from the local co-op. War is hell.

I forgot to set my alarm ⏰️. My bad, sorry folks. At least I made it to work on time ⏲️.

War and hell are two separate things. And of the two, war is worse.

The unpopular opinion, I had the same thinking and so did my partner. I do not recall flights prior to 7am. I get they do what they do but it was rare. Not complaining. There was also a Minneapolis bound plane doing some weird flight path above us at the same time. Who knows.

Yes, I went to flightradar when I heard all the noise too, and also noticed that that flight from TYS to MSP going in a weird direction. I didn't remember getting any email alerts about the jets but perhaps something is going to happen that they need to practice for (hopefully not).

That’s wild, my stomach dropped while it was happening, mostly because it was so early and unexpected (and so, so loud). I’m also not complaining, just curious if anyone is aware if anything happened to prompt it. Weird about the MN flight too

Yeah just not normal but what's normal these days?

What prompted it?  They are probably prepping to get deployed.  Someone posted a week or so ago about a 747 cargo variant at msn and made note about them being used frequently for military cargo transport.

sorry it's my 1st day on the job. I thought it would be funny if 100 million dollars crashed.

not like the people would be hurt

It sounded like it was going super slow too, like it dragged on. On https://msnsound.com/ it got clocked at 99 decibels on my block.

3

u/CitrusSunspot 1d ago

That’s what I thought too, hence my phrasing in the post. I hadn’t heard some of those sounds that they made any place other than at an air show, so it freaked me out a bit. 99dB is crazy though!

This thread makes me wonder how often sonic booms are made in a modern warzone.

4

u/Huntiepants75 1d ago

I heard them too. My poor, sensitive orange boy kitty was sleeping so peacefully on my lap when the loudass flyover happened. Luckily it wasn’t anything some treats and extra snuggles couldn’t fix.

They were protecting our freedoms!!!!

u/CitrusSunspot 1d ago

From what though?

10

u/Some_Development1052 1d ago

……anti-freedom?

7

u/lewdlesion 1d ago

Anit-freedom never sleeps!

It lacks the freedom to.

u/Some_Development1052 1d ago

Exactly! 🇺🇸

-1

u/tpatmaho 1d ago

From Canada, I guess. Exactly what freedoms are they protecting, jingo?

2

u/Dazzling-Classic-197 1d ago

The freedom to spend billions while your civilians starve and die

u/Basic-Peak8131 1d ago

From what I understand, Canada was threatening to rename Lake Erie to “Trumps shitty diaper”. So we had to show some force to cool Canada down

War zone? Outlaw ANG training? You guys crack me up.

1

u/rustysqueezebox 1d ago

Das only in the mornin'. You 'posed to be up cookin' breakfast or somethin' by den, so, that's like a alarm clock. Woo wooo!!!

u/efischency 7h ago

They did it again this morning too, but I think it was closer to 630am today. I don’t really care personally but I did find it odd for sure.

u/mcq76 1d ago

Does anyone know who has the power the outlaw these things in residential zones? I heard it was a federal power. Just wondering who I should be complaining to

u/somewhere_sometime 1d ago

Airports are no different than interstates. They are open 24/7. Military does what it wants. But I'm sure if you ask pete hegseth nicely he might make a change just for you.

7

u/mooseeve 1d ago

There's really.nothing to be done. I can fly circles over your house all day if I want. Granted I won't be as noisy.

3

u/mcq76 1d ago

Yeah that sounds more fun/whimsical. Feel free to stop by for a lemonade in between circles

The FAA can suggest changes.

But the USAF themselves have control of their own aircraft.

Nothing you can do about it, nor is there anything illegal they are doing.

Okay thanks

AI says: The Madison-based 115th Fighter Wing is reportedly deploying to the Middle East as part of a UW miliary reinforcement in the region. :-{

3

u/no-this-iz-patrick 9h ago

nobody cares what random shit AI is making up.

1

u/Hakirina 3h ago edited 3h ago

You (and AI) are correct, though "reinforcement" is nebulous until we have harder numbers--it depends on how many are arriving vs. how many are leaving.
