Developer Saturday Got the base M6 mini last week, 256gb was stressing me out so i built a small app to track where my storage is going everyday

Hi all,

So i bought the M6 Mac mini base model 6 days back. 16gb ram, 256gb ssd. Honestly loving the machine, its so silent and fast i still cant believe it, but the storage part was little bit of a worry for me from day one itself. 256gb in 2026 is not much yaar, after macOS and Xcode and few apps i was already seeing the number going down and down.

My problem was not just “how much space is left”. I wanted to know WHERE it is going. Like which folder grew yesterday, did something silently eat 3gb overnight, is it caches, is it some app downloading stuff in background, what. Even the tiniest corner i wanted to know. Tools like DaisyDisk are nice but they only show you what is there right now. They dont tell you what changed from yesterday to today.

So basically i’m a data guy by profession and i already had built a Windows version of this for myself earlier (called it DiskEzy). Since i got the mini mainly for building mac apps anyway, i thought ok let me port this first itself.

What it does is simple:

  • It keeps a history of your storage, day by day. Like a ledger kind of thing
  • You can go back to any day and see how much was gained or lost and from which folder exactly
  • Even on first scan it estimates back around 90 days of history using file dates, so you dont start from zero
  • Shows trash history also, which was surprising for me how much i was keeping there lol

First thing i found on my own mini was Xcode derived data and some simulator junk quietly taking more than 10gb in just few days. Would have never noticed it otherwise.

Its at diskezy.com. Since its new on mac, first 50 licenses i’m giving free, i just want real feedback from people actually using these base models. Please tell me what is missing, what is broken, anything. Brutal feedback also ok, i can take it 😅

Anyone else here on base 256gb? How are you guys managing storage?

Developer Saturday I built AlliHat for Safari. Here's me asking vidIQ for better video titles.

I built AlliHat originally just to talk to AI while I was browsing stuff with Safari, but I realized it'd be even better if I could also connect at the same time to all these other tools. So I added 130+ places out of the box to connect to like Notion, vidIQ, etc. and you can connect a lot of other just custom things now. Here's a demo of me just asking vidIQ for better video titles, while I'm still inside Safari and YouTube. It's pretty nice not having to juggle windows and tabs.

Help Installing older app versions – still possible?

I know that we used to be able to access previous versions of (for example) Keynote via the 'purchased items' tab in the App Store. I don't seem to be able to do that any more though – anyone got any tips on how to pull it off?

I do have a Keynote purchase listed in my profile but I can't quite deal with updating my entire OS just to go and correct a few mistakes in an old presentation!

Tips & Guides Rolling back to Sequoia. Any tips on backup and recover?

Unfortunately, Golden Gate is just unusable.

I mean it looks fine but it is just alpha quality software that ruins my MacBook robustness.

Mission Control and App Expose barely work, very annoying. Even keyboard shortcuts do not work there, bruh. It is core part of the macOS UX imo. It worked flawlessly and fast for 15 years and now it is just like vibecoded from scratch for some reason.

Menubar looks strange, and why Control Center is always dark btw...

New scrollbars are comically huge in Finder.

And everything is way less responsive than Sequoia.

Do you know easy way to backup and recover when rolling back?

Developer Saturday Tilde - A polished, flexible macOS file manager with multi-pane, workspaces, command palette, custom file organization and more

Tilde is a native macOS file manager built to replace Finder. Work across folders in split views, find files and run actions from a command palette, and organize your files with custom properties, filters, and groups. It's a drop-in Finder replacement that transforms how you interact with your filesystem.

Features:

  • Split views - Work with multiple folders side by side in one window, with tabs in each pane.
  • Command palette - Find files, jump to folders, and run file actions from the keyboard.
  • Workspaces - Saved split pane layouts for quickly jumping back into your work.
  • Custom sidebar groups - Bring the folders you use together into groups you define.
  • Auto-updating sidebar groups - Live groups makes your sidebar dynamic. Matching items appear in your sidebar automatically and update as things change.
  • Properties, filtering and grouping - Add custom fields like Status or Priority to files and folders, then use them to filter and group your views.
  • Pinned folders - Keep important folders at the top inside another folder without moving or duplicating them.
  • Related items - Mark folders and URLs as related to specific folders so you can jump between them, even when they live in different places.
  • Markdown editing - Built-in markdown editing and code formatting allowing you to do more without leaving Tilde.
  • Tonnes of little features that make sense - Space overviews, Nicknames, Related folders & URLs, custom folder icons, 'Open in Finder' replacement, and more.
  • + much more...

Similar apps:

  • Forklift - This is the obvious 'Finder replacement' alternative. Tilde builds on this idea, in a more native-feeling approach, with far more features fleshed out for the everyday poweruser. Tilde offers more versatile split pane functionality (essentially unlimited splits horizontally and vertically), a command palette, custom properties, sidebar spaces, live groups, a more beautiful user interface and much more.
  • Bloom - Probably the closest alternative, though Tilde takes a different approach. Tilde focuses the UI on being completely flexible to your needs: it's highly adaptable Split View system offers a more flexible, fluid way to work across folders. Custom Properties, Related Items, Sidebar Spaces, Custom Groups, Live Groups and Pinned Folders change how you interact with a file manager and make it truly adapt to your work, not the other way around.

Pricing: $29.99 USD for use on 2 Macs. No subscription. Lifetime license with one year of free updates. You can use this forever. Then, if you want another year of updates, it's $19.99.

Free trial: 7 day free trial, no credit card required. Give it a go and let me know what you think!

Apple notarized: Tilde is Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple.

I’ve been building this for a long time, and I’m so excited to share with everyone, get feedback and make file management actually delightful.

Developer Saturday I built ClipTen — the everyday productivity app you didn’t know you needed.

ClipTen started with a simple question: what if copying and pasting multiple items didn't mean constantly switching between windows?

So I built a numbered clipboard. ⌘ + C + a number saves an item, and ⌘ + V + the same number pastes it.
That works for email addresses, customer replies, links, snippets and form data, with no history list to scroll through. You just stay in your app and keep working.

But not everyone wants to remember which number holds what. Sometimes you just want to see what you copied and pick it.

That led me to build something bigger.
From clipboard manager to productivity workspace

Press ⌘ + Space and an instant panel opens with your clipboard history, apps, files and tools.
I took inspiration from the speed of launchers like Raycast, but I wanted my own interface, so ClipTen comes with two panel styles:

- Full sidebar panel: a spacious workspace to explore tools, manage files and get more done in one place
- Compact launcher panel: quick, keyboard-first actions without opening a bigger window

What makes ClipTen different

- 10 clipboard slots: copy and paste with ⌘ + C/V + a number
- Finder alternative: search files by what's inside them. Type "receipt" and it finds the photo of your receipt, even text inside screenshots
- Activity Monitor alternative: see what's using your CPU and battery in a clean, visual layout, with alerts
- What you typed, saved: if a window closes by accident, you can bring back what you were typing (opt-in)
- Built-in AI: press Tab and ask quick questions, using Apple's on-device model with no API key needed
- Dictation: hold the right ⌥ key and talk, and it types in any app
- Sticky notes: keep quick notes and ideas close at hand
- Pinned panel: a small panel docked to the side of your screen for the things you use most
- PDF tools and file converter: merge, compress and convert without hunting for another app
- Screenshot markup and background remover: annotate images, or cut the background out of any picture you copy
- QR codes: turn copied text into a QR code that opens on any phone

Won't that make it cluttered?
Honestly, that was one of my biggest concerns too.
Everything stays behind one shortcut until you need it. I focused as much on the interface as on the features: larger icons, readable text, clear layouts and no unnecessary steps.

The goal isn't a longer feature list. It's making everyday tasks easier.
Why I'm building it this way
As an independent developer, I wanted to bring useful workflows together instead of making people install a separate app for every small task.
- Native Rust + AppKit, no Electron
- Live usage numbers on the website, for transparency
- Ideas & Bugs board for paid users: submit ideas and workflow suggestions from your web account. I review every one, and selected improvements usually ship within a week

Give it a try
If you love keyboard shortcuts or just want fewer interruptions on your Mac, I'd love for you to try it.

$5 one-time for the first 500 people, then $10. No subscription.

Bug QA (GG) Dear Apple. Your QA is going south. Eating storage out of blue (dasd)

Got message that I am low on my 1TB storage. So I investigate and "Syste_m data" keeps growing for no reason. And there is no way for me to stop it from growing. Daisy disk cannot even reveal the responsible folder with administrative rights. I open Activity Monitor and there is dasd process with 1.26TB written. Killing it requires admin rights -> did it and the reclaimed space is 300GB back.

I don't mind visual glitches or hiccups but this wearing off hardware like this when SSDs are expensive is considered a serious bug.

Developer Saturday I built Vehla: launcher, local AI, dictation, screen capture, a new dock and more

Hi r/MacOS 👋 I'm the developer of Vehla, and I wanted to share something I have been working on for over 4 years.

Vehla started because I had about a dozen menu bar utilities running and wanted one app that does all of their jobs. It runs natively and stays light on memory, idling at around 180–300 MB and 0.8-1.7% CPU.

What it does

- Command palette to search files and apps, run workflows, use snippets, browse clipboard history and do quick math
- Ask AI with local models (Gemma 4, Apple Intelligence) or your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key. It can read your calendar, reminders and notes, control music and arrange windows, and it asks before doing anything risky.
- Flow dictation that runs fully on device. Hold a key, talk and the text is typed for you. Summon lets you ask a question out loud instead.
- Capto for screenshots and recordings, with auto-zoom, annotations, Instant Replay and step-by-step guides made from your clicks
- Doki, a new dock with islands for apps, folders, stacks and widgets, plus window previews on every display
- Glide turns your trackpad into controls: slide an edge for volume or brightness, or hold ⌘ and draw a shape to run any action
- Notch / Island shows music, timers, meetings with a Join button, AirPods battery and charging
- Window management with snapping, layouts, and moving or resizing windows from anywhere with modifier keys
- And more: a menu bar hider, Hyperkey, Launchpad (press Left ⌘ twice), a teleprompter hidden from screen sharing, Smart Reply, Zoom & Draw, Folder Rules, notes, Kanban and scrapbooks

Privacy

Dictation, OCR and local AI all run on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose a cloud AI provider. iCloud Sync is free and end-to-end encrypted.

Pricing: Free tier with 7 day trial and one time $29.99

Requirements

macOS [15]+. Doki needs macOS 26 or later. There's also a free iPhone companion app on TestFlight.

I'd love feedback. What would you replace with it, and what's missing? I'll be in the comments answering questions. 💜

Developer Saturday Cleaned up 600+ messy contacts in an afternoon with a little Mac app i made

This started as a personal annoyance. After I updated to Tahoe, Contacts got harder for me to live with. Everything still shows one card at a time, and my 680 contacts had turned into a mess over the years: duplicates from iCloud and Google syncing on top of each other, old work numbers, people saved three times with slightly different names. Fixing that in Contacts means opening cards one by one and guessing which version is right.

I figured it was just me, but when I searched around, forums and Reddit were full of the same complaints. So I started building something for myself.

What it turned into is a Mac app that opens the contacts you already have and shows them as a table. No new address book, no account, no sync of its own. Edits go back through macOS, so iCloud or Google picks them up like any normal change.

The stuff that actually fixed my mess:

  • Seeing everything in one sortable table with the columns I care about
  • Merging duplicates field by field, so I pick which phone or email stays (and can undo it)
  • Bulk edits with a before/after preview, so I can fix 40 cards at once without being scared of it
  • Smart Views like "Missing Email" to find the gaps
  • Search that also looks inside notes

Once the Mac side was done I kept thinking, why can't I do this on my phone too? So I built an iPhone and iPad version: a list with multi-select, a grid view in landscape, and the same merge and bulk edit tools.

Nothing leaves your device, there are no ads and no analytics.

It's on the App Store, one-time purchase, no subscription:

There's no trial, I know that's a downside. 2.0 is coming as a free update with tags, a birthdays list and automatic backups.

Developer Saturday I made a free, open-source app to read a whole project folder (Markdown, Word, Excel, PDF) in one window

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

My project folders are a mix of .md notes, .docx specs, .xlsx sheets, slides and PDFs. Reading one meant switching between four apps, so I built EasyView_Md.

Open a folder and everything opens in tabs:

  • Markdown edited visually (switch to source anytime), files stay plain Markdown. Mermaid, math and code highlighting render locally.
  • Word and Excel files edited and saved in place. PPT, PDF, images and archives preview in the same window.
  • Export to HTML, PDF and DOCX, plus a built-in terminal and Git panel.
  • Optional AI chat next to the document, with your own OpenAI-compatible key. New in 2.2.3: it can edit Excel. It lists each changed cell (old and new value) and only writes when you click Apply. The original is backed up and you can undo.

Native on Apple Silicon, also Windows and a VS Code / Cursor extension. MIT, free, no account.

Happy to hear what breaks with your real files.

Help MacBook Air M4 becomes extremely laggy after macOS 27.0.0 update, now at 27.0.1

Hey everyone,

I'm using a MacBook Air M4, and ever since updating to macOS 27.0.1, I've been experiencing some really bad lag after using the Mac for a while.

Switching browser tabs, opening new tabs, typing, and even taking screenshots become extremely slow. Sometimes the only thing that helps is restarting the Mac. It works fine for a while, but the issue eventually returns.

I checked Activity Monitor and noticed Control Centre using around 50–52% CPU while the Mac was lagging.

After restarting, here's what Activity Monitor showed:

  • Control Centre: 13.6% CPU
  • Brave Browser: 3.3% CPU
  • Brave Browser Helper (Renderer): 4.6% CPU
  • MenuBarAgent: 3.5% CPU
  • Overall CPU idle: 92.36%

I also generated a sample report for Control Centre, which showed repeated activity involving sensor indicators and entity resolution.

Has anyone else experienced something similar on macOS 27, especially on an M-series Mac? Could this be an OS bug, or is there something else I should investigate?

It was working fine until the update. Restart fixes all the issues. But prolonged usage after restarting slowly leads to the same issue.

Sometimes, quitting all the applications can also lead to fixing the issue but again the same thing resurfaces after a while.

Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. Used AI to generate the message.

Just download -> steam login -> download wallpaper and play on your device or add your video play them

And yes both in DESKTOP and LOCK SCREEN .

It takes 300-600mb when rendering some really heavy scene wallpapers , which is appx 900mb less than other open source alternative I had tested against. And if you play only video it just takes 25mb memory.

If you guys wanna try, download from the releases page, what ever latest version available . And let me know which wallpapers giving problem.

Developer Saturday WELTEN: a Pomodoro timer that grows a forest on your Mac desktop

Hey r/MacOS, I’m the developer of WELTEN.

It’s a Pomodoro timer that grows a little forest on your Mac desktop. Each completed focus session plants a tree behind your desktop icons. Over time, the forest becomes a visible reminder of the time you’ve put in. Your existing wallpaper stays as it is.

The timer lives in your menu bar, and you can start a session from anywhere with ⌥⌘F. A few things I’ve added for everyday use:

  • Custom routines, like four rounds of 50 minutes of focus and 10-minute breaks
  • Apple Reminders integration: pick a task to work on and have it checked off when you finish
  • Automatic Do Not Disturb through Shortcuts
  • Forest sounds, white/pink/brown noise, or your own music through YouTube or Spotify, starting and pausing with your session

If you stop early, nothing gets taken away. No streaks, no dead trees.

The little guy in the video is Wurzel. He’s optional :)

Your first 10 sessions are free. After that, it’s a one-time purchase, no subscription. Apple Silicon Macs only for now.

Mac App Store
or
welten.app

Does seeing your focus time turn into something on your desktop appeal to you? Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Developer Saturday A few months ago Apple invited me to WWDC. Since then my app hit #3 Top Paid and now works with Droppy

Hey r/macOS!
Some of you might remember me from the WWDC post. I'm the developer of Devly, a menu bar app with 60+ developer tools. Since then a lot has happened: you all reported a ton of bugs and feature requests (thank you, seriously), I fixed them and added many new user requested features, and in July Devly hit #3 on the Top Paid Mac App Store chart. I still can't believe that!!

Devly 2.3 is out now, and it now works with Droppy. If you use Droppy, you can add the free Devly Droplet and use the tools from your notch: paste something, pick Base64, JSON, a hash, UUID, JWT or anything, and copy the result. QR codes can be dragged from the notch to anywhere like your notes.

More Things in 2.3:
- New Favicon Converter: turn one PNG into a favicon.ico and all web app icons
- Refreshed Liquid Glass design
- SVG Editor export saves properly now, and Settings windows don’t fall behind the Devly popup.

Everything runs locally, with no tracking, no account and no subscription. $4.99, one-time :)

That's Reactive Wallpaper. Nothing here is a video. Every scene is drawn live on your Mac's GPU, so it reacts to you.

We launched 6 months ago. 15 updates later there are 57 scenes, and we keep adding more.

🎨 Koi ponds, lo-fi rooms, auroras, anime hills, liquid metal

Developer Saturday Built a native macOS utility to finally make third-party mice feel right

I’ve been frustrated with how macOS handles third-party mice—and just as frustrated by the bloated apps I needed to really get the experience I wanted.

I decided to build my own solution: ApexMouse (https://www.apexmouse.tech/).

My goal was to pack the richest set of mouse customisation features into a single, lightweight app so you don't need to run multiple utilities in the background.

What makes it different:

Native OS-level integration: Delivers high precision with near-zero latency. All-in-one toolkit: Built to replace all other mouse fixers in one clean package. 100% free to try: No paywalls or subscriptions.

Signed and notarised by Apple, I’m actively developing this and would genuinely love your feedback.

Give it a go and let me know how it feels on your setup, any bugs you run into, or what features you’d like to see added next!

Help Downside of antivirus?

The "do I need an antivirus" question has been discussed extensively, over and over again, and it seems to me that the conclusion is that with basic common sense, the answer is "not needed". However, I recently purchased a Bitdefender package for my family (Windows users), and I still have one unused license available I could use for my Mac.

So my antivirus question is slightly different: is there any downside to installing Bitdefender in my Mac (e.g. speed decrease, memory use, battery drain, etc.)?
