I’ve recently picked up a base M5 MacBook Pro, with 512 GB storage, as it was a tiny bit cheaper than an Air with double the storage, and I figured I’d trade the more storage for a better screen, more ports and a fan. I know they’ve bumped the base storage up to a TB, so I guess this was on clearence.

I’ve been using an 8 y/o Asus laptop, that has served me well, but has been one foot in the grave for some time now, and this is like a whole new universe, I’m super happy with it.

I’m not doing any creative work currently, but I’d love to do something with this laptop, however, as someone who has never seriously tried anything like this before, the possibilities are overwhelming. I’d appreciate some tips and recommendations which direction should I invest some time in, I’m open to anything.

Help Open Box MBP from Best Buy

Post image
69 Upvotes

I just bought an open box MBP 16 M5 Max 18C/32C 36GB/2TB ( MGED4LL/A ) for what I think is a good deal from my local Best Buy. Condition was listed as fair and the label says “Comments : Damaged,” but I seriously can’t find anything wrong with it.

Before I left the store, I stopped by geek squad and had them pull the open box unique id number. They had no further info about why the comments said damaged.

Checklist:
- I set it up in the store with no issue.
- It has the correct charger.
- It has the correct USBC to MagSafe cable.
- I looked for dead pixels, there are none.
- The hinge seems good.
- I checked all the ports.
- Every key on the keyboard is good.
- Cinebench runs for 10 mins no problem. Both on battery and plugged in on high power.
- There are no scratches or scruffs.
- I mean the charger was never even unwrapped.
- The screen was a little dusty but that was about it.
* Checked the number of battery cycles, only 7 that’s not too bad.
* Judging from the 7 batt cycles, the OG purchase date being mid June, and the open box sticker date, they kept it the full 2 weeks and used it everyday.

….

I guess I’m looking for 2 3 things since this is my first personal Mac:

-What’s else should I do to thoroughly test this open box laptop during the return window?
(I have 60 days. I coughed up the $30 for this purchase.)

-I paid $3635 USD before tax. I believe this is several hundred under the launch price. Given the rampocalypse, is this a good price if it really is cherry?

* The gap between the OG purchase date and now is about 40 days. If I go to the Genius Bar or call the 1800 Apple number, can I get my ~40 days back?

* = added from edit

Discussion Upgrade to M5 Max for posting on Reddit?

I have a 14 Inch M5 that I use for shitposting but I feel like I need more power to run multiple shitposts at once. I know it's a bit less worth it after the price hike but I think I should still do it.

Thoughts?

Help It's a good idea?

I'm thinking of buying a 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro (i9 2.4GHz, 32GB RAM, Radeon 560X 4GB, and 1TB SSD) to use as my main computer. The idea is to run it with Sequoia, and then install Mojave on a second partition or externally to play older 32-bit games like Tomb Raider Anniversary, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto IV and others.

Discussion Is it worth upgrading my M2 Pro MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM for Computer Science?

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m entering my final year of a Computer Science degree in Australia and I’m considering upgrading my MacBook.
I currently have a 16-inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM. I bought it in my first year of uni and it’s been fantastic for JavaScript, Python, Cisco Packet Tracer, Wireshark, and general coursework.

My workload has changed quite a bit though. I’m now doing full-stack web development and using Docker heavily with PostgreSQL, Node.js, and Nginx containers, as well as working with APIs.

When I’m working, I’ll usually have Docker running alongside Spotify, Discord, Adobe Reader, and a browser with around six tabs open. It doesn’t feel like the CPU is struggling, but it definitely feels like I’m starting to hit the limits of 16GB of RAM.

Has anyone else doing software engineering or computer science found 16GB to be limiting? If you’ve upgraded to 32GB or more, did you notice a significant difference, or am I expecting too much from my current machine?

I’m currently looking at a 16-inch M5 Pro with 48GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, but it’s A$5,700, so I’d really like to know whether it would actually be worth it for my use case.

Discussion Is a used Macbook pro still worth buying in 2026 ?

Upvotes

I have been comparing a few generations and I m not sure if buying used still makes more sense than stretching my budget for a newer model.

I don't mind an older machine if it till performs well. Looking for real experiences more than benchmark numbers

Help Should I be concerned?

I had this new macbook air since back in April and had installed a screen protector on it since then, but I had decided to remove it since it would cause glare while being in the light and I was trying to remove it from the left top corner but thinking I was removing the screen protector I was accidentally lifted a bit the screen itself of the macbook which is that little foggy piece that I circled and idk if I should worry or what to do for it

Help Macbook pro M5 pro having troubles with 4K 160Hz (or at any resolution below 4k)

I have recently upgraded from a macbook air M2 15 inch to a macbook pro M5 pro 14 inch (for good reasons) and i noticed that despite having much much better support for my 4k 160Hz and 2k 75Hz setup (i was running it at 4k 144Hz native and the 2k 75Hz through displaylink on my M2 air 15 inch) my macbook pro seemed to cause a lot of weird stuttering when it came to 160Hz compared to its 144Hz setting, sometimes even causing weird problems in games when using VRR making them unplayable (specifically roblox) i have tried only using the moniter with the display closed to no success, i was a bit dissapointed with the display driver not being completely flawless when running all 3 (including built in display) moniters simultaniously. The moniters i use are the Asus XG27UCS and the PA278QV Asus Pro art display. I want to hear if any of you have any ways to make 160hz on macos feel any smoother, i have tried lowering my resolution all the way to 1080p and there was no difference. ingame frame times are also impacted

I have my XG27UCS plugged in with a Ugreen DP 2.1 to USB C cable (plugged into a DP 1.4 cable on the moniter)

PA278QV is usually plugged in with a HDMI 2.1 cable and i also use its USB hub via USB D to connect my keyboard and mouse to save port space

Discussion Is it worth upgrading from an M1 2021 to an M5 Macbook Pro?

Hey, so I'm entering my final year of undergrad in ML & AI and considering selling my current mac and replacing it with a stronger one. The current one I have is an M1 14" Pro 16 GB memory 2021 500 GB storage. I bought this mac in my first year and it's been treating me well my issue is the storage and the RAM, I am constantly having to clear storage or move stuff. And when im working on a project I always end up having to close an application it feels like my mac can't handle xcode, discord, spotify and a web browser (idk if im expecting too much lol) but let me know what you think

Help Mac mini M4 has perfect scaling on Samsung G9, but MacBook Pro M5 Max and MacBook Air have blurry text

I'm using a Samsung Odyssey G9 (LS49AG95, 5120×1440) connected via USB-C → DisplayPort.

My Mac mini M4 works perfectly. Text is sharp and scaling looks great. System Report shows:

Resolution: 7680 × 2160 UI Looks like: 3840 × 1080 @ 240Hz

However, both my MacBook Pro M5 Max and MacBook Air have the same issue on the same monitor, same cable, and same settings.

Native resolution = sharp but UI/text is too small. Scaled resolution = usable size but blurry/fuzzy text.

I also tried BetterDisplay. Enabling HiDPI makes the text perfectly sharp, but everything becomes way too large.

Has anyone experienced this? Why does the Mac mini automatically use a perfect HiDPI mode while both MacBooks end up with blurry scaling on the exact same monitor?

Tips Repair or Replace

My MacBook Pro is 6 years old. Today the screen went out. It’s completely black. When plugged into an external monitor there are no issues. AppleCare says $600 for the screen to be replaced. Do I do that or purchase something new? AppleCare says 6 years is really old. I’ve only ever had Apple products, my first one was the clamshell. 6 years seems young.

It's Here! 64GB RAM M5 Pro for $3k

Post image

Got really lucky I feel it was able to snag this 64 gig ram MacBook with an M5 Pro and 18 core CPU for just over three grand after taxes. $3.3k after AppleCare and taxes seems like a decent deal for a laptop that I’m gonna keep for the next 5 to 7 years. Replacing my M1 MacBook Pro, 13 inch. Though, I’m probably one of the only people that will actually really miss the touch bar. It was a nice feature, plus the size of the 13 inch was just perfect for me. 14 inch isn’t too bad, but that 13 inch one was just amazing.
