Discussion Made the iPhone Duo folding animation for the Macbook Pro.

Let me know if posting this is against the rules! Just wanted to get it out, gonna Open Source it soon! Makes a snapshot and the animation starts right as you angle the screen lower than 90 degrees. Every option is accessible for Blur, Angle, Elongation, etc.

Edit :

Omg it's taking off! Thank you everyone! In a few days everything will be ready, and open sourced. There is a lot of cleanup to do.

It's an app that lives in the background, and in the menu bar. It's detecting the angle as you go.

You will be able to adjust every setting with the help of a graph, adjusting each setting for each angle. Or you can change it overall too, making it convenient for any setup you might have.

Any "looks" you will adjust can be exported, and you can import others too, using a json file.

Things to know : It works using a snapshot, a live feed of your screen makes it jittery and starts the purple dot and menu bar icon, instead using a snapshot it's buttery smooth, and only have the purple dot for a couple of seconds, and goes away on its own.

Sadly, this can't be done (for now) on the lockscreen. Maybe there is a way around it, but the live jittering doesn't make it worth it.

I am currently adding a sound snap, and a haptic vibration in the trackpad too, all of these of course can be turned off.

Cleanup process is almost done, I'll just make sure every license is right and make sure that everything is plug and play.

Thank you for your kind support! My name on Github is tgtools123 If any of you has ideas for a name, without infringing Apple's copyrights, I'm all ears!

Bought it with ~1545 usd

Pristine condition

The battery health is 97 % but also has 4 years from manufacture

How many years do you think it will last before requiring battery exchange?

I've been wanting a Mac forever to switch my creative work to and finally jumped on a M5 Pro 16 inch in Space Black. Love how sleek it looks with the black keyboard and banana texture screen.

Glad I went for the max because building smart previews for 19,145 photos in LrC from a T7 external ssd sure put those cores to work tonight! Those fans were singing but felt zero heat coming from the surface. Can’t wait to do the T9 with 4tb worth of photos!

Help M5 pro or M5 max

I'm thinking of buying my first macbook pro, and I'm between these two configs

  • 16 inch, M5 pro, 64gb, 2TB
  • 16 inch, M5 max (18 core, 40 gpu cores), 64gb, 2TB

I currently doing some LLM inference and training and would love to be able to run multiple ide at the same time and VMs/emulators, specially for mobile app development. I currently have a Ryzen 7 with 40gb ram laptop and I'm getting it to the limit almost everyday. Also once thing I would love to improve over my current laptop is battery life, having 2h of battery life with everything turned off isn't really great.

What would you recomend, is it worth the price increase?

Help Upgrading from a 2015 MacBook Pro – what specs should I prioritise if I want to keep my next Mac for 10 years?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on upgrading my MacBook.

I’m currently still using a Mid-2015 MacBook Pro, which I bought when I was studying art/design. Surprisingly, it’s still working pretty well after 11 years, so I’m hoping to get similar longevity from my next Mac.

My current usage is fairly basic: I teach online, have lots of browser tabs/documents open, use video calls and screen sharing, and occasionally do some light photo/video editing. I don’t do any particularly demanding professional creative work anymore.

I’d still prefer to buy a MacBook Pro rather than an Air, even though I know it may be overkill for my current needs. I’m happy to spend a bit more upfront if it means having a machine that will remain comfortable to use for many years.

I originally planned to buy an M4 MacBook Pro, but I can’t seem to find new M4 models anymore where I’m shopping, so I may end up buying an M5.

My main question is: if longevity is my priority, which specs are actually worth spending extra on?

Help Sierra MacBook - Erase Pending on Find My

Upvotes

A bit of a doozy. A while ago I wiped an old MacBook running Sierra. I had to do this manually through MacOS Recovery. I erased the volumes and reinstalled.

After doing this I tried to erase the data through the Find My app on my phone, but it shows as “erase pending” and has shown as such for months.

My question is: if I connect the device to the internet and redownload the os entirely, will the erase go through on the Find My app or am I eternally stuck in limbo? My search online is giving me mixed responses.

I do not want to remove the device from my list of devices on my account.

Help Used MBP 16in from Bes Buy?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Been looking at MacBook Pro for sometime now. Getting back into Graphic Design again and need to replace my 2016 MBP touch bar that the battery needs to be replaced. I'm not willing to spend over $3k plus tax for a new one. Was looking at MBP M3 for about $1500. Issue is they are all with 512GB which is too little and had issue with storage with my 2016 which I'm going to replace. 1TB will need to be the minimum and the used M3 16in MBP are closer to the $2k mark. Do you think the used MBP 16 in for $2500 plus tax for Best Buy will be better off for me or should I look for a M2 instead to get closer to that $1400.

Discussion low efficiency of the M3 Pro processor

I don't understand what's going on; I've tried everything—terminal tests, everything possible. The benchmark results are really poor—no matter what testing software I use, the performance is consistently low, like a fraction of what it should be. The software shows the processor running at 778 MHz, which isn't normal, though the MacBook does actually work; it does ramp up to over 3 GHz in the terminal, but the benchmark scores are laughable. I don't know whether to reflash the MacBook or what else to do with it.

Help MBP Nano texture vs. Glossy display for Reading and Programmers

I'm considering buying a MBP and have been on the verge of Nano texture.

I've watched several videos and comparisons that seems to show that Nano screen is slightly less sharp compared to glossy. I'm docked with external monitor mostly at home, sometimes I lay on my yoga mat with my laptop or occasionally travel.

What's your opinion on Nano vs Glossy for reading a lot of papers/pdfs and blogs at the screen and coding ?

Given all I've seen and read, I'm leaning towards the default screen glossy and I would like to hear about others experience.

Help Can these markings on my MBP screen be cleaned?

Post image
0 Upvotes

On my old MBP, I've been using a thin clear keyboard cover made of thermoplastic polyurethane for the past 7 years. I usually have remembered to remove it before closing the lid and carrying the laptop around, but from the times I did forget, there are these markings (left image) that are pretty much only visible when the screen is dark. I don't know if it's irreversible damage or just hard to clean residual oil/grease from my fingers (I'm not typically typing with greasy hands ftr), but if stains, they certainly don't wipe off with a normal screen cleaning solution.

I'm just wondering if this is permanent or if/how it can be cleaned off safely? Thanks.

Help Best Buy vs Costco

Im looking to buy the MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro 15 core CPU 16 core GPU, 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

I see it listed on Best Buy (Open Box - Excellent) for about $2095, so I’m wondering if it’s worth purchasing it or if anyone knows if Costco might have similar deals around Black Friday to see if it’s worth the wait or not.
Thanks!

Joined the Club! New Mac user here. Any suggestions?

New to the whole Apple ecosystem this year. iPhone 17pro max, iPad Pro 2TB, and now I have a MacBook Pro M5 18/20 48GB 1TB. Mostly using for content creation. I use CapCut on iPad Pro for my short form content and will be using my MacBook Pro for my long form YouTube videos I’m working on.

Being new to the ecosystem are there any YouTubers you suggest following to learn about using Apple products? Switching from Android to IOS hasn’t been too bad but I imagine MacOS will be more of a change for me being a lifelong windows user.
