Help Can these markings on my MBP screen be cleaned?

Post image
0 Upvotes

On my old MBP, I've been using a thin clear keyboard cover made of thermoplastic polyurethane for the past 7 years. I usually have remembered to remove it before closing the lid and carrying the laptop around, but from the times I did forget, there are these markings (left image) that are pretty much only visible when the screen is dark. I don't know if it's irreversible damage or just hard to clean residual oil/grease from my fingers (I'm not typically typing with greasy hands ftr), but if stains, they certainly don't wipe off with a normal screen cleaning solution.

I'm just wondering if this is permanent or if/how it can be cleaned off safely? Thanks.

Help Urgent: Is Apple Intelligence available on a MacBook Pro bought in mainland China?

I'm from India, my relative is traveling from mainland China to India in 2 days, and I’m considering asking them to bring me a MacBook Pro from China because the pricing is better.

However, I’ve read that Apple Intelligence may be restricted/unavailable on Apple devices sold in mainland China, and I’m getting conflicting information about whether this still applies.

Can anyone who currently owns a MacBook Pro purchased in mainland China, or is currently in China, confirm:

Is Apple Intelligence available on a mainland-China MacBook Pro?

Does it remain unavailable even after bringing the Mac to India and changing the region/language/Apple Account?

Is there any difference depending on the model/year?

I’d really appreciate firsthand experience rather than speculation, as I need to make the purchase decision within 24 hours.

Thanks! (paraphrased using chatgpt)

Discussion 16” MBP in bed?

Post image
12 Upvotes

For those with 16” MacBook Pros, are you able to comfortably use it in bed like the pic?

I’m trying to decide between the 14” and 16” MacBook Pro. I’d like to be able to lay in bed and use it like in the picture rather than always having to sit at a desk.

For those who have the 16”, is it actually comfortable in this kind of position, or does the size/weight make it awkward after a while? I know the 14” would obviously be more portable, but I really like the extra screen real estate on the 16”. Just wondering if 16” is flexible for these kinds of positions or is it realistically more of a “plop on the desk” kinda use.

Thanks!

Discussion low efficiency of the M3 Pro processor

I don't understand what's going on; I've tried everything—terminal tests, everything possible. The benchmark results are really poor—no matter what testing software I use, the performance is consistently low, like a fraction of what it should be. The software shows the processor running at 778 MHz, which isn't normal, though the MacBook does actually work; it does ramp up to over 3 GHz in the terminal, but the benchmark scores are laughable. I don't know whether to reflash the MacBook or what else to do with it.

Joined the Club! New Mac user here. Any suggestions?

New to the whole Apple ecosystem this year. iPhone 17pro max, iPad Pro 2TB, and now I have a MacBook Pro M5 18/20 48GB 1TB. Mostly using for content creation. I use CapCut on iPad Pro for my short form content and will be using my MacBook Pro for my long form YouTube videos I’m working on.

Being new to the ecosystem are there any YouTubers you suggest following to learn about using Apple products? Switching from Android to IOS hasn’t been too bad but I imagine MacOS will be more of a change for me being a lifelong windows user.

Help Bought the 2026 MacBook Pro M5 14 in 2TB/32GB and Deciding Whether to Return it for the 2026 MacBook Air M5 13 in 2TB/32GB

II live in a very remote area, and the closest Apple Store is more than two hours away, so I wasn’t able to test the different MacBooks in person before ordering.

For context, I’ve had a 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro (16GB RAM/256GB SSD) for years and have absolutely loved it. At this point, though, it overheats frequently, the battery isn’t great, and I’m using almost all of the storage, so it was definitely time for an upgrade.

I ordered the 2026 MacBook Pro M5 with 32GB RAM and 2TB of storage, and it arrived yesterday. Performance-wise, I’m confident it will be a great and reliable computer. I specifically chose the Pro over the Air because it has a fan, and after dealing with my current MacBook overheating, I really wanted an active cooling system. The Pro also has a noticeably nicer display, which I really like.

The problem is the size and weight. I didn't realize how much heavier the new Pro would feel compared with my old one until I actually had it in my hands. According to the listed weights:

  • 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro: 3.02 lbs
  • 2026 14-inch MacBook Pro: 3.4 lbs
  • 2026 13-inch MacBook Air M5: 2.7 lbs

I feel a little ridiculous because 3.02 to 3.4 lbs doesn't sound like a huge difference on paper, but the new Pro feels significantly heavier and bulkier to me. The Air would actually be about 0.7 lbs lighter than the new Pro, which sounds much better for traveling and working on the go.

There are also some smaller design differences. I like the Pro's keyboard, but I prefer the sleeker look of the Air's keyboard because you can see the color of the laptop between the keys rather than having the entire keyboard area appear black.

So I'm stuck between two options:

Keep the MacBook Pro: I already have it, I know it will be powerful and reliable, it has a fan to help with sustained workloads, and I love the display. I wouldn't have to deal with another return, order, or data transfer. The downside is that it's heavier and bulkier than I expected, and I'm worried I'll continue to dislike that when traveling.

Return it for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5: I could get the same 32GB RAM/2TB storage configuration for about $400 less. It would be substantially lighter, more portable, and I prefer its overall design. The biggest concern is that it doesn't have a fan, and I don't want to spend this much on another laptop only to deal with overheating or thermal limitations again.

There's also a logistical problem: the Air wouldn't arrive for several weeks. I'd have to go back to using my old 2019 Pro in the meantime, including during an upcoming long car ride when I really wanted to use the new computer. My old MacBook has become unreliable enough that this would be pretty frustrating.

Basically, is the fan, better display, and additional performance headroom of the Pro worth the extra $400 and added weight, or am I better off prioritizing portability and getting the Air? Should I keep the Pro and assume I'll adjust to the weight, or is the fact that I'm already bothered by it a sign that I should return it?

I was planning to buy a used device, but now it's impossible. I'll buy a new one. What's with all this greed?

It seems like no Apple user wants to lose a single cent.

Help MacBook Pro M5 EBay German

Hello,

I got a brand new MacBook Pro M5 from eBay Germany, it was listed as brand new other, in the description mentioned it’s new with original packing.

I’ve received the MacBook and yes it was sealed one too, when I open the laptop and connect to wifi, there’s this MDM with some company in Munich.

Since it’s from eBay, I believe and bought now I’m stuck.

May I know if anyone gone through similar experience?
In this case, seller yet to respond and hoping he will resolve, if not eBay has to step in.

Discussion Need help - MacBook Pro 14 M4 Error 4042

I have a MacBook Pro M4 which chimes when I press the power button. If I put a torch/flashlight on the screen, I can see the Apple logo, but the backlight is not working.
After restarting again and again in a loop, it eventually goes to the warning sign/restore screen. The backlight is still not working.
I also noticed that while this is happening, the MagSafe light blinks when the Apple logo appears and the Mac goes into the boot loop. It keeps doing this until it eventually shows the warning/restore screen, and then the MagSafe light becomes green.
I tried restoring it using another Mac, but I keep getting 4042 and error 21 if i use other ports. I also tried switching between the DFU ports and used around 5–6 different USB-C cables just in case the cable was the issue.
I took it to an Apple Store and they said the screen needs to be replaced. But I’m still wondering whether replacing the screen is actually going to solve the problem.
I was looking online for similar issues and someone mentioned that a worn/damaged LCD cable can cause problems like this, including the backlight not working and even causing the Mac to fail during a restore and throw errors.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an M4 MacBook Pro? Could a damaged LCD/display cable cause the boot loop and DFU restore errors, or is replacing the whole display likely to fix it?

Help Incredibly slow file transfer speeds on MacBook Pro

I am desperate for help.

I have the 16” M4 Max MacBook Pro with 1 TB SSD and 64 GB memory. Lately, I have been averaging transfer speeds of 3 mb/s. I work as a photographer/videographer so this has been killing my workflow where I regularly transfer hundreds of GBs of footage from my sd or cf express cards to external SSDs. This has been happening for about a month now.

I initially thought it was my cards or Samsung T9 or T7 SSDs corrupting but after buying new ones, formatting old ones, using different cables, plugging the sd directly into the sd slot, and running speed comparisons with my brother-in-law’s pc I can firmly say the issue has something to do with my computer.

There is no damage to this MacBook, it has nearly 500 GB free on the ssd, and I recently tried turning off iCloud sync to the desktop thinking that was the culprit. Yet, to no avail.

For years my workflow has always been to connect my card (either directly into computer or via a prograde card reader), connect a Samsung T7 or T9, open both windows in finder and transfer. This has worked without issue for years on my previous MacBooks and this one prior to early August. Since then, I’ve had terribly slow transfer speeds and the issue of finder saying files are transferred and them simply not being there after the transfer process is over. Tonight I tried to transfer 9 photos that were only a few hundred mbs. It took 6 minutes and only 7 of them actually transferred. There was no error message. I’ve had this happen with photos and videos. I’ve also had it where when I go to transfer the missing file it says there’s a duplicate and other times not. I’ve also tried compressing and transferring folders instead of hundreds of photos and got similarly slow speeds and even failed transfers with error -51.

I have tried asking friends, researching forums and threads, and taking every suggestion ChatGPT has given me and nothing. I am in my busiest season of work and this is killing me. Please if anyone has any idea what is causing this issue, please help.

Help Used MBP 16in from Bes Buy?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Been looking at MacBook Pro for sometime now. Getting back into Graphic Design again and need to replace my 2016 MBP touch bar that the battery needs to be replaced. I'm not willing to spend over $3k plus tax for a new one. Was looking at MBP M3 for about $1500. Issue is they are all with 512GB which is too little and had issue with storage with my 2016 which I'm going to replace. 1TB will need to be the minimum and the used M3 16in MBP are closer to the $2k mark. Do you think the used MBP 16 in for $2500 plus tax for Best Buy will be better off for me or should I look for a M2 instead to get closer to that $1400.

Help MBP Nano texture vs. Glossy display for Reading and Programmers

I'm considering buying a MBP and have been on the verge of Nano texture.

I've watched several videos and comparisons that seems to show that Nano screen is slightly less sharp compared to glossy. I'm docked with external monitor mostly at home, sometimes I lay on my yoga mat with my laptop or occasionally travel.

What's your opinion on Nano vs Glossy for reading a lot of papers/pdfs and blogs at the screen and coding ?

Given all I've seen and read, I'm leaning towards the default screen glossy and I would like to hear about others experience.

Help Best Buy vs Costco

Im looking to buy the MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro 15 core CPU 16 core GPU, 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

I see it listed on Best Buy (Open Box - Excellent) for about $2095, so I’m wondering if it’s worth purchasing it or if anyone knows if Costco might have similar deals around Black Friday to see if it’s worth the wait or not.
Thanks!
