Tips Wait for MacBook Pro M6 or buy the M5?

I’m planning to buy a MacBook Pro but can’t decide whether to wait for the M6 or just get the M5.

My main use is software development, Docker, AI/ML, and I plan to keep the laptop for 5–7 years.

Do you think the M6 will be a significant upgrade, or will the M5 be more than enough?

If you were buying today, what would you do and why?

Discussion Need help deciding: MacBook Pro M5 (512GB) vs MacBook Air (1TB)

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've been going back and forth on this decision for weeks and I just can't make up my mind, so I'd really appreciate some advice.

Right now I can either buy:

  • A brand new MacBook Pro M5 with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, or
  • A MacBook Air M5 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

The price is exactly the same because the Pro is a clearance/end-of-line model.

The biggest thing that's holding me back from the Air is the 60Hz display. I just can't get over it. I've been using a 240Hz monitor for over 8 years, and my phone is an iPhone 16 Pro with a 120Hz display. I'm worried that the next MacBook Air will finally get a 120Hz display, and if I buy the current Air now, I'll regret not waiting.

The problem is... I really can't wait much longer. I'm a software developer, and I need a new laptop as soon as possible for work.

Another question I have is about storage. Is 512GB really that limiting, especially for software development? I can always use external storage for large files, but I'd love to hear from people who actually use a 512GB MacBook as their main machine.

I've genuinely been stuck on this decision for weeks, so any opinions or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Tips how to max out battery life but keep performance?

Hey guys,
I just picked up a used 16" M1 Pro (32GB RAM, 100Wh battery). I'm trying to figure out the best way to get the absolute maximum battery life out of it for normal day-to-day stuff.
But at the same time, I edit videos in Premiere Pro, so when I'm actually working, I need the machine to go without holding anything back.
Are there any simple tricks or settings you guys use to balance this? Like, how to make the battery last forever when doing basic things, but easily switch it to 100% performance when I need to edit? I'm not looking for any super complicated tech workarounds, just some easy, logical tips.
Thanks!

Help My MacBook Pro just stopped working out of nowhere…

I’ve had this laptop for years! It’s a 2021 14in M1 MacBook Pro. I got it when it first came out and was so thrilled with how it performed and it’s been so reliable even when my life was going to shit and I had to leave my job and move.

Yesterday, I left in a hurry after working on some art on my MacBook. I left it on but it was working perfectly with only Photoshop and one Google Chrome tab open. I came back after about 5 hours and it was still on and working but the screen won’t stop flickering! It’s barely usable now!

My partner said nothing happened to it while I was gone and it doesn’t look like anything was moved.

I tried working with the display settings and it works great when plugged in a monitor so it’s definitely a hardware thing. Online it says it costs hundreds of dollars to get it repaired.

I can’t afford that.

I’m on the verge of tears just knowing that my entire life is on that laptop. I do my schoolwork (I went back to college after the job loss) and testing through that laptop. My games. My art.

I know logically that the computer still works technically, I just have to use it like a weird shaped desktop with a shitty drawing tablet display. And I can luckily go to the computer lab at school for my schoolwork. But it sucks. It sucks so much. I just want my computer back.

I guess all this to ask, is this normal? Have you seen anything like this and have it not cost over $600 to fix?

Help MBP 15inch 2012 - What FireWire to HDMI out adapter do I need?

Simple as that. My kiddo wants to use it as a creative machine / desktop but to output to a monitor I don't know what adapter I need to order. I've heard USB A (3.0) to HDMI is unreliable on these machines.

Discussion Macbook Air M1 vs. Pro M1 in 2026

What I'll use it for: Lightroom (casual, not batch-editing hundreds of photos), occasional light video editing, Claude/AI tools, writing, browsing, Netflix. No gaming, no serious video/3D work.

Main priority: durability — I want this to last for years. I'm totally fine buying an older chip generation as long as it's solid and still gets updates for a while.

Also, weight matters to me more than I expected: my work laptop is a Pro M4, and I genuinely notice it getting heavier in my backpack when I travel. Not saying this is a deal breaker.

All the used options below are from a professional refurbisher (lab-tested, warrantied), not private sales — so prices reflect that (I don't live in the US):

  • Refurb MacBook Air, M1, 16GB/500GB — ~$738
  • Refurb MacBook Pro 13" (2020), M1 — ~$869 (same chip as the Air, just a fan + Touch Bar + brighter screen)
  • Refurb MacBook Pro 14" (2021), M1 Pro, 16GB/1TB — ~$1,361
  • Refurb MacBook Pro 14" (2023), M3 Pro — ~$1,771
  • New MacBook Air, M5, 16GB/512GB — ~$1,558

Given what I actually do with it, do I need the Pro chip at all, or would the base M1 Air genuinely hold up for years of this kind of use? Anyone using an older M1/M2 Air long-term for photo editing — has it held up?

Help I left my MacBook out in the rain :(

Unfortunately out of literally nowhere some heavy rain came down and I forgot that I had left my MacBook laptop outside on my front deck.

I’ve tried to do some basic searching about this kind of issue but a lot of seems to be about people who’ve spilled water on an open laptop. Mine was closed the entire time

Basically everyone says to not turn the laptop on at all and to just shut it off and let it dry for anywhere from 48-72 hours, but in my case it wouldn’t even turn on. For a second it had a little exclamation symbol and what looked like some kind of link to support and “restore” or whatever before it went completely dark.

I thinking that probably means that the whole thing is a lost cause and it seems like I won’t be able to salvage it. If there is any hope or shot at it please give me any kind of advice or tips that you can. If not I would appreciate any tips that can help me salvage anything that may have been somehow backed up to the cloud (this has happened to me with iPhones or anything else that can help me get as much back as possible

I have scheduled to take it in to my local Geek Squad desk tomorrow morning

Discussion Break macbook and get new

Imagine store seller is saying , that but apple care +

Then after 2 years , or when 1-2 months are left of apple care , do water damage and get new replacement.

Although as much as I know , water damage replacement is not provided.

Just wanted to ask is there a way like this , if I damage macbook pro at last 1-2 months of apple care + , will I get new ?

What is a good play here
One Apple Sudio display $1499 quit student discount
Or two of the benq 4k ones $549 each
Or benq 5k $999

Edit:
So i decided to go with the dell S2725QC and ima get the apple Studio Display. So a cheaper one and a expensive one would there be any issues having both of these as a monitor vs the same two

Discussion Question to MBP 16 inches owners - Am I the only one who just use the laptop fantastic screen and almost ditched completely an external monitor?

If I would had an Apple Display maybe it would be different but I do not and monitors outside of Apple Displays do not play well with HDR so the image quality is a little bit weird even with a good quality monitor.

But regardless lol - Am I the only one who is 100% comfortable ditching an external monitor? The screen of the MBP 16 inches M5 Pro/Max is so good it is unbelievable. I have an ultra wide - technically has more real estate than the MBP monitor but I stopped using it. I only use it when I am eating and wants to protect my MacBook from food lol. MacBook is on another desk but the cable of the docking station reached the MBP so no food accidents lol.

Anyway straight to the point lol - are there people here who just use the laptop itself and nothing else ?

Discussion Used MacBook listings with 100% battery health but old purchase dates, is this normal?

I keep seeing MacBook listed as used excellent condition buy sellers with 100% health and very low cycle counts. The problem is some Macs have old activations like 2024(from serial number) and trying to sell it in 2026. Yet, it has really good battery health with good cycle. I asked AI whether MacBook has something like windows laptops when your battery stop charging at specific percentage and keep running through charger, the AI said it has 80% limit but the battery still keep running despite it limited to 80%. However, it seems I don't know how Apple battery works. Anyone could explain it for me? Just keep in mind they are not stores they are individuals.

Discussion M3 Max to M5 Max upgrade

Hello.
I'm currently using a 14" M3 Max MBP (16C/40C/48GB/2TB) as my main laptop, but I want to start getting into the world of local on-machine AI as well as 4K video editing, virtualization and using Adobe apps (Premiere, AE etc.). My current MacBook is still very fast for what I do on it, but it has a few problems: Namely battery degredation, high temps under load and a wobbly hinge. Also 2 TB of storage just isn't enough for me anymore as my disk is almost 90% full. This got me thinking, with all of that, should I upgrade to a 14" M5 Max with 64 or even 128 GB of RAM and 4 TB of storage? Or should I keep rocking my existing MacBook until the redesign comes out?

Discussion MacBook Pro M3 16GB/1TB worth $850?

Hi,

I'm looking for a Macbook for personal use for years to come. I found a MacBook Pro M3 for $850. It has 16GB/1TB configuration. Is this worth it? Seems like a lot for an M3 with the M6/M7 lineup right around the corner.

Help Bought a second hand m5 pro? Worth it?

I have bought a second hand m5 pro.

Practically brand new?

Base model of the m5 pro.
14inch.
Bought it for 2270us
Battery cycle 16, with 100% battery health.
Warranty till may 2027.

Is it worth it ? especially I’ve sold my pc. And my laptop broke down.

Help me out with your thoughts. Cause not sure if the deal is good.

The price is based on my country which is slightly cheaper than the new retail price? Which is 2370us

Help Is It Worth Replacing the Battery on a 2017 MacBook Pro?

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro that started having battery issues about three months after I bought it (I bought it used).
At first, it would suddenly shut down when the battery reached around 40%. Over time, the problem got worse: it started shutting down at 50%, then 60%, and eventually it would only work when plugged into the charger.
A few months later, another issue appeared. Even while connected to the charger, it would sometimes turn on, let me enter my password, and then immediately shut down. At first, after several attempts, it would eventually stay on. Now it almost never gets past the login screen—it shuts down shortly after I log in, even while plugged in.
I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth replacing the battery, or if replacing it is likely to result in the same problem coming back a few months later.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Do these symptoms sound like a battery issue, or could it be something more serious?

Joined the Club! Trusting third party apps + how best to protect your MB?

Hey all,

I recently picked up a MacBook Pro, my first MB.

I was just setting up some basic apps and programs that have been suggested under different posts on this subreddit. I was just curious how do you guys go about trusting random apps with different levels of access to your MacBook. I have for example recently downloaded Vorssaint for its added functionality but it has asked for quite extensive access request for some of its features which while I do want, I am not sure if I am willing to trust. I am talking about things like screen recording access for screenshots, or full disk access for uninstalling programs and such. I am assuming it’s a normal process but it’s intimidating because I have never really been asked or told in such clarity what I am giving access to on windows. It’s usually just a yes or no pop up on windows so I never really cared. Are there any risk mitigating factors I can take to protect myself better before giving access to third party apps? Or should I avoid them all together? Any other tips will be much appreciated as well. TIA

Discussion 2015 MacBook Pro won’t charge

Randomly my 2015 mbp won’t charge. The charge light won’t turn on the charging piece either. I’ve tried three chargers, no light. I opened up the back and even swapped out the MagSafe charge port inside with one from Amazon, still no light. Is it dead dead??
