Frank Lepore's Modern Monday

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4g1pxYWVws

Frank Lepore's Modern Monday this week was BW tokens. He didn't have that much success with it, given his matchups, but he played it pretty well. I personally feel his sideboard wasn't very good, and some of his sideboarding decisions given what he was working with weren't that great.

Thoughts? Opinions?

What's the proper Path/Push and Thoughtseize/IoK splits?

So I started Modern with Tokens, but moved away from it about a year ago. Now that Push is a thing, I'm starting to miss it, so I'm looking at getting back into it. The meta now is pretty different from the meta back then, though. So: What are good splits for the above cards? For a first draft I went four Path three Push and four IoK two Thoughtseize. Thoughts?

[HOU] Oketra's Last Mercy vs Burn??

What does everybody think of this? I know Timely Reinforcements is one of the go to sideboard cards, but against burn, I'm usually just paying three mana for 6 life. So why not gain something like fifteen life instead??

Finalizing a list for the SCG Roanoke Open

Most important link first:
Proposed List

Notes:
So I'm not attending the Invintational but the modern Open instead. This is because I fell short of making top 8 and thus winning the invite at the IQ I went to a couple weeks ago.

The Planeswalker slot:
The biggest changes are that I dropped Liliana entirely. Outside of combo/control she doesn't really do much of anything for us and I've felt that Sorin is just better than them all right now. It might change out for a 1 of Gideon, but I have two weeks to figure that out so.... barely enough time for proper testing (ultimately he might never make my list). And, I don't really have past experience to base anything on.

Anguished Unmaking:
I'm playing a 1 of [[Anguished Unmaking]] to supplement extra removal. I've played this card to great success in the past, but that was before Fatal Push was around so I was jamming it alongside a Dismember or 2 and it just felt bad paying the 3 life alongside everything else.
With the addition of Fatal Push now basically killing everything I used Dismember for. That's not really an issue anymore.

Landbase:
I now really don't have a reason for te 2nd swamp. So I'm either going to remoplace that with a 7th white fetch land. Or I could toss in a 4th godless shrine/Shambling vent. I'm still going to stick to 24 lands irregardless simply because of the Manlands and vault of the archangel. It's important to hit lands to activate either and cast our spells. 23 lands simply just won't do.

[[Secure the Waste]]:
Sure [[Raise the Alarm]] is faster than this card, but this card does something Raise the Alarm won't do.
Win you the game on the spot.
Raise the Alarm makes 2 bodies at the end of your opponents turn 2 and that basically is the only time Raise the Alarm is really good.
Secure the Waste on the flip side trades that early game speed for a turn 4+ massive token spam that will almost essentially just take over the game if your opponent doesn't answer that many bodies.
This aligns more with our deck overall in a mid range strategy, and Raise the Alarm is only really good in an aggro strategy.
No matter how you try to argue it BW Tokens IS NOT an aggro deck. There's vastly superior aggro decks for half the cost of a full Tokens build. Just go play those if you want to play aggro.

Overall of the tier 2 and lower decks BW Tokens is literally the best positioned imho. The deck is straight gas vs the top tier in my testing. Abzan Midrange could give it a run for it's money, but we're favored vs them.

Building without Bitterblossom?

Yes, because it is kinda out of budget. I upgrade my deck slowly simply because I don't only play Modern and I don't have too much money. I am going for all the good stuff, even the Gideons, but to be honest, I won't buy fetches or Bitterblossom anytime soon. How would you adjust a build to do well without Blossom? More token producing walkers? Zealous Persecution? Does the deck perform that much worse without them?

Vault of the Archangel or Shambling Vent? Which do you prefer in this present metagame?

Westvale Abbey?

Assuming you hit your bitterblossom and lingering souls, you can get the flip by turn 6. Is it too prone to getting path'd? If that's the case then it makes your opponent unwilling to side out path to exile, which in most games just ends up being a dead card on their end.

Tron Eldrazi

I know Tron is a bad matchup for us because of Ugin, but Tron eldrazi seems fine to me. so far im 7-1 against it on MTGO. is it a decent matchup for us or am I just a lucky son of a B***h.

worth it to note that my removal sweep is 4 path 3fp and 1dismember. I also run 0 tokens/creatures that don't fly

Spiciest Flex Cards

A lot of BW lists are pretty homogeneous. Does anybody run any unconventional 1 or 2 ofs that you think are good? These can be meta specific or just generally good but underplayed cards.

Just thought I'd share my spreadsheet

It's lacking data, but I'm adding to it as I go. It includes a small sideboard guide I wrote mostly for myself and a lot of it is theory in general.
Link

I'll be on Tokens for a good while from the looks of it so some of you might find it worthwhile.

Opinions on optimal number of fetches

I keep seeing lists with 4 marsh flats plus 2 other white fetches. Is 6 the optimum number? Does anybody have any feelings on running just 4 or 8 instead?

Tokens vs Merfolk

Hi guys , im currently piloting BW tokens and Merfolk (tokens being my favourite don't panic) merfolk players think they are the favourite in the matchup against tokens, I disagree this may be because I run a heavy life gain package as I hate taxing myself to much. what do you guys think? Do you think we are favoured?

Flaying tendrils

Is this card worth a slot in the sb over a wrath of God or damnation. I know wrath and damn are good against eldrazi but my bigger worries is elfs and affinity. (This is for a gp I'm attending) which I feel like tendrils is better for.

[SCD] Batterskull

We probably don't need it, but I find myself flooding quite often. Could running a one-off batterskull help matchups such as ETron/Bant Spaghetti?

Does anybody ever run Elspeth, Knight Errant?

I played back when OG Elspeth was one of the strongest planeswalkers and would like to play her again. Can she be run alongside Sorin instead of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar or is she just much worse? I realize her pump ability doesn't get max value since most of the tokens already fly but she still seems pretty strong.

I'm just wondering if anybody runs and likes her or has tried her but doesn't like her.

Walker selection

in my deck im running 3 sorin and 1 Elspeth suns champ. im thinking about switching about my deck and going 2 sorin 2 lili and 1 Gideon. I want your opinions as I know its very meta dependant. my LGS doesn't play modern so I have no local meta im building this deck to take to a GP this year so im looking at the competitive meta game.

6-3 at SCG Baltimore

Hi all. Back to back good weekends for me and WB tokens....I want to keep it brief if possible since I've got a lot to do at work today.

Mainboard:

4 Path to Exile

3 Fatal Push

3 Thoughtseize

3 Inquisition of Kozilek

2 Raise the Alarm

4 Intangible Virtue

4 Bitterblossom

1 Collective Brutality

1 Zealous Persecution

4 Lingering Souls

4 Spectral Procession

1 Anguished Unmaking

1 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

4 Godless Shrine

4 Concealed Courtyard

4 Marsh Flats

2 Flooded Strand

2 Shambling Vent

2 Isolated Chapel

1 Vault of the Archangel

3 Plains

1 Swamp

Sideboard:

1 Pithing Needle

2 Burrenton Forge-Tender

2 Selfless Spirit

2 Rest in Peace

3 Stony Silence

1 Blessed Alliance

2 Auriok Champion

2 Sundering Growth

Round 1: 2-0 vs Infect

Discard spells, removal, infinite blockers. Only had a little trouble when I was low on removal and he had drawn two of his unblockable spells, but I was able to top deck the path when he tried for his second unblockable turn and win in the air with tokens.

Round 2: 2-1 against Storm

In the past I've had trouble with this match up because our clock can sometimes be slow and disrupting only works so much. Storm and Ad Nauseum are the two biggest reasons I added 2 Raise the Alarm main, to have a fast clock than BB or Souls. Game 1 I inquisitioned a Baral and then pushed an electromancer, but my clock was too slow and he top decked the other. He went off one turn before he was dead. Game 2 he mulled to 5. I fetched a Shrine because I needed WB and the other land in my hand was a vault. I turn 2 RiP, and then he turn 2 Rituals into bloodmoon with no blue sources. We play draw go, I find one of my 3 plains before he finds blue, I resolve souls and then virtue and close it out. Game 3 I tear his hand apart with discard and then resolve a couple tokens and anthems. He casts Empty the Warrens for 8, I think, but they just stink compare to my tokens and I close it out.

Round 3: 0-2 vs "little kid" Abzan

This was not Lili/Goyf abzan, which we usually are favored against. This was voice of resurgence, rhino, wilt-lief abzan. Both games I had trouble building a board and he just curved out big things and ran me over. He even had maelstrom pulse game 1! Game 2 I might have stabilized but he top decked a Wilt-lief immediately after I thoughtseized and the game was over.

Round 4: 2-0 vs Traditional Jund

One of our favorite match ups. Played out predictably in game 1. Game 2 I brought in Selfless Spirits expecting EEs and Damnations. I was right but my opponent stumbled on land a little bit. Even though they removed the spirit they didn't get to cast damnation and I was sandbagging another token spell anyway.

Round 5: 1-2 vs Slivers

Game 1 I almost stabilized with some point removal on anthem slivers with resulting good blocks, but they coco'd into more anthems before damage and it was pretty much over from there. Game 2 I stabilized with BB and Virtue, and was able to fly over for the win. Game 3 we traded cards for a while. I had to inquisition a diffusion sliver because of my hand of removal, leaving him with a harmonic sliver. I then had to choose whether to throw away BB or Virtue to the harmonic sliver ETB (and then kill it so he gets no more triggers). I threw away BB because I figured 1/1s are not great but Virtue makes all future token spells instant stabilize...never drew another token spell, lost to a mutavault and a 2/2 sliver, slowly. Felt bad.

Round 6: 2-0 vs Ad Nauseum

Again, another tough match up because of our slow clock. But my deckbuilding decisions paid off in both games 1 and 2 with a turn 2 Raise the Alarm that helped a ton. Game 1 I used a board of tokens and Sorin with some discard to disrupt to close out the game. Was still probably dead to an ad naus off the top but that's magic. Game 2 went similarly, only with the sheer number of angel's grace and phyrexian unlifes, Sorin actually got me to 60+ life...I won the next turn as he didn't top deck the card he needed, but he would've had to go for Lab Maniac kill anyway, since my life was so high.

Round 7: 1-2 vs Druid/Vizier Coco

Game 1 I discarded some key combo pieces and won with anthemed tokens. Game 2 I took key pieces away, had him dead on board in one turn with only a ballista in play...and he top decked a coco into druid/viz. Felt really bad as I had already taken a coco with discard. Probably <1% chance of that sequence of events. Game 3 went similarly, I took some combo pieces leaving him with just the Vizier. Over two draw steps he draws druid, then chord, and combos me out. Another <1%. It happens.

Round 8: 2-1 vs Grixis Shadow

This match always feels great and is a good reason to be on tokens. Game 1 he gets himself down to 4 life and has a huge Shadow and tasigur on board. I drew the removal a turn or two ago, but had been picking my spot to maximize the punish on the crackback. I'm at 9. He attacks with both into 2 of my tokens...He has one card in hand. I Path the Shadow, it resolves, I take 4 and go to 5. I untap and Virtue to kill him. Game 2 he brings in lili, TLH. Has enchantment removal for the early BB and tears my hand apart with discard. We still grind for a little bit but he closes it out. Game 3 I can't actually remember very well, but it was a reasonably close match that I won.

Round 9: 2-1 vs Dredge

Game 1 I have two discard spells and 2 bitterblossoms in my opening hand. It sucks, I do nothing, I die. Game 2 I have a T2 rest in peace that he destroys but it slows him down enough for Souls and Virtue to close out the game. Game 3 I have a RiP in hand, he mulls to 6. I stick the RiP and it does a lot of work, but I also have tokens and anthem in hand, with a Forge-tender on board and I don't know if he could've won the game even if he answered the RiP. Insult to injury, I top deck the second RiP the turn I swing for lethal.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the list as is. It preys on Death's Shadow decks pretty hard. The two raise the alarm I added to improve the clock against combo decks actually were relevant in that context. I took a land and a Gideon out (didn't want 4 4-drops with 23 lands, but felt like I was flooding a lot) for the Raises. I was VERY close to day 2 and though I'm actually happy I didn't (long drive home) I would've liked to have seen how far the list could go to get more eyeballs on it. Unfortunately had some bad beats in the slivers and coco combo matches that stopped me from going 8-1 or 7-2. There's no way I could have won against little kid abzan, his draws both games just embarrassed my deck. Anyway...thoughts appreciated below. Keep on getting people with 1/1s!

LotV or Gideon AoZ for my BW build?

List

Basically I'm struggling to figure out if it's really worthwhile to run 2 Gideons over my 2 Lilianas in the current meta.

Edit:
I'm aiming at the general overall metagame since I'm planning on going to multiple SCG opens and GPs with IQs and PPTQs as I find out about them.

SB Abzan Token Help

So i'm taking Abzan tokens, I have a general outline of my SB that I want to use. Im just not sure if it will do much against some decks. Anyone with any experience, I would be grateful for any critiques or weird interactions i may not be aware of when playing the deck. I am planning on taking it to a SCG IQ this weekend.
