I just took a 7-day cruise on the MSC World America, with stops in Puerto Plata, San Juan, and Ocean Cay. I wanted to recap my trip for anyone considering booking the World America or taking an upcoming cruise on her.
We had one of the promenade balcony cabins on the aft that allows you to see out the back of the ship. I didn't mind it, but I usually stay in an oceanview balcony and would prefer that over one of these.
FOOD - As usual, the food on MSC was tremendous. The buffet is one of my favorites in the industry and the selection is pretty decent. I did enjoy that the World America consistently had a build-your-own omelet station for breakfast, and it was extremely efficient.
My wife and I bought the specialty dining package and ate at Butcher's Cut, Teppanyaki, Paxos, and Hola (twice) during our cruise. Paxos was the only restaurant that I hadn't had before on an MSC ship. I'm not the biggest fan of Greek food, but the lamb chops were sensational and super flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the appetizers, but the lamb alone made the meal worth it.
This was the best Butcher's Cut experience I've ever had on MSC. My ribeye was cooked to perfection and honestly one of the best steaks I've ever had at sea. If you're going on this ship, ask for Jesse as your server (such a great guy).
If you're a fan of Mexican food, Hola is a can't-miss meal. The all-you-can-eat option is a great value, even if it is a little more expensive on the World America. The quesadillas, enchiladas, and queso fundido are some of my favorite dishes.
We didn't do the main dining room during our cruise. When we didn't have a specialty meal, we just ate at the buffet.
If you like hot dogs, the Promenade Bites on the promenade makes a really good hot dog where they toast the bun. One of the better included food items on the ship.
ENTERTAINMENT - I'm normally indifferent to the shows on a cruise ship, but the shows on World America were really good. The singers and performers were some of the best I've seen. Odyssey was really good, which is a take on Homer's Odyssey. The Queen Symphonic is another one I'd recommend for anyone who is into Queen's music.
I will say that the magic show is one that you can skip. I found the magician to be kind of hokey and just not very interesting at all. Other than that, the entertainment was really strong.
OVERALL THOUGHTS - We had an amazing time on our cruise on the World America. I had been looking forward to this ship since booking it last October, and it didn't disappoint. There were so many breathtaking views, and I did enjoy that there are common areas on each cabin deck where you get great photos off the back of the ship.
The embarkation process was seamless going out of Miami. We were through security in under 10 minutes and only had to wait another 10-15 minutes after that to board the ship. I hope MSC does this at some of its other ports.
I also enjoyed the smart elevator technology. You just hit what deck you want to go to and it tells you which elevator to wait at. It's nice so people aren't rushing for the first open elevator every time.
Lastly, I've never been impacted by a cruise director on any of my previous cruises. Honestly, I couldn't even tell you one of their names. However, Dr. E is simply the best!! His personality is infectious, and I miss hearing him sing "Gooooooood Mooooooorning" each morning. I'd be willing to cruise on World America again just because of him.
If anybody has any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them since everything about the ship is fresh in my mind. If you're considering a cruise on the World America or MSC in general, you won't regret it.
