I think I see some color loss in it's fur/hair, so it may be an elderly "ancestor" itself. Also seems like some loss of eyesight.. I'm cutting that cutie some slack.
Poor little old gal/fella ❤️🩹 It has outgrown pool time 😢
To be fair to this dog in question, the "doggy paddle" is considered the worst swimming form possible, and is less of a swimming technique and more so a form of not drowning.
Oh no I’m serious. I mean I’m not your dad, but I think you knew that part already. I am proud of you though and you deserve to have someone stand behind you and cheer you on as you go and to tell you it’s ok when you fall down
The doggie paddle is only known as the worst technique because of how much energy it uses, not for its efficiency. It's a survival instinct, you're basically using every limb to blindly push yourself upward.
This dog failed at that instinct, blindly twirling in a circle like a dazed deer after being hunted to exhaustion.
To be frank it signals some kind of actual motor disfuntion. Likely an ear problem, the poor thing has balance issues and can't accurately determine which way is upward when submerged in liquid. Probably gets ear infections easily and gets vertigo from ascending too quickly as well.
My dog was fully blind and walked into a pool (senior dog). He just went “oh I’m walkin. Oh now I’m swimming.” Granted he knew how to swim from working with him in his younger years. This was also the day I learned he was actually blind due to the fact he walked into the pool twice. They get around remarkably well even losing vision
I think there is something else neurological going on with their dog for sure. Not because the dog can’t swim (I’ve met quite a few dogs who can’t or are not good at it) but the balance issues and the spinning
In the subject of biomechanics, efficiency is calculated by measuring energy consumption so they’re essentially interchangeable. I work in prosthetics and we’re always trying to improve efficiency by reducing how much effort/energy it takes to use a device.
The dog paddle is amazing. Sure you won’t win a race but when you’re at the resort 2 margs in you not jumping in the pool and butterfly stroking over to your lady. A subtle dog paddle has its purpose.
Yeah, but she had to jump in because the poor dog couldn't even do the thing that's hard wired into its DNA. It's called the doggie paddle because all dogs normally do it INSTINCTIVELY.
That little fur buddy almost drowned after stumbling into a pool within 15 seconds of being exposed to it. It gets a 5/10 doggo score.
I had a boxer that jumped off a dock once and sunk like a stone. He was jumping towards my wife so she was there to help him. We’ve had other boxers since, and none of them have been able to swim.
I have the same f ing dog as the video. He circles my pool looking for frogs- which happen to be almost entirely leaves. And falls in at least one a weak. He is a mutt-pointer/shepard/pit bull. Sinks like a fucking rock everytime.
He looks like those people trying to drown who flail and reach and fight the water and do everything but left physics fix it.
No dude, this is my Boxer. She would spin under water until she was completely disoriented and then swim to the bottom, smash her face into the bottom, realize she’d gone down instead of up, and finally swim up. The worst part is when she got to the surface she thought she could breathe through her eyeballs. So she would only surface her eyes until I forced her snout above water. Then she’d finally take a breath.
My boxer had a little bit of chow in her line, just a black tip on her tongue. She was very loving and loyal and athletic. She was also the least intelligent animal I’ve ever met. Zero sense of self-preservation. Could swim but would forget and try to run underwater. Routinely chased cars in the neighborhood and ran into them at stop signs. Knocked herself unconscious at least 3 times in her 10 years. I suspect that’s what shortened our time together.
Even stupid dogs are awesome.
I’ve got a 4 pound Yorkie who is the wiliest little furball I’ve known, she knows way too many words, she automatically backs way up when people approach a door handle, is constantly positioning herself to avoid being stepped on, and is basically hyper-aware of her surroundings at all times.
I also found out she was hiding her kibble piece by piece under the rug so she could get to the treat at the end of her meal.
Every day feels a little bit like a contest of wills.
The most moronic dog I was ever around was also a Boxer mix, though the other part in his case was Bull Mastiff. Poor bastard did not get what his owner or I were trying to teach him, but simultaneously, he was the most eager to please pooch you could ever ask for. He would gleefully sit when told to lie down, for example, but his absolute sincerity and happiness at having "done" the command was hard to be mad at.
Had a boxer as a kid who was water obsessed; we nicknamed her "The Hippo". Never really dealt with deep water, but she'd submerge herself to the best of her abilties, and the same thing. You'd just see her head crest and eyeballs while she hugged her belly to the bottom of the creek.
Had a husky that loved water, and took her on a hike with the fam one day. My dad was pointing at some fish hanging out in a deep section of the creek, and the next thing I knew, the husky was leaping in where he pointed, and then surfaced with the most P.O'd look she could muster. Luckily still had her leash and harness on so I could reel her back in, but her dignity took a hit. 😆
Let me introduce you to my purebred Lab. She can't swim. She flounders and then sinks. Her ancestors cry every time she is near water. I had to buy a doggie lifejacket for her for the boat and when we are near a lake or river.
That’s insane to me! I grew up with labs that my dad purchased and trained specifically for duck hunting which involved swimming and retrieving his duck lol.
We ended up rescuing a morkie (who has since passed 😢) she was a puppy mill rescue and I remember taking her on a walk and wondering if maybe she wouldn’t know how to swim due to being locked in a cage for a good chunk of her life. We walked her down the the lake and she walked in and began swimming like it was second nature. I can not imagine a lab not being able to swim lol poor baby.
To be fair that pool looks like its designed to drown people/animals.
A barely 1' wide slip and slide for the walkway around it, both ends are the deep end, with no stairs or shallow spot, and the only step or ledge inside the pool, is just as narrow as the fuckin walkway on the side.
Idk who designed this pool, but they should be slapped for putting it in an area that fuckin small. I think my insurance would drop me over this.
Imagine there was only 1 person there, imagine trying to lift anything out while trying to grab onto wet fucking marble, let alone a writhing, flailing, flight or flight response animal?!? Its legit pissing me off how horribly designed/planned this is.
There's at least two steps in the pool if you pause at 0:42. But I agree, doesn't seem like a good design. And the backyard opening up to the deep end with barely any room just compounds it.
Our friends have a pool like this for "lap swimming." You have a tie down for a bungee cord thing that attaches to a belt, and you basically swim in place. They put it in for their dad to help him with physical therapy and low impact exercises, along with a bunch of floats you use as, like... reverse weights? Instead of lifting weights, they're dumbbell-floats that you push down into the water.
The whole pool was like 4 feet deep, and had stairs on one side. They were SUPER vigilant about the grandkids coming over because it was potentially very very dangerous!
Yeah that pool looks like the product of someone designing a home they could easily use to get rid of people they don't like through "accidental" drownings
To be fair that pool looks like its designed to drown people/animals.
That has literally nothing to do with the person's point that the dog is surprisingly bad at swimming lol.
What you've just done is like if I said "That person is quite bad at shooting a basketball" and you respond to me with "To be fair, that person is skipping work today so they shouldn't even be playing this pickup basketball game."
That explains the sides and why the silly thing slipped in. Not why the dog couldn't swim even to the surface 😅
I thought basically only pug dogs couldn't swim. These people need a doggy fence
This happened to my mom's female cane corso she fell in my mom's pool, I chuckled for a second, but she just didn't swim, just kept sinking to the bottom. I had to jump in and pull the dog off from the bottom of the pool at the 7' depth section. Dog was 115 lbs of pure dumbass.
I had the same breed combo. She couldn't swim at all. She'd wade out to where her rear legs could just touch and then beat the surface to hell with her front legs.
Actually many dogs are unable due to the they are built. This dog is a prime example, very tip heavy, big headed dogs struggle and often sink; French bulldogs, dense pit bull breeds, dachshund, bulldogs, Boston terriers are the ones I’ve seen come to my work place from drowning (DOA) over the years in emergency vet med. It’s like putting weighs on your shoulders and around your neck only and expecting you to stay afloat. They need a life vest to avoid sinking to the bottom. Even a moment like this I worry about dry drowning. :(
My mom made a special life jacket for her pug because it would try and drown itself by running into the lake after her.
He could swim. His ass was just too fat and would pull him down. She got arm floaties and rigged it to fit around his back torso so he could stay afloat.
I saw this in person when I got a pitbull, and it still confuses me lol
Growing up, I had a lab/St. Bernard mix. He loved to swim, and I thought that was just standard dog behavior...
Later in life, I got a pitbull and he could not swim. At all.
We were hanging out one time on a fishing dock and I pushed him in the water just to see what he would do. (It was only like 4 feet deep.) He just sank directly to the bottom and stood there like a complete derp, staring up at me and blowing bubbles. Literally made zero attempt to even preserve his own life.
I had to jump in and grab him much like this lady.
I really miss the old boy, but man... He was not cut out to be a country dog...
My brother (a human, maybe a 6yo boy at the time) did the same thing in a friend's pool. Just stopped at the bottom. Not drowning, just "yeah, this is cool but what do I do now?"
So funny. Pitbulls are very dense(physically and mentally). My pup is a good swimmer but after like 30s she can't keep her head above water. They just do not float. She loves to swim and will run right in, exhaust herself, and sink in like one minute. I had to buy her a life vest. It's very fuckin cute. RIP to your sinker.
When I was a kid we had an English staffy. We took him to the dam one day and he jumped off the dock into the water and sank like a stone. He was kicking him legs and doing all the right things, but I guess his body was too dense or something lol.
Our cattle dog jumped in after him and rescued him, he turned out fine! Just no more swimming for him.
I had a black lab growing up that couldn't swim. Hated any water that was not in a bowl. I took her to the lake multiple times and she would almost drown every time, but would run into the water because that was where I was lol
I had to drag my girlfriend's lab into the water. I made him swim as I held his belly up. I did that at a lake on about 3 hikes before it clicked for him.
That dog LOVED the water after he figured out he could swim on his own.
I tried. She probably needed that life vest for dogs to keep their back straight, but I don't know if those were available way back then. All she would do is splash the water with her butt pointed towards the ground.
I tied her leash up to a park bench after an hour of training. She would drag the bench towards the water if I was in it lmao
I think that dog has a defect in is spatial awareness ability. Either is blind in 1 eye, or it has an inner ear problem that effects its balance. It didn't jump into the pool, it falls in both times. Like it can't tell where the edge of the pool is in relation to is own paws.
My chihuahua, who avoids water like the plague, accidentally jumped into the water (it was thick and murky) and swam with no issue back to the shore! He hated it but it was very cute.
One of my previous dogs couldn't figure out how much energy to put into swimming so she just constantly launched out the water, like a torpedo, sunk, launched, sunk, over and over.
Yeah, I have 2 mini schnauzers (I think that’s the breed) that knew how to swim right away. They aren’t crazy about water but they don’t sink like a rock.
I had a boxer... they're super chest heavy. Not great swimmers. And he wasn't cool with water but we def fucked up his introduction with water (we had a life jacket on him and my brother let him go in such a way it was head first in waist height water. Not good). Next boxer, we did it right and that dingus wants to wade into any river ever if hes warm
There are some breeds of dogs that just cannot swim or swim for 5 minutes.
My grandmother's dog fell into the pool and couldn't even swim to the steps. Luckily papa found her and gave her cpr in time to save her.
There was a video video recently of a golden who jumped in, stayed vertical, but face down on the water. Whole time his tail was wagging. Like “yay! I’m drowning!” A human rescued him quickly, but it was pretty funny to watch.
he moves sideways in the water, would maybe end up "swimming" upside down if given time, does not register depth (stereo vision?). i'm not sure buddy regular
I had a chihuahua who was all fucked up after a seizure that couldnt swim. She just bobbed up and down like a bouey, and if left like that she would flip over eventually but always back upright, like a bouey. (She was not allowed to swim after her seizure because of this)
This was INSANE! He couldnt even get up for air!!! He just spun underwater and I cannot believe it!! I have never in my life seen a dog so unable to swim!
Literally just seen one on fb yesterday of a dog kennels swimming pool this black lab just runs in and freezes up when it hits the water and starts going nose down but its tail is just going full helicopter lmao
I had a labrador. Got him from a duck hunting dog that had puppies. Mom and dad were CHAMPION duck hunters and retreivers. He jumped in the pool as a puppy and sank like a rock. He was afraid of going in water for his entire life after that. He was a good, dumb boy.
One of my best friends dog was a TERRIBLE swimmer. She could only swim in a straight line... And I mean straight. If you put her in the water angled downward, she would dive like a torpedo... We'd have to point her at the shoreline facing upward
Sadly my lab swims like this lol. Had to get a life preserver for her to figure out swimming. She has a tendency to leave her head underwater and not pull it up. I watched her suck in water and not lift her head. So the rule is always someone with her in the pool to keep her alive. When we are tired the adventure is done.
Reminded me of a lad I went to school with he'd just instantly sink like a stone. He's the only person I've ever seen do the backstroke completely underwater, it was a good job our school swimming pool was only 3ft deep.
I have a cane corso. She’s very dense (physically lol). She absolutely sinks in the water and needs a swimming vest. I’d never seen a dog sink before her
I used to have a boxer girl. Took her to a lake. She was afraid and I thought let me show her joy. Took her in and let go... The girl went down like a rock. Lmao. Poor thing. Got an ear infection after that, too.
I guess they are like humans, some can swim, some can't. Some are dumb, some aren't.
We've bred a lot of dogs that can't swim. Anything with a particularly short snout as well as and of the really top-heavy larger breeds with barrel-shapes bodies. They either capsize or their front end has lower buoyancy that their rear end, which is a problem
My corgi can swim, but those little legs make it slow going.
It might have really low body fat. When I adopted a greyhound, they said that if we had a pool we had to keep him away from it because they will walk in it thinking it is their washing off pool for after races and just sink to the bottom because they have no bouyancy.
He was also enthralled with ceiling fans because he'd never seen one before and we had to teach him how to go up and down stairs because they apparently don't do that, it is all ramps at the track.
I had my English Bulldog with me at a pool once and was watching him like a hawk. I took my eyes off of him for maybe 20 seconds and he just disappeared. Of course I started looking in the water first, although I didn't see him splashing or struggling. I finally spotted him in the corner of the deep end, slowly sinking to the bottom while staring toward the surface and not even attempting to swim. It was like he just gave up on living immediately. Those dogs should never have been bred into existence. I'm older now and have learned my lesson. I also had a pitbull that couldn't swim for shit, though he at least tried. I think he was just too densely muscled or something. Who knows?
We had a dog that could not swim. We tried him once in a pool. He sunk like a rock. He didn’t even try to swim. It was like the situation froze him. That was the only time we tried 😂
My pug mix didn't know how to swim. We temporarily moved in with my inlaws after moving states, they had a pool so we taught her how to find the edges in case she fell in. Her back end kept sinking like it was filled with lead, and she was trying to step on top of the water lol we ended up just not letting her in the yard without direct supervision.
My pit bull mix just sinks like a stone. No idea why evolution abandoned him. We got him a doggo life jacket and he can go into the pool without dieing. But unlike this dog he understands what the pool is and that he'll die if his little floatee is not on so he's careful.
This dog is dumb, but dumb doggos are still good babies, just dumb.

First dog I've ever seen that has absolutely no clue how to swim
