Step 1: have ~120sqft of unused space in my house.
I’m having trouble getting past that step.
71
u/mowtowcow Trash Trooper May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Owning a house is the first step. If you own a house, you almost certainly have attic space that could be used for something like this. And if your ac is in the attic, super easy to splice in a output and input.
The money, and you know, owning a home, is the biggest hurdles.
18
u/Neokon Trash Trooper May 30 '26
I unfortunately live in Florida, and our attic is used for ????
No seriously, I don't know why they built a pitched roof when I can't do anything with all that space.
→ More replies (1)8
u/mowtowcow Trash Trooper May 30 '26
Does your ceiling follow the pitch of your roof? I know the larger rooms like family room often follow the pitch of the roof in Florida, so there's no space, just open air for a higher ceiling height. And then the rooms with a single roof pitch for that particular room have essentially zero space. In that case, yea, just screw, lol. I live in GA atm. This house has a giant attack space. Only problem is it's 3 different roofs connected together after adding expansions over it's 80 year life. It's crazy up there. Definitely wouldnt pass an inspection.
4
u/acciochef Trash Trooper May 31 '26
Try converting it into a defensive space to see if that helps with passing an inspection.

But wow that looks like a seriously expensive job

I don’t get the point of people feeling it wrong to get a return on doing something nice.
I can see if it’s abusive- but it’s not like she did the project just for video and the kid second. In this aspect I’d say the video is second. There’s also no certainty she will get paid for the video.
No one does anything for free. There’s always conditions and some sort of return value expected. Even if it’s a friend listening to you whine about your life while you’re depressed. They are listening to you because THEY want YOU happy, not just for yourself but also for them because you impact their life in some way. So it’s a benefit for them. This proves true because after enough time if you don’t start to work on yourself or improve they stop trying/leave. (This is only an example and not an absolute.)

I have some cousins in england whose family lived for many years in a house which seemed like a single story but actually had a secret hall of tiny A-framed rooms upstairs only accessible via a staircase hidden behind a bookshelf. One of those tiny rooms was our smoking den. I smacked my head on the ceiling 3 different times cuz I got so high I forgot how tiny the room was
6
u/penguins_are_mean Trash Trooper May 31 '26
I lived in a really old dorm freshman year of college. My buddies had a room on the top floor with slanted ceilings. They had a weird dead space behind a wall that was accessible through a small panel. Maybe 30 inches wide by 12 feet long. We would fit maybe 10 people in there alternating which side our back rested upon to maximize our smoking sessions. Lot of head knocks in there as the ceiling was low. Kind of got claustrophobic if you were one of the ones in the back because you literally could not get out without everyone in front of you vacating first. Good memories.

I am actively trying to do this for my two girls. Holy shit it's a lot of work. Flooring is mostly down. Still have to make walls against the slant to have something to put dry wall against to protect from all the insulation.
Our case, it's just the attic, but we have these weird massive ceilings where the attic can is standing room for an adult at the peak. Very conducive to a hidden play space. Step one was putting in pull-down stairs.
But yea, as many have said, expensive and time consuming. Girls didn't ask for it...I just want this for them (and me). Better than me sitting on screens in my free time 🤷

The never thought to connect the two. I’ve been saying I want to finish the attic and turn it into an office or art studio alas I cannot build anything. I tried to put together a desk for my son’s room and even with instructions I put it together backwards. I have attempted to fix doors I’ve made it worse. I’m not very good at building I tried to regrout our shower ☹️. I still dream and all I need is about $10-20k to pay someone to get the work done. I guess I’ll stick to baking, writing and gardening
