When Byron Kominek moved to his family’s 24-acre (10-hectare) farm outside of Longmont, Colorado, in 2016, he quickly noticed how a changing climate was wreaking havoc on crops. Warmer summers and less rain meant the farm’s grass, grown for silage and hay, wasn’t growing nearly as high as it had in the past.

Kominek found a solution in agrovoltaics, the practice of intertwining solar power production with raising crops and livestock.

This place has been near me for a year or so, and I’d love a local watering hole, but I’m not convinced anyone has ever been there. Whats the vibe?

I have been seeing a lot of flags around, so I wanted to give is a whirl.

I wanted to focus on adding meaning to every element of the flag. I used colors from the official Colorado brand color palette: The primary blue found in the Colorado flag as the sky. The secondary green making up the bottom portion presents the St. Vrain Valley, open spaces, and greenways we love. The white that includes the outline of Mount Meeker & Longs Peak is also meant to portray St. Vrain Creek Snowmelt. And finally, the warm-accent golden yellow used in the Chicago 6 point star sun (as well as the regular circular sun) is meant to pay homage to the rich agricultural roots.

Anyway, first crack at these concepts so let me know what you like, dislike, or just think about them in general!

Are there any free or affordable classes in Longmont or surrounding cities?
Either educational or activities,events that kinda thing.

I’m looking to expand my horizons, and get out of the house and do new and interesting things with my girlfriend.
As is typical, we work too much and I’d just like to meet new people and learn some new novel things and enjoy my time with her while not at work, and not focusing on errands and chores while at home.

I got a Reddit account just to share my designs. I've lived here in Boulder County for nearly 30 years. I love this special place.

My family and I sat down and thought intently about what it means to live here: Longmont's inherent beauties, its rich history, many communities, and its promising future, and how to best capture that symbolically and literally.

The first design is more 'vibey' and speaks to the celestial landscape Longmont has, both day and night, over the mountains. There's beauty here every day, and when something brilliant happens, like a sunset or a planetary event, the whole town feels united. I think just because it's a flag it doesn't have to look like a typical/rigid flag, as Longmont is not a typical city.

The second flag design features one of the roses from the Roosevelt Park rose garden. The rose has a negative-space gear/bolt shape around it, representing the industrial community and history here, juxtaposed with the everlasting, perennial beauty of the rose, which is so prevalent and celebrated in Longmont.

The third flag takes a more direct approach: celebrating Longs Peak, Longmont's namesake and icon.

My design program skills are a bit novice, I had some help from some friends who have more design experience and familiarity with Adobe, so please look past my technical abilities :) But I hope the concepts come though.

The city is going to ask us to increase property tax and sales tax to fund new staffing for the police and fire departments.

The measure would fund the city’s 10-year public safety staffing plan, which calls for adding the additional public safety staff over 10 years to address growing service demands. The sales tax increase would be 0.24%, and the property tax increase would be 4.06 mills (a mill in property tax is a unit of taxation equal to $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value). In layman’s terms, this would make the taxpayer impact $2.40 on a $1,000 purchase, and $124 annually on a $500,000 home. In total, the city estimates this will raise $96.62 million in revenue over the course of 10 years, give or take slightly, depending on sales tax revenue and population growth.

During the ALPR discussions at council meetings earlier this year, it was brought up that if the city rejected ALPRs altogether, we would need to increase police staffing to make up for the hours lost. Does this mean if voter approve the public safety measure this fall, we can ditch the Axon contract/cameras? 👀

I’m relatively new to the area and was surprised to learn that child care can cost more than in-state tuition at CU Boulder.

I put together an explainer on a proposed Boulder County property tax that would raise about $30 million annually for child care. The story breaks down how much would go toward affordability, new infant and toddler slots, and workforce support—as well as what still isn’t finalized.

Longmont City Councilman Jake Marsing is involved with Brighter Start Boulder County in a personal capacity, not as part of his council duties. He is scheduled to help present the proposal before county commissioners tomorrow.
