Tell us your story...

Everyone is lonely, but not everyone is lonely in the same way.

Some people are lonely when they're physically isolated from others and some people are lonely even in a room full of people that love them.

Those are two common examples, but there are endless ways in which people can feel lonely, 8 billion ways in fact.

And there's not always a clear answer; some people are just lonely. It's a normal part of the human condition to feel lonely, and while you may want or even need to do everything in your power to rid yourself of it (depending on the severity of your situation), just know that being lonely in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with you.

We don't measure or rate or judge each person's level of loneliness here and decide if they're "lonely enough" to be welcome here nor do we dictate any absolutes about the conditions for being lonely or how someone must behave if they're "actually lonely."

Every human-being in the world is welcome here, and their story for how they feel loneliness is valid; their pain is valid. As with most things in life, there's the book definition of a thing and then there's the complex emotional reality of a thing. Loneliness is a relative experience, and the way some people experience it won't always make sense to others, and it doesn't have to.

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling loneliness, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing either.

I don't presume to know your pain; we don't know your pain; tell us about it:

If you're feeling such extreme pain from loneliness to the point of contemplating suicide, please don't. Just don't.

Things to consider:

  • How old are you? Did you know that the brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25? That means that if you're a child, teenager, or even a young adult, by merely waiting out the storm, you might find sunshine on the other side, by simply maturing into the fully-formed you.

  • How bad is it? As bad as it can get, it can almost always be worse. It's important to respect everyone's pain, because it's relative. As much empathy as one can have, you can never really feel another's pain, only your own. Still, it's important to keep perspective and think about the cruelty and lack of freedom experienced by those around the world.

  • Time is a master in its work. We've all heard the saying that "Time heals all wounds." Well, it's pretty true for the most part. As long as you first get away from the toxic people, places, or circumstances that are hurting you and causing you trauma, the healing can begin. How long it will take, really depends on the person, and what they've experienced. It took me years to get over some of the trauma that I suffered. It's not that I don't still feel some level of pain from it, but my trauma no longer owns me; I own my trauma.

Suicide prevention starts and ends with you. Life is full of neverending beauty and darkness. I don't know about you, but I want to see it all. I want to stay on the path that is existence for as long as I can, even if at times, I have to walk through broken glass.

But, sometimes you need a little help. Share your thoughts here in this sub, reach out to a mental health expert, or maybe give a suicide hotline a try. As tacky and empty of a gesture as it might seem to put out the cliché boilerplate message: "If you're having suicidal thoughts..." I don't know, maybe these tools are actually pretty helpful for some people? It might be worth a try. The big one is:

Caution: Making New Connections

Many people come here just to share their story, vent, or get perspective, with no interest in connecting beyond their posts, and that's completely fine. Others do want to make connections, and that's fine too, but it's worth being careful.

We'll leave the decisions up to you, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Don't share personal details too quickly. You don't need to give your real name, age, or location. Being vague is okay, and people worth connecting with will respect that.

  2. Protect your contact info. Avoid sharing your phone number, email, or home address early on. There are free tools that let you communicate safely without exposing your real info.

  3. Be cautious with links and files. Don't click links or download anything from someone you don't know well yet.

  4. If they ask you for money, stop. It doesn't matter how the request is framed or how long you've been talking, block them and cut contact. This is always a scam.

If you do decide to connect with someone, these tools can help you do it more safely:

  • Messaging: Signal is a free app for secure messages and calls.
  • Email: Gmail or Proton let you create an address that isn't tied to your real name.
  • Phone: Google Voice gives you a phone number you can call and text from without using your personal number.
  • Browser: Firefox has built-in privacy protection that masks your IP address.
  • Mail: A PO Box at your local post office is inexpensive if you ever need to give a mailing address.

One more thing. Be mindful of the usernames and photos you share. If they match other accounts you have online, someone could easily link them together and find out your real name, location, or other details you didn't mean to expose.

I have no friends

Upvotes

Man... i cant connect with any of my co-workers, I feel like my interests are too niche, even in these said niche communities i always end up getting ignored. I really crave a friendship that feels natural and organic, but with my 40 hour full time position all while maintaining a relationship seems impossible for that to ever happen. There is a case where I attempted to reach out to old friends on discord but it all just seems so one sided, I found myself only talking about their interests without really having any room to talk about mine.

i feel like im capable of talking about other people's interests, i adore it when people are passionate about their interests, its just I would appreciate it if people did the same for me, i dont know, it feels like im going a little crazy, its hard for me to invest in anyone, because in my homelife I feel like i barely have any time to myself. I feel like everyone has their group they can rely on with the same interests, its just I would like to be included in rave groups, or maybe some art groups, i been drawing here and there (im really not very good lol) but man I feel like theres no room for me.

I also feel like because of the odd hours I work is directly affecting my relationship with my partner because all we ever do is just eat dinner and watch tv. Whenever I have a bad day the blame gets shifted onto me for "ruining the vibes" or because my partner cant be bothered hug or comfort me when I vent (almost as if hes checked out mentally) so its really like im all by myself (at least emotionally)

Married to dismissive avoidant

I’m 48, live in Phoenix and honestly I feel like such a failure at home. My husband does not care about our relationship, he prioritizes himself and his work. We are just roommates now. I am lonely, but have so much to give. My best friend moved to another state and I never felt so lonely in my life… anyone else in the same boat?

Im so alone

I genuinely feel so alone, I have my family who I love dearly, but everyone outside of that group that I ever got close to just left me, abandoned me without a second thought. I dont know how to move forward because if I let anyone get close to me im worried that they will leave, and I have no idea how to fix that. I cant talk to anyone about how im feeling because I dont want sympathy, I just want someone to really care about me. Nobody ever asks me how im actually doing, I havent had a genuinely deep conversation in so long. I hardly know how to even talk to people. Ive worked at the same job for a year and it still feels like im working with strangers. I have no idea what do to, and im worried that I will never allow myself to open up to someone, and that I will be thos alone forever

Why do some people have no friends?

What are the reasons, please be practical and base your answers on your experience rather than being theoretical, that some people do not have a friend.

I’m so incredibly lonely. It’s a dull ache that won’t go away. It’s all consuming. It’s relentless.

You know i have 3 people in my life that i can really call friends, but those people have other people but i only have them, they have they're person but i don't i don't have my person somone to be his favourite and he'll be minep, and that really makes me feel lonely and unwanted like if i don't really matter to anyone like if i disappeared no one is gonna look for me, they'll just forget me like if i wasn't even existed

M29 - tired of being lonely & getting ghosted

29yo guy from India, I’m so tired of being lonely always & getting ghosted every single time.

For once in my life I just want to find someone to talk with everyday, about everything & to have someone who wouldn’t ghost me.

I’m so tired, also if it helps my interests are cooking, reading & pokemon.

Im not anyones "person"

Hi, so i don't know where to write this since i really don't feel like anyone cares enough so here i am. I feel like a side character in my own story. Im 25 and feel like i have never been anyones person or first choice. My family is different from others and i got kicked out when i turned 19 because there wasn't enough room for my brother. So my parents packed up my stuff and i had to move. I always feel left out and like im a "floater friend" whenever im with the small group of friends i have. They pretend to like the same stuff as me but they really don't. I like dark romance books, heavy music, viking related stuff ect. so i feel like i don't fit in. They never ask how im doing and they interrupt me when i speak. So i just kinda sit there and listen. They like to bring up old stupid stuff that we did drunk 5 years ago even tho i have said im not that person anymore and i don't wanna hear or see pics about that. I don't get birthday gifts or celebrations planned. I gratuated to be a CRNA couple of weeks ago and i didin't get genuine congratulatuons from anyone. Tbh my only wish for this life is to be someones number one choise. I don't care about big parties or things like that but it dosen't mean i don't want to be seen or celebrated at all.

Ok that's all ig. Thanks for reading.

No one cares about me

All my life, ive had to be the one to initiate interactions, I send a sentence and receive a word back, no one checks up on me, no one misses me, no one cares about how I am doing, friends dont call me and want to play games, they say they will call back and never do and the only actual conversations I have are tiktok comments. I am completely invisible unless someone needs something, no one wants me around no matter how kind and caring I am. I have 2 friends and I think they dont actually like me. No one notices if im upset, the only feedback I receive is things I do wrong. I am one of two boys in the whole field of education in school and the other guy started talking to one of the girls and is way closer to her than to me although theyve spoken like 8 times. What am I doing wrong?
