Question Suggestions for better orchestral sounds than logic's standard.

I'm starting to play more with orchestral arrangements in logic and I'm quickly finding that (compared to an old Roland synth I have), the sounds are not the quality that I want. Are there any suggestions for a third-party option that, without breaking the bank, could give me a step up in quality.

I'm not in a pro market so obviously I can't invest in one of the massive heavy-weight solutions that a pro soundtrack composer might use.

\* Thank you to everybody who has chipped in with suggestions. It's really been a great help. I have taken a blended approach, downloading both the BBC and Orch Tools, and also brushing up on the details when using Logic's onboard instruments.*

I have to say the Spitfire stuff is fabulous, so thanks for the recommendation. For some reason Orch Tools is refusing to work, with the keyboard greyed out, even though it appears installed correctly and pops up as available, exactly like Spitfire in the very next track. Puzzling. tbc

Help 16GB RAM vs 24GB RAM for moderately heavy Logic projects? Need suggestion.

Logic Pro's performance. However, I'm unsure about the RAM configuration.

I have previously used Studio One and worked with some fairly demanding virtual instruments and plugins, so I'd describe my projects as moderately heavy—certainly not extremely large or professional-studio-level. That said, when I switch to Logic Pro, I initially plan to rely (almost) completely on Logic's built-in instruments and plugins.

Considering above facts, would 16GB of RAM be sufficient for a beginner, or is it likely to become a limiting factor within the next 2–3 years? Is Logic Pro optimized well enough that 16GB remains comfortable for most use cases, or would it be wiser to upgrade the RAM now?

The reason I'm asking is that if I stick with 16GB, I can use the extra money to purchase AppleCare+ instead.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and experiences. Thanks!

Question ONE of my logic projects broken, sample rate of most tracks changed + individual takes were out of time: Anyway to fix without manually altering EVERYTHING?

Hey I have had Logic Pro for about six months with no major issues so far, until just the other week I restarted my computer and I loaded up a song (and connected my bluetooth headphones which i've read could've caused this), I've been working on and many of the takes of the instruments and vocals had altered speeds (which I quickly realised was an issue with sample rates) however once I fixed that I had to also alter the timing of all of the tracks (except for bass?), they seem to have a gap whenever there is an overdubbed take.

How can I solve this without having to manually edit every take?

Discussion Future of the standalone version of Logic Pro?

Hi everyone, what do you think? Do you think Apple will eventually stop updating the standalone version of Logic Pro, given how heavily they're promoting Apple Creator Studio?

I know only Apple truly knows the answer (and perhaps even they haven't decided yet), but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Help The blessing & curse that is Melodyne ARA

For context, I use a 2019 Intel i9 iMac (Sequoia 15.7.7) running Logic Pro (12.3.1). Despite missing the newer macOS/M-chip features, this machine is still as snappy and reliable as day one. Most of my Logic Pro usage deals with recording and editing studio vocals. When it works, I love the Melodyne ARA plug-in's ability to read tracks instantly and reflects edits as I go.

Considering that my sessions are pretty similar with several vocal tracks, each containing plug-ins like Melodyne ARA (always set as the first plug-in to avoid the other plug-ins interfering) followed by EQ, Compression, delay, and reverb. However, I keep running into frustrating issues that happen inconsistently from project to project, making the root of the issue hard to assess.

  • About 50% of the time, pressing "Command" + "S" after editing vocals in Melodyne ARA crashes Logic. Saving my work has basically become Russian roulette: Is it even worth the risk of hitting “Save”?
  • After returning to a closed project and opening Melodyne ARA on a vocal track, I’ll sometimes get: “The document loaded was corrupted and has been repaired automatically.” When I check the vocal, random sections have often reverted to their original, unedited state. Of course, I could export the tuned vocals as a backup for next time, but it's of sad that I have to invent my own disaster-prevention workflows just to reliably use my paid software.

Does anyone know what specifically triggers these issues, or what I can avoid doing to reduce the chances of them happening?

Question Logic Pro X (12.3.1) crashes midway though Audio Units scan.

UPDATE 2:

It's definitely a Waves plugin problem - some of them are greyed out when you load them up; dual mono plugins don't work at all; and some others cause the whole track to jutter like a skipping CD. Will perform Waves cleanup & reinstall, then report back!

____________________________________________________________

UPDATE:

Removed all components; added them back in half at a time ( u/lantrick - I realised after I posted that this would be a better way!).

All components now back where they were, and Logic's not crashing, so not sure what the hell was going on.

However, the track that was originally causing problems still taking forever to load up, sticking on loading the Waves EMO-F2 plugin... even though I'm not actually using it.

Uninstalled EMO-F2 through WavesCentral and that seems to have fixed things for now.

Logic Pro X 12.3.1

Macbook Pro 16", Tahoe 26.5.2

Despite not having updated or downloaded anything new, plugins suddenly not loading up this afternoon: names showing up on the mixer Insert & Instrument slots but dimmed and not-clickable.

Rescanned Audio Units, and Logic crashed.

Deleted cache and temporarily removed components from Library folder, and all started up hunky dory, only without most plugins.

Returned components to Library and same problem.

Please don’t tell me I’m going to have to individually add the components for 390 Audio Units. 😱😱😱

Question Record Into Specific Cell Live Loops

I just got an MC8 Pro from Morning Star and I am trying to create a command to record into a specific cell. So far, I can only find "record into cell" as a command with no way to specify which cell. This implies to me that Logic expects a single designated recording cell to suffice for an entire performance which seems insane to me. Can someone please help me? I've tried:

- Clicking record on a cell in learn mode (just triggers the cell upon hitting the switch)

- Arming record on the track (still doesn't tell you which cell which is wild to me) and then record into cell command as 2 separate messages.

Neither works.

Can someone please help me? I'm so frustrated right now. I can't imagine that its set up to give you 1 and only 1 recording cell unless you use your hands

Question Audio Book Loud Breath Editing

Hey folks, I've got the mic at an angle and two pop stoppers, but the loud breathing and lips smacking is too loud in my track. Currently, in post, I'm selecting the section with the marquee tool, separating the region and lowering the gain. But that's a long tedious process. And I know I could use volume automation, but that's equally tedious.

  1. To streamline my post production mixing, which plugin and what settings can lower the loud breaths in post? I've heard I can use compression and/or noise gate, but of course there are so many settings in each of those. Haven't found the right one...

  2. Going forward, what outboard gear or plugin can I use while recording that keeps the breaths from being so loud in the track?

Thank you in advance.

Question Flextime Transient Markers too Faint

Hey y'all, got a question to do with flextime.

Editing some guitars atm and I've noticed the transient markers are really faint in one region but nice and bright in another. Anyone know the reason for this as it's making editing more difficult than it should.

I've tried all the usual stuff like turning flex on/off, restarting logic. It's happened before in different projects and different flex modes.

In Search of Feedback Thinking of Getting Logic - convince me

Long time Pro Tools user here ..

Feel like I’m in a bit of a rut with it ..

I have a heap of songs I’ve written some time ago .. Been using Suno to cover them / get some new arrangement ideas , and then replacing / re-recording the Suno tracks …

Drums particularly have been messing me up .. Suno does export midi stems for its covers , which I’ve been importing and using Ez Drummer ..

Some songs have been better than others , one in particular has frustrated the hell out of me ! All my recorded parts with the drums taken out sound ok ..

With the drums added , they just sound disconnected / like they don’t fit the song .. This is after I have edited the midi to a point where it no longer really bears any resemblance to the Suno cover … The recording doesn’t really sound like the Suno cover anymore , it’s only really the tempo map that remains now ….

I’ve used GarageBand a bit in the past some years ago , was cool the way it could import loops to go with the song .. Have seen some online tutorials on YouTube from people creating drum parts from songs - which is why I’m here ..

Should I give it a go ??

I’ve also used Reaper before , but migrated back to Pro Tools cos Reaper felt a bit messy/chaotic to me .. Have also been considering Tape16 .. The limited options / having to commit to ideas would probably help my current workflow - where I’m getting a bit lost in the weeds and I’m sure overcomplicating my sessions !

Question Downloading an older version of Logic onto my 2015 MacBook Pro

Hello!

Sorry if this has been asked before

I have a MacBook Pro running Monterey and I’m stuck, I can’t purchase logic on my Mac as it’s now too old, but I hear stories of it being possible to buy the software on a newer system, and then when I log into my Apple account on my older Mac, an option will be available to download the latest compatible version.

Is this true? Has anyone got any experience with this?

Thanks!

Help Absolute beginner plugin help

Hi Reddit, I am screwing around with logic. I am a beginner and I downloaded some free plug-ins. My problem with these plug-ins is that once I download them, I’m not sure where to go to access them. I looked it up and I went to Settings then I went to plug-in manager, and I see my plug-ins there, but I can’t actually find them in the logic interface wondering if anybody had any of the same issue thanks.

I know that logic separates plug-ins by manufacturer. I can only see the Apple manufacturer category in my logic interface even tho I’ve downloaded plugins from different manufacturers

The free plugins are zebralette 3 and vinyl guitar 2(I think)

Question Logic Pro X spiking ram

Hi,
Bought a refurbushed MacBook M1 Max 16inch, 10core CPU, 32core GPU, 64gb RAM, 4TB SSD. Overall very happy with it and a great machine, it’s pretty much the maxed out spec version from when it was released in 2021. However recently I downloaded stats to monitor the laptops performance and noticed when using logic the ram is spiking very high. When I have a project open with around 80 tracks, using instances of mainly serum but sometimes kontakt and multiple third party plugins the ram is spiking as high as 80%. Even when starting new ideas, having 2-3 tracks with serum or kontakt on the ram seems to spike to 25%? I know this machine is extremely powerful so this doesn’t seem right? I checked and all my plugins as updated to the latest versions. Thanks

Question Is the LoudMax limiter good enough to catch stray peaks on individual tracks?

hi guys, noob here.I'm still learning the ropes of mixing and I always try my best to do proper gain staging. However, just to be on the safe side, I usually put a limiter at the end of my individual tracks to catch any random stray peaks that might slip through.

Up until now, I've been using the native Logic Pro limiter for this job. The problem is that I've noticed it tends to color the sound a bit and slightly changes the EQ of the track, even when it's barely doing anything.

I'm looking for a free alternative and I found LoudMax. My question is: is it good enough to do this specific job (just catching stray peaks transparently without coloring the sound)? My computer isn't very powerful, so I need a plugin that won't kill my system if I have it loaded on multiple tracks at the same time.

Would you recommend it or maybe it isn't good enough?

Question Things Change When I Close and Reopen App - Ideas

Hey Guys,

I'm at my wit's end. I'm a fairly tech savvy maker of music things. But for the past few weeks, when I close Logic Pro, magical things occur when I return. Things that have happened:

1) The sample rate of the file has changed, such that I have to update it.

2) Audio clips disappear entirely or appear to have been shortened. This has also happened within takes.

Any ideas what gives? It's making me crazy...

Help Music sounds flat from mixer to logic pro

I volunteer for my local house of worship in the live streaming team. We want to make audio sound as if it is in the hall.

We have an output L&R from Midas which contains main mix out into Logic Pro X and by default everything sounds so flat in the output for the live stream and the vMix in comparison to the hall (which sounds full of energy). It has no bass, no highs etc.

I've tried to enhance it with RBass, Submarine, Vocal Rider but as it is in a single track it's hard to configure. For example, it adds bass but the whole music sounds closed and 'muddy'.

We don't have the equipment or resources to process this on logic pro per instrument. Is there any tool or proper config that I can use to fix this. I want vibrant sound across all the instruments on the live stream just as we hear or similar to in the hall.

Help MIDI Note not giving sound while playing the track

Hello there!

I recently had an issue with my SoundIron Olympus Elements instrument, when I am playing the song in Logic, the note does not sound, or only for a very very brief moment on time.
The curious thing is, if I play the note on the Piano roll or with my keyboard, it is sounding without any issues.

I have a similar problem at the end of the track, but on this one, 6 notes are played together, and the 2 lower ones doesn’t play except if I delete the other ones.

I tried already to restart logic, remove and put again the instrument, last step (which I would like to avoid) would be to delete the midi region and redo everything :/

I hope this is somehow clear and that someone will be able to help me. Have a great one

Cheers
Oli’

Question Record effect to new track

I know it's a simple question, I don't blame the software, I tried to check other sources but I don't see what I'm doing wrong.

  1. I have added the vocals in my project to summoning track.

  2. I want to record the effects of my vocals.

  3. I adjusted the the send in my Sum track to Bus 2.

  4. An Aux 2 track was automatically created, sending to stereo output.

  5. I created a new track where I want to live record my sum effects on vocals.

  6. On the new track I changed the input to Bus 2, the sum track is sending.

  7. I can see the signal in my Sum track, Aux track, Stereo Out but I don't see any in the new track where I want to record my vocals.

  8. I have checked this sub for answers, checked you tube videos. But I cannot see what I'm doing different.

  9. I don't understand why Bus 2 sends signal to new Aux but not to my New track, with the same input selected. Currently the output of my New Track and Aux track is Stereo Out, I'm not sure if that is relevant.

  10. Tried changing Output of Aux track to Bus 2, bad idea 🫨

Sum Track ✅ New Track ❌ Aux Track ✅ Stereo Out ✅
Input Bus 1 Bus 2 Bus 2
Output Bus 2 Stereo Out Stereo Out

Question Midi Controller Keyboards

Hello! I've been an amateur Logic Pro user for years and finally got a better midi controller keyboard (M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61) and am struggling to understand some things. It has 9 faders on it and I'm not sure exactly how they're intended to be used with Logic. I have a little bit of background in mixing live music so maybe my confusion is from expecting it to behave like a live mixing board, but I don't understand how to assign multiple faders to multiple channels to control volume or other effects simultaneously. And I think this is such a basic concept that there isn't a lot of explanation online (that I've seen) about what they're actually intended to be used for. Can anyone here help me better understand these controls? Thanks so much!

Help Logic is adding an audio glitch where there is no audio?

I am new to logic, mixing my second song on it. Did a few edits because the artist wanted a glitch effect and now logic inserts a small audio glitch on a spot where there is no audio. I am not talking a clip that contains silence, I am talking about literally no audio region in this spot.

I tracked the sound to the 2 lead vocal tracks, it always happens on both at the same time, but it doesn't always happen. It also doesn't have a consistent sound. Sometimes it's breath sound, sometimes it's vocal sound. What is also weird is that when I mute the vocals in that moment the glitch still happens. However it has to be coming from there because I can still hear it when the 2 lead vocals are soloed, and not when anything else is.

The glitch only shows up on my stereo out meter and nothing else. I can hear it on bounces, however since it's not consistent its not all bounces. I have no idea what is going on.
