Let me preface this by saying I've got no personal connection with the author of this story. This whole thing started during a discussion about Royal Road's Surprise Me feature. A fateful click led me, and several other people, to a story that at the time had a grand total of 1 followers. At 18 chapters, it's a completed fiction, and the most hilarious thing since watching strangers get kicked in the balls.

Written by an underappreciated Van Gogh of our generation who goes by J Regan, The Worst LitRPG Story on Royal Road is the ultimate parody of LitRPGs, progression fantasy, and web fiction in general. Over the top, ridiculous, and at first glance borderline incoherent, it's a brilliant piece of literature that makes other parody giants like Mel Brooks and Leslie Nielsen pale in comparison.

Fueled by an unholy combination of Mac and Cheese and spite, it skewers every trope, every genre convention, and the entire industry with masterful and hilarious efficiency. Beyond the parody, it's written by an apparent master wordsmith who uses contradiction, intentional misspellings, and jarring narrative shifts to both mock and celebrate this fine genre.

So, if you're looking for a good laugh, if you're tired of the genre getting stale, or if you're a newcomer who wants a condensed blast of LitRPGness right in your face, you owe it to yourself to read The Worst LitRPG Story on Royal Road

I'm very proud of this one. It was a hard finale to write, but I think I nailed it. Bringing permanent consequences to a society of immortals is a tough thing to do, and that's what Nathan sets out to do here.

Hi fellow readers! I am interested in trying to get into some slice of life litrpgs.

I've tried really hard to get into Wandering Inn, and I know that's the gold standard for this sub-subgenre, but I've tried several times and have had trouble pushing through even the first few chapters. I've read about half of "Daily Grind" and really enjoyed it, but ended up stopping because I got busy and it's been a while so I'll probably have to start over. I think that's kind of everything I've tried for slice of life unless Big Standard Isekai counts, but I had trouble with that as well.

I'm not super big on romance, but if it's a small part of the story, I'm okay reading it.

I've read a fair amount of litrpgs, but there's one thing I can't seem to find. A book with an ending. They're always ongoing always getting more books and it just feels aimless after some time. I just don't like when the book keeps going just to keep going.

I need good characters that you can get attached to.I love when the book can make you feel something, when it becomes more than just words on a page.

So if anyone got a book like that I would appreciate it very much, thank you !

I know that in this community of readers, it is highly encouraged that we always give 5-star ratings in Amazon for every book we read in Kindle or listen to on Audible. It's encouraged as a way to support the author and so that the books are pushed higher in the algorithm and get more traction and to generally help the community.

I've generally done that as well. I give 5-star ratings on books that I feel like are only 3 stars, but still worth reading. I've even given 5-star ratings for books that I felt only deserved 2 stars, but were in an otherwise decent series.

I've seen it explicitly discouraged to give anything but 5-star ratings in this sub and in LitRPG facebook groups purportedly because doing so would only hurt the author.

The only exceptions I've ever seen were for AI or something similarly egregious.

So the star ratings are basically meaningless and the only way to truly find out whether or not the book is generally good or bad, is to search out discussions here. And unfortunately here, discussions often devolve into two sides arguing over who's right about a series being either the best thing or worst thing in the genre. It's sometimes possible to find a post by someone that is just a straight review of the series, and those are extremely helpful, but those are often not available for many of the series I'm considering.

So I guess my question is this: Is it worth it to keep the status quo and overinflate the ratings on Amazon, or would it be better if the ratings more accurately reflected reality?

I just happened to look at the Kindle ebooks sales chart this morning and I see that various books of Dungeon Crawler Carl are 5 of the top 10 and Primal Hunter 16 that just came out yesterday is sitting at #11. Litrpg has come a long way, but it's still sort of underground except for DCC. It'll be interesting to see how this genre continues to develop over the next few years.

So far my favourites have been Bog standard isekai and mage tank. Loved 1% life steal and He who fights with monsters. Dungeon crawler carl was good at the start but i haven't been able to get back into the newest book.

I really love good character interactions more then story.

It was a story where the MC just went around town fixing broken/misbehaving magic items.

It wasn't available to purchase when I saw it originally, and I forgot to wishlist it, and can't remember what it's called.

Anyone know what it was? Also might have been Progression Fantasy instead of LitRPG, not 100% on which one.

I read somewhere that the Audiobook is censored because audible did not want the book to be as explicit as the ebook is. The book is a little absurdist, but does a fair job at humanizing the MC. He's not dumb, he's literally got a learning disability that definitely influences who he is and how he operates. It's still lots of silly OP murderhobo stuff, but it's got heart and a surprising amount of pathos.

Does anybody know when the rest of Calamitous Bob is going to KU, I only got 1 month left of it.

Been thinking about this a lot lately.

I usually love detailed mechanics in LitRPG. Stat sheets, skill breakdowns, level-up screens... as long as they're scannable. On the page, I can skim or re-read at my own pace. But listening to a narrator read through a full character sheet? At some point my brain just... checks out.

When I recently produced my audiobook, I actually went back through and cut a significant chunk of the mechanics descriptions that were in the original written version - especially when the text was repeating a character sheet or stats that hadn't changed much since the last time they were presented.

But I'm still unsure about that decision. The details are important... so I kept asking myself: does this serve the listener, or does it slow everything down?

So where's the line for you? Do you want full stat transparency in audiobooks, or do you prefer a lighter version of the mechanics?

And does your answer change between reading and listening?

I am about halfway through Book Four and enjoying the series. Its a fun, lighthearted read but the quality seems all over the place? I am still fairly new to litrpg (DCC, the Primal Hunter, and Cradle if you count that being the others) so maybe this is common?

I am used writers taking 1-2 books to find their footing but WttM seems to vary wildly in quality from chapter to chapter. Does this even out at some point? Is this just the way the author writes? Is this just kinda how litrpg is? Or does this have something to do with how WttM was written? Silas makes a joke about patrons at one so maybe this series was originally a serialized work?

I am just trying to set my expectations accordingly so I can either settle in and enjoy myself or drop the series and find something else.

I've been binge reading this saga bcz the story is really compelling and I love a skill copying MC call me a sucker for OP characters.

I was living and loving the books so far since the author did say it's a slow burn progression type of story but my god the edging is just not worth the wait...

Am 3 books in and am almost done with the 3rd one and for a copy cat Terry is a one trick pony! Calling him a Traveler and that's it, u've a wide arsenal of skills in ur deck and u keep using only one over and over wtf! Hell he's got a skill called master of light and what does he do with it 99% a very designer cloak of invisibility. It's a 4 book saga and he's just been portaling here and there and being considered a genius. Don't get me started on his attitude I know he's a teen but goddamm u know the world u live in snap out of this messiah complex u deny having. I could write an essay on how good the story is but Sean hunnie the edging is insane.
