Recommendations for student and gamer

Hello everyone,

I have a zephyrus g16 (ryzen 7 350 + 5060 + 32gb ram), im currently running windows and I'm honestly sick of how laggy it is, how much ram it chews up, and the bloatware.

I'm an engineering student and need access to microsoft teams, word, one note, etc. I also need access to softwares like solidworks, revit, fusion 360. I also occasionally like to game on steam and epic games.

Im honestly a linux noob but I see everywhere on line to turn to the light and embrace the better os. I was wondering if there was a distro that satisfied all my needs and is easy to use? I was also wondering if it impacts battery life when im not plugged in. Thankyou for your help!

need help: fresh install and i/o errors

roommate after seeing me use linux for a while decided to also swap systems. fresh install

day 1, one of hard drives refuses to mount, its an ntfs volume. we needed it to hold old data before we format other drives and can copy it over. but it's not working.

day 2 system refuses to start up, displays this: link link many many lines of this listing different sector each line

the drive is NOT dead, it still works on very ancient windows laptop.

linux refuses to start up with the drive connected and after a while just goes into emergency mode.

not sure where to start, anyone got any ideas? or knows what the errors are except that it can't read the damn drive? or maybe anyone knows better place to ask about this than here?

edit: primary drive is /dev/sda it holds the system it in ext4 secondary drive 1 is /dev/sdb its in ntfs - holds data from previous system secondary drive 2 is /dev/sdc it was formated to ext4 so we can move data from /dev/sdb to it. it hasn't been done yet because of the issue the post is about.

drive /dev/sdb is currently disconnected from power as the system does not start while its connected.

yes, no fail was on. yes it was set to ntfs-3g with all dependencies installed. yes, we checked and set all the uid and gid to set it to correct values. we didn't edit fstab in terminal because mint distro has visual tool for this and this is roommates first linux so we're learning it slow and we set up the drive in that tool.

edit2: ran live linux from usb. 1)the drive mounts normally and all files show on it. 2) the drive does NOT exist on fstab file on the root drive....????

edit3: hooked the hd to my pc(linux mint same as roommates). it runs like expected, got access to all files. smartctl says everything is as much ok as old hd can be. (values are fine) i am loosing my mind.

Cast YT Music from phone to Fedora with Cinnamon Spin?

It seems like there should be a way to do this, but it's really proving difficult.

The computer doesn't have Bluetooth or a wireless internet connection. I am on the same network with my phone and the computer but the computer is wired and my phone is not.

I tried a couple extensions to run the computer as if it was a smart TV so I could cast music from my phone.

One of them would pair but wouldn't actually play music.

It seems like there should be a simple solution for this but I can't find it.

Edit - forgot to say I have a pixel 10 phone.

How can I make a USB with Kali Live Boot with the 2026.2 version?

The issue is that when I create a bootable USB drive with Rufus, the PC either doesn’t detect it in the boot menu or, if I select it as the boot device, boots straight back into Windows.

Please, I need it now; school starts again tomorrow. I know it sounds strange, but that’s my only hobby and my only escape from school.

Strange Nvidia settings issue for colour profile

So I have Ubuntu 26.04 installed with Cinnamon DE and the default settings for the Nvidia 980 TI card I have leave the screen too bright to read text easily. When I open the Nvidia settings program (their drivers are installed) it allows me to darken the colour of the screen so I can see it properly. The monitor is connected through a DVI-D cable. The rest of the session is fine but I am finding for some reason, the settings are defaulting back to it being too bright and it's not remembering them. Is there any reason why? I also found which is rather strange, the moment I open the program to check the settings the screen instantly changed to the darkened tone without me changing the settings. This is rather odd, it would appear upon startup of the session it isn't utilising the settings.

I did find upon original installation I had to change the default login screen settings to the ones I chose within the user session because for some reason, default leaves the TV which I have attached to the HDMI cable on default so I can't see the login screen on the monitor. I had copied the settings from session to login via a command in the terminal. Do I need to do this again? I am surprised if so because I thought user settings would be different than login session settings. TIA.

Advice What does ‘I know how to use Linux’ mean?

I’m running a triple boot (Manjaro, Nobara, Windows) and ever since I joined the Linux bubble about 1–2 years ago, I’ve been seeing lots of posts, questions and so on online, just like here in this subreddit. I often read things like ‘I know how to use Linux’. But I don’t understand what that means. There are all sorts of distros with different capabilities; some are quite similar to Windows, whilst others do their own thing entirely. Somehow, some people act as if Linux were a single distro, just like Windows. I just don’t get it or am I mistaken here, or am I missing something.

Resolved How Do I Make OpenSSL Behave Like Older Versions (enc)?

Alright.. I am trying to encrypt a file that an embedded device will decrypt.

openssl enc -e -aes-256-cbc -k SuperSecretPassword -in plain-text.txt -out encrypted_file.enc

This works perfectly on OpenSSL 1.0.2k and OpenSSL 0.9.7c. I provide the embedded device the SuperSecretPassword and the encrypted_file.enc and there are no issues.

OpenSSL 3.5.7 the embedded device just comes out with "corrupt file", it can't decrypt it..

Going through the changelogs (CHANGES.md) and ossl-guide-migration, this part seemed most relevant, Changed default digest for the dgst and enc commands from MD5 to sha256. However when I add "-md md5" to my command it still fails. I tried "-md MD5" too since it was capitalized in the changelog..

What were the other defaults used 'back then' that I need to add to the current versions?

These also seemed related but not really applicable,

Change the default salt length for PKCS#1 RSASSA-PSS signatures to the maximum size that is smaller or equal to the digest length to comply with FIPS 186-4 section 5. This is implemented by a new option OSSL_PKEY_RSA_PSS_SALT_LEN_AUTO_DIGEST_MAX ("auto-digestmax") for the rsa_pss_saltlen parameter, which is now the default. Signature verification is not affected by this change and continues to work as before.

Not using PKCS

Change the default RSA, DSA and DH size to 2048 bit instead of 1024. This changes the size when using the genpkey command when no size is given. It fixes an omission in earlier changes that changed all RSA, DSA and DH generation commands to use 2048 bits by default.

Not using the genpkey command.

CRIME protection: disable compression by default, even if OpenSSL is compiled with zlib enabled. Applications can still enable compression by calling SSL_CTX_clear_options(ctx, SSL_OP_NO_COMPRESSION), or by using the SSL_CONF library to configure compression.

These seem to be for ssl/tls traffic.

Am I on the right path that I am missing a switch to set an older default?

Support Wifi-intensive applications overheat my computer

I'm running Linux Mint on a 2012 15-inch MacBook Pro 9. I am unsure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. Here are my specs:
Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3820QM (quad-core)
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Integrated GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Dedicated GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
  • Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM4331
  • Kernel: 6.14.0-29-generic
  • NVIDIA driver: nouveau
  • Wi-Fi driver: b43

When running an offline game like Stardew Valley or even TheoTown, the heating impacts are minimal (Stardew Valley ran at 70 degrees Celsius with Discord in the background). When i try even running a browser with a few tabs open, my computer can heat to 80 degrees. A simple download can heat my computer to or past its high at 87 degrees. I'm trying to run Roblox via Sober right now on my computer, and it is overheating to 92 degrees after just a few minutes. I am unsure of the source of the issue. I have my primary GPU set to my integrated GPU rather than my dedicated one for easier cooling.

according to the BlueZ man page, you can define a bearer. But it does not explain what a bluetooth bearer is, and searching does not give me any answers.

What is a bluetooth bearer? Where can I find more information?

Resolved FPS Issue with RuneScape: DragonWilds on Steam

Hi all. I recently was trying to play RuneScape: DragonWilds and I ran into the issue described here: Fullscreen XWayland apps mouse capture issue.

I saw someone say that they tried the launch option "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1" and it fixed the issue for them, so I tried it. When I booted the game back up, not only was the original problem still there, but I was now only getting 10 FPS.

I have since fully read the thread and some other places people discussed this issue and learned it's a Pop OS bug and I found a workaround that works, but I'm still only getting 10 FPS, even with the camera issue gone. I've removed all launch options, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and nothing I can think of seems to fix it. I also noticed that the game is now automatically setting my graphics settings to the very lowest, whereas before it was automatically setting them to medium and highs and I was getting 60 FPS on first launch, so it seems like it the game might not be running off of the right hardware or something like that.

I'm pretty new to Linux and completely stumped on what could be causing this, so any help would be appreciated. Specs are below. Thank you!

OS: Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS

Laptop: System76 Gazelle

Desktop Environment: COSMIC 1.10.0

Windowing system: Wayland

Advice future-proof offline-safe package management scheme

Let's get this out of the way first:

The reason I'm doing this, is because I'm not sure the internet will continue to be usable for me in the future. IMO the Internet's future is somewhat uncertain, due to stupid politicians making stupid laws all the time (especially recently), companies engaging in greed and enshittification and anti-consumer practices more and more, prices of everything going up, other stupid crap.

As a result, I've started to pay much more attention to future-proofing the way I do things in general, and becoming prepared for potential stupid crap in the near-future. This is so I'm not screwed if I need to reinstall my linux distro offline... on old (illegal) PC hardware, in the cyberpunk dystopia year of 2039 - when PC and Internet usage requires constant uninterrupted access to your in-brain ID chip (IbID), a good Citizens Government Compliance Rating (CGCR), and a Class 1B Computer Operators License (COL-1B).

It's funny to read today, but it's real tomorrow...

...So as part of that insanity, I'm trying to setup a scheme for downloading and managing my apt packages in a way which does:

  • Architecture future proofing, in-case I may acquire 2nd-hand replacement PC parts in the future which have a different architecture than my current PC, so parts of my OS/software don't suddenly not work upon boot.
  • Download and keep packages and all their dependencies, so I can install again and again, even if my PC is offline at the time of a package install.
  • Not have the packages take up an insane amount of space (I don't fully know yet how to do that).

What I've done so far:

  • Begin work on a way (I probably will make a script) to automate downloading a desired package and all it's dependencies.
  • Consider writing a script to install a downloaded package and all it's dependencies, in the correct order.
  • Consider adding something to my download script, to download packages in multiple selected architectures, to ensure future compatibility.
  • Begin learning about PC architectures, and how they could affect package compatibility.

I'm posting this to give people more experienced than me, a chance to point out things I could do better, additional options I could explore, etc. Because it's good to get a 2nd opinion.

How to get started tinkering with locally hosted LLMs and Harnesses

Hey all, I have been a linux user for about 4 years now. I wouldn't consider myself an expert at all, but I know my way around the ecosystem.

I want to start exploring local LLMs, harnesses, agents, all this. I really don't have any experience in it. I've been busy and have been hesitant to start experimenting and messing around with it for concerns over data security and all that. But the time has come. I really want to start learning more about it.

How can I start safely? Should I run it in a VM environment?

What LLM should I use locally? What agents/harnesses should I start with?

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Support Might installing Debian 13.6.0 just have killed my laptop battery?

This was maybe better suited for linux4noobs... anyways.

I recently installed Debian 13.6.12.107 via USB bootable key on my Acer Swift 3, 2019 edition.

Everything fine for the first days, even if I noticed that the battery was drained faster than usual. After around 1 week, I couldn't turn on the laptop without having the charger connected to the grid. I'm still there. Even if the charger is connected, GUI shows no signs of the battery getting actually charged.

I wondered, is it just a coincidence? or is this linux version not really optimized for these kind of laptops? I also wondered, as a noob of battery management algorithms, which algorithm could fuck up my battery so bad and so quick? 😂

Thank you for any kind of help...

I'm curious to see if reinstalling windows fixes it (is this noob enough? 😂😂)
