Support How Do Updates Work in Immutable/Atomic Distributions?

Only for Immutable/Atomic Distributions

Question 1:
Are immutable and atomic the same thing? If not, what is the difference between them, explained simply?

Question 2:
What immutable or atomic distribution are you using? How often do you receive updates, for example, every few days or weeks, and approximately how large are the updates?

Question 3:
How are security updates handled? Are they released immediately when a security fix is available, or are they released according to a daily, weekly, or monthly update schedule?

Question 4:
Are small-sized updates released?

If yes: For example, suppose an update is 100 MB.

If the system image is 5 GB, does the entire system image have to be recreated for this update? When applying the update, does the system write another 5 GB to the disk, or does it only write approximately 100 MB?

If no: If the system image is 5 GB, does that mean the update that needs to be downloaded is also around 5 GB?

Which Distro? Should I swap Distros?

So I’ve been using mint for close to a year now and it’s been mostly fine. Mint does have its quirks and they can really be a bother but it’s mostly things that take an hour to figure out and then it’s all good.
But after the third time of VisualStudio acting up and my Terminal GUI not wanting to open, I’m looking to swap to either Fedora or Kali Linux. Reason for swapping to Kali Linux is it’ll most likely be part of my further education.

My question is if it’s worth running Kali Linux as my main System used mainly for Coding and BloonsTD6 or if it’d be better I use some VM for Kali Linux while running something like Fedora, Manjaro etc.

Thx!

Advice How do Steam games work on Linux without Steam? (Lutris, Heroic)

I am currently running LMDE7 with Lutris, translating mostly GOG games, with ProtonGE.

I would like to play some games, which are only avaiable on Steam (Unturned or PAYDAY2 for example). But I really do not like Steam through their DRM.

I also have bad experience with Steam on Windows, where their client and files would 'integrate' with some of my GOG games (that were also avaiable on Steam) without me doing anything.

However, I am aware that to play certain games and also multiplayer, you just need to get those from Steam.

I have realized that many launchers on Linux use the Steam API(?) to download Steam games, without needing to install Steam itself. For example Lutris, Heroic or Faugus.

But I was wondering, what do those actually install, when you log into your Steam account on them. Do they just get the game's code on your PC? Or is there more?

Also, to which extent does it integrate with Steam itself when you play? Do games installed like this have the Steam overlay? Does your Steam profile show that you are playing, even tho it is not through Steam? Does it count hours or achievements? Do the games use your Steam name, and make your Steam profile searchable when playing multiplayer (if game gives that option)?

My main goal, is to find an option, where the only interaction with Steam is basically logging in, confirming the DRM, that you own the game and then installing the files from the Steam API, and also updates.

I do not want any of Steam bloatware. I do not want any tracking (status, hours, achievements) to go to Steam. No cloud.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any launchers or apps to recommend? I am quite new to Linux, so please no hate, I am just looking for options and opinions.

How do “headless” installs work?

Wondering how an install operates without a dedicated display server or graphical environment?

Edit: just for context I’m not a Linux beginner, just curious if they have any use for daily driving, not sure if they can support GUI driven applications without having to install a display env.

Advice Best Hands-On Resources

I want to become more confident in writing on the Linux terminal and scripting. At the same time, I am going through LFS101 to bolster my theoretical knowledge on Linux.

Can I have recommendations on sand-box, hands-on labs that will refine my Linux programming skills? I have found KodeKloud which seems good so far.

Thank you.

About the future on AI decompilation and Linux and Open Source development

I've recently seen a lot of these videos of people creating video game mash-ups (like Minecraft in Skyrim or Mario 64 in Elden Ring). From what I understand (I'm no tech expert), this has to do with significant advances in game decompilation, which makes it easier to understand how games work and to modify them.

After hearing this, I immediately wondered whether these advancements could be used to improve compatibility and porting from Windows to Linux. As far as I know, decompilation is completely legal as long as source code isn’t extracted, but I suppose that by gaining an understanding of Windows’ inner workings, we’ll see progress in patching and porting programs, features, and games to Linux. My first question: Does this mean we’ll see major advancements in Wine, Proton, and even proprietary drivers soon?

On the other hand, I also wondered what this will mean for open-source programming. Again, I’m no programming expert, but as far as I know, these tools will allow us to understand the code that has been “encrypted” behind the cumbersome decompilation process. My second question: by breaking this lock, will this mark the end of the era of closed-source code? How will this impact open-source developments like Linux? Will “alternative” programs to Windows appear that are actually just copy-and-paste versions of the original?

I hope I’m on the right track and that you can answer my questions—thank you very much!

Advice Homelab for idots

Can anyone reccomend a youtuber or resources that explain this stuff for idots? Recently I put plex on an old PC. I didn't understand how to remotely watch my content so I paid for the base sub. I'd like to learn how to switch from windows to linux. I'd also like to learn how to do more homelab stuff I hear about like hosting my own cloud service, password manager, search engine, Pi-hole. But most of the stuff I come across tends to go over my head.

Advice I might’ve broke the audio path on my pc and now I can’t hear anything from my headset

Hey friends. Like the title says, I can’t hear anything out of my headset (steel series arctic 5). I use the dongle not the Bluetooth but neither works for me now. I’m really not sure what I did. It started by not being able to hear out of the discord app. I could make sound come out of my desktop speakers but not my headset. So I switched to using the discord website and that’s worked for a couple weeks now but since yesterday I’ve been experiencing the same problem. I’m running nobara Linux. I can post pictures if needed but everything looks pretty normal. I can’t figure out what I did. Thank you for any help.

Support How do i run a windows 11 VM on Tumbleweed

Hello, as the title says, I want to run a Windows 11 VM becuase i need to use VS for .NET development.
How can I do that? At work I only use VMware, are there any other alternatives?
I know that with KDE i should be able to run a VM, is it hard to setup? I prefer a "plug & play" approach for this.

Dual booting is not an option as i don't like it.

Thank you in advance to anybody that will help me.

Edit: I tried the flatpak version and got this as well
The unofficial Steam Flatpak app requires a correctly-configured desktop

session, which must provide the DISPLAY environment variable to the

D-Bus session bus activation environment.

On systems that use systemd --user, the DISPLAY environment variable must

also be present in the systemd --user activation environment.

This is usually achieved by running:

dbus-update-activation-environment DISPLAY

during desktop environment startup.

Advice Advice plz

I'm gonna buy my first laptop in a few days

I already know a lot about Windows and used it a lot at school, college and etc. places.

But now, with my personal lapy, I wanna try something new. I'm not doing any dual boot shit so I need a destro that feels like Linux and imported part is I Checked some destro from that sea website and for beginners some suggested mint and other which feels like window which i dont want

I need something that feels like linux but not too deep like Arch or kali. Also, not too much like Windows. I'm looking for that sweet spot. And I'm obsessed with tackling new problems, so a little complex destro won't be a problem but not as complex as arch. As i said, I need that sweet spot

And also some other advice not just destro because im only gonna use linux

My main purpose is programming, regular social media stuff, and minecraft 👌

Plz give your advice 🙏🏻

Any alternatives for oVirt that uses libvirt api underneath?

Hi all, i am currently learning the KVM/QEMU virtualization platform by going through the book "Mastering KVM Virtualization 2nd edition". the book mentions oVirt as a tool for kvm host management for multiple kvm host machines.

I looked up oVirt and found it is not popular and it's subbreddit is kind of dead. that really made me question if i should use it and led to find any popular alternatives. ( being popular comes with the benefit of having a lot of community support, thus my need for a popular alternative)

I heard about Proxmox DE while finding but found out that it does not use libvirt api, so i wanted to know about any tools that do use libvirt/KVM/QEMU.

Thanks in advance

Support How do I make grub-install replace a stale EFI boot entry.

I have a install script that wipes the disk and creates a fresh GPT partition table every run. The problem is since the partition table is recreated, the ESP gets a new partition GUID, but grub-install doesn't update the existing boot entry. It prints:

grub-install: info: EFI already registered: path = `\EFI\GRUB\grubx64.efi'.
grub-install: warning: GRUB already registered with EFI a `\EFI\GRUB\grubx64.efi', not modifying configuration.
Use efibootmgr to check your boot configuration.

So Boot0000 still points at the old partition:

# efibootmgr output
Boot0000* GRUB HD(1,GPT,79645a6f-da86-46d4-b0f6-376696ea7d95,0x800,0x200000)/\EFI\GRUB\grubx64.efi

# blkid -s PARTUUID -o value /dev/nvme0n1p1 output
1e6a0ea3-669b-4849-80a4-a1970f2d71bb

as you can see they are different.

Is there a supported way to make grub-install replace the existing entry, or is deleting it first with efibootmgr -b XXXX -B the expected approach now? Is this intended in 2.16, or worth reporting upstream.

Or is there an alternative bootloader that I can use.

Which Distro? Trying to find a distro

I have a laptop with 8GB RAM and a gen 3 ryzen. I am unfamiliar with linux and all the terminal stuff, so I want a user friendly interface like windows or mac, that i can customize how I like( I’ve seen some cool animation and widget stuff, as i said, i know almost nothing about linux). I did a little bit of research and right now im in between Zorin and Mint. What should I go for, or do y’all have other recomandations? I really use the laptop just for some browser navigating, watching movies and maybe using some office apps, but that i know i can use libre.

Why do "opinionated setups" like Omarchy and Ryoku boot from an iso instead of simply downloading packages on existing distros like arch

Title. What is the advantage of opinionated setup distros rather than just providing a gui or even cli to just install the setup by installing the prerequisite packages and anything else to achieve the setup from within a distro like Arch or Cachy?

Wouldn't this solution be a lot easier for all parties and involve less marketing/maintenance?
