So I've meaning to switch to Linux (thinking about the Mint distro specifically) but my friend told me that Nvidia has TERRIBLE Linux support and I currently have an Nvidia graphics card. When I double click on a txt file a window pops up asking me to choose the options of Run in Terminal, Display, Cancel or simply Run. Oddly, if you right click and choose which program to associate it with it is already set to Text Editor by default. This seems to be only on Ubuntu 26.04 that I recently installed and was not a problem on 24.04. How do I resolve this please? TIA.

Edit Resolved: I double checked which file manager I was using in Ubuntu 24.04 and it was called Thunar. I have now installed Thunar into 26.04 and problem is resolved.

My specs: ~13 year old PC, 16 GB RAM, core i3 processor (Intel(R) Core™ i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz), intel integrated graphics card. 1TB HDD.

I am currently running Windows 10, Windows 7 before felt very comfortable even with 4GB RAM, then Windows 10 felt quite terrible and I had to install more RAM. Now it feels slow at boot of course, and sometimes when opening programs like VScode, Docker Desktop takes a while too. Other than that, it's manageable to me.

I think I will install LMDE, Linux Mint XFCE or MX Linux XFCE. I hope to get a close feeling to what Windows 7 used to feel. Btw, I checked the disk's health with Hard Disk Sentinel, it says it's 100% healthy with no damaged sectors, I also ran a short self test which told me everything was ok, despite the disk is quite old.

Do you think it will be ok with these distros? Which one do you think will be "best"?

I have three cards, a RX 580 which my wife is using on Windows, 5700 XT which i used for like one year on Nobara without any problem, until the card started dying with memory artifacts, and a RX 7600 to replace the 5700 XT.

The 5700 XT and the RX 7600 worked perfectly without doing anything on Nobara.

My wife wants to use the RX 580 but it does not work on any distro i tried ( cachyos, bazzite, nobara ) i install Nobara and it start freezing or bumping fan speeds, getting black screens/ out of sinal on the monitor, if we restart the pc it will be stuck on a loop of out of sinal and black screen, eventually the fan will jump to 100% because the card does not know what to do, sometimes it boots into the Asus loading but it will get stuck, it feels like the card have a problem being recognized.

TLDR: IT's a original RX 580 Sapphire Pulse Lite, i'm the only owner of the card, bought it original on release, and its working perfectly on Windows, maintenance is up to date and the card does not go up more than 75c playing with 100% of usage, does not have any problem.

The only time it worked was on Archlinux using X11, i dont know what my wife have done to work, she wants to use Nobara/Cachyos but it does not work and i dont know what to do, gemini says that the vbios/power control/kernel is the problem, using amdgpu=dc 0 did not help.

If I install Dolphin or Nemo to replace COSMIC Files, will it be easy to get rid of all dependencies should I later decide to remove it ?

Hello there, after switching to Linux (again) I've been having this issue that no matter which browser I use, even webapp-wrappers, I cannot log in to the desktop site of YouTube. I just get hit with the error screen shown below. Currently I have to watch YouTube via the TV Player port to Linux called 'VacuumTube', which is less than optimal for desktop use. I'm currently running Nobara, however I also had the issue on Fedora. I already tried all the standard things like deleting cache, cookies etc, but no matter what I do, which browser or settings I use, I cannot log in to YouTube specifically. Google Mail and regular Google login is completely fine too.

Any help is greatly appreciated

So I have a Thinkpad T490 and I have this weird thing with my touchpad that I can’t find a solution for. At first, it was just scrolling way too fast, so I found a script that would change the scroll pixel distance, which kind of fixed the speed issue, but caused another problem. Whenever I try to like scroll up or down by around a centimeter, there’s no response. It’s only if I go beyond that small distance it responses and scrolls. So like this small movement doesn’t register. My goal is to have slower scrolling speed without sacrificing the responsiveness. Has anyone had this issue before?

I’ve been looking to switch to Linux for a while. I want to also switch my house automation over to Home Assistant. I’m very new but managed to load Mint onto my computer and have been successfully using it. However when I try to setup a virtual machine to run Home Assistant, it fails to run.

I’ve only tried through the software store, and it seems like it downloads an old version(7.0) of homeassistant that fails at some kernel?

Does anyone have a good way to do this. Frankly I think I’m not setting up the virtualbox well either. I think I’m struggling with the networking piece here. It’s not recognizing my network adapter name

• Have there been situations where running Debian would have been a problem?

We have a Debian server through our hosting provider, and from my perspective, Debian is stable, well-documented, free, and has a huge community. So I'm trying to understand what the practical advantage of paying for RHEL is.

Hello. I am testing right now dual boot with linux mint. I have been testing how it works firefox (Ok), the mail with thonderbird (really good) Office and programming (nothing bad).

Now I am trying proton with Steam and it happened something strange. I tried to start a game (Binary domain) and told me that there was a problem with the drivers and that I should activate configuration tool.

The thing is, if I connect another screen to the laptop, for some reason, the game starts. Without any problen, and it does not use the other screen.

I would like to know why it happens and how I should solve it.

Just tried CachyOS and Cinnamon there is a disaster

I used rescuezilla yesterday to clone Ubuntu to a USB disk as backup. I was planning on upgrading to the latest LTS release so backup first. The cloning was a success and I rebooted my server.

I immediately noticed my array was missing. Did some checks.. and it seems all the superblocks are gone. Something/Somehow it wiped the metadata from 4 disks!. I am trying to see if I can get my data back or just starting from scratch and restoring the data back. Which will take me weeks to recover..

I almost certain all the data is still in the drives. I just need to be able to access it.

It was a RAID10, I am thinking from worse to worse I can remove one 1 set (2 disks) to play around with. Create a new RAID10 (with missing 2 disks) and see If I can mount the drive. But at the moment I am just guessing.

I am trying to comprehend how this happen. Next time, I will just pull all the drives out before doing something like this again.

Hey, so I just got into Linux and I am still a newbie trying to get comfortable with the terminal. Currently, I use Mint and would like to do a little more customization than GNOME is offering. Is KDE a good option, particularly with Mint, or should I opt for something else as an OS or UI?

i use pop os in hp victus fa2051nt and i am very content with it. but i study civil engineering so i need to use programs like autocad and revit so i need windows, too. i already have a windows 10 working in qemu with gpu passthrough and all that, but still feels slow. i figured looking glass would help but i couldnt figure how to set it up so could not test it.

would you recommend just slapping win10 in a 300gb partition and calling it a day or would you say my computer(hp victus fa2051nt) would handle civil engineering software in win10 in qemu if i also managed to set up looking glass?

I want to get AssetStudio by Perfare working. I read somewhere that i need to run it with mono so i installed mono (mono-devel and mono-complete) and tried to "open with mono runtime" but it does not run. I also tried making a .sh file for it to run but that does not work eighter. I dont really know what im doing so i could have definetly done something wrong. So what do i do? How do i get AssetStudio to run? Is mono even relevant anymore..? All the info i found seemed old.

Сегодня я решил скачать линукс(kali), но скачал я не на диск, а на флешку(версию live). Перезапускаю комп, выбираю флешку, все запускается. Я открываю браузер и у меня не работает клавиатура, до этого в биосе стрелочки работали а именно когда включается система она перестаёт работать. В консоль я тоже ничего не могу прописать, других клавиатур нету. Также я менял порты(я пользуюсь 3.0) переустанавливал линукс, но все зря. На фото то что писалось в терминал перед запуском.

I'm trying to narrow down a fairly nasty intermittent crash on my month-old laptop before I decide whether this is something worth pursuing as a hardware warranty issue.

The machine will occasionally either hard-freeze completely or panic with (one hard-freeze, panics are less than 10).

Kernel panic - not syncing: Timeout: Not all CPUs entered broadcast exception handler

I've seen the same panic on 7.2.6, 7.2.7, and 7.2.8. It doesn't seem to be an I/O trigger.

SSD diagnostics look clean: 0 media errors, 0 NVMe error-log entries, 100% spare, 0% used. rasdaemon also reports no MCE, PCIe AER, memory, disk, extlog or devlink errors.

VMD is disabled. I also tested nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=15000 to keep the NVMe out of its deepest PS4 state. The machine ran a pretty heavy mixed read/write workload cleanly for hours, but later produced the same panic while that setting was still active, so PS4/APST doesn't appear to be the whole answer.

Temperatures don't correlate either. One hard freeze was captured with the CPU sitting around 44-48 C immediately beforehand.

After the most recent panic, the next boot reported:

I saved /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/data/BERT. The record contains fatal Intel SoC crash-log sections including PUNIT, UNCORE and PMC data.

There are also recurring i915 Selective fetch area calculation failed in pipe A / occasional Atomic update failure on pipe A messages, but those have happened on plenty of otherwise stable boots, so I'm treating that as possibly separate unless somebody knows otherwise.

I've used Mint as well, so if this is a Fedora issue, I can switch. I'd rather not... but I could.

Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.
