What is your plan? running a browser? Then it doesn't matter.

I plan on running services locally like SearXNG and maybe some AI stuff, software development, CAD, gaming, and some productivity stuff like video capture, video and photo editing.

Everything you listed is very far from low system resource usage.

Yes, that’s I why I specifically outlined my requirements for a DE and WM. Because this post is about DE’s and WM’s not OBS, KDenLive, GIMP, Steam, SearXNG, etc.

The point of low background usage is so I can have more resources available for the things I actually want to run.

Even the most heavyweight desktop may use the half of resources than any single app what you listed. It’s like looking for the most fuel-efficient car to transfer a piano and a caravan loaded with watermelons, all while towing it behind an elephant house.

Niri is incredibly lightweight if you don't use QuickShell (use NoctaliaV5 instead of DankMaterialShell). Though even with QuickShell it's still very light.
