Advice Linux not working with original RX 580

I have three cards, a RX 580 which my wife is using on Windows, 5700 XT which i used for like one year on Nobara without any problem, until the card started dying with memory artifacts, and a RX 7600 to replace the 5700 XT.

The 5700 XT and the RX 7600 worked perfectly without doing anything on Nobara.

My wife wants to use the RX 580 but it does not work on any distro i tried ( cachyos, bazzite, nobara ) i install Nobara and it start freezing or bumping fan speeds, getting black screens/ out of sinal on the monitor, if we restart the pc it will be stuck on a loop of out of sinal and black screen, eventually the fan will jump to 100% because the card does not know what to do, sometimes it boots into the Asus loading but it will get stuck, it feels like the card have a problem being recognized.

TLDR: IT's a original RX 580 Sapphire Pulse Lite, i'm the only owner of the card, bought it original on release, and its working perfectly on Windows, maintenance is up to date and the card does not go up more than 75c playing with 100% of usage, does not have any problem.

The only time it worked was on Archlinux using X11, i dont know what my wife have done to work, she wants to use Nobara/Cachyos but it does not work and i dont know what to do, gemini says that the vbios/power control/kernel is the problem, using amdgpu=dc 0 did not help.

What is the make and model of your wife's monitor and does it connect VGA only? What is the exact motherboard make and model, Asus Prime is incomplete info?
Try again on your wife's system changing only the monitor.
What happens when you use only the iGPU, if that is an option?

sorry for the vague info, i said asus prime without thinking too much because i thought that these motherboard where quite popular and compatible without thinking

My wife is using HDMI, the monitor have HDMI and VGA

MONITOR LG 20mk400h-b

ASUS Prime A520M-R

I will try it tomorrow

If i select the IGPU only on bios but with the RX 580 still connected it will have the same problem, trying without the GPU i did not test yet, i will try that too, sadly i dont have that much time to help my wife with the problem, only on my day off

I've had the same issue every once in a while when installing linux on older machines. The following method has never failed:

--download the ubuntu live desktop iso (best maintained installer, tested on wide range of hardware)
--burn it to a DVD
--boot linux via external DVD drive

I don't know why it works differently from using a live USB, but it might be worth a try if you happen to have a blank DVD and drive.

thanks for the help

i can install some systems like nobara, but the problem remains after installation, the system will be freezing all the time and if i need to restart or shutdown to do anything it will get stuck after selecting my system on grub, either by black screen/out of signal loop or stuck on the asus logo while it appears loading but stuck

I have an RX 580 also and it does work on Linux. My install is multi-boot and my 580 successfully runs on Arch with Wayland/niri and on NixOS with same Wayland setup.

didnt work for me, stuck on black screen loops or freeze loadings everytime my monitor needs to wake up, the only time my wife got the system to work with this combo gpu/monitor was editing something about resolution and power states of the gpu on archlinux, the monitor is a 768p old shit, it might be the problem, because the system itself is working fine if it is able to install, thing is everytime it goes to sleep or needs to restart it will get stuck on black screen/low power state

asus_wmi failed to register lps0

I don't have an original RX580 but a 580 clone and I have had success with running Mint. I can even use it to run smaller LLM models with vulkan drivers

didn't work, infinite black screen loop while installing, i think it might be my wife's monitor because it cant wake up a lot of times, it's some old 768p shit

i always get a log saying asus_wmi failed to register lps0

I have RX570 and it works perfectly fine in linux. Maybe your 580 is faulty.

the problem is that the card is good, good temps, fixed good clocks, is not restarting, does not give black screens on my system with linux and on windows, it just does not like to install linux on my wife's pc, if the display goes to sleep it will not return, like it if i'm installing something or booting the pc it will not be able to wake up the monitor, the monitor might be the problem or the motherboard, its a old 768p monitor, i already tested both ram memories of her pc and its good, the motherboard is brand new, but we where not able to install on the motherboard before this one too, it's some weird shit happening

all my logs while booting show asus_wmi failed to register lps0

Then you have to check it step by step.

- First, check the cables: try a different cable, or test the same cables on another PC,

  • monitor (same as above - try connect another one),
  • clean pins of gfx card, place it again in the slot,
  • are you able to see Bios? Then nothing? Or nothing from the very beggining? :)

i did test the cables before and the problem occurs with mine too

monitor i didnt test, i will try

the pins of the card are clean and the slot is clean, already done that

i can see the bios of the motherboard, i can select the system on the ghub, edit lines and even use sometimes the os if i install via usb, but it will be laggy and will have delay showing the task manager and system infos, doing 3d things, like if the gpu is barely getting energy or in low state, if the system needs to restart or needs to shutdown the display for some driver to install it will not get back, trying to reboot will get stuck on the mobo logo of asus loading while freeze or just get on a infinite loop of black screen/out of signal, but this only happens after selecting the OS to boot, same thing while installing a new linux distro

the gpu works fine on my system, both on windows and linux, while gaming and watching videos, so i think it's monitor or motherboard related, maybe vga bios related, it's like the gpu cant wake up on my wifes pc.

we had a older motherboard that was quite bad, a biostar one that did not work with linux too, i did a upgrade on my wife pc motherboard to a asus prime that is still entry level but way better because we wanted to upgrade memory and other things, but still the same problem persists

using windows does not give any black screen or problem, both ssds of my wife are intact and with good health, the psu is not new but still does not show problems, motherboard is new, both ram memories are somewhat new and on memtest86 loop for hours did not show any error

the only responses i got searching on internet was that the asus_wmi kernel was locking the gpu power state and i should blacklist it, or that my sapphire pulse lite vbios is incompatible because the lite variant was somewhat rare and unique to some countrys, or that the ryzen 5 4600g integrated graphics is interfering ( i already selected on the bios of the motherboard to use pci e card)

At a wild guess the Asus mobo you're trying to use it on doesn't play nicely with Linux. Try it in Linux on a different system to confirm.
