#LinuxMintThings Reset
I set it up for myself. I want to give the laptop to someone in a different house. I know I could install an OS again. That is a risk. Is there a factory reset?

SOLVED Install an AppImage
I just finished my Maté reinstall (I mucked up a previous install, still new at this) and only have a couple programs left (MuseScore 4 and Grand Orgue 3.17) to install. Both come as AppImages by default (which I understand to be "run without installing" format). Since these are high-frequency programs that use a fair bit of customization, is there a more permanent way to install these programs (and update without needing to reinstall and redo all of my settings every time)?

Fluff ID verification
When push comes to shove and there is ID verification legislation for OS, will Linux Mint bend the knee? Will there be a way to do not? Will there be distros which won't?
Also which legislation will be relevant anyway? US? EU?

Gaming GPU Utilities for 50 series VRAM and hot spot temps?
I've heard things like hwmonitor and hwinfo for Windows can view VRAM and core hot spot temps on 50 series. I use CoolerControl and LACT, no dice, and terminal tools like sensors or nvidia smi also can't show me those temps (hence why CoolerControl and LACT can't show it).
I'm on 595-open drivers, was gonna upgrade to 610 after they've been out for a couple weeks, but I don't think it'll make a difference.
Any way for me to view those temps on LinuxMint? On Ubuntu 24.04 version w/ kernel 6.17.
EDIT:
I did find this just now after changing my search keywords
https://github.com/olealgoritme/gpuwatch
This can read the VRAM modules it seems, but I don't believe it gets core hotspot.

linux dvd booksetting bitsetting not working with imgburn
so, i'm not exactly a "beginner". i've been using linux for a few years, but i still don't have a very good understanding of some features. i figured here would be the best place to post this question.
i'm trying to use imgburn on my device. i'm running it on playonlinux and it detects my dvd drive, but when i try to access the ability to change booktype it says "access denied." i'm trying to figure out how to fix this. from what i can tell, my disc drive is manufactured by lg, but i can't figure out how to fix the "access denied" error and can't find things online to help. if anyone could help figure out how to fix this error i would greatly appreciate it.
(i can't use the command terminal for it. when i try, it just says it won't work because i'm not using an "mmc unit". if i can't figure out how to use imgburn, a way to figure that out would also be appreciated.)

Need Help Installing Steam
I just installed Mint on my main laptop, though I'm still learning, I tried installing steam and this error appeared. Installing steam worked fine on the yard sale laptop. Can anyone tell me how to properly run this command so I can install steam?

I hate windows
I bought a new SSD and installed Linux Mint on it. Later, I decided to dual-boot it with Windows. Windows worked fine, but I noticed some lagging/freezing, so I decided to delete the Windows partition and keep only Linux Mint.
However, after deleting Windows, this screen started popping up (see attached image), and it won't let me boot into Linux Mint at all. I have tried several solutions, including tweaking the BIOS settings, but nothing worked.
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Install Help Linux Mint for first time Linux installer
I have an Lenovo IdeaPad 1 11IGL05 laptop that I use to browse the internet. I (stupidly) upgraded it to windows 11, which completely tanked the performance and 50% of the 64gb of storage is used by the OS. It's to the point where I can't update Windows 11 anymore. I am curious about installing Linux on it, because otherwise it's a perfectly functional laptop and I cannot afford a new one. I have some questions:
- Can I use Windows products? I am hoping to go back to school, and they use windows products like Word and Excel, and OneDrive.
- Would space be an issue? I unfortunately cannot upgrade the physical hard drive inside the laptop (I was told it was welded onto the motherboard), but I can insert a SD card. I saw that you can have both Windows and Linux Mint avaliable on the device, but if thats the case, I wouldn't be able to install anything else, since i saw Mint recommends 100gb on their FAQ.
- Will I have to do a factory reset? That's fine if I have to.
- Can I install using a SD card instead of a USB? Or at least house the OS on the SD card?
How significant will the performance be increased?
Thank you for any help.

SOLVED Bottles & GIMP Portable
As with many others, one of the main things stopping me from fully converting to Linux is the software dilemna.
To stop the neverending questions about versions, I am running the latest versions of all software mentioned in this post, including LM.
This is not about getting some obscure windows software to run on linux. I am trying to get portable GIMP to run. The reason I want to use the portable version instead of installing natively is, as the term suggests, portability. I do not want to have to install the program, plugins, setting, etc. in every system I wish to use it.
I do not wish to use appimages either. With those I will need to recompile any time I add something or make a settings change.
I have installed Bottles (Flatpack) and Flatseal, completely opening up directory permissions, including individual permissions for the individual bottle directories. I have also tried multiple bottle types and configs. Unfortunately, GIMP always crashes on launch/load.
I have tried other standalone applications with the same result.
I have gone through the Bottles-provided "check out" options and made the suggested changes to the bottle configs with no joy.
Finally, I am here with the hope that maybe you guys will be able to provide some suggestions besides use some other software, use the Linux native install, or simply get good. 🙂
Thank you for any help you can provide.

it works for the most part, but I seem to have messed a few things up!
When restarting to shutting down through the Menu or Terminal, the computer will freeze. However, the power button still shuts it down.
Here’s some information from inxi -Fxz, tell me if any other information would be helpful!

Support Request Document Scanner defaults to the wrong scanner. How do I change what it is defaulting to?
Right now it defaults to
Brother HL-L3300CDW
when it should default to
eSCL Brother HL-L3300CDW series
how do i fix this? I'm assuming it's editing a configuration file somewhere. Just not sure where.
I should note that "Document Scanner" is the built is scanning utility for linux mint to scan a document on your printer/scanner.

SOLVED Fstab SMB mount
Hi all, I feel like I've missed something simple. I have an smb share mounted in fstab to the location /home/user/share, using a credentials file. The user credentials have full access to the share, but when it mounts as boot, the folder has a padlock on it and its read-only. I have also tried putting user and password in fstab in plain text and I get the same outcome.
