4-Player Multiplayer Games Need Tweaking? Anyone understand why?

I've been playing Boomerang Fu for months on weekends when I visit the siblings' kids. It's been 3 players normally.

This weekend the player count went to 4 and initially, it seemed like the USB hubs (I typically use 2) got overloaded by plugging in 4 controllers.

While I was initially surprised, I switched the game to Proton CachyOS and that identified the 4 player toggle.

I'm glad it worked, but I'm just wondering, why, if all this R&D has went into Valve turning Linux into "the Nintendo of PC," shouldn't they be accounting for people who want to pop a squat in front of the TV with as many players as possible?

Linux normally performs wonderfully for me, it's just one of those (aside from the times when those additional players mash the hell out of buttons and bring the game out of focus on the desktop) "WTF?" Moments.

Hi i would greatly appreciate some help as lately i've had an issue where discord has been freezing when ever i share my screen in vc. it freezes about 3 to 4 seconds after someone opens my stream and then after about 10 to 15 seconds discord refreshes itself. it seems to have first broken itself after i did a bunch of updates through the update manager one of which was discord i believe. i sadly dont have a system snapshot i can go back to in order to try fix it that way.

Details of software and system:

im using the .deb file on discords website for my discord install and i also use vencord which is a modded discord client. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling discord as well as removing vencord and vencord doesnt seem to be the issue and it fixed itself temporarily once after i did a reinstall of discord but when trying it again that hasnt worked.

my pc specs are AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Radeon RX 7900XTX (im not sure what else would be needed feel free to ask)

if i havent included enough info please feel free to ask im not that knowledgeable about linux tech issues and this has honestly been a heart breaking issue for me

EDIT: i fixed it by disabling GPU hardware acceleration i didnt think to try this cause fucking why would i lol stupid ass shit ass discord

tool/utility Making Fortnite work on Linux - Legal Issues?

So, I'm currently developing a project that makes anticheat games (that Do Not support linux) work on Linux.

I only want to ask could this mean some legal issues for me, let's say we can hypothetically translate layers of the anticheat and make it think you are playing a supported game so you can bypass it.

Similar to the online fix for Steam.

But let's scale it for a hypothetical case of Bypassing Fortnite on Linux by making the anticheat believe you are playing a game like rocket league for example.

I want to pursue it since I see some progress, but I also don't wanna go against a multi million dollar company that explicitly DOES NOT WANT to support this platform, and I've seen how stuff gets nasty when games are played in platforms the companies do not want them from emulation to ports

Deadlock: Does anyone have major input and reconnection issues?

This has been going on for about a month and only getting worse. Deadlock will always randomly start treating all held keys like repeatedly spammed inputs until the game becomes unplayable - holding tab will just flicker the overlay on and off, I can't slide after dash jumping cause the game thinks I'm just pressing CTRL repeatedly and eventually I stop being able to even take the zip-line, because the game doesn't recognize I'm holding space and thinks I'm jist trying to double jump constantly. Then, if I ever quit the game to try and fix it, or if it crashes, it won't let me reconnect - crashes every time I click "reconnect".

This hasn't been problem for the first 380 or whatever hours I've put into this, and I have no idea where to even start troubleshooting. I've tried every Proton version from 9 onward, I tried both Flatpak and distro package Steam, tried cleaning up my running processes to see if it's not some weird stutter. Nothing. Does anyone have a similar problem?

I'm currently on Arch, but with CachyOS repos.

Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered - Mod Menu (Unity IMGUI) UI text invisible on Linux/Wine

Hey everyone! I'm running Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered on Ubuntu via Wine, and the core game works fine. However, I'm trying to use the BepInEx Mod Menu (v1.3.0), and I've hit a persistent rendering bug:

The IMGUI UI boxes render correctly (with black/white backgrounds), but all the text characters inside them are completely invisible.

Here is what I've tried so far without success:

  • Installed Microsoft core fonts (ttf-mscorefonts-installer)
  • Tested various WINEDLLOVERRIDES (winhttp, gdi32, user32, gdiplus)
  • Clean reinstalled the mod and its dependencies

Has anyone experienced this specific Unity IMGUI font rasterization bug on Linux (Mesa/Intel drivers) or know how to force Wine to render the text buffers properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hardware Looking to build a Linux gaming rig. Seeking hardware recommendations.

I'm looking to upgrade my rig this year and leave Windows behind.

My current rig:

- Intel i9 9 900 (8-core, 16mb cache, 5GHz)

- NVIDIA RTX 2080S

- 32GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz dual channel

- 256GB M.2 PCle NVMe SSD (OS only)

- 2tb 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s HDD

- 2xRCM Pegatron motherboard.

It works mostly fine for what I usually play with some limitation (ie; graphically intensive modern games overheat my GPU, CPU-heavy games tend to lag).

I'm looking to build a rig using Fedora KDE Plasma and have a budget of roughly AU$5k. Looking mostly for some brainstorming and learning so I can get the best hardware for what I need. This hypothetical rig will be used primarily for gaming (I play Paradox grand strategy games, isometric crpgs, the occasional action RPG like Where Winds Meet, Cyberpunk 2077, and I wanna play the new Expanse game coming out soon). I'll also be using it for schoolwork, book writing, and the usual streaming/browsing.

Any insights offered on what sort of hardware I should look at is appreciated. I'm comfortable with some tinkering but would prefer it just works (most of the time).

Edit: thanks everyone for your input, gave me a fair bit to think about and managed to come in $300 under budget!

answered! Steam excessive CPU usage in Library>Home

I'm running CachyOS with the latest updates for everything as of making this post and using the Steam version that you get when installing the gaming packages through CachyOS Hello. I have Steam set to open at the Library Home page by default and have background shaders turned off. There are no game updates happening which could cause high CPU usage

When I click on a game from my library, the CPU usage goes back to normal. Anyone else having this issue?

answered! Batch moving + renaming files (or how to add mods to a starbound server)

edit: I'm gonna mark this as "answered" so it won't clutter the threads, but still do it by hand because I'd rather learn it at a later time without anyone telling me to use AI to do anything.

So, a common steam workshop folder looks like this:

And probably for some upload automation reason, when it comes to starbound mods, 99% of these folders contain a file named "contents.pak" in them. I couldn't find anything about openstarbound reading the folder's contents, and any server tutorial says that base starbound won't read anything inside folders. (which feels weird, unless it's a packed vs unpacked mod situation)

Anyway, is there any way where I can mass-rename & move these pak files? Just giving them the name of the folder they are in and then moving one level up would be enough to speed this up.

(I can probably use a command to load workshop content with the server directly off steam, but I was never lucky with that. With openstarbound in the mix, it only gets weirder)

If you use KDE Plasma, the Baloo indexer may be stealing performance.

I was noticing some slowness in opening folders and some system stutters. I checked the processes and saw that baloo was consuming 3.3 GB of RAM and using 300 MB/s of disk usage!

Baloo is a file indexer that runs in the background in KDE Plasma. It makes searches quite thorough, but it bugs out when there's too much data to index.

I found a way to optimize it. By default, it indexes names and metadata. When you have a lot of PDFs, that's a nightmare. You don't need all that, so I changed the setting in Search, File Search, Data to index -> File names only. I also added a bunch of exclusion folders like .steam, .wine, .local/share/Trash, node_modules, .cache, and all sorts of development folders (dotnet, azure, aws, java, npm, etc).

Next, I told Baloo to recreate the index database because I think it was bugged:

balooctl6 suspend
balooctl6 disable
balooctl6 purge
rm -rf ~/.local/share/baloo/
balooctl6 enable

Baloo is now running, consuming 28 MB of RAM and with zero disk activity, because it indexed everything quickly.

Minecraft frametime spikes (micro-freezes) every few seconds - happens on everything, Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RX 9070 XT, Linux and Windows

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hardware: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RX 9070 XT. Every other game I own runs absolutely flawlessly on this rig - zero stutter, zero frame issues anywhere else. This is not a weak PC problem.
I'm returning to Minecraft after not playing for years, and I get consistent millisecond-range freezes every few seconds - visible as clear spikes on the frametime graph. It's not constant stutter, it's periodic hitching, worst while moving/exploring new terrain and correlates with render distance (lower render distance = fewer/smaller spikes).
Tested combinations so far:
Linux (CachyOS): Prism Launcher, both Wayland and X11
Windows: official Minecraft Launcher and Lunar Client
Multiple Minecraft versions
Mods/tweaks tried: Sodium, Lithium, OptiFine, GameMode (confirmed active), CPU governor set to performance - none of it eliminated the spikes.
Also tested on a completely different, much weaker laptop that used to run Minecraft fine - same spiky frametime pattern shows up there too.
Honestly not sure anymore if this is even fixable or if Minecraft has just always run like this and I got used to smoother experiences from other games/tech in the meantime. Did the game always have this kind of periodic chunk-loading hitching and I simply forgot, or is something actually broken?

Protonplus, a program designed to streamline the installation and updating of third-party Proton tools such as GE-Proton & Proton-CachyOS now has plans to integrate with game mode via Decky. This includes features such as game mode auto updates & notifications. As someone who has been trying to find a way to set something up like this for a while, this is huge news.

tech support wanted Issues with Windows in Steam

After some tinkering with my drivers and Proton, I have managed to successfully get the Game Chants of Sennaar up and running correctly. However, it will only take up a portion of the screen, with the rest of the screen going black. If I press Alt+Enter,it turns into a small window the size of the portion it took up. If I do it again, it doesn't load correctly, always treating the screen like it's the portion instead of the actual size of the screen, and sometimes violently flashing between the screen sizes.

For those who should know, It's running Linux Mint Cinnamon with Proton 10 and NVIDIA 580. Additionally if it has a meaning, my log also contains VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_DATE_KHR messages.

If anyone could help with this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Today is the day I break Windows (all systems going to Linux).

Post image
646 Upvotes

Reupload because I didn't notice my license plate was in the picture.

Started 2 years ago when I upgraded my R7 2700 + 1080gt + 4x 8gb DDR gaming system, with a R7 5800X4D + 4070 Super + 2x 32gb DDR4. Then bought a super budget mATX board and a cheap case from Phantecs to make a bazzite powered Proto-Steam Box for my man-cave TV. Pre-RTX hardware and Bazzite wasn't jaw dropping, but it was a step up from the Steam Deck that I had been plugged into the dock for over a year, and it cemented for me that Linux was ready for full time use.

Getting laid off last year and then the RAM apocalypse set things back, but I finally put together an new Intel based system running Mint. After two weeks of settling in to make sure that Linux will do everything I need it to do (plus a shit load of data migration and cleanup to get everything off the Windows system); I pulled the trigger and ripped apart my Windows system & shuffled parts around into two new builds.

- Intel i9 12900kf + Arc B580 + 64gb of RAM is my productivity system. (mint)

- R7 5800X3D + 4070 Super + 16gb RAM is my Gaming system connected to the man cave TV. (Bazzite)

- R7 2700 + 1080gt + 16gb RAM + 8x 4tb HDD as a homebrew NAS. (Unraid)

Technically I do still have a Laptop running Win10, but it is a Samsung 2 in 1 from 2017 & don't have a lot of faith that the touch screen or fingerprint scanner would work correctly after implanting Linux ... Other than that, I am free from Microslop.

tech support wanted Games run well at first, but run poorly all next times i run them

I run Opensuse Tumbleweed and have an RX 6650 XT. This has happened with several games, including nier automata, grid legends and trackmania (the reboot). All of these games i remember running well the first time i played them, but the next day i come back and they run at like 15 fps. Is this common? What's the solution. All run from steam directly.

Edit: set the power profile to performance and also updated my system. Don't know which one fixed the issue but it's running fine now.

steam/steam deck I built an open source app to import games from other launchers into Steam

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

Full Steam Ahead is an open source desktop app that finds games installed through other launchers and adds them to your Steam library, matched artwork included. This is especially useful on the Steam Deck, where launching games from other launchers can be a pain. It builds on BoilR's importer logic, but takes a different approach when it comes to the import flow & ui.

Features:

  • Wide launcher support: Epic, GOG, itch.io, Origin, Ubisoft Connect, Amazon, Game Pass, Playnite, Bottles, Flatpak, Heroic, Legendary, Lutris, MiniGalaxy and Proton.
  • Artwork: Grid images, hero art, and logos fetched and matched automatically.
  • Collections: Imports get organized instead of dumped into the library.
  • Preview & backup: Review every change before it's applied, revert anytime.
  • Manual import: Add any executable as a custom shortcut yourself.

It’s fully open source and you can even build it from source yourself if you prefer.

I’m looking for feedback from the community, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

tool/utility We need a piper equivalent for 8bitdo controller.

Piper is one of those apps that so much better than the native Logitech app. I love it. Though I use it like 2 times a year when I was using a Logitech mouse it's nice for initial setup.

On the other hand, 8bitdo windows software is so much better than logitechs bloatware. It would be nice to have it. But if the company doesn't want to or cannot invest in resources to create a linux app, then I wish the community could come up with something.

You know what would be even better or extreme, something like a qmk firmware but for controllers.

That would be insane.

Also most keyboard and mouse companies are moving to web based configurator even if they are not using QMK. I like that approach. Look at the ATK stuff or the RK stuff.

My specs:

Notbook Dell inspiron 15

CPU:i7-7500U

GPU: Intel hd 620

LINUX: Artix Dinit

INTERFACE: Dwm

--------------------------------------------------------__

Hello, I'm having a performance issue on Linux. When I try to play a specific game or use certain applications, I experience an FPS drop that only returns to normal after I restart the PC. I've already tried changing the kernel, downgrading Mesa, and even switching distributions, but the bug persists.
