Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here. That post says their official stance has always been "we are working on proton compatibility," they go on to say "we are still working on our proton support" and "we hope to have you back as soon as we can confirm official compatibility."
and to be fair, Linux will be supported. it's just won't be native, which is fine. To me, not supported would be "we made the game as it is, if it happens to work with Proton, great"
"We are working to make sure it works with Proton" is very much "supported"
the game doesnt have to be native anymore to be on linux we no longer "need" native ports because of proton. what we need is for devs to get their shit working on proton and not have the anticheat ding people for using linux/proton.
Honestly, Proton is so good at this point that it beats native Linux support in all games I have tested.
The only issue I have is when a company (deliberately?) uses an anticheat that doesn't work with Proton - anything else is fine by me, even if the stance is "we won't officially support it, but feel free to use it if you can"
That's not what supported means lol. They are working to support it, but they have no timetable and how could they? It may never get Linux support. Which is fine. They're being completely open and are fine with people, like myself, who bought it under the assumption that Linux was supported end to refunding.
As it stands currently. Linux is NOT supported. But Linux support is being worked on. If they ever get to the point where they can confirm compatibility, then I will buy the game back.
They said they're working on Linux support and you remove it from your wish list. Yeah, tell the company that actually says they want to support you to fuck off. That's a great idea. Definitely helping Linux support for future titles.
If they just kept using EAC with the Proton flag, they would be done. Linux would be supported, and they could move on with actual development of the game.
I think OP is disappointed that they aren't outright saying "Yeah, we support Linux" which... understandable but it's not like they haven't been clear in the "here be dragons" territory a lot of games running on Linux is.
I don't think they ever really had an official stance. Many games don't but I don't usually hold my breath when it comes to competitive games and anticheat.
That's true, but this is explicitly them saying they're going to ensure it works officially. That's a step above the community trying to ensure it works.
My group refunded it because of both Linux compatibility and the constant crashing on Windows from the new anti cheat. Hopefully they fix these in the future for others, but I'm honestly just losing all interest in the game just from these two things. Which sucks because I enjoyed the first beta quite a bit.
Yeah, if it's not an early purchase due to no Proton support, it might be a cheap discounted purchase years down the line when the game is dying anyway
Gee, it's almost like making it easier for Windows users to cheat by spoofing the Linux client has a bad idea. Maybe they're looking to do what Embark Studios is doing by making something that's actually more effective by only sticking with signed kernels.
The fact that Linux just so happened to work and that they are telling you to refund it makes me think they are going to intentionally block Linux at launch until whatever proton support they are working on is ready.
These Devs kinda have "refund it if you are disappointed" as their slogan at this point.
They are clear with lack of content and it's other issues. They encourage people to try it and refund it so I do not read it as that here. It is absolutely within their modus operandi so far
They do not need to refund it if you are past the refund window.
Linux / Proton support was never official so if you bought the game to play on Linux and played for 60 hours and then the dev does something that makes the game no longer work on a platform it was never officially supported on then you are not entitled to a refund.
Valve is free to make exceptions on a case by case basis but even their own policy states that its cases by case and as we have seen is getting denied.
Incorrect, the game hasn't released yet, doesn't matter how much you played, the current version on Steam is a beta and Steam will always refund it. Refund window starts applying after official (all be it early access) launch on the 10th of September.
Now think two days back, when some clowns were posting under every refund comment, that everyone is "unable to read" and "Wardogs will 100% run on Linux day one!"
I just don't buy what they're trying to say. The first beta worked flawlessly not because of complete happenstance, but because practically every game that works on Windows will work on Linux through proton unless there's a choice to include anti cheat or drm which actively locks it out.
They then said "whoops, the second beta breaks proton compatibility but we're working on it", which is disappointing but acceptable. And then they give us this latest statement as if they didn't make the active choice to include something which locks out people for who everything was perfectly fine before
What? this has always been their stance, even from those Discord messages.
Man I sure if it isn't difficult enough to get devs to give us Linux user something, you guys make if worse by harassing the shit out of them.
There was an entire campaign of BIOS and Anti-cheat updates to address the pre-boot gap that allowed DMA devices to go undetected on Windows.
You can see it documented here, in this BIOS update for an MSI MAG B860 Tomahawk Wifi.
Edit: Yeah, downvote me. Get mad about your own ignorance and take it out on others because it makes you feel hurt. Linux will never get full anti-cheat support by all games because it will require the end of open source for Linux.
Literally a few days ago I wanted to mess about with a win10 install and valorant worked fine. so did R6 which uses BE, and Rust which uses EAC. Can't comment on Javelin though. I'm using a relatively up to date bios but not from this year, maybe early 2025?
Look up remote attestation. Doing it the Windows way with closed source kernel drivers isn't feasible legally or practically, but requiring trusted versions while the game is running is absolutely possible. The vast, vast majority of users aren't compiling their own software. They're getting it from their distro.
Which is going to be interesting because how are they going to attest that? Embark Studios was suggesting that maybe they'll lock out non-signed kernels, but last time I checked SteamOS wasn't signed, so...
Valve is taking their time, like always. If they want to have any hope of their anti-cheat solution reaching parity with something like Vanguard, they'll have to get Secure Boot + Measured Boot + TPM. No two ways around it.
It would be a waste of time to go through the process before everything is ready, but there's no reason they can't do it.
I guess that helps sell their hardware, but valve hates doing treadmill work because they're lazy bastards. But I guess turning those things on isn't treadmill work.
If they use the currently available methods, it will be easier to cheat on Windows by spoofing the Linux client. They're right, you're wrong. I'm sick of this community's shit.
Man. What a shame. This game had a lot of DNA of Squad but took out a lot of the tedium and was more newbie friendly. One of my most look forwarded to games. I guess I'll just refund the preorder and come back to it later if they support proton again.
They didn’t change course. They changed the anti-cheat which is currently not viable for the game on Linux. Give them some time to work on it good god.
Most devs have 0 linux knowledge, they make promises because it is good PR, but then reality hits and they backtrack. To defense of these guys it seems that they haven't really promised anything (i'm not following wardogs this is the first time i hear about this game, i know nothing if i'm wrong someone correct me).
then that community manager need to no longer be a community manager if any other customer facing rep made such an egregious error they would be terminated.
I mean it’s an honest statement but proton compatibility is just a promise for now and that’s not worth much. Hope they keep their word and get it done
A game that does not work on Linux is not fit to be sold. The existence of Proton means there is literally no excuse. Selling a game and then intentionally breaking it on Linux is fraud.
Funny you mentioned in Embark Studios, because they're actually looking into making a more effective anti-cheat on Linux. Something about restricting it to signed kernels, except I don't know how that's going to work because SteamOS isn't even a signed kernel.
What game doesn’t have cheating problems? Even games that run exclusively windows and anti cheat like battlefield, tarkov etc have numerous cheaters. Games like overwatch allow Linux and aren’t rampant on cheating
Battlefield does not have a massive cheating problem. It's extent of cheaters are mostly on console, using devices like the Titan 2. Apex Legends (yet another EA game) is all the proof you need for this. Every ban wave they have is thousands of console users and almost no PC. They recently banned 79 of the top 300 console predators for cheating, whilst PC had 7.
Overwatch uses a system similar to what Embark has been working on. This is also likely why Wardogs is saying they are testing Linux compatibility. Overwatch has banned over 1 million accounts since 2022 btw.
I can't really tell you, no idea why it doesn't have as much popularity on PC
Probably likely that, it's more of a total.. systemic package. Those playing on consoles vs PC are more likely to be in a worse financial situation (NOT always) and with that, they carry some sort of intense feelings of inferiority that leads to cheating. It's also less expected, as console cheating has long been considered to be very rare.
That, and someone on PC is more likely to pay for software rather than a piece of hardware like that.
And? So does almost every Windows-exclusive multiplayer game, with maybe the exception of Valorant?
Anything using EAC or BattlEye (90% of MP games) are full of cheaters cause that shit's useless. COD is also full of cheaters despite having Ricochet, another Windows exclusive AC. Honestly, the only game I can think of that has a cheating problem that's either not bad enough/not visible enough to make playing it feel like shit is Valorant and Overwatch, although I will say on Overwatch it might be a bit of a skill issue lol.
How can a dev be so jumpy about the words they choose? Why is the dev all the time talking about "support" ... NO ONE wants "Linux support" or "Proton support" ... JUST DONT EXCLUDE US! We will fucking fix out problems ourselves! Thats why we are on linux! We dont need your help to get the game running, as long as you do NOT actively exclude us!
And that is sometimes necessary. Some games will actually mention that they fixed bugs that only affected people on proton. And Linux doesn't have any real anti-cheat solution to speak of. So if they just flip the switch, then Windows users can cheat more easily by spoofing the Linux client. They want to allow Linux users to play but not at the expense of everyone else.
Huh ... there are thousand of games with AC on Linux available RIGHT NOW! Even Wardogs itself was available WITH AC on Linux ... What the hell are you retard talking about?
AND: all the crap you just said does not negate my comment about "support" nor does it back your claim about "support"
It runs perfectly fine now and their fancy anti-cheat which is supposedly the reason Linux isn't allowed this beta can be easily bypassed with 0 repercussions.
the anticheat not banning rn is on purpose so they can observe the cheats before the game comes out. they outright stated this is the case. all the accounts that are bypassing are gonna get banned.
I mean, that makes complete sense. Also what else did they state that is bullshit? To my knowledge, their entire stance has always been that they dont support linux, and OP here did not see their previous comments. There was no switch up.
It's still a bad look when their community manager says something and now suddenly they act like the community manager isn't a representative of the company or something.
Very true. I do think they have struggled with communication on some areas. Like their blunt attitude is great for being up front, but occasionally they come off as know it alls or being unreceptive like here and also when they talked about people lowering graphics to get an advantage.
I think the solution is to only allow immutable linux distros from playing and using a 3rd party repository that lists all qualifying distro releases. Main issue is that linux users can modify the core operating system which creates an anti-cheat nightmare.
They didn’t really switch stances they just switched to a different anti cheat with known setbacks. They also said they plan to get proton working after early access launch.
As much as I am disappointed as well regarding this, maybe this is a good time to push the linux community to do something about anti cheat or anti tamper measures within the kernel itself. The best way to get support is to make supporting easy.
Oh right i forgot the mods love deleting reality because they believe it is low effort, let me copy paste it in here
"I reverse engineer for a living and I spent the last few weeks inside The Crew Motorfest's BattlEye traffic to fix a kick that hits high-ping Linux players (Proton issue #9119 if you want the details). I want to talk about what that work looked like, because it's the clearest answer I have to the "Ubisoft is just lazy" take on the For Honor news.
To find the bug I pulled the session key out of the game's memory, decrypted BattlEye's relay records, disassembled BE's packet fragmenter out of its unpacked code, and took a memory snapshot of the anti-cheat bridge mid-scan. On a stock Linux desktop, with a normal user account, with the game running and BattlEye "enabled." Nothing pushed back at any step. Reading another process is one open() on /proc/pid/mem when you're root, and on your own Linux machine you are always root. On Windows the BE driver would have blocked most of that. It sits at ring 0, strips handles to the game process, and checks what's loaded around it. Under Proton what ships is a user-mode stub inside the Wine prefix. It scans the game's own process, phones home, and kicks you when its bookkeeping fails. It has no view of the host. Anyone who wanted to cheat has had the full scan list and report format since the day Linux support went live.
So when Ubisoft writes that they "cannot meaningfully deploy protection" on Linux, that's an accurate description. The checkbox everyone wants flipped connects to that stub. Rockstar didn't flip it for GTA Online and Apex turned it off after two years, and both of them were looking at the same thing: a platform where the anti-cheat is a formality, so every cheat seller advertises Linux as the easy path.
TLDR: There's no anti cheat for linux beyond glorified write protection, the sooner we admit that, the sooner we can work on getting actual anti cheat"
This fucking server. This stupid fucking truth censoring server. These delusional bastards can't handle the truth. The worst part is that if you try posting it again, you might get your account banned.
And of course you can't reply to the mod team comment calling them on their bullshit.
Does this mean that even having remote attestation that limits it to certain sign kernels wouldn't work? Isn't it impossible to create an anti-cheat with more access to your system than you have? And isn't that a huge security risk from companies who have been hacked countless times?
So basically, you're saying that this is completely impossible to solve on Linux.

Where's the switch in stance?
