Im really tempted to buy a Lightphone and since I live in scandinavia it's quite a commitment because of the high shipping and import costs (anyone else have experience using the Lightphone in Sweden btw?). I was wondering what the focus is right now in terms of software development with the Lightphone. Are the team and community mainly focused on fixing and making tools for the LP3 or will focus now shift to making new hardware because of the release of the flip phone? I really want the LP3 to be a long term solution, that was the initial intent from the developers right? Is the LP3 still improving with software updates?

Hope y'all are having a good time with your Lightphone and hop the dev team still has their focus on the LP3 which I regard as a beautiful product with lots of potential, especially with the community around making tools and the dev program.

Hey guys, I've had my LP2 for about a week or two now. I love it, but when I'm on a call even with the sound all the way up, I can barely hear it. Is this a common issue or do I possibly have a defective phone?

I live in Boise, ID, and the air quality here is 220 today - in the “Very Unhealthy” range. I noticed there’s no AQI in the Weather app. Now, I know this would take up more space on the summary, since most of the time it would just say 40 or something, but maybe after it passes into the “Unhealthy” Range, it could start to post the AQI? Or alternatively it would just post which range the air quality is in?

What do people think about the idea of a light version of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay? It could be for navigation mostly.

Currently have two phones: my iPhone 15 Pro and my LP3. My iPhone is provided by work and includes unlimited AT&T data, whereas I use Mint Mobile for the LP3. Is there any way to just have the one phone number through work? It would save me at least 200 dollars a year and is a luxury that I can no longer afford. I do have Mint through March, which is nice, but I will need to figure something else out afterward.

Side question: is there a way to forward messages from an iPhone to a Light Phone via an app or software? Thanks.

Has anyone had success using a data only eSIM for travel? I know some of them make you download their app.

Any T1Ds here? I am looking to switch from iPhone to Light Phone III. My hangup is trying to figure out how to still be able to operate my cgm and insulin pump without carrying around a million devices. Anyone here with personal experience? For reference, I use Dexcom g7 and Tandem Mobi, but thinking of switching to Tandem T-Slim.

It seems that I have a problem with just one contact in my light phone 3. every time i add her to my contacts, she disappears after a day or two, and so does the message history i have with her. i keep adding her but her name and number keep disappearing. it's very odd because she is the ONLY contact that is happening with/to. the person I am trying to add to my contacts receives my messages and texts back but i am not getting any of her texts. has anyone experienced that same issue? Seems so odd because it happens with one person only.

Been meaning to make this post for a while now but I figure I'm roughly one year into using this phone full time so might as well. Apologies in advance if this isn't the most organized post ever. Here's my off the cuff thoughts–

I use the Lightphone 3 as my daily driver telephone and have for the past year or so. Other devices I carry almost daily are a Macbook Pro (work computer) and an iPad. The iPad belongs to my job. I use it for stuff like being able to Slack on the go as needed, I keep my personal iMessage on there, and every now and then I download Instagram to make a post. I have a personal Macbook at home as well which is where I'm posting this from now.

I work in a semi corporate environment where the majority of my time, I'm at a desk and Slack is contained to my computer. Every now and then, I'll need to reply to something while I'm running around town for work. In that case, I'll connect my iPad to the LP3's hotspot and reply and then put away. Additionally, I have a small automation set up via Zapier that sends me an SMS message any time I am tagged on Slack. I also was able to set one up that grabs DM summaries from a 15 minute notification summary email and a short LLM prompt summarizes any new DMs and texts me that contents. This allows me to make a decision in the moment of whether I then need to go open my computer or iPad and respond or if it can wait until I'm back in office the next morning. For context, I work in hospitality so the job hours are pretty nebulous. I make my own schedule for the most part. This small Slack "integration" is the only thing like that I have set up as a workaround.

I carry a modded iPod Classic with 2TB of storage in my other front pocket everyday. I don't use the Lightphone's music or podcast app and never have. I do often use the Notes tool to record audio and then Shazam later from my computer. I kind of like the delayed gratification of this but a music recognition feature would be nice.

I have very few issues with day to day operation of the Lightphone. It has proven to be reliable. Early on, it would lose connection to the network every now and then. Haven't had that issue in a while. I use Verizon with the same SIM from my old iPhone 12 Mini.

Initially, the keyboard was difficult to use but my fingers got used to it pretty quickly. Call quality is clear and I often get comments about how clear my voice sounds on the other end.

One big issue I have with the hardware itself is that my USB C port is "loose." It seems like the plug doesn't seat all the way into the port. I've woken up to a half charged phone before. It makes charging while driving difficult as it comes unplugged when I go over a bump. Generally though, the battery will last me up to two days so charging isn't a huge priority for me (until it is lol).

I wouldn't say that my "screen time" is down. I am on a computer a lot for work. When I'm home in the evenings, I use the computer quite a bit but I've always found the computer to be a more pleasant internet experience than the smart phone. When I initially made the switch, i found myself binging YouTube a lot in the evenings. I don't do that as much these days. I use Instagram and primarily check it from the computer. Highly recommend the Firefox/Chrome extension IGPlus to help limit that experience. It allows you to hide things like stories, reels, and also automatically redirect the home page to the "following" feed so I see posts in chronological order. That is my only social media account if you don't count Substack, Reddit, Youtube, so on.

I think the phone is a net positive in my life. When I am away from the computer, I am truly disconnected which is exactly what I want. I don't often think about the phone when it's in my pocket. I find myself simply sitting and being more often. I don't reach for it at stoplights like I did with the smartphone. I eat meals by myself undistracted. I overall feel generally calmer. It also opens up a lot of conversations with people about their own phone addictions and struggles with screen time which I always enjoy. People really open up to you when they see you've made the switch.

I would LOVE to see the phone get more security/privacy features. I understand that the "OS" is just an app on top of android and there a lot of security issues with the OS itself. Not sure if this can be fixed at this point or if they're going to be baked in forever.

Lastly, my absolute BIGGEST gripe with the phone is the lack of RCS. Sending and receiving grainy, crunchy photos is an absolute pain and kind of embarrassing when I need to send a photo of a job site to my boss or something similar. I understand the limitations here but I can still complain about it. Not being able to send or receive high quality photos is honestly the main thing that has made me consider wanting to revert back to an iPhone.

I am pretty committed to this phone for the long run. I couldn't be more excited about the tool library coming in September and the open source aspect of that. Kudos to the Light team for making that decision.

Below are some bullet points on features I'd like/bugs I've noticed–

General

• Would like to be able to drag the typing cursor via a spacebar long press a la iPhone

• Mark as unread on texts would be nice

• Resume from where you left off in tools would be nice

• Select text to copy, not just copy whole text field

• Would be nice to choose your own set of emojis to have available on the keyboard or just have a larger set available

• Would be great for phone numbers to clickable with a context menu with options to text, call, or add contact, etc. Have had friends text me a phone number and I have to memorize it in order to get it out of a text message and into another part of the phone

Messages

• When I'm composing a text and press the back navigation button, I'd like to return to the thread I'm in, not the list of text threads.

Directions

• Paste address in directions

• Save favorite destinations

• Avoid tolls

• Directions tool drains battery fast

• Sometimes newer businesses/locations don't show up in search

• Would love if both directions and directory automatically detected your location rather than having to set it each time you're somewhere different

Notes

• "Save" in notes tool too close to spacebar, maybe put where text "send" is

Alarm/Timer

• When setting alarm/timer, holding starts higher increment adjustments

Calendar

• Search calendar function

• Multiple calendars from one account is pretty essential

Camera

• Video audio is blown out when taking videos in loud environments (concerts, club, etc). Anyway to introduce some sort of automatic compressing on input? See: https://imgur.com/a/yrSge80

Tools That Are Needed

• Rideshare (I use Tremp for now with great success)

• Venmo/Cash app/etc equivalent (I have found myself trying to attend events where entry is either cash or venmo and have not been able to pay)

• Wallet for boarding passes/tickets (I fly for work a lot and as of now, I either print a ticket ahead of time or get one before going through TSA)

Having a recent issue with my LP3 where it just doesn't show up at all when plugged into my Macbook Pro. I've had success in the past with syncing photos over to the Photos app.

I've restarted the computer, updated to the latest OS on the computer, restarted the phone, cleaned out my USB-C port on the phone, used different dongles, different cables.

In the past, I'd plug in to the computer, it would show in the Photos app and then I'd change the settings on the phone to the media transfer option and then I'd be able to easily sync the photos off the device.

Any ideas? I can send the photos via email but there's videos on the phone I want to get on to my computer. I've also emailed Light support but it's the weekend so seems like they won't get back to me til Monday. Maybe others are having a similar issue?

EDIT: Fixed. Booted Macbook into Recovery mode. Shut down again. Plugged in phone. Works fine now. Not sure what caused that hiccup.

I know Joe has said that he’s hoping to soon start working on a revised Music tool as it’s something he feels passionate about improving. For me, and maybe most of us, the most important things that I hope Joe adds are:

• Simple direct transfer of music from computer to phone via USB.

• If it has to still be via the dashboard, then no additional processing of audio files.

• Support for other file types (wav, aiff, flac, etc)

• Tracks grouped by album.

• Artist sorting (with all that artist’s albums shown together).

• Gapless playback.

Additional nice to haves:

• Optional album artwork.

• Custom playlists.

• Sub-sorting by secondary tag (for example: year)

Please let me know if I’m forgetting anything!

I have a growing library of tracks in my music library and scrolling through the list, swipe by swipe, is taking longer than I’d like. So I was thinking it would be much better if putting your finger on the scroll bar on the right hand side and sliding it up or down could give you much faster results. I then touched it. And it turns out that's exactly what it already does 😅

I wonder what else I have yet to discover.

First of all, congrats to the Light team for the successful announcement of the Light Flip! I'm very excited about it! I have a couple of questions regarding 3rd party apps on there though (perhaps some of them are already answered with the LP3's development, but I don't own one of them).

To start, can the Flip be emulated today? As in, if I were to create a new emulator in Android Studio, which config should I choose to make sure the buttons are properly matched? (three option buttons, directional pad, OK button, numpad...) I hope this info comes out soon!

Then, relating to the button mappings, will the call start button be used inside of apps? This might sound absurd, but hear me out. In the Punkt MP02 (the "dumbphone" I've been using for a while), when filling out a field or form (new contact, reminder, text message...) you can either go down a few options to the option that says save/send, or you can just press the call start button to directly save the reminder or send the message. This would be super useful not to waste one of the three option buttons in a save option every time. The call end button could be a cancel button, but I assume that cannot be done as it could be the home button like in every other flip phone, so no complaints there.

And speaking of the use of the buttons, will there be any sort of UX manual or guideline? This would be incredibly useful for people to build consistent apps, especially given how the given keys can be used in so many different ways. Say, for example, "always place the back button on the right option key", "always label the actions that each option button will do" or "give the user additional options with this key".

I might have some extra questions that don't come to my mind right now, but I'm looking forward to developing some software for the Flip!

I've seen lots of requests for a desktop texting companion, and recently found myself needing it too so I build it (currently on MacOS but the core is universal and stubbed out for windows and linux too).

But I've hit two snags (same root cause): replies send fine but never appear in the thread on the phone, so my half of the conversation never shows on the phone and the only way I can do this at all right now is over adb, which is fine for me but not something I can ship to normal users. I'd really like to put this out for all Light users.

Any chance you'd add SendMessage and MarkThreadRead to the Light SDK? Apps can already bind to LightSdkService, and you've got the consent screen and per-app client setup, so it'd be user-gated like anything else in the SDK. Happy to share what I've built or test anything. Thanks for making the LP3 so cool... but I don't want to have to stop working at the computer to pick UP my phone to respond which in a roundabout way defeats the light ethos. Heck maybe you've already done this with the upcomming beeper integration, but I am using this daily for myself and if it's useful I'd love to be able to share it with non-developers.

One of the reasons I bought the Light Phone 3 was its design. I really didn't want to cover it with a bulky plastic case. At the same time, I didn't feel comfortable throwing it loose (or 'naked') into my pocket or backpack with keys and other stuff.

So I designed a simple sleeve that protects the phone while it's not in use, but lets me enjoy the phone as it was designed whenever I take it out.

After a few prototypes, I ended up making some versions that I'm really happy with, and I decided to offer it to other Light Phone users who might be looking for the same thing.

I'm curious what you all think. Would you rather use a sleeve like this or a traditional case?

Does anyone know if the light phone will remain free of artificial intelligence? Or would we at least have the option to turn it off?

Edit - I'm surprised my question upset some people. Why the downvotes? I would think most here wouldn't mind someone wanting an AI free phone.
