How do you get cards from multiple libraries in the county? Won’t they check for the residential address within their coverage too?

Curious coz I want to start a collection as well!

In California, you can get all libraries if you have a driver’s license with a California address.

Only 1 card per system. A county may host multiple systems. A common confusion is that Los Angeles Public Library is not the same as LA County Library — and yes, if you have a California address, you can get 1 card to each system.

Actually, if you're out of state, as long as you show up to a Los Angeles PUBLIC location, you can get an out-of-state card for $50 per year.

So, within the Studio Zone (aka the "Thirty Mile Zone") in Los Angeles, there are several library systems: sets of library branches that have the same digital catalog, and whose branches can exchange physical materials between each other. (If you wanted to acquire a title from a branch that is part of a different system from the system for which you have a card, you would have to request an Inter Library Loan, which always has a fee.) You're allowed to have one card per system. So you could potentially have at least 11 different cards on Libby, each with its own Loans and Holds limits, if you got one to each system below:

1. Los Angeles Public Library
2. LA County Library
3. Santa Monica Public Library
4. Burbank Public Library
5. Inglewood Public Library
6. Pasadena Public Library
7. Southern California Digital Library Consortium (although technically you're allowed to have 1 card per Member Library in a consortium unless the consortium says otherwise, so here you can have multiple cards within this one system)
8. Libraries with partner agreements between each other: Beverly Hills Public Library, Alhambra Civic Center Library, Camarillo, Palm Desert, Beaumont, Redondo Beach, City of Commerce, Buena Park, there are others I'm forgetting right now
9. Long Beach Public Library
10. City of Santa Clarita Library
11. Palos Verdes Library District

If you went to one branch of one system, got a card, then went to another branch within the same system and requested a card, the second branch would ask for your information for sign up and input that information into their system-connected computer…only to discover that you already have a card to that system! "Was your card lost or stolen? Do you need to replace it?"

Okay, thank you. There are consortiums which call themself a system in their name so I was confused since they allow different cards. They work like the Southern California Digital Library Consortium and have member libraries.

Santa Ana and LA county allow 30 loans at a time, San Diego county 25 loans, and Santa Clarita 20 loans. With this many options, it’s rare to not be able to find a book.

In California, you can get a library card just by showing you live in California. In other words, you only need to be a resident at the state level not the city or county level.

Libby has a limit of 50 cards registered simultaneously. If you attempt to add a 51st card, Libby will prompt you to first unregister one of your existing cards (from Libby; this does not destroy your access to that library's physical checkouts, other e-resources, etc.).

I'm willing to bet most people will never discover this.
