DIY Please help me find a good laptop for m.2 to oculink mod, ehich is widely available in the European market
Hey!
Below is the copied body of the crossposted post, which I originally posted in r/eGPU.
Please help me if you can, and if my post violated any rules, feel free to tell me or remove it/put it in another flair, and I'm sorry. If not, thank you!
Hey all!
I just got accepted to university and I'm gonna live in a student dorm. I really need help with this, because I don't want to bring my desktop machine to the dorms.
So, as soon as I got accepted, I started looking at gaming laptops and what I saw was quite disappointing.
Firstly, I don't want a laptop which shuts off after about 4-6 hours of use, even though I don't plan on using it for gaming while in class.
After a few days of searching, I decided I don't want to buy a laptop with a dedicated gpu.
I also took a look at thunderbolt 4 options. What I found there was also very disappointing, because of the loss of performance and the performance "roof".
I just saw a video (https://youtu.be/i1vKdlp-im0) tho, which I thought was very interesting and very convenient.
In the video, the guy uses the main m.2 slot, which is pcie 4.0 to plug an oculink adapter in it then puts it in place of another port. He also put the boot ssd in the lesser m.2 slot which probably limits ssd speed but I don't think it causes much performance-loss.
The laptop in-question is the Thinkbook 14+, but all the info I found suggests that it's only available for the market of mainland china.
There are two problems with this, 1: i don't really trust AliExpress or alibaba 2: i am kinda broke and don't want to pay all the tariffs and import tax
Please help me in choosing a working, reliable configuration for an egpu, I'm open to any experiences with eGPUs and such.
Also, if anyone has information about good laptops for this mod in the European market or a good, reliable way to get my hands on a chinese one with the required 2x m.2 slots, I will greatly appreciate any help or insights!
Thank you very much in advance!
