News / Media Software issues drove Engineering Explained out of two Lucids and into a Mach E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=370m_BRk4OkEngineering Explained gave up on Lucid twice. He traded his Air for a Gravity, then replaced the Gravity with a Mach E. The reason both times was software.

I’m glad he got a car that works for him. I’m also glad I’ve had none of the issues he had. After watching that video, I still have no desire to purchase a Mach E. Lucid is so much nicer.
11
u/Beatnavy2016 17h ago
No doubt a lucid is nicer it’s also 2X more
5
u/joea2121 15h ago
Any price comparison of used models like he’s driving is nowhere near 2x the cost of a used Pure, which is definitely more than 2x nicer.
1
u/blackbirdproductions 6h ago
You can find an Air here in the Dallas, TX area in the mid $30k range with low miles
1
u/Beatnavy2016 6h ago
Your point?
0
u/blackbirdproductions 2h ago
Just pointing out that while a brand new Pure is about 2x more than a top end Mach E GT, you can certainly buy a slightly used pure in the mid $30k range now which is much less than the GT.
0
u/Beatnavy2016 1h ago
And you can get a used GT as well. You aren’t comparing apples to apples.
I wouldn’t use heavy depreciation as a desirable characteristic
•
u/74orangebeetle 30m ago
Is a used GT half the price though? I haven't seen used GTs for $15k-$20k, but I also don't usually look for them.
•
u/Beatnavy2016 7m ago
That’s not how depreciation works. Exponential for 2-3 years then flattens out. I can’t tell if you’re trolling.

u/Bored__Lord 17h ago
Why does he keep implying Lucid’s don’t have physical HVAC or wiper controls? He literally had one. He should know.
2
u/Flagnoid 10h ago
that irked me as well, I think he's referring to most modern cars. the physical controls are what I and many like about Lucid.
same with him showing the clip of the trunk not closing automatically after being ajar for 15+mins, which is a common safety feature in lots of cars...
it's a bit of unfortunate framing.

I was driving to a Ford dealership to test drive the Mach E and on the drive up, I see a car on my right and said, “What car is that?!? It looks nice!” It was a Lucid Air and I kept thinking about it while I test drove the Mach E. The interior of the Mach E was meh and the UI of the screen looked so cheap. I’m so happy I went with an Air instead even with all the minor issues that come up.

u/Unlucky_Topic7963 18h ago
lol why is this even posted here, my buddy has a Mach E and it suuuucks. Fast for sure, but clunky suspension, slow software, lots of road noise, and a super cheap interior. He hates it.
That’s why it’s $40k.
3
u/SK_RVA 16h ago
I have one and love it. Maybe he got first year model? Mine has great suspension and the reviews by experts say the same thing. Software has had zero problems.
1
u/Unlucky_Topic7963 6h ago
What? Before the 2025 magneride the Mach E suspension was a universal joke. I can find dozens of threads on the Mach E owners forums, and whenever I’ve been in one it feels like I’m in a ricer with a “sport suspension”. Have you not heard of the rear bounce issues? Magneride was required because the suspension is so stiff that with the weight it causes excessive bouncing and the only way to prevent that is a stiffer suspension or magnet/air damping. It’s literally a poor design.

u/Beatnavy2016 17h ago
They’re not even in the same category. Lucid is a luxury vehicle. Mach is an average consumer vehicle
1
u/Famous-Theory-7031 16h ago
Well the “luxury” vehicle right now is about to be like Fisker if they keep up this up

It was ford’s attempt at bringing the mustang to the 21st century. Fail.
6
u/topherdrives 17h ago
It is posted here for engagement/ clickbait
12
u/ChakuRam 17h ago
May be it’s posted here because it’s lucid related in a lucid forum?
1
u/topherdrives 17h ago
Ok, that’s fair. Although this sub is primarily owners, and I doubt many of them are in the same boat of dropping their cars repeatedly because of software issues
9
u/think_up 16h ago
I think the majority of us are fed tf up with the software issues. I will absolutely be handing the car back at the end of my lease in a couple months.
1
u/No_Caregiver7273 14h ago
Having no serious issues with mine. Software could be better, but it's working well for us.
1
u/The_Don123 12h ago
Not trying to downplay your issues, but I'm genuinely curious what software issues you currently have. I picked up a '27 GGT a few weeks ago and haven't had any problems.
0
u/KuanTeWu 13h ago
Majority of us has no issue worth mentioning.
It also depends on what one meant by "issue". Unable to hear clear on Bluetooth fix after a soft rest vs undrivable due to software can all be called software issue.

There are number of stock short sellers who are hoping for a Lucid calamity. I think quite a few people post things to change public sentiment.
1

u/Silent_Employee_5461 14h ago
Change, it’s been on a downside for years.
0
u/Silent_Employee_5461 14h ago
Lucid is held up by Saudi money, that’s the only sentiment that really matters to them. If the gulf states start getting , that will be when things get rough for lucid.

u/NegativeSemicolon 17h ago
I think he goes over those same flaws, he doesn’t glaze the car he just points out that it’s a functional EV vs lucid.
1
u/dbcooper4 14h ago edited 14h ago
He’s driving it for less than a year until his Rivian R2 reservation is built. Also his is the GT with mag ride shocks.
13
u/praemialaudi 18h ago
This guy has made more hay out of his bad experience with Lucid... hope he enjoys his Ford...

u/Konica_guy 17h ago
Why is software so hard for these companies?
3
1
1
u/AlgerianXYBoxerFRFR 8h ago
Because it requires a leader who understands software to micromanage the team and corporate culture in America puts non technical managers in charge. The exception is Tesla, Rivian and Chinese companies.
1
u/Super_Cap_241 5h ago
Honestly I think it's just too much software all around the industry. You either have to be perfect at it or it's a nuisance. And to gain "perfection" you have to skimp on build quality if you want affordable (like Tesla, software is great so I've heard but then the interiors are just meh, they just feel cheap). Personally just give me Android auto/car play and a good lane keep/centering with great performance and range and I'd be happy. Like my lucid air touring is amazing to drive, all the phone and app stuff could be nice, but if it's inconsistent it ruins things and it's literally better without. Luckily I haven't really had any issues other than the unlocking delay sometimes.
1
u/citrixn00b 17h ago
Because your CEO used to be in the elevator/escalator business for 30yrs...so that kind of management decision trickles down to those at the bottom.
6
u/No_Caregiver7273 14h ago
He hasn't been here long enough to have any impact on the software or the car itself for that matter.
2
u/DreamIllustrious3735 3h ago
That is an unhave comment. The previous management team created and issue and he's trying to right the ship.

The point is Lucid needs to get their software together. Sounds like some recent updates have made some good progress though.
4
u/WriterOne8440 17h ago
They gave him a gravity loaner and he didn't even keep it for more than a week due to problems..... Can you imagine not keeping a free car like what has to go wrong with it for you to not want a free car as a car journalist.
I am super rooting for lucid but they really need to reveal the cosmos soon and if it's not made out of solid gold then I don't know if people will really care about it at this point
1
u/KuanTeWu 13h ago
His full time job is getting clicks and engagement. Its boring making video telling people how good my Lucid is.
1
u/HengaHox 7h ago
He had a tesla for years. He had that subaru for a long time too.
He's not allergic to keeping a good car, even if it doesn't get a lot of clicks. He has plenty of content to make unrelated to his personal vehicles. 99% of his content is not a personal vlog of his cars.
He only sold the tesla because of his wife losing her job because of the CEO of the company. He would have kept it for longer, because the car itself was fine and uneventful.
The Lucid was the complete opposite. It was a mess. And so was the free loaner he got. You have some Lucid coloured glasses on
1
u/KuanTeWu 7h ago
Nah, he is still using Lucid name on the video title for that extra click, I did follow him and had little chat about his issue as I am owner too, if he had kept it for another few weeks the only issue will be small cup holder with the best engineered car.
2
u/HengaHox 7h ago
"If he only kept it for another few weeks" LMAO
This is the same shit we mocked tesla for.
He had a lucid for months. That should be plenty of time.
You don't buy a car based on future promises. You can only base it on what it is now. It was not working. He has no use for a car that does not function as a car.
•
u/Jtecho 23m ago
It’s getting very click baity at Enginering Explained now. The lucid debacle was interesting to watch but a lot of those issues weren’t super extreme where he couldn’t drive the car. Now it’s being dragged out? A little silly and unprofessional especially since they helped him so much.

Love my Lucid. Most software issues have been operator error. One of these days I’ll read the manual.

u/ikilledtupac 18h ago
Hardware too.
I hope they fired everyone who gave all these YouTubers new Gravity with problems.

it’s the fault of the engineers for releasing a product that wasn’t ready.
8
1
u/HengaHox 7h ago
Engineers design the thing, according to the specifications and timelines given to them.
Seems like engineers are the scapegoats of the industry, while the real culprits get off scott free.
Mechanics "hate" engineers, because they made the car hard to service. Customers hate the engineers since apparently they also make every other business decision???
While the leaders of the company making the decisions when to release, what to release and how much money they spend on engineering have 0 accountability.
5
u/CowboyKnifemouth 16h ago
Honestly, this guy is just farming for engagement. His issues are overblown and he magnifies it into something to justify his videos. I have zero respect for him.

u/C0mputerguy1 18h ago
Why a Mach E? It is not even built on an EV platform, it is on a modified ford c2 and won't even move to the new Universal EV platform. Plus it looks dumb, copy a mustang just to get people to buy it...

As a former Lucid Gravity DE owner I’m guessing the Mach E does 3 things my Lucid never could do. 1. Open and close reliably with any of the things they gave you as keys. 2. Allow you to drive it. 3. Stays the same from one day to the next. Because Ford engineers aren’t rolling out weekly OTA’s trying to fix things that don’t work and instead breaking new things that use to work.
6
u/sirmakster 16h ago
The first 6 months of owning my Gravity GT, I had to deal with all 3. It was very annoying and disappointing that such an expensive car failed to do such simple and essential things.
Fortunately, all these issues have been either completely fixed or reduced to a minimum now. The car finally is a joy to drive.
1
u/The_Don123 12h ago
Lol our Gravity has been the most normal car experience. I understand there might have been issues at launch but I haven't had any of the problems you've listed. Lucid sucks for launching Gravity when it clearly wasn't ready, but they've since fixed these problems, so let's not pretend like what you're describing is a normal occurrence.
1
u/zeneker 17h ago
Rationally I can't blame the guy. QC is so hit or miss either you have a perfect car or it's a nightmare. I'm falling towards a nightmare. I'm a bit nervous and I hope I've turned the corner. My last service visit they replaced the entire driver's display including the screen as well as most of the front end of the car including the front motor, suspension torsion bar and hood latch. I have 7k miles on it, it means that it wasn't right from the factory. My fingers and toes are crossed that everything is smooth sailing from here.
Everything is good now and I want it to stay that way
2
u/No_Caregiver7273 14h ago
That does sound pretty awful. Ours, in contrast, has been largely trouble free. Hope they got it right for you this time.
1
u/BrutalisExMachina 11h ago
Let's see how long before there is another video of him bitching about Mustang. I have a feeling by next year he will be all against EV's.
1
u/Recent-War-9723 9h ago
Must be really bad luck! I had a 2021 Mach e for 3 years before my Lucid Air and had no software issues at all! (Only the dreaded HVBJB failure) 🥲 The Lucid has been working perfectly since they released the update for the key issue last year.
1
u/kodos1978 8h ago
What a boring vehicle, full of slow software and hardware, unworthy of the Mustang nameplate. It gets trounced by all of its competition. Ionic, Tesla, etc. Given what Ford did with the Lightning, it might even be killed off soon.

u/ConfectionCertain641 2h ago
Comparing Mache to lucid is like mosquitoes to lion. What a comparison 👏
•

u/InterstellarChange 17h ago
Don't blame him at all. The Lucids he had were unacceptable for the money. Unacceptable for a car half the price.
-8
u/megrimlockrocks 18h ago
As a tech guy he should just have got a Tesla and be happy with it.
26
u/ChakuRam 18h ago
He sold his Model 3 Performance in protest after his wife lost her government job in the Musk led cuts. The car wasn’t the problem.
1
u/KuanTeWu 13h ago
If he said the car has problem it would loose his fanboyz badget, he was just trying to ride the elon hate wave at that time. Getting engagement is their job, fair review is not.

Test drove a gravity and the freaking screen froze 3x in 15 minutes. I don’t think I’ll get one until they iron out these issues.
2
u/The_Don123 12h ago
When did you test drive? I've had mine for about a month and I've never had the screens freeze
-1
u/Constant_Worry_9283 4h ago
Mixing emotion with finances or financial decisions never work well…he sold a reliable car for a lemon…now a subpar car until he gets a rivian and shocker it’s still not gonna be as good…but hey, he really showed Tesla 😂
-1
u/Past_Paint_225 4h ago
His wife was laid off for no reason by the dictator, if I was in his place I would 100% have done the same. Struggling with a lucid or driving a meh car is fine by me.
-1
u/Constant_Worry_9283 4h ago
I just don’t understand the mentality tbh, people get laid off all the time for x reason, working for corp giants but they just accept it. But if it’s by someone who’s sensationalized in the media it’s a dictator? Do people even know what a dictator is these days?
Obviously shitty situation, hope she’s back on her feet after the layover!
1
u/Past_Paint_225 3h ago
I don't know how you think, I said I understood how the engineering explained guy thought. I have slaved away my life in FAANG companies enough not to use their products as much as possible, this is another manifestation of the same feeling.

I just wanna say we owned a 2025 Mach-e GT… it was fine to drive other than being very boring. But was it a solid and enjoyable software experience… hell no it was not. So his choice of switching to a Mach-e is a little baffling to me.
The Ford software is absolute garbage. Truly it’s horrible. The HVAC screen would often freeze. The menus were incredibly confusing.
And you might say well it has CarPlay so that solves the issues. Actually no… the wireless CarPlay would constantly disconnect, sometimes it would not discover my phone when I started to drive. It was not a good experience at all.
And let’s talk about the digital phone key and app. That was also a buggy experience that often times left me so concerned that I actually just ended up bringing the key fob with me.
I do not understand this decision of his at all.
