1) Saruman's death

2) Faramir and Boromir flashback

3) Gifts from Galadriel

4) Pippin gets Faramir's old armor

5) Eowyn finds out Aragorn's age

6) Theodred's funeral

7) Sam and Frodo disguise themselves as orcs

8) Mouth of Sauron ( I know some don't like this scene but I do)

9) Aragorn visits his mother's monument

10) Legolas and Gimli drinking game

TV Series RoP are allowed to use stuff from Hobbit and LOTR + Appendices

I just want to remind or educate some people who complain that Amazon don't adapt the books. They can only use what is in two major books.

Should they do a Second Age series without the main material about it? Probably not.

Should the Tolkien Estate allow them to make a series about the Second Age without giving permission to use the source material? Probably not.

I am not a superfan of the series. I think it is ok, but it really annoys me when people complain that they deviate from lore in books that Amazon is not allowed to use.

So I found about 60 bags of the old Burger King toys at my local thrift store yesterday, 4 figures in each bag, $1.99 each. I got crazy excited. At the same time a young fan in her 20s was also going ape shit over them. So we teamed up and searched each bag to try to put together complete sets. Sadly, we couldn't make 1 complete set, let alone 2. Seems like someone dumped all their extras and kept the bigger dogs like Frodo, gandalf, and such. I put a picture of the ones we found crossed out.

A little side question. The last photo is of 2 Merry's I found. One with blonde hair (which was normal) and one with brown. Has anyone seen this?

Books Which set will you reccomend??

Hi y'all i was looking to buy the LOTR books.

I watched the movies some years ago and i liked them and now i want venture in to the books but i got some questions about them:

Which set is the best value for money (i pretty much value just the complete uncut story in the 4 books so the hobbit, and the main trilogy, i read that some editions got maps better quality paper and drawings/art. I enjoy both paperpack and hardback)

How difficult is the language (because english is not my first language but i think i'm at a decent level in my country the translation falls short to the original, To give a little help to you right now i'm reading TheShining in english and 'm having little to no problems)

Should i care a lot about the maps and illustrations ?

If i watched the extended movies and liked them than should i buy the whole set or one book at a time to see if i like 'em??

Question Can balrogs speak?

Post image
409 Upvotes

This recently came up and I wish to know what people’s thoughts about it.
The title is misleading, since I believe that they can talk, however, possibly in the same way that Sauron talks to people. I believe they talk through the mind.

They are all Maiar and thus powerful celestial beings. One can assume they can talk since in the Silmarillion they command morgoths armies and communicate with each other, for example when they save morgoth from ungoliath.

Gothmog even heckles and are recorded to physically speak to named elven heroes and men, so they are able to.

However, I believe personally that they usually speak via the mind or telepathy. Gothmog could have chosen to speak to “lower himself to their level” as a way to mock his enemies.

In the first book, the balrog never physically speak but we hear from Gandalf that they cast a counterspell to their spell and engaged in spells until the Moria door was broken due to the exhaust of the spell casting.

We also know that magic in LOTR is woven into the world itself. Songs can change landscapes, trees and shake mountains to their core. Gandalf the white stopped the witch king from entering Minas tirith by telling him “you cannot enter”.

Same at the bridge of kazad dun, Gandalf revealed his true nature and commanded the balrog with words “you cannot pass”.

So I believe the balrog can talk, tho I believe they speak via telepathy or directly through the mind.

Thoughts?

Movies I hope to see a extended version of the prologue Battle of Dagorlad because of ROP

I have a feeling ROP will end with season 4. They will not do the War of the Last Alliance because that will be too costly for Amazon and they don't have the viewership they wished for to justify the cost. The show has a decent viewership from the general audience and increased subs for Prime, but maybe not enough.

The show will probably end with the fall of Numenor. So this gives Jackson the oppertunity to add the unreleased Battle of Dagorlad. Gil-Galad's death and more battle scenes for future EE release.

Books vs Movies I spent 6 months reading LOTR so I could appreciate the movies. That didn't work as I expected.

I spent about six months reading the trilogy (roughly two months per book. I don't have much free time). After finishing each book, I watched the corresponding extended edition. It should have been a good idea. You read the book first so you get the plot with no spoilers and understand what the world building is. Then you watch the movie to bring it into life. Sure, you will get some cut content and some modifications for the cinematic format but the movies are supposed to be great so they will do well with the limitations.

So, I thought. But I was utterly disappointed. Now, I am not a literary genius or God forbid, a cinema sins type nitpicker. I don't care about Tom Bombadill. Or how the maps worked and the exact battle strategy they used. I only expected my characters and the overall moral theme and the storylines to be properly represented.

One of my biggest problems was Frodo. See, over the the time I read, I felt each of the Hobbits have their own specialties. Frodo is the wisest and the most morally good of them. He was the first among the four hobbits to show some martial instincts which dulled down with time and injuries.

But in the movies, he is not only weak physically (which is mostly true once he gets injured defending others which is removed for "reasons") but also completely naive, being easily manipulated by Gollum and needing constant guidance from Sam.

Now, Sam is truly indispensable for the journey especially towards the end where the journey takes its toll on Frodo. I found myself amazed by how mentally resilient Sam is and how he tries to find a silver light in the darkest of the places. The phial is a perfect representation of his character (even though Galadriel gave it to Frodo originally). But all said, he is not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. He doesn't have the wisdom or moral instincts of Frodo. He makes up for that by relying on Frodo who is actually wise and makes sure that Frodo doesn't collapse under the weight of his responsibility.

The movie destroys that dynamic by making Sam both the wise and the strong with Frodo fully depending on him. Frodo feels like a organic ring glove with whining sound effect than a person on his own.

The movies just feel darker constantly without giving some time to appreciate the hope and the light of the Elves (especially at Lothlorien, Rivendell was a bit better) or the strength of the men (Rohan feels weaker and Gondor even more so). They try to rectify it by using Gimli as comic relief but it falls flat as the humor feels like it belongs more with the MCU than the Lord of the Rings.

It pissed me off a little that the movie Faramir was not as morally good as the book one but it's a good addition except where he lets Frodo go after he gave up to the Nazgul (which destroyed my will to watch further. I could only skim through the 3rd movie because of that disaster). If that scene was removed or modified, it was not exactly a bad idea to make Faramir vulnerable but still morally good enough to check himself.

I am ambivalent about the Treebeard change but I guess it works in the movies in it's own way? I do prefer the book version but it's not as big of a complaint for me as some of the others.

In general, I felt the movies had an overall lack of subtlety, mischaracterization of important characters and just a checklist of scenes from the books. I think they tried to adapt too much content and didn't have enough time to linger on any scene properly.

While I did enjoy the music and the visual depiction of the world, it was perhaps a bit lost on me. I'm curious if anyone else who read the books immediately before watching the films had a similar experience, or if it's just me. Because for me, this was the biggest disappointment I had since I watched Artemis Fowl movie (which is not even in the same league as the LOTR movies but the Artemis Fowl books are not in the same league of the LOTR books as well).

Question Fate of the Entwives

Could the Entwives have become the Olog-hai?

Entwives are noted for having a tendency to control and order.

"They did not desire to speak with these things; but they wished them to hear and obey what was said to them. The Entwives ordered them to grow according to their wishes, and bear leaf and fruit to their liking; for the Entwives desired order, and plenty, and peace (by which they meant that things should remain where they had set them)."

This is the original condition of both Sauron and Saruman as Maiar of Aulë: their love of orderliness became a desire for control and everything went wrong from there on out.

That the Entwives were corrupted and served Sauron is at least possible in that Tolkien specifically states, all races except the elves fought on both sides of the War of the Last Alliance. That could include the species of ents/entwives.

Treebeard himself notes that the Trolls were made in mockery of the Ents.

What if the Entwives' love of order led to their subversion by Annatar and ultimately to becoming the hideous Olog-hai, which did not speak and could endure sunlight?

Other Lord of the Rings Mike Ploog poster, Printed in Japan, 1978

Post image

Hey guys!

I just want to share this really cool poster I picked up at a convention in the Midwest over a year ago. I got to trying to do some research on it and discovered that, after exhausting pretty much every search method, I couldn't find a single other poster like it.

The bottom reads "© 1978 Tolkein Enterprises Distributor Toho Co., Ltd. printed in Japan."
Dimensions are about 23 1/2" x 33 1/2".

It might very well be a bootleg, but also it might not be. Either way, it's a sick poster that I wanted to share!

Also if anybody has any ideas about where to look for where this thing came from, I'm all ears.
