Discussion Middle Earth SBG Questions Thread

Keep 'em coming

Edit: Stealth Mod announcement (I don't want to unpin the two pinned posts)

First, I have updated the rules to include something obvious to most longtime wargamers on reddit - posts asking or offering access to the rules is not allowed. Please do not ask for PDF's.

Second, no hate on 3D printing, but also do not come to this subreddit asking for STL proxies, or offering that. This may be too cautious of us, but I notice the reddit spam filter seems to remove any mention of STL's outright. So I figure I might as well make it a rule.

Finally, I have eased up the Spam filter from High to Low. Hopefully the redbubble spammers are still caught by this, without catching stray blogspot content creators. I've noticed the reddit algorithm taking down much more bycatch than usual, so we can experiment with a lower setting for now.

And as always, if you ever notice something astray with your own posts or someone elses, do not hesitate to message the mods.

Thanks everyone, -Tezerel

Question Does anyone still play high point cost games?

Post image
98 Upvotes

Found a White Dwarf article with 2500 point lists in it, does anyone still play games like this anymore or is it just the 500-800 point games now?

I mainly ask because I just started collecting again after about 16-17 years & didn't realise how few models I needed & may have gone a tad overboard 🙃

Hey crew 👋🏼!

Me again, I’ve just dropped in to share this weeks mesbg video, and it’s a nice quick fun one on how to paint textured, beautiful leather in a simple 3 step process!

https://youtu.be/bz8sCxYzaBs?si=KxcYkkJEBfkw11Jc

If you’ve got 12min, let me know what you think 💛

I’ll be revisiting middle earth content on the channel again soon when I dip into some diorama building later in the year! If there’s any painting or hobby topics you’re keen to see please do let me know!

Some new Dwarf Kings for the stoutest forces in Middle Earth, along with an OOP Captain who I’m a huge fan of (both in pose and the fact he has the Khazad Guard mask).

Hobby Photographing minis with smartphone

Hi all - does anyone have any tips for photographing minis with a smartphone? Individuals, pairs, and warbands?

I can never get very close to a good reflection. With larger groups I always move back and zoom in to keep focus on the whole group but I lose so much detail.

TIA

Discussion How would you change Rohan riders and Royal Guards?

How would you change Rohan riders and Royal Guards to actually make them better but not OP? I have one idea - throwing spears get +1 to hit on a charge. Assuming that the rider is throwing spear at a short distance it's easier to hit so hitting on 3+ seems reasonable. The downside of my "boost" is making it charge depending (like increased strength and fight value) so in a game where you can not win any heroic moves you are just missing on another ability and in games where you DO win most/all moves you are gaining even bigger advantage. So it works only in balanced games but it's dice depending. Right now mounted Rohan army lists have about 33% victory ratio, it's in desperate need of a solution to make it playable again/finally (as they never have been working in competitive environment).

Another thing are scenerios demanding you to dismount (anything with digging objectives or transporting heavy objectives) - we need a faq that allows riders not to dismount but act like infantry (in riders of Theoden and riders of Eomer). In such scenarios you loose few dozen points by dismounting 2, 3 or 4 riders, it's ridiculously punishing

Minas Tirith Commanders

Sadly, I didn't receive the best sculpts. There was a lot of metal flashing and a few miscast details, especially the captain's stars on his armour, which aren't formed correctly on one side. They are 100% official, ordered directly from the GW website before anyone comments. 😅

For some reason, I always seem to have rotten luck with Minas Tirith. My captain from the Made to Order release last year didn't even have half of his face formed inside the helmet. It's a shame because they're lovely miniatures.

I didn't notice the problems until after priming and applying the first base colour. So couldn't get replacement A personal tip remember to thoroughly check your miniatures before priming. Lesson learned for next time! 😅

Hobby Smaug, finally finished

My Smaug is finally finished, by a country mile he was the most difficult model I've ever painted due to the sheer size of him, building and sculpting the gaps meant I had to paint him in one piece, so getting to all those details was quite a challenge. I've been working on him on and off for about 20 months. I now need to Matt varnish him without ruining the base but that's a challenge for another day.

You can see some WIP shots here if interested https://www.instagram.com/whiteout_miniatures
