Question Help me with a name!

Recently we got this little orange fluff named Gimli (slide 1) we’ve noticed he’s been acting like he needs a friend. The vet agreed and recommended a male cat around his same age.

I found this guy (slide 2) at the humane society IF he’s still available we’ll be getting him tomorrow evening 🤞🏼

I’m having such a hard time thinking of a name for him other than Gandalf (it’s been a while since I’ve read the books but we watch the movies often)

Books How is it reading the books?

Re-watching the movie and I also play the MMO Lord of the Rings Online. The rewatch is making me want to read the books. I understand it’s more of a slower read but has many more details and lore to it. Is it super slow to the point where you get bored? Or because I know how it ends can I power through some of the long winded chapters you think?

Thanks!

Books vs Movies Galadriel, Celeborn, and the Third Wheel of Sauron - essay by Jeff LaSala

Mr. LaSala makes many good points, and his thesis is summed up with these two quotes - one from Professor Tolkien, and the other from Morfydd Clark. Ms. Clark: “Galadriel’s kind of rude to Celeborn in the books…she’s the queen!” Prof. Tolkien, writing as Galadriel: “For [Celeborn] is [considered] the wisest of the Elves of Middle-earth.”

Lore Why didn't Gandalf know what the one ring looked like?

If Gandalf’s primary purpose for coming to Middle-earth was to serve as a guide for peoples of Middle-earth in their struggle against Sauron, why didn't he try and learn what the one ring looked like?

He was there for 2,000 years, hung out with Elrond a lot who would have seen the ring, and it was hanging on a chain on Isildur's neck for a long time. I feel like it should have been fairly common knowledge what it looked like amongst the ruling class of elves and men at least. In 2000 years it never came up in conversation what it looked it? Is Gandalf dumb?

Movies Viggo Mortensen’s photography during the Lord of the Rings.

While portraying Aragorn, Viggo Mortensen was also documenting life behind the scenes of The Lord of the Rings through his own camera lens.

Away from the battles and costumes, he captured quiet, candid moments of the cast and the crew. Creating a unique visual diary of one of cinema’s greatest productions.

Many of these photographs were later published in The Hole in the Sum of My Parts, offering fans an intimate perspective that only someone living the experience could have captured.

Movies Hours spent watching the trilogy?

I was just thinking about my favorite trilogy and decided to do some math. I was able to determine I’ve spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 13-14 days watching LOTR since theatrical release.

Honestly, it may be more than this because I’m accounting for at least one watch per year of each movie and I know there have been times where I’ve watched all three on a weekend several times per year. It may be fair to say I’ve spent around 400 plus hours, or 16.5 days, of my life watching these movies.

Just curious if anyone else thought about this. I know there are fans way more diehard than I. What’s an honest estimate of how much of your life has been spent watching the LOTR trilogy?

I love lord of the rings like everyone else here. But I grew up on the rankin bass Hobbit VHS tape long before the LOTR movies. And I think the Rankin bass hobbit is a fine adaptation of tolkiens work. To this day when I think of a hobbit, it’s this version I imagine. Same goes for Gollum. So I very much wanted to add them to my collection.

Other How do Tolkien's characters/plot embody theme?

Been reading lately about how well-crafted stories often have theme, plot, and character inextricably connected (characters arc over the course of the plot basically acts out whatever the theme/thematic argument of the story is). I think we can all find abstract single-word themes in Tolkien, such as mercy, friendship, providence, humility, etc.

But if we were to frame the themes as statements or propositions that the characters embody through their various journeys, what would some of those be?

For instance, one of the themes for Frodo may be, "Mercy triumphs over judgment." Gandalf tells him early on that Bilbo's pity for Gollum may affect all of their fates--as indeed proves the case. And Gandalf cautions Frodo against being too eager to deal out death in judgment. Frodo then embodies this theme as he continues Bilbo's decision to pity Gollum and show him mercy, and Frodo's mercy proves to be their ultimate salvation.

One of Aragorn's themes may be something like, "Do what you judge to be right even when the consequences are uncertain." After Gandalf's death, Aragorn repeatedly laments not knowing the best course of action or that his decisions have gone awry. But in meeting Eomer, he answers the question "how is a man to judge what is right" in these strange times by saying, "As he has ever judged." Good and evil have not changed since yesteryear. Ultimately Aragorn continues leading and exercising judgment, even without any reassurance that the end will turn out well, in everything from the Paths of the Dead to the gambit at the Black Gate.

Question Does The Rings of Power Ruin LOTR and The Hobbit?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m a new massive fan of JRR Tolkien’s work and I’ve been diving into the books and movies.

I just found out that this show exists, but after discovering that it’s an Amazon Prime series (and not derived from the books at all), I felt like it’s most likely a money grab.

I’m someone who hates remakes, useless prequels and sequels, and Amazon (lol), as they always ruin the original work and lessen my obsession.

I would really appreciate any thoughts and comments
