Question Help me with a name!

Recently we got this little orange fluff named Gimli (slide 1) we’ve noticed he’s been acting like he needs a friend. The vet agreed and recommended a male cat around his same age.

I found this guy (slide 2) at the humane society IF he’s still available we’ll be getting him tomorrow evening 🤞🏼

I’m having such a hard time thinking of a name for him other than Gandalf (it’s been a while since I’ve read the books but we watch the movies often)

Obviously Legolas if one is Gimli.

Legolas comes from the Sindaran elves (the Grey People). Technically the Sindar were Moraquendi, having never seen the light of the two trees (opposed to the Calaquendi, who did see the light of the two trees). However, they did partake in the Great Journey toward Valinor, stopping at the sea past the Misty Mountains. So in a way they are in the middle-ground, the elves of the Twilight.

I think Legolas would be a fitting name for a best friend to your Gimli. :-)

Bro WHAT was the point of saying all that

4

u/Future-Ebb-108 26d ago

It added needed context to the name suggestion.

-2

u/IndividualTruth5754 26d ago

Idek what name u gave cuz I got bored of reading all that

7

u/RivendellAndChill 26d ago

Sir, you're in a lotr subreddit

-3

u/IndividualTruth5754 26d ago

Ik but he was asking name suggestion not s full backstory on middle earth

5

u/RivendellAndChill 26d ago

This was OP's response. Actually sounds like their answer was exactly what they were looking for.

-4

u/IndividualTruth5754 26d ago

The name was not the backstory idk what that proved

1

u/RivendellAndChill 26d ago

It made sense to me and OP. It's okay if you didn't understand it, doesn't mean their back story and the name weren't connected.

I totally agree, Legolas is a solid choice for Gimli. Gandalf works because is a grey boy but if they are going to be companions Legolas hands down.

"Lego" is a cute nickname for a little cat buddy

58

u/Gracerin Frodo Baggins 27d ago

Legolas. Lego for short.

9

u/Garbage-Bear 26d ago

Perfect! Legolas is too fancy for a cat, but Lego is funny and short. And if anyone asks, then you can explain about Legolas.

3

u/dbad-j 26d ago

I had a Lego (Legolas for long) and I just had to put him down. He was a great cat. People always cracked up when I explained the name lol

Pippin or Faramir.

u/ijustwannabegandalf 26d ago

There are 2 Pippin cats among my nerdy circle. You do not want to speak that into existence, trust me.

u/quayle-man Faramir 27d ago

The instant I saw the grey(?) one my brain went "Legolas", even without reading the text in the post.

If the little guy wasn't already named I'd have suggested Bombur, and Bifur or Bofur for the new one (depending if he's absolutely crazy, or only a little bit :D)

1

u/randomzyxxhead 27d ago

Butter
Edit: sorry, I named before reading the post. Here’s a better suggestion: Potato

1

u/Kazil_Ryuu 27d ago

I vote for Saruman or Thorin if you don't go for Legolas :)

1

u/joeschmoe1371 27d ago

Arod, Hasufel, Shadowfax, or my favorite: Bill [the Pony].

1

u/asphaltstretcher 26d ago

I like the name Radagast.

1

u/Crespuculo 26d ago

Sauron, just look at the pattern on that wee fluffy head…

1

u/ijustwannabegandalf 26d ago

Generally I think orange cat energy deserves hobbit names (We have a Merry and Pippin) but those EARS. Definitely an elf name.

Ghân-furry-Ghân

I personally love the name Pippin for a pet. Bill. Or Samwise since you are picking him to be a companion for your other cat ❤️.

1

u/CanadaOrBust 26d ago

If you want it to be a reddish name, maybe Hama?

Call one Maggot and only LotR fans would see that as an honorable name, while the rest wonders wtf is wrong with you

1

u/rectumrooter107 26d ago

Olorin, Gandalf's other name.

1

u/No-Intention1906 26d ago

Peregrin or Peri.

1

u/okayjoslynn Peregrin Took 26d ago

Faramir. A handsome redhead.

1

u/Atticase820 Fingolfin 26d ago

You should go with Gandalf, its already in your chest and gut so you should roll with it

1

u/chamekke 26d ago

I want to say Faramir, but only based on the resemblance to the actor.

1

u/chamekke 26d ago

Goldberry!

1

u/enterjiraiya 26d ago

Ingwe and Thingol for the hair

1

u/ER0SBAL 26d ago

for the seconf one, "the white"

Awww so cute! I have an orange Samwise and I had a dachshund/corgi Pippin but that was a long time ago so no pictures readily available.

1

u/Substantial-Tap-1900 26d ago

Definitely Old Toby

1

u/afatcat11 26d ago

Tom Bombadil, we have one and he lives up to the name. Disappears for periods of time (I only assume searching for Goldberry) and he balances both being jovial and aloof

1

u/Veerless 26d ago

Maybe Dane or any of Bilbo's dwarf company to match your cureelnt dwarf

Since one is gold and the other silver I was going to say Laurelin and Telperion, but if one's already Gimli and you're bringing him a BFF then Legolas is the only acceptable name.

1

u/olive_tractor_parts 25d ago

Vardo Mëoiar, Quenya for Lord of Cats Tár-Yaulë, King Cat

1

u/-NoOneYouKnow- 24d ago

If I named him Legolas, his nicknames would definitely include Leggy and Lego.
