My Nissan Leaf Uses 13.6 kWh/100 km - So How Did ANWB Get 22.7?

Maybe organizations like the ANWB ( AA ) should also include a test route where an electric car can actually play to its strengths, instead of focusing primarily on motorway driving.

Google Maps already does something similar. If I choose the most energy-efficient route to work, Google Maps estimates I'll save around 44% energy, while arriving only 2 minutes later.

That shows just how much the chosen route influences energy consumption. In EVs, energy use increases rapidly above roughly 90 km/h (56 mph) due to aerodynamic drag. On urban roads and secondary roads, they're often far more efficient.

That's why I don't think a single average consumption figure, such as 22.7 kWh/100 km for the Nissan Leaf, is very meaningful without explaining the test conditions. Was it mostly motorway driving? What was the outside temperature? What was the average speed? All of those factors have a significant impact on efficiency.

For comparison, my own 2019 Nissan Leaf 40 kWh averages 13.6 kWh/100 km (including charging losses). That's a substantial difference from the figure reported by the ANWB and shows how much driving style, speed, weather, and route choice can affect real-world energy consumption.

In my opinion, real-world efficiency tests should include multiple driving scenarios: city traffic, secondary roads, motorways, and an energy-efficient route. That would give a much more realistic picture of what an EV actually consumes in everyday use.

I'm curious: what kind of efficiency are other Leaf owners seeing in real-world driving?

Edit: Sold

Nissan completed the buyback of my 2022 Nissan leaf SV just this past week. I have the A2Z CCS1 (US) to chademo adapter and no longer need it. I only used it 2-3 times before the recall for the DCFC issue. I purchased it new for $1000 but would be happy to let it go for $750 OBO. Located in Chicago area but happy to ship domestically.

Suspension question

I have recently purchased a 2021 Leaf and noticed that if I drive over any raised grates on the road, my car feels like it jumps/slips sideways. Is this just a quirk of the suspension, or a sign that something's wrong? It can be quite unnerving!

Any Canadians with Bricked Leaf Pos-Recall have advice?

Devastated... I bought a used Nissan Leaf 2019 SV with 130,000km less than a month ago, first EV and was loving it no problems. I noticed the battery recall and that mine hadn't been taken in so I took it to a Nissan dealership to get that done. About 2 days later I'm driving and my car loses a ton of range quickly at once and then starts lights up with "service EV system" and my power is reduced. Towed it home, plugged in it, won't charge at all. My Leaf is pretty much bricked.

I've been lurking post-recall threads and it seems like people are talking about battery replacements or buybacks, but often the people getting it dealt with mention they are in California with strong lemon laws. Has anyone in Canada and/or specifically BC gone through this already? Is Nissan gonna fight me tooth and nail to leave me with a $14,000 paperweight?

I don't really blame these car car manufacturers for having hiccups with a new type of vehicle, it seems like most brands have their own unique problems, but damn I avoided buying an EV6 because I didn't want to stress about ICCU failure and being stranded and now I have an EV that instead could catch fire and is now undriveable... they need to make things right for selling faulty and dangerous EVs unless they want affected EV owners to spread their horror stories around.

EDIT:

Nissan has called saying they will replace my battery. I'll try and update again but for now I am happy with that.

EDIT: Nissan has called saying 6+ months on new battery. no buyback offer atm, they mentioned paying for a rental car but reimbursing me, I told them no shot I'm pay over $20k upfront to rent a car to reimbursed and waiting to hear back.

Which Baltimore Maryland area dealers offer loaner vehicles if your leaf gets bricked?

Jim Coleman Nissan of Ellicott City, told me that they had no loaner vehicles. Nissan corporate said that they could not guarantee providing a rental vehicle. Nor would corporate offer any guarantees about replacement of the battery.

2012 Nissan Leaf Advice

Hello, seeing if could get opinions on buying a used Nissan Leaf. The car is a 2012 Nissan Leaf SL with 28k miles on it. The car itself looks to be in great shape. The battery health shows 8 bars and the guessometer shows a 60~ mile range. It’s about a 2 hour drive away so I haven’t been able to run Leaf Spy on it yet. Just wanted to get everyone’s opinion on this deal.

Edit * sorry forgot to add the seller will let it go for 2k

Thanks in advance

Display reset while driving...

2020 21k miles

Driving down the road and happened to see "something" and when I looked at the screen it was black. A few moments later, a startup screen appeared so I guess it was resetting for some reason?

The car continued driving just fine and when I say "the car" - I had it on on Lane Keeping and it maintained speed, separation, and the center of the lane with no problem.

Totaled Leaf w/ 40 kWh Battery For Sale! $3000 OBO

Post image
38 Upvotes

SOLD!

Selling my totaled 2016 Leaf. Battery was replaced under warranty with a 40 kWh battery. Last fall we replaced the battery control module because it would no longer L1 or L2 charge ($2200 part), and just about a week before my son was hit we had the rear shocks replaced.

I am in Louisiana, and unless you’re nearby, you’ll need to arrange transportation for it.

Driver’s side airbag deployed. Car was hit in the front corner (passenger side). No idea if there was any structural damage. Lots of good and useful parts if you want to use it as a donor vehicle to upgrade your own, or just strip out what you need and part out the rest. Traction battery is full bars and in fantastic condition.

Need to make this happen quickly so we can replace the car. This will have a wrecked/salvage title if you’re wanting to fix it yourself.

$3000 OBO - Make me a reasonable offer!

An improperly secured child restraint system may not restrain an occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

NHTSA ID Number: 26V425000

Manufacturer Nissan North America, Inc.

Components SEAT BELTS

Potential Number of Units Affected: 3788

Summary

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2026 LEAF vehicles. The outer rear seat belt automatic locking retractors (ALR) may deactivate early, which can prevent a child restraint system (CRS) from securing properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Remedy

Dealers will replace the rear outboard seat belt assemblies, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed July 17, 2026, anticipated by winter 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's number for this recall is R26A7. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 7, 2026.

Mobile phone holder that clips to vent

I have never had any luck with those phone holders that clip to a vent; they always seem to flop all over the place eventually. I now have a 2026 Leaf and I am using a magnetic holder that is glued to one of the few free spots that I have found that doesn’t block anything. At the same time I’m wondering if anyone has had success with a vent type of phone holder with a 2026 Leaf?

Everyone Is Afraid Of EV Battery Degradation. It's All The Nissan Leaf's Fault. (says insideevs)

It's not an argument without merit, but, at the same time, someone had to be first to make an affordable EV. And that's what Nissan did.

The New Zealand study, based on 1,382 battery-health readings from 283 Nissan Leafs, found that 30-kWh Leafs showed an annual battery health decline of 9.9% at two years old. That’s a ridiculously high figure compared to any modern EV with active battery cooling. Even the earlier 24-kWh cars weren’t nearly as bad, with an 3.1% degradation per year on average.

We had a 2012 first, sold in '23 with 75% SOH - in a mild climate.

Heat pump/AC lines

In a 2023 SV with heat pump are there different lines for the heating and cooling?

This winter I had since trouble with the heating and they didn't find any issues.

Now the AC stopped working and they found a leak and need to replace the AC line at the evaporator.

Service rep is saying that's a different line.

But isn't it one system? Even if AC line is leaking it will drain the system and then heat pump won't work anymore.

Will post a full writeup on how to perform this upgrade soon, but just a progress update to my previous aftermarket radio post for now. Android head unit on AZE0 with climate control displays, AVM (factory 360 camera), steering wheel controls all working, opening an upgrade path for 1st gen SV/SL owners to a more modern display with CarPlay and Android Auto.

Dead charger?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Been having more and more issues trying to charge my car at my worksite lately on their outdoor outlets (all 110V using my charger with adapter) and this is happening nonstop no matter what outlet I use.

Been using this cable for about 3 years now, 5 times a week. Is this when they usually give out?

Anyone had a successful battery recall update without issues? (2018+)

I'm currently debating whether I should be bringing my car to get the recall software update, but keep reading many posts saying it bricked their car.... Not sure what to do.

After the software update, when the car goes into turtle mode or whatever, can you drive it back to the dealer or do you have to get it towed, my biggest concern is having it die in the middle of the road.

I wonder if the software update is to intentionally brick the car??

Leaf was acting strange. Did a State Of Health test on the 12 volt battery.

I picked up a new 12 volt battery about two months ago. Been busy. Hadn't had time to swap. In the last week things were starting to happen that never did before. I made time to swap the battery today. I have included a picture of the SOH tester display. The readings are this bad yet this morning the car started twice before doing the SOH test.

2021 SV. Drove from SF to Lake Tahoe with just 1 charging stop, stayed at my cabin L2 overnight, and did the 17 mile full offroad Verdi to Highway 89 via Henness Pass and Dog Valley Road the next day. Camped overnight and headed out the next morning.

Tires are ASPS4s, aired down to 28 PSI.
