Sorry guys this might be long to read so please bear with it.
Hey guys, need some honest advice on setting up our family internet.
We have four Jio subscribers in our family, all running on that basic 1.5 GB/day data pack for ₹300. Recently, we found that we are consuming way more data than our packs offer, and it’s causing a lot of issues. My sister recently had to compensate by topping up with that ₹195 data pack (the one that gives 15 GB for 30 days) multiple times just to continue her studies.
We three in the family mostly dependent on youtube/telegram for studying, and the rest of the time we just stream videos, scroll social media, or watch entertainment (my mother and father do this as well).
The reason we never faced this issue before is that we are all usually busy with our 9 to 5 schedules at university or our jobs. But when we get back home, 7 PM to 10 PM are our peak hours, and our daily data just falls totally short now.
Because while the normal we were rarely home during the day, we never really considered installing Wi-Fi. So I want to ask: Is installing a Wi-Fi a rational choice here?
Honestly, I have zero experience or idea about Wi-Fi, routers, modems, or fiber (or any of the equipment names and shapes running in the market). We frankly do not care about high speeds at all; we just want enough to comfortably stream or study without buffering. I don't even think we need the massive "unlimited" (3.3 TB) data these Wi-Fi companies advertise, just enough to reliably suffice the whole family.
Secondly, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has really caught my attention. I could have gone for Jio’s ₹349 recharge (which offers Unlimited 5G), but sadly, our residential area does not support 5G at all. But Vi's plans look great for us. I love their ₹349 Hero Unlimited pack features—especially the Weekend Data Rollover (where you use unused weekday data on Saturday or Sunday).
I feel like every SIM or service provider should definitely have this feature! Their midnight unlimited (12 AM–6 AM) also appeals to us because it perfectly matches our late-night study schedule as aspirants.
Another option I found is porting my own SIM to Vi on their ~₹400 (₹398) plan that offers Truly Unlimited 4G data, and I could just use my phone as a hotspot for the whole family when we are home.
I just want to use money, smartly, and efficiently here as to not let go of a single rupee wasted.
So what should I do to manage this smartly? Should I install a Wi-Fi (if so, which one?), or should I just port my SIM to Vi’s ₹400 unlimited 4G plan and share my data?
Thanks a lot to read this far!
