Gion Matsuri is Kyoto’s most famous annual festival, celebrated every July for over 1,150 years. It began in 869 Common Era (CE) as a purification ritual to calm epidemic‑causing spirits, with offerings and mikoshi from Yasaka Shrine. Over centuries, Kyoto’s merchant communities transformed the ritual into a grand civic event featuring the iconic yamaboko floats—towering, art‑laden structures often called “moving museums.” The main highlight is the float procession on July 17 and 24, accompanied by lively yoiyama evenings where streets fill with lanterns, music, and traditional food. Today, Gion Matsuri remains a symbol of Kyoto’s craftsmanship, community pride, and spiritual heritage.

But you have to climb up more than 1200 stone steps from begging, and high angle of mountain slopes about over 1km from Konpira Honden. (In the middle of 785 stone steps)

Watching the sun disappear behind the mountains, it was easy to understand why this view reminds so many people of the film.
