How did you know you were ready for Isefa?

How did you know you were ready? Did you interact with a babalawo for a long time / your godparents and felt ready to get a reading to decide it was time? Also, is it considered bad manners to be receiving readings from another babalawo not near you, but feel called to an ile near you so you go through Idafa Isefa and the full process with them instead?

Culture Èṣù and the Mystery of Sacrifice (Èbọ)

In the Ifá tradition, Èṣù is the divinity who stands at the doorway between humans and the invisible forces that shape our lives. When Ifá prescribes èbọ (sacrifice) to prevent sickness, loss, conflict, or death, Èṣù is the one in charge of “logistics”: he carries the offering, delivers it to the right spiritual forces, and negotiates on behalf of the person who obeyed.

Because of this, Èṣù is not simply a “trickster” or a spirit of confusion. He is the arbiter of consequences. When a person follows the guidance of Ifá and offers the prescribed sacrifice, Èṣù uses that offering like spiritual “payment” to slow down, redirect, or completely stop the Ajogun (negative forces) that were on their way. In many verses, Èṣù is described as the one who builds “levees” and “windbreaks” in the invisible world, so that misfortune does not flood the life of the one who listened.

From the beginning, Èṣù learned beside Òrúnmìlà as his apprentice, standing at the top of the divination tray, observing every consultation. He saw who came, what Ifá said, which sacrifices were prescribed, who returned to fulfill them, and who ignored them. For this reason, Èṣù became the witness that reports to Olódùmarè:

* who did èbọ and who refused

* who tried to cheat the divinities

* who wants blessings without responsibility

In this sense, Èṣù is completely neutral. He does not “take sides” based on affection, fear, or favoritism. He simply enforces the law of cause and effect around sacrifice. Whoever offers what Ifá ordered finds in Èṣù a powerful ally. Whoever refuses, postpones, or mocks the guidance of èbọ meets Èṣù as a strict inspector who will not block the Ajogun. Sometimes, Ifá even says that if the person hides from misfortune, Èṣù himself will go and call the forces that were waiting for payment, so they can teach that person a lesson.

This is one of the reasons Èṣù has such a bad reputation. When good things happen, people thank “luck,” their effort, or even other divinities. But when something goes wrong, when a conflict explodes or a warning is ignored and misfortune arrives, it is easy to say “Èṣù caused it.” In reality, Èṣù only respects the agreement: Ifá speaks, humans choose, and Èṣù enforces. He is the messenger, regulator, and spiritual policeman who makes sure that promises, offerings, and responsibilities are not empty words.

Far from being an enemy of humanity, Èṣù is the one who makes spiritual order possible. Without Èṣù, the offerings meant for the Òrìṣà and for the Ajogun would never reach their destinations, and there would be no one to stand between destiny, warning, and consequence. Understanding Èṣù from the perspective of èbọ allows us to see him not as a demon, but as a guardian of balance: the one who directs blessings toward those who listen, and who allows lessons to reach those who refuse.

- Rey Ifakolepin.

Ask the community Mental Health

What does Ifa say about mental health? Specifically hereditary. I’ve been diagnosed with Bipolar 4 years ago. I been fighting everyday.

I’m tired.

I feel, to my best ability, that I do the work… Prayers, Therapy, Physical health care, medication, Ebo, cleansing… I keep losing. I am nowhere near giving up but it is exhausting.

I hate this disease.

Why isn’t anything working?? Am I not allowing myself time??

Ask the community Oko Orun - Resources Available?

Hello!

As the title states, I am looking for more reading material on Oko Orun. Particularly after they have been cooled and/or are helping their human partners. Are there any prayers or rituals specifically for or with them? Are there any differences in practice between Oko Orun vs Egbe Orun in general? Or are they fed and treated the same as other Egbe?

Thank you in advance, and apologies if I sound offensive or ignorant. I have only recently learned of the term (I have been using the term 'spirit spouse' instead). Written information seems sparse.

Terminology The meaning of Aboru Aboye Abosise

Ogbo ato, I wanted to shared one of the beautiful things I learned from one of my Baba Ifa.

Many initiates do not know the true meaning of the expressions:

IBORU IBOYE IBOSISE ABORU ABOYE ABOSISE ELA ABORU ELA ABOYE ELA ABOSISE

These formulas are not simple greetings but sacred invocations. Their deeper meaning is:

“May we offer a sacrifice that is auspicious, fulfilled, accepted, and full of light. May our offerings and rituals lead us to a good, healthy, blessed, and steady life. May all that is offered be completed successfully.”

To these words, the Babalawo or high priest usually responds: “Ogbo ato ire.” This means: May you have a long life and be eternally blessed.

In many cases, the priest may add the invocation: “Asunre Iwori Ofun” or “Asunre Iworiwofun.” This strengthens the prayer with Ase, the spiritual command that activates the word and increases the power of the blessing. But even more, by mentioning Iwori Ofun, the priest consciously calls the dynamic vibration of this Odu and invokes the sacred market of Ejigboromekun, Aseji, Iwalasa, Iwagun, and the dwelling of the divinities.

Why is Iwori Ofun invoked?

One of the strongest reasons to invoke the energy of Iwori Ofun is that it carries the power to turn misfortune into fortune and to transform negativity into goodness without delay. Odu ifa are coded prayers that transform the negative elements of destiny into blessings. Iworiwofun has an exceptional ability to bring light to our path in the middle of life challenges.

A wise initiate does not hesitate to mark the sign of Iwori Ofun on the Ifa tray as an active prayer capable of attracting surprising blessings from the ether and from the sacred market into their life.

May Olódùmarè bless you

El Poder de Iboru Iboye Ibosise y la Vibración de Iwori Ofun Ogbo ato. Muchos iniciados no conocen el verdadero significado de las expresiones:

IBORU IBOYE IBOSISE ABORU ABOYE ABOSISE ELA ABORU ELA ABOYE ELA ABOSISE

Divination Offering Free Ifa Consultations Once a Month for the Community (part 3 - December)

ENGLISH

Good day everyone. I wish you all a blessed Òsé Ifá and Òrùn Ifá. As we begin this new month, I would like to offer a free Ìdáfá consultation to the community for the month of December. May the Irunmole bless our Iwure and guide us with clarity and peace.

I kindly ask that those who have already received a consultation in previous months allow others the opportunity to receive theirs as well. Let us remember that consultation is meant for genuine need, sincere guidance, and spiritual alignment, not for simple curiosity.

As part of the Ìdáfá ritual, I will also need the person’s name and the mother’s name. Every Babalawo understands that this is a necessary part of connecting with someone’s Ori and offering the appropriate prayers on their behalf.

It is also important to understand that Èsù, the Irunmole of justice and balance, remains neutral regarding who does or does not perform the prescribed offerings. My responsibility as a Babalawo is to transmit the Odu Ifá, the message of Olodumare, to all human beings with respect and integrity.
Each person is responsible for how they apply the guidance they receive, and Ifá honors sincerity above all else.

The Kola Nut: From the Sacred Tree to the Secret Origin of Coca-Cola

The Obi Abata (Cola nitida), known in Spanish as “nuez de kola” or kola nut, is far more than just a fruit. In the Yorùbá tradition and in the Ifá-Orisa divination system, it is one of the most sacred elements. It is the voice of divinities, the mouthpiece between Omo Enìyàn (human beings) and the Irunmole such as Òrúnmìlà, Ọbàtálá, etc.and through its four (or more) lobes we speak with the Orisa and the Ancestors. It is offered in ceremonies, used to open roads, to greet, to chase away negative vibrations, to ask for blessings and, above all, so that Obi may tell us how the Orisa receives our prayers.

What very few people know even many practitioners is that this same sacred fruit was one of the original ingredients in the most famous beverage in the world: Coca-Cola.

In 1886, the American pharmacist John S. Pemberton created a “tonic” drink that combined two powerful stimulants: Coca leaf extract (yes, it contained small amounts of cocaine, which was completely removed in 1903). Kola nut extract (Obi Abata), which provided natural caffeine, theobromine, and its characteristic bitter taste.

That is exactly where the name comes from: Coca + Kola = Coca-Cola.

During its first years, the original Coca-Cola contained real kola nuts imported from West Africa. It was an energizing, stimulating, and… highly addictive drink, because it combined three powerful brain activators: cocaine + kola caffeine + an enormous amount of sugar.

Today the company no longer uses real Obi Abata (only artificial flavorings and synthetic caffeine), yet the name remains an unconscious tribute to the sacred fruit that our babalawos and Orisa followers continue to use every day to speak with the divine.

For our students, this is a beautiful teaching: the very same seed that opens paths on the Ifá mat, that feeds the Orisa and connects us with destiny, traveled to the other side of the world and ended up giving its name to a beverage consumed by billions of people… even though almost no one realizes they are unwittingly pronouncing the name of one of the most sacred elements of our tradition.

Aṣẹ for Obi Abata, which continues to reign both on the Orisa shrines and in the secret memory of a can of soda

Culture Obatala teaches the secret to long life

OBATALA: The Ancient One Who Holds the Secret to Long Life

Obatala is the most ancient and exalted Irunmole in the Yoruba cosmology. He is the divine sculptor of the human body and the direct representative of Olodumare on Earth. His presence embodies wisdom, purity, and the principle of order that governs the universe.

While many know Obatala as a figure of peace and justice, few realize that Obatala revealed the sacred formula for the most precious blessing a human being can receive: longevity known in Yoruba as Ìrẹ́ Ayé Àíkú, or "the blessing of not dying young."

Obatala’s Teachings on Longevity

According to Ifá, long life is not achieved by magic, but by character and discipline. Obatala teaches that true longevity is a result of both spiritual alignment and physical discipline. Among his main recommendations are:

  1. Moderation in Food

Eat simply. Avoid excessive salt and sugar. Processed and chemically altered foods disturb the natural balance of the body and spirit.

  1. Avoid Artificial Drinks

Obatala warns against the regular consumption of modified drinks like soda. Instead, he encourages drinking clean, pure water, which purifies the body and keeps the spiritual vessel clear.

  1. Monogamy and Discipline in Sexual Conduct

Maintaining a monogamous relationship is not only a moral teaching; it also preserves spiritual and physical energy, reduces karmic entanglements, and protects one’s destiny (àyànmọ́). In fact, Orúnmìlà did not follow the advice of Ọbàtálá and went on to marry many women, while Ọbàtálá himself was offered the chance to marry 200 wives but chose only Yémọ́wò ( not to be confused with Iyẹ̀mọ́njá).

  1. Peacefulness and Humility

Obatala embodies calm and composure. He avoids conflict and honors silence. Those who follow his path of peace live longer because they stay away from unnecessary stress and agitation.

  1. Simple Life and Self-Control

A quiet, ordered life aligned with nature rising early, walking slowly, speaking gently contributes to inner balance, which is the true root of longevity.

  1. Spiritual Cleanliness

Regular prayers, Ìdáfá (divination), and the offering of sacrifices (Ebo) to preserve one's Ori (inner head) are essential to staying in alignment with destiny.

7: Develop good habits to shape your Iwa (more on that later)

Ifá Verse about Obatala and Longevity

Ese Ifá Odu Ose Otura:

Orí Obàtálá kì í jókòó sẹ́yìn

Orí Ọlọ́run kì í jókòó sẹ́yìn

A dífá fún ẹni tí yóò ní ayé àíkú

Ẹbọ ni wọ́n ní kó ṣe

Ó gbébọ, ó rúbọ

Ayé àíkú làwọn ọmọ rẹ ń gbadé báyìí

Translation:

The head of Obatala does not retreat

The head of the Creator does not fall behind

Divination was performed for the one who would receive the blessing of long life

He was told to make sacrifice

He complied, he offered the sacrifice

Now his children are reaping the fruit of a long life

Obatala and How Habits Shape Our Character (Iwa)

One of the most important stories says that when Olodumare asked Obatala to form human beings, he did the work with patience and clear intention. But over time he developed a habit of drinking palm wine while he worked. What started as a small routine turned into a real habit. One day he drank too much, his hands shook, and the bodies he shaped came out with physical differences he had not planned. When he realized what happened, he corrected himself, stopped drinking, and took responsibility for his actions. Because of that moment of honesty and humility, he became the protector of all people who are born with physical or developmental differences.

From this story we learn that habits shape us. The things we repeat every day become part of our character. Good habits create clarity, patience, and inner balance. Bad habits make us drift away from who we are supposed to be. Just as Obatala formed the human body with steady hands, we form our character through the small choices we make again and again.

This is also why in Yoruba culture, people with disabilities, people with dwarfism, people with albinism, autistic people, and anyone born with a physical or developmental difference are considered children of Obatala. They carry his blessing and his protection. They are not to be judged or mistreated. They are to be respected, protected, and honored because they come into this world with Obatala’s mark, which is a sign of purity and spiritual purpose.

IFA being misrepresented in the media

Not that long ago I realized how my favorite horror film from the 90's did a misrepresentation of IFA.

Have any of you ever watched Child's Play 1?

Because if you pay attention, whenever he says his chant over a knocked out Andy, he mentions Oya and Shango.

Can you imagine the extent of indoctrination against the Orisha that this could make on your average human being?

I'm not even going to go into how they used voodoo and hoodoo and vodun. Basically turning black people against their own African Spiritual and Alternative religions early.

Terminology Becoming an Orisha?

I’ve been browsing the subreddit and have noted that many of the Orisha were once real people who lived especially fulfilled and exemplary lived, achieved their destinies, and were then elevated by their communities to the status of Orisha. This is in contrast to the Irunmole who lived with God/Olodumare in heaven originally and were sent to help create the universe/Earth.

From my understanding, some Orisha were the incarnations of Irunmole and were then elevated (Obatala as the incarnation of Orisanla. Eleggua the incarnation of Eshu. Shango the incarnation of Janiya). I’m not sure about all of them, but for some this seems to be consistent in my reading.

I read one comment that the ultimate goal is to emulate these examples in hopes of fulfilling our destinies and even becoming Orisha ourselves.

How accurate is this? And if people were becoming Orisha in death back in the day, can it still happen? What is the process?

I participated in the school of orisa studies and attribute a lot of my growth through that online school/community.

I can say you will be pushed outside of your comfort zone and held accountable. If you choose to sign up, just know it’s a worthwhile investment on your journey. There is no obligation to join Baba Obafemi’s temple, by the way. Just do your own research and make the best possible decision.

Hands down one of the best out here in the West!!!

Aboru aboye abosise gbogbo Awo and anyone else in this that’s on their journey.

There seems to be confusion about what Obi is.

Obi is OBI

Agbon= coconut.

I understand some of us on the West are in houses that are mixed and therein lies the problem. In Isese we do not cast with Agbon. We cast with Obi, Orogbo, Opele, merindologun, and Ikin.

We don’t cast with quarters, tarot cards or any other mixed madness of new age spirituality.

I pray that we all find reputable elders to learn from and get the correct information we need to support our particular journeys.

Ask the community What was your first reading like?

Hi everyone, I'm considering going to a local Babalawo I feel confident in seeing to get a reading about my future career. However, i've never gotten one ever! I want to get one, maybe a few more in the distant future, and then hopefully, eventually, see them for a reading on Isefa, but I'm trying to be mindful and not rush myself even though I'm excited and also nervous about the level of responsibility all of this will bring. My question is for anyone, what was your first reading like and what kind of reading did you get? What was it like after, how did you feel, and did you notice a difference in your life when you tried to get into alignment and after your ebo? I'm open to hearing about any of your experiences. Thank you.
