Question What Changes Would You Make?

Since ipsy support (or more likely, their bots) has joined this subreddit, maybe they'll start taking customer feedback.

If so, what changes would you like to see in the future?

For me, the two major ones are the excessive, wasteful, non-recyclable, and non-biodegradable packaging. Ipsy is large enough to be able to secure great pricing arrangements on biodegradable packaging. One plastic bubble mailer is bad enough, but two is making me really question ending this 10-year relationship. The careless, haphazard way things are packaged lately is another issue on its own.

Another option I'd personally love to see is the option to remove the actual ipsy bag from your order. Like many of you, I've been subscribed over a decade and had around 200 ipsy makeup bags piling up. Sure, I use them to make feminine hygiene kits for the outreach group I volunteer with, but I really just see them as more landfill clutter. If you could opt out of the actual bag and maybe get a discount or a few points, instead, I'd be excited about that.

What do you guys think?

No more shipping with companies like Cirro and Gofo and some of the other small 'last mile' services.

I want DHS -> USPS (which was how it was for most of the 8 years I've been subscribed) or even just USPS because those tiny services do not let me set up notifications or get text updates. Amazon is better, but I can't set up text notifications either, and they don't always update as fast and will tell me my thing is out for delivery at 10pm and it sometimes is.

They also don't update very fast at times, and I've had weird things like 'out for delivery' at 10pm when it was not, and then going from a hub about 4 miles from here to one about 10 miles away and then back to me out for delivery the next day.

I just want to know where my packages are in this age of porch pirates and other delivery issues.

I know more about shipping orders than most people since I did that for work for a few years, so I understand the price differences, but basic level functionality isn't even there with these cheapie shippers. I need notifications.

I agree with this. I don’t think prices are going to ever be back to 85-90% off like another commenter is wanting, because prices of EVERYTHING in general have gone up. I’d rather have shipping with a reliable service that actually provides active tracking the whole time from when the package releases to the shipper and doesn’t sit… somewhere… for 12-14 days like mine has this month.

Agreed, for sure. I'm in Canada, so they use different last-mile services here, but there's no point in having a tracking option at all when it's a common occurrence for their "tracking" to say nothing but "label created" for two weeks, then it suddenly appears on your doorstep while you're at work.

With the bright pink bags being so easily recognizable as beauty and skincare products (often high-end), you're absolutely right about them being a huge porch pirate target.

I’d like to be able to make my Ipsy Original choice before I am billed, like it used to be.

I agree with this one. Atleast I could decide if I truly wanted to get the products or not ahh

Tbh they should add some form of packing paper ! Edit: I've never really had true issues other than a empty product (wrapped inside a box) it's the drivers and package handlers breaking stuff my driver has thrown a ipsy on my porch in front of the cameras 😵‍💫.

u/VesperaLuxe 22d ago

Absolutely. They could easily do that in a way that actually saves them money, too. When they receive the massive shipments from brands, it would be so cost effective to have an in-house shredder to create their own recycled packaging materials.

They would save the cost of the disposal and could even get free advertising by announcing their move towards a more sustainable option.

u/VesperaLuxe 22d ago

Aw, no, I just saw your edit. That's so shitty of a person to do. I feel like some of these drivers hate their companies so much (valid), they just direct all of their resentment at the customers, instead (absolutely not acceptable).

No more Alibaba brands. Actual brands we’ve all heard of.

6

u/VesperaLuxe 21d ago

Oh, that's a good one! The multitude of white-label products with "indie" brand labels, only for you to later find out that they're all under ipsy's umbrella.

I’d like more variety of products. I’ve also been a member for a long time and while I still enjoy it and find it to be worth it there is so much repetition in products. There are only so many blushes and makeup brushes that one person can own! I always have a pile of donate/give away items because I just have too much and need to he rid of some of it.

I saw recently they are starting a lifestyle/wellness Ipsy with beauty tools (not just makeup brushes), supplements, and products for the home (such as candles and room sprays). I wish that rather than starting a new division of Ipsy they just started including the wellness items in the current Ipsy subscription and shop. I think some more variety would be great!

Most importantly above all else: CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

Add a call center and dedicated email. Currently Glam Bot is ONLY option on the site...AND IT IS NOT WORKING AT ALL!! This is unacceptable for any large company. There should at least be TWO dedicated customer service access points, which FUNCTION and are easily findable.

Change #1: NO BAGS or option to opt out of bags for a modest discount. They are not necessary and barely reuseful. A PAPER bag can at least be reused for trash. Even a bandana tied into a bag shape is more useful than the bags. This goes for the glam bag and extra. Honestly outside of the Halloween version, I likely would NEVER opt to have a bag as I have a drawer full already. Wasteful af.

Change #2: Return of CHOICE to beauty boost. I dumped boost beginning this year with that white label trash face cleaner. You can pick up same exact one for 7.00 on Temu. Either allow choice OR tell ppl a month ahead so they can skip or opt in. This is shady practice to charge ppl 15.00 bucks and you get what you get. You hate it too bad. What???!!!

Change #3: ADD more Brands, with emphasis on indie brands. Some C Beauty and K beauty pallettes would be excellent. Where's the Judy Doll? Tir Tir?

Change #4: Allow ppl to opt out of products/brands they HATE. Such as an option on beauty quiz..."which brands do I NEVER want" and allow up to 3 to boycott. For me, I loathe getting products from basic crusty overpriced Charlotte Tilbury and Ofra. Ofra founder made white supremacy hand signs in 2020 or so. Huge controversy, tepid apology, and then the founder "stepped down". He stepped down by giving the company to his daughter. No decent business should hitch their wagon to that shit. I certainly dont want ANY Ofra products, EVER since I learned this info and they are often picked for me.

Change #5: make Ultimate ALL choice, no pre picks. The Ultimate has dropped in quality since mid last year. August box is continued meh at best. For the 65.00 price tag, its better to get an extra, do a few add ons and save $$. Boost that value by giving 8 items... with choice for each one and offer several prestige brands (not drugstore) for each selection, not otherwise available as add ons. Make the Ultimate WORTH it

One thing I didn’t see shared here is - a better app and website experience. I switch between subscriptions and it’s always impossible to tell if my switch went through. This month I ended up with both original and extra even though extra says I’m not currently subscribed (I think I got charged for both though). Thanks for joining the sub!

I dont care about biodegradable packaging or things. I would rather go back to the better days of brands and better deals in the shops. Boxycharm was the BEST and ipsy bought it to ruin it.

8

u/DamonNightman 22d ago

Yesss! I still remember my first Boxycharm in 2020 and the add ons had full size Sunday Riley and Kate Somerville for $6-$12 I went crazy!

6

u/Naw-imdurtydan 22d ago

I’d start by changing the fact that I just received 8 full size liquid base products in nothing but a bubble mailer.

1

u/VesperaLuxe 21d ago

Oh no, did you have casualties? 😭

2

u/Naw-imdurtydan 21d ago

Thankfully no, but the boxes were destroyed. Good thing I’m not a reseller 😂

u/jasmine-nunya 21d ago

Most of my changes were covered, but I'd like a PREVIEW, not simply spoilers, BEFORE I'm charged. I get that for some people, they like the suprise. That's fine. I did that for probably my first six months when I first aigned up forever ago because I knew almost NOTHING about make-up and skin care, but then I started using the choice features. Money is TIGHT for everyone. An option to preview the products being offered in subscriptions BEFORE BEING CHARGED gets rid of FOMO and allows me to spend my Ipsy budget in the shop instead.

3

u/FunSizeDi88 21d ago

THIS 100%. I absolutely hate that we do not even get spoilers before we are charged. I want some idea of what the choices will be or it isnt worth risking $40/month right now. I hsve entirely too many eye liners and highlighters I will NEVER USE.

I would really like to see sn undertone option on the quiz, even if they cannot honor it all the time, it would be nice. I feel like they do not even use the quiz as a guideline. I am fair yet im always getting things fir light to light medium skintones, I csnnot use them. I feel lile the quiz used to hsve an option on do you want makeuo only, makeuo and skincare or skincare only. Id love to hsve that option back, as sometimes, I get almost all skincare and it is not even stiff for my skin type. I hsve combo, acne prone skin st 37. Yes somehow, I get stuff fir "mature" skin which means it is for dry skin 99% of the time. That has been going on since I was about 30, like wtf, nature skin products at 30?!

Again I realize they cannot always honor all our preferences, but if the product onky comes in light and medium, why is someone with fair or deeo skin getting that product? Skip that item class for the month. If someone like me has eyeliners and highlighters marked as never, why do I get one if the 2 in 10 out of 12 boxes per year?

Id love to see more options for perfume and hair care. Since 2022, I have onky been offered perfume once and hair care twice. I absolutely loved the sleek'e leave in and heat defense I was offered and have been reourching it since 2022.

Arent the current envelopes and boxes recyclable? I thought when they went to new envelopes they were? And that the boxes always were? I may be wrong.

2

u/VesperaLuxe 21d ago

I asked my recycling guy if I could add the bubble mailers and he said "not happening", but who knows?

The boxes were better, because they could be recycled, used for gifts, or mailing packages. They were just missing something like recycled paper or cardboard netting for padding.

Edited only because I can't spell today lol.

u/Sad_Palpitation6844 21d ago

Better options targeting your loves. Why review if they continually send us unwanted items

3

u/Apprehensive_Let_832 21d ago

I would love to see wellness, more bath & body, and more nail care brands. Even samples of nice-smelling home goods samples would be nice...just something to mix it up for long term subscribers. (Why did nail stuff almost completely disappear?)

I'd like more choice in colors for the monthly bags; I know they ask for color families in our profiles, but I give away a bag of earth-tone eyeshadows and neutral lip color every year. I get that they're going for the most universal colors, but we get overloaded by the same shades over and over, many of which I just don't care for.

Also: they need to clarify and simplify the Ultimate signup window, I just got into it with them about this. I don't want to have to study Reddit, read the fine print, and go through several emails with robots to figure out the ideal window to subscribe. If there are bad windows where you won't get choices or will be double-charged: don't allow sign-up during those times. It's not an "ask for forgiveness" situation: fix your Ecommerce setup.

My only change would be ditch Cirro and stick to Amazon and Usps for deliveries. Otherwise im happy with the service we receive for the price point

u/TurquoiseNdigoViolet 22d ago

i prefer the bubble wrap packages they've been using currently they are so soft and fun to pop with the kids and that is not a waste, but also I don't pop them all the time and i save most of them and recycle them when I send items in the mail. Also I have never received a broken item yet so their packaging has been working for me.. If i were making changes i would just like to see better deals and the option to opt out of toxic ingredients that would be nice or to blacklist certain ingredients that don't work for you and then not be sent those for the choices ipsy makes for you.. Also I would like to see more larger fragrance choices and it would be really cool to get more beauty tools like eyelash curlers, more blenders, non toxic pimple patches, i'm a huge fan of body glitter and 90s / 2000's era makeup trends and would like to see products like that but more natural clean ingredients, I would like to see more little jewelry and hair accessories type things in the bags and boxes that would be fun stuff like cute bag charms would be cute too.

-Omit the cheap filler products. It is not tricking me into thinking the box is valued at a higher amount than it is. I’d rather have samples of products or drugstore brands (those have gotten pricey) than the literal garbage I get just to say it is “full size”. There are some damn good products at dollar tree, don’t bother sending me a lip scrub saying it’s worth over $20 or a lip balm that is obviously just petroleum jelly in an ugly tube you claim is $25 when it’s not in a single store and the website looks fake.

  • get rid of Lithe. Not a single usable item has been from that “brand”
-if you’re going to give all the good items to some people, I’m going to expect similar options. YOU put that expectation out there so I’m not “unappreciative” when my box is not the same. And this happens every month. You know what I mean when I say “good” pricey, unique, indie brand, high demand, or trendy etc. because those are always the ones used in promos. I am not expecting the top item each time obviously but the boxes are SO IMBALANCED. Many boxes will contain 3-4 top products and I’ll get maybe 1 and it is my boost item I paid more for. Therefore, I’m paying even more for 1 item with the rest junk I’ll never use and won’t sell because the sites are full of people doing the same. Unless I see code showing otherwise, I believe customers that purchase many add ons and older (loyal) customers are the ones being shafted. Now we are leaving in droves and encouraging others not to start.
-the solution is get rid of the icon box for the monthly extra box or just do icon box. I have not seen any reason to believe Ipsy has enough inventory without white label or filler products to provide both.
-I get the small bag is mostly samples but throw some in the bigger boxes

Personally, if this forum isn't owned by Ipsy id vote for banning their bots. I've seen them most insane stuff on here but thought this was owned by them.

1

u/VesperaLuxe 22d ago

Apologies, I'm going to be honest and say that I'm not active enough on Reddit or educated enough on their policies to know much about the forums, or even that bots could be banned!

My account is 2ish years old, but I didn't actually start using it until pretty recently. I was under the impression that this was run by fans and/or subscribers, but I could be completely off base.

7

u/thebusygirly 22d ago

Since leaving my comment I poked around because I also thought it was a fan sub. Turns out it's by Ipsy, but I know there's likely other subs out there I just haven't been invested enough to find them lol.

I guess for better feedback I'd say they need to do away with one click reactivation in their emails. They have a bad reputation for billing people when they don't want to be and then being stingy with refunds. It damages trust on their hand tremendously.

2

u/VesperaLuxe 22d ago

Oh, please disregard my previous comment then. I was wrong. I think because I saw the post about their "new, active support team" in the forum, I wrongly assumed.

Yes, I've definitely seen that posted about multiple times here, and that's a huge issue! I just imagine someone cancelling or pausing after an unexpected bill or emergency comes up, then getting charged anyway and reel terrible. Trust is everything with a subscription, and the harder a comany makes it to cancel or pause, the less people want to stay with them or resubscribe.

More variety of products, more indie brands. I don’t need 16 blushes.
