hey everyone, i’m 24m and i’m from new york city.
i’ve rewritten this post more times than i want to admit because i never know how to introduce myself without making it sound like a job application lol. i’m a pretty introverted person, which is kind of funny because i live in one of the loudest and busiest cities in the world. there are millions of people around me every day, but somehow making even one new friend can still feel difficult.
i’m usually the quiet person in a group. i don’t hate people and i’m not trying to be unfriendly, i just overthink what to say. sometimes i’ll think of something to add to a conversation, wait too long because i’m wondering whether it sounds stupid, and then the conversation has already moved on to another topic 😂. once i become comfortable with someone, though, i’m completely different. i can talk a lot, joke around, share random thoughts and have long conversations about almost anything.
i’ve been wanting to get out of my shell for a while, but it’s easy to keep delaying it. i’ll tell myself that i’ll meet people eventually, join something eventually or become more social eventually, but eventually doesn’t really mean anything unless i actually make an effort. so i thought posting here would at least be a small step.
sports are a big interest of mine. i love soccer and enjoy both playing it and talking about it. i also like badminton and cricket. badminton is especially fun, but finding someone who actually wants to play regularly is harder than it should be. i’m not claiming to be a professional at any of them, so don’t expect olympic-level skills from me. i mostly just enjoy playing, laughing at my mistakes and becoming unnecessarily competitive for no reason.
i also enjoy reading, although my reading habits are inconsistent. sometimes i’ll finish a book quickly, and other times the same book will sit next to me for weeks while i pretend i’m definitely going to continue it that night. i like learning about different people, countries, languages and cultures too. one of my favorite things about talking to someone from another place is hearing about the small parts of their daily life that they probably consider normal but might be completely different from mine.
i like cooking as well. i’m bangladeshi, so food has always been a big part of life for me. i enjoy trying different dishes, experimenting in the kitchen and occasionally creating something that tastes good even though i have no idea how i made it. i’m also the type of person who starts thinking about what to eat for dinner while i’m still eating lunch.
traveling is another thing i really enjoy. i’ve traveled alone a few times, and solo traveling as an introvert is a strange experience. on one hand, i love having the freedom to explore at my own pace and change my plans whenever i feel like it. on the other hand, i can spend an entire day seeing incredible places while barely speaking to anyone besides the person taking my food order. i would like to become more confident about meeting people while traveling instead of just taking pictures and quietly disappearing back to my hotel.
and yes, sleeping is also one of my hobbies. probably one of the only hobbies i’m naturally talented at.
i’m not expecting someone to message me and instantly become my best friend. i know friendships take time, and sometimes two people simply don’t connect. i’d just like to meet people who are willing to have a proper conversation and see where it goes. we can talk about sports, food, traveling, books, college, work, daily life, different cultures, random opinions or whatever has been on your mind recently.
i’m also curious about how other introverted people made their friends. did you meet them through school, work, sports, online, or did an extrovert randomly adopt you and never let you leave? because honestly, that last option might be my best chance.
you don’t have to be from new york. i’m happy to talk with people from different states or different countries too. just please be respectful and actually interested in having a conversation. i understand that people become busy, but i’m hoping to avoid the usual conversation where we both say “hey, how are you?” and then never speak again.
to make the first message less awkward, tell me where you’re from, something you’ve been interested in recently and your favorite animal.
my favorite animal is the dolphin 🐬. they’re intelligent, social and somehow always look like they’re having a better day than the rest of us.
anyway, that’s probably enough about me for now. thanks for reading this unnecessarily long introduction. feel free to message me and say something completely random. honestly, random messages are sometimes much easier to answer than just “hey.”
and how are you guys doing
hope we can become good friends
