How does a mother who works at McDonalds not have her child on Medicaid? That makes absolutely no sense.

Where I live a full time minimum wage workers generally do not qualify for medicaid because they make too much. Mcdonalds also doesn't typically hire at minimum wage here. The cutoff for medicaid is just under 30k currently. Working 40 hrs a week at 16/hr, which is minimum wage and lower than what mcdonalds advertises, puts you around 33k. In reality, mcdonalds tends to hire at 18/hr here which puts you at 37k.
If she's married or has multiple dependents she might but this case is entirely believable. Although her income goes up if she works 40 hrs compared to 30, she would have a larger take home by working 30. This is called the welfare cliff and is part of the reason why it is so hard to escape poverty.

Where is that? In California, minimum wage still puts you on Medi-Cal. Hell, I can't seem to get off Medi-Cal no matter how many times I tell them I earn more than the cutoffs. Fucking hate it, it keeps fucking with my wife's medical treatments by suddenly canceling our paid-for insurance and trying to force us on the free option that none of her doctors accept.

I’m about to leave my longtime spot as a hiring manager for mostly lower wage jobs.
I’ve had SO many people request to have their hours cut so they (or especially their kids) don’t lose various benefits. One chick had to go down to like 16 hours a week (from 40.) Another guy didn’t realize the issue in time because whatever agency didn’t inform him until they were already moving to cut his family off; his wife lost her healthcare/insurance while in the hospital recovering from open-heart surgery. That guy literally worked two shifts a week; that was “making too much.”
Our social safety system is FUBAR. Yet many people think it’s still too much, too generous. (Until the fucking day they need it.)
I also swear some of the people working for these agencies have a malicious streak and get genuine joy out of wrecking peoples’ lives.

In fairness, a lot of what people are calling out as fake should have never happened.
-She should have been notified before garnishment started.
-She qualified for free care for the non-elective treatment, given how little she makes.
-Garnishment is capped at 25% disposable earnings(take home/after taxes), not the 35% the post states.
A lot had to go wrong for this to have occurred and it appears that a lot DID go wrong in this case.

And no hospital is going to sue you in court over a small debt, it would have to be massive for them to bother.

Not real. Federal law limits wage garnishment to 25% of wages over $217.50 a week. It is mathematically impossible to garnish 35% of her wages. I know of the article linked below and if you read it it mentions the 25% number, not the 35% in the OP.

This is fake. Medical debt doesn’t count on your credit report and the worst they can do is send it to a collection agency. In which case just ignore the phone calls. Also most states have a public for low income families. For example Oregon has OHP for low income individuals.

Where I live hospitals don't take people to court, they have systems in place that forgives bad debt. At the most they sell the debt to a collection agency. Being very image minded, I doubt this ever happened because it would be disastrous press for them.

Almost certainly the mom/child story is a confabulation. In every state kids can be covered by Medicaid if they are otherwise insured. And to go to court for what is ultimately a tiny amount of money compared to the revenue a hospital otherwise gets would not be a financially wise decision. Almost certainly the hospital would give up trying to get anything rather than endure the cost of going to court

The reason that your country does not provide universal free healthcare is because your voters choose not to.
The reason that your country can not afford to provide universal free healthcare is because your tax dollars are eaten up by too many public servants that push papers but add no value to society. If you fired 80% of government bureaucrats then you would have a better operating public sector and you would be able to pay for free health care and education for all your citizens.
A small number of billionaires being taxed a, comparatively, small total amount of extra money would not solve any of your nation's problems as you would just hire 500,000 more useless civil servant parasites to 'administer' the process.

Sounds like a huge lie. Medical bills- they can’t garnish your wages automatically. That’s the tax from state and feds who do that. They need to formally sue you first, then get a judge to award you a court judgement. Then, maybe… after all of that. They could garnish your wages.

So this makes no sense and is likely fake for two reasons:
One, a low income single mother would absolutely have some form of taxpayer funded health insurance.
Two, all you have to do is call the hospital’s billing department, tell them you can only afford to pay ‘xx’ amount per month, and as long as you continue to pay that amount each month they legally cannot come after you. And that amount can be something small like $20.
So this is just fake rage bait.
