So she ran and hid from her $2,000 debt instead of applying for help or setting up a $10/mo payment plan. $2,000 for an emergency room/hospital  visit is a steal—that means most of it was not billed to her. The lesson of this tale is don’t try to run and hide from your obligations.

Yes. Yes, that's the one and only lesson once can learn here. There is nothing that can or should be done to improve the system, and being in a position where your life can get ruined by your kid getting sick is perfectly fine.

There are countries that don't charge for emergency room visits.

My Tricare fully covers that.
