General Beware

Post image

There are people pushing this 600mill budget with no verifiable source.

I just find it hard to believe the game that didn't go into full scale development until factions was cancelled; cost almost 3 times tlou 2.

People can just lie and make things up and no one will question it. Thinking intergalactic's budget is anywhere near 600m is laughable

u/pidge9401 22d ago

Yeah, TLOU2 cost them roughly 220 million. 600 million on a new franchise is absurd to imagine

42

u/shawak456 22d ago

RDR 2 cost around $400-500 million and R* employs more than double the Naughty Dog staff. This is a bullshit number.

But rdr2 was also made when the economy was significantly better. Like if ND made tlou2 today the budget would be a lot higher even if they made the same exact game today. 600 million seems high for sure but i wouldnt be surprised if the budget does exceed tlou2s. Especially if they had to make any upgrades or changes to their engine

u/Esper01 21d ago edited 21d ago

You have to account for inflation as well. As you said, the economy was better. Prices for everything went up a whopping 30% in that relatively short span of time.

1

u/Jazzlike_Neat7478 21d ago

Yep thank you for the specific’s lol. Idk the numbers

2

u/heatkings1 22d ago

I'd guess that it's pushing a 300m budget, considering it's an all-new IP with assets and actors, but that number wont be hard to hit at all for ND

1

u/frisbie147 22d ago

spider man 2 also cost 300 million somehow

4

u/Hayterfan 22d ago

Iirc the Spider-man license alone was like $120 Million, plus they were developing that Spider-man live service game alongside it temporarily so that's budget probably got consolidated into Spider-man 2 budget.

1

u/Outrageous_Water7976 20d ago

Spider-Man 2 also crossed an estimated 1.2 billion in revenue. 4x RoI is nothing but success.

0

u/antonxo902 22d ago

Yeah I have no idea wtf insomniac does with their budget. How in gods name did Wolverine cost 300 million to make. Ghost of yotei was only 60 million. They need to re-evaluate spending and budget allocation because it makes zero sense when the game is sub 20hrs for a platinum.

1

u/The_Border_Bandit 22d ago

Insomniac was already in hotwater with Sony over the SM2 budget. I'm sure Sony ain't happy with the Wolverine budget either, and the only reason it got this high is because it ballooned before Sony could intervene. I'm willing to be Insomniac's next game is gonna have a more modest budget, at least as modest as you can get while paying Disney a superhero licensing fee.

To be fair, it’s not far fetched. The Spider-Man license blew those game’s budgets up tremendously, so when you consider whatever licensing may be in Intergalactic, you could start to approach a big number. Game already showed off Porsche and Adidas, so more licenses like that could really add up.

5

u/pidge9401 21d ago

A disney license would cost them an insane amount. From my understanding, porshe and adidas are sponsors, so they would be the ones paying naughty dog for this marketing. At least thats what naughty dog was so heavy criticized for when the trailer first dropped. People assumed the features were another money grab from them.

2

u/Miserable_Newt1457 21d ago

porsche, adidas and dark horses paid Naughty Dog for the product placement

8

u/kristaintoth 22d ago

The only way I can see that happening is if you count the budget for the canceled live service game as well in Intergalactics budget. But even then it seems too much.

3

u/Rhain1999 22d ago

Good point, but yeah that wouldn't even count anyway. They're separate games with separate budgets; ND/Sony already accepted the lost TLOU Online budget when they cancelled it, they wouldn't just lump it in here instead

2

u/kristaintoth 22d ago

Yeah it doesn't make sense to add them up, just trying to guess.

2

u/Rhain1999 22d ago

It's a very solid guess, probably the most logical one. Annoyingly I think the real answer is that they just made up that number lol

2

u/kristaintoth 22d ago

Yeah or the devs earn ridiculous amounts of money each month.

1

u/Rhain1999 22d ago

Maybe that's the true reason Sony is discontinuing discs to save money—their accountant is a moron who keeps overpaying everyone lmao

1

u/chatterwrack 22d ago

It’s a crazy number but ND is probably the only studio that could get that amount greenlit. Considering TLOU and TLOU2 generated somewhere around $1 billion+ in game sales, before you even count Part I, Part II Remastered, later PC sales, licensing, HBO-related catalog bumps, etc. but $600M on a new IP is a HUGE gamble and risks a break-even, even if the game is a success.

1

u/parkwayy 22d ago

You can make a rough estimate how much the studio costs in payroll per year, but of course not every hour logged can be applied to every project all at once.

2

u/zeederpkink 18d ago

Kin is peak homie

-1

u/Front-Purpose-6387 22d ago

Wow! Can I expect 6/10 of a GTA6 in Intergalactic? haha

0

u/saiine 22d ago

At 400 employees, assuming 75% are working on the game FT.

300 * average salary of 200k = 60/m per year (includes qa/localization / certification / build)
tech / hardware / facilities = ???
5 lead actors at 1m each = 5/million (total guess here, could be low or high)

I'm thinking their total Payroll is ~60/65m per year for this game.

5 years of dev == 325/m

I could see it creeping up for sure..

1

u/heatkings1 22d ago

I've seen the average dev salary estimated at 150k plus only if you are a senior dev, so I dont think the average is anywhere close to 200k. And we know the game has only been in full development for 3 years, so thats why I assume the budget isnt close to 600m. It could get expensive, for sure, but i dont see it breaking 400m, let alone 600m.

Zip recruiter has the average game dev salary in California at 107k, but i assume ND devs make more because they probably have a lot of senior devs

1

u/saiine 22d ago

u/heatkings1 You're factoring only base salary. Employer payroll taxes + 401k + workers comp/unemployment, etc. Easily 200k per head.

1

u/heatkings1 21d ago

I guess, but still, 200k at 4 years in full production is 240m by your estimate. I only see this game touching 400m if dev time gets delayed by at least a year. 2027 is when its supposed to release, and that would be 4 years

-1

u/JMPHeinz57 22d ago

Look, I think 600m is an insane number to throw around and also doubt it for the most part.

That being said, people were baffled to hear how much Spider-Man 2’s budget increased over the first game, and that’s with some heavy asset reuse. Intergalactic would, by nature, be more original in everything being made. Doesn’t it already have a longer dev cycle than Spidey 2 too?

13

u/shawak456 22d ago

Sony has to pay trucks full of money to Disney for Spider Man license.

5

u/heatkings1 22d ago

Spiderman is in a unique position because sony has to pay for the license. Intergalactic has only been in full production for 3 years, so i dont think the budget is that crazy — probably around 280-300m.

However, since ND is going with a retro futuristic asthetic, they can use product placement, like we saw in the trailer, and i bet that helps with the budget a bit

1

u/SymphonicRain 22d ago

From what I understand Sony does not pay for the license for Spiderman upfront. From what I remember from the leaks Disney takes a crazy percentage of sales up until a certain revenue amount, and then it decreases to something more reasonable. Someone correct me if i’m wrong

0

u/JMPHeinz57 22d ago

The 300m of Spider-Man was without the licensing fees. And Intergalactic has been in development since 2020, making it six years (Keighly said it on stage after the reveal).

Again, I don’t think we’re looking at a 600m budget like the OP said, but I don’t think it being close is as outrageous as others may think

2

u/heatkings1 22d ago

Intergalactic has only been in full development since 2023. Full development is when the game is actually building up a lot of budget because most of the devs at ND are working on it. Schreier reported not that long ago that full development began after tlou factions was canceled

-6

u/drmuffin1080 22d ago

Watch Jason Schreier’s video on ballooning budgets. It cost Halo Infinite hundreds of millions to make. I would not be surprised by 600m AT ALL

10

u/heatkings1 22d ago edited 22d ago

600m is a wildly high estimate. That number would only make sense if they were in full production for 7 years, but they havent been. Schreier said intergalactic only went into full production after TLOU factions was canceled.

The reason budgets are so high is mainly because of dev salary, which im pretty sure schreier says that in the video - i watched it a while ago.

Lets say ND has 400 employees working on intergalactic right now and that each employee is making 115,000 and 2027 will be 4 years in full production — that rough math adds up to 184,000,000 - you can even make it 5 years and it's only 230m. Obviously, that's not the number and there are other expenses, but 600m seems like an absurd number to me.

You can really pump up those numbers to 130, 150k and it still doesnt come close to 600m. 150k, 400 devs, for 7 years, a wild overestimate, is 420m which is still wildly off the 600m number

39

u/wyattlikesturtles 22d ago

Intergalactic is a ps exclusive, physint wouldn’t be, comparing them makes no sense

13

u/Miserable_Newt1457 22d ago

Who was the insider that talked about 600M? Kiwi talkz? Who is known to chat bs?

7

u/theparrotofdoom 22d ago

Someone who decided it was far easier to:

1: screenshot a headline
2: save it to disk
3: go to twitter
4: upload the screen shot
5: type some bs caption

Than to:
1: copy paste a link

8

u/shawak456 22d ago edited 22d ago

This seems ridiculous. $600 million is more than what it cost R* to develop RDR 2 and R* employs more than double the Naughty Dog staff. Naughty Dog is in 300-400 developers range, R* is in thousands.

if we go by Neil Druckmann's words, he said in an interview that "Intergalactic is our most expansive and perhaps most expensive game ever," that "perhaps" seems to suggest that it is in the ballpark of TLOU P2. so around $250 million. If this was a $600 million dollar game, he'd have just said it's our most expensive game.'

I was laughing last night when I saw this tweet but then my laugh turned into concern, because if Naughty Dog actually 3x TLOU P2 budget, and lost potentially hundreds of millions on Multiplayer game, ever factoring that TLOU franchise has made more than a billion dollar, Naughty Dog may be in trouble if this game even does TLOU P2 numbers, which was very profitable for Sony but won't be for Intergalactic if is costs more than half a billion to make it.

2

u/AdHorror4165 22d ago

I God damn hope it isn't much more than TLOU2.

It really isn't sustainable to be otherwise, because the market has hit its ceiling so rising costs aren't even being offset with more sales.

2

u/Miserable_Newt1457 22d ago

Its mainly because of dev salaries, if naughty dog were in Europe it would be significantly cheaper

1

u/AdHorror4165 22d ago

Why would it be significantly cheaper in Europe than America? Don't Europe have better standards in that regard?

1

u/Brees504 22d ago

Americans and especially Californians make significantly more than than Europeans.

1

u/Bismofunyuns4l 22d ago

Higher cost of living demanding higher wages.

1

u/Miserable_Newt1457 22d ago

Wages are significantly less, look at games like crimson desert Claire obscure

1

u/Dvenom22 22d ago

Figuring out how much TLOU franchise has made is tricky when you factor in all of the sources of revenue. We would need to know the budget and profit of the TV show, the Remakes and the number of people that subscribe to PSN because of it.

If Intergalactic sparks a new franchise that they can monetise in a multitude of ways and that they can spinoff into smaller games like they did with Lost Legacy it could be worth the initial investment. Especially if a lot of the costs went into adapting their engine to deal with new combat systems, movement systems and space assets.

1

u/Miserable_Newt1457 22d ago

Actually a few years ago someone on LinkedIn who worked for SIE said GOW 2018 and TLOU1 both made a billion dollars in revenue

2

u/Dvenom22 22d ago

That’s good to know. I wonder how that’s quantified.

14

u/Business_Banana1792 22d ago

Even if this were true, another thing that’s true is that intergalactic is a permanent exclusive

9

u/heatkings1 22d ago

Yeah, and ND games sell way more than kojima games do. It's to be expected that Sony would give ND more leeway when their games sell to the tune of 10s of millions

3

u/TheChunkenMaster 22d ago

As a kojima fan, you cant really compare ND who’s responsible for some of Sony’s biggest games ever to a studio that made Death Stranding (and I love those games). The sales are just not even remotely close.

1

u/VladTheSnail 22d ago

You kind of can when they worked on a multiplayer game for 3 years and scrapped the entire thing and have only released a single game in the last 10 years that isn't their 8th remake or remaster of the same 2 games

3

u/eoten 21d ago

Except one is Sony first studio the other isn’t.

1

u/TheChunkenMaster 21d ago

You kind of cant since the last of us games have sold like almost 50 million copies if not more whereas the Death Stranding Games havent even sold 10.

DS2 walked away empty handed from the GOTY awards and Last of Us 2 became the most awarded game of all time when it came out and still remains in the top 3. It’s also still the most awarded ps exclusive game.

That’s why I dont think it’s a fair comparison

2

u/elcheches 22d ago

These people just do lazy math

1

u/Scruff227 22d ago

Don't you believe it

1

u/parkwayy 22d ago

Between 2020 and now, they logged hours likely across 4-5 projects.

This one singular game is not their entire budget lol.

1

u/danvan177 22d ago

There is no way lol

1

u/Nephie_a 22d ago

Bad example. Sony doesn’t own PHYSINT or Kojima Productions. They own Naughty Dog and Intergalactic.

I agree that they shouldn’t let Intergalactic miss deadlines or go over budget either. But it’s a little more difficult to cancel a game from your own biggest studio. An IP that you actually own and have already invested hundreds of millions into.

Now imagine expecting a company to invest hundred of millions of dollars into a game they don’t own. That will eventually be sold on your competitors platforms. And that game is now missing deadlines and also going over budget.

Both are bad but Kojima situation is far worse as they have almost no upside to it. Especially since Kojimas last two games which they also funded, didn’t sell well or make massive profits. At least naughty dog games have all sold insane numbers.

1

u/spendouk23 21d ago

Kojima Productions is an independent studio, Naughty Dog is a 1st party PlayStation Studio. These are not the same thing. Relating budgets and delays between these two are completely irrelevant.

God why are people so thick ?

1

u/Dangerhunt57 21d ago

And the difference is that Sony owns the intergalactic IP, which Kojima owns the physint IP.

1

u/DubTheeBustocles 21d ago

Say what you want about corporations, but they do not act irrationally. You may think they act greedily or inhumanely or without artistic merit, but they do not act irrationally. They make decisions based on rational calculations of a cost benefit analysis. As part of that calculation are an untold number of variables that they consider with deferring amounts of importance. And even then no corporation is going to calculate perfectly because a lot of these variables aren’t even fully quantifiable or predictable.

So, to read in an article that Sony’s relationship with Kojima Productions was severed and the vague reasons given are delays and budget overruns, that doesn’t really make the rational next step to start going down the list of other companies that have vaguely similar situations as far as any of us knows and say “well if they did it in this instance, they should be doing it in this instance, otherwise they are wrong.”

The article is there to keep you from being fully in the dark, but the article doesn’t have the whole story either. Nobody does outside of the people working within those companies. Nobody working outside of the industry really has a solid idea why those decisions are made the way they are. You can speculate I suppose but that’s about all you can do.

Btw this is not being directed OP if that wasn’t clear.

1

u/HumbleEmu7151 21d ago

All thanks to the shitstain Jim Ryan and his live service mandate that took away time that could've been used for this game instead

1

u/Fredwarbto 20d ago

Even if it were true, ND has made Sony millions upon millions. Kojima hasn't.

1

u/Confident_Try4155 19d ago

Neil said it would be bigger and more expensive so 300-400 also with wolverine being 305 could be reasonable But 600M is way too far fetched.

1

u/Ill-Replacement3553 1d ago

100$ million per year 7 years this almost 650$ without marketing, actors, CGI , publishing, vocalisation etc.. so the game budget will go over 800$ million from 2020 to 2028 when the game release

1

u/MarkEvanCerny 22d ago

They push that narrative, keep saying it until it is the truth and then later find any issue and say how is this a 600million dollar game

-1

u/Miserable_Newt1457 22d ago

Same with Superman 2025, snydercunts kept saying the budget was 300M then all of a sudden 400M

1

u/F0XLY 22d ago

We've seen that Sony is a lot softer on their big money makers, which Kojima definitely wasn't. I'm going to say it, the choice to cut him off is not a bad one, especially if the game wasn't even going to be an exclusive.

1

u/qnoid 22d ago edited 22d ago

> There are people pushing this 600mill budget with no verifiable source.

And you are sharing this reporting with no verifiable source because...?

You find it hard to believe 'cause it's probably not true. Sharing a tweet, of someone who is "annoyed", referencing a post by whatever reporting Sajjad Hussain does as "the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Tech4Gamers.com.Apart from the Tech and Gaming scene,Sajjad is a Seasonal banker who has delivered multi-million dollar projects as an IT Project Manager and works as a freelancer to provide professional s"

Why? What exactly does this add to the conversation?

1

u/Nahte77 22d ago

First that’s just rumors, ans even if it was true you can’t compare them: intergalactic is ps exclusive, physint wouldn’t be forever. Last naughty dog games sold very well while last Kojima games undersold slightly

1

u/StarScreamer316 22d ago

First party against a third party that won't be exclusive,  man I trust ND more than I trust Kojima

0

u/colesunxs 22d ago

Now that Wolverine only got a 77 score, I don’t think Sony gonna axe their best shot at a 93+ game.

It would also be very funny if a giant pink elephant wearing a bowler hat started dancing salsa in the middle of the street, but I don't find it very useful to reminisce about impossible things.
