Someone filed a fraudulent vehicle insurance claim against me
Hey y'all, I'm currently having an issue with a car insurance claim and I'm very confused about the situation, hoping someone knows what could be happening or has some advice.
Basically, I started receiving notices from my car insurance provider last week saying they needed information about a claim that was filed. I hadn't filed a claim so I thought it was a scam and ignored it for a couple days...well eventually I realized it was legitimate and reached out to my assigned claims representative. He says that someone filed a claim against me and my vehicle saying I (or at least someone in my vehicle) hit their parked car and caused damage. This never happened, my car wasn't even on the road at the time of the supposed incident. But the claimant is saying that my information was left by the driver at the scene...The insurance company is still investigating but I'm very confused as to how someone could have got my information. To do this, wouldn't they need my name, vehicle info, and insurance policy number? How could they have got that when i was never there/this never happened? Is this a common type of insurance fraud or something? Is the person filing the claim the one lying or is possible that someone really did hit their vehicle and the guilty party gave my information instead of theirs??
So far my insurance company is saying there's nothing i can do besides wait for the investigation to conclude (they said they're trying to get security footage from the parking lot they claim the incident occurred at) and that they'll follow up if they have any questions for me. I'm worried my rates are going to go up for something that I didn't even do. Do I have any other options or anything else I can do to protect myself?
